Wow, what a fantastic site! It's right on the banks of the Lac de Serre-Poncon. It did take a long time to get there as you have to go through the mountains, whichever way you go. The Lac is the biggest man-made lake in France/Europe (depending on what you read!) The colour of the lake was unbelievable - it glowed turquoise in the sun.
We hadn't booked, but knew we wanted to go to this area of France, particularly near a lake.
We turned up and reception were very friendly, told us which pitches were free and let us go (on foot) and choose whichever we preferred. We only paid when we left. In fact, that's been the same in the majority of French sites we've stayed at. They also had lots of brochures about the local and not so local area.
We went to Turin for the day. It's a bit of a trek, but very worth it. You do have to drive up and down the mountains, but the beauty of Turin was worth the drive.
This is a municipal site and so it cost less than £30 a night for us - 3x adults and 3 children + EHU + lakeside pitch - fantastic value for money.
We stayed about two pitches in from the beach lake. The pitches were all different shapes and sizes. Having chosen our pitch we did have a bit of trouble fitting on it as it was so steep, but that was our fault and it was worth it for the view and convenience of being right by the lake. The lake was lovely to swim in, row a boat on. I think you could have fished if you'd bought a permit, but we don't fish. The view over the lake was fantastic, with mountains all around. In fact we saw a thunderstorm going on over the other side of the lake that didn't reach us. We also saw lots of hang-gliders, base jumpers and microlights. We also saw many cyclists going up and down the mountain roads. Whichever way you went from the campsite, you had to go up the mountains. You are allowed BBQs.
The site is very steep. There were three/four facilities and were mixed. The ones nearest to us were very old and only had 'French' toilets and could have done with updating, but the others (that we used) were much more modern and had modern toilets and showers. They were cleaned two or three times a day and seemed to stay clean. There was a washing machine and dryer, but we didn't need the dryer as the weather was so fine. There were plently of hook-ups, but I don't know what a British H&S officer would make of the trailing wires, electricity points on the same stand as dripping taps, etc! There was a very small play area and a table tennis table. We also noticed that people left their camping fridges and mobile telephones and other electrical equipment plugged in in the sockets in the wash areas (I presume so that didn't have to pay hook-up fees).
The site is about two miles from the nearest little town and about 5 miles from the nearest big supermarket, and there was a Decathlon and other superstores there, too. There was a very small shop and kiosk on the site, but they were obviously winding down at the end of the season.
We really loved this site and would recommend it to anyone. The only reason we are not going back this year is that we don't return to any sites, we're still discovering France.
My daughter told me to put 10/10 for everything!
