We stopped off here for a lunch break by the lake, and noticed the new name for the campsite.
It appears to have had a lot of work done, there is a swimming pool and a new sanitary block. The entrance area and building have been spruced up, it all looks very smart now.
We didn't get to stay this time as we had a time constraint and had to leave, but we enjoyed the peace of the lake.
I have rated it so that the rating remains the same.
Was the end of the day and Tomtom took us to this site. On approach looks lovely. Next to a lake and in woods. Was unable to look around site before booking. No warden in office so had to find. Pitches all looked nice but grass on long side. All had shrub borders and fairly private. Toilet/shower block a let down. Not that clean and too few. Toilets and showers not separate. A quite site. Left feeling they could be better.
This was our first visit here with our campervan, I reviewed the site last year when we came with our tent. Very little has changed, and when we were there it was extremely quiet.
When we arrived mid afternoon, there was a sign on the office door to pay downstairs in the restaurant before 2.30, otherwise choose a pitch, and the warden would be back later. He came back in a car early evening.
There was also a sign on the door 'no twin axle caravans', possibly the site is rather hilly for them.
The facility block was a bit cleaner than last year, and was nice and warm.
Reviewers - mature couple with car, tent and bikes.
We have used this campsite several times over the years. It is a useful stopover off the A20, and is situated on the outskirts of the town, up a hill. The site is on a wooded hill, the road spirals upwards with level grassy pitches off. At the top there are groups of pitches divided by hedges and trees. A few pitches at the bottom overlook the lake. There is a section of chalets. The site is next to a lake, which is used for leisure, fishing, and has a sandy 'beach' area and a path all round. Beneath the reception is a bar/restaurant, which we have never used, but seems to be popular.
The site is about 10 mins by bike from town going down, and 20 mins coming back, need to push a bit! It is worth a visit, and has restaurants, shops and several supermarkets.
If you leave the campsite and continue up the hill, there is a mediaeval keep which has been restored. The grounds are used for plays and other activities, and there is a mediaeval garden and some goats in the field at the back. There is no charge to visit the grounds, I don't think you can enter the keep.
There are 2 toilet blocks on the campsite. The one at the top of the hill is a portacabin type, with shared facilities, usually ok, but this time it had a sign up 'closed for the winter'. The block at the bottom of the site, adjacent to the reception, is also shared, and has 1 disabled toilet plus 1 WC and 1 squat, and 1 disabled shower plus 1 other, and 1 enclosed washbasin. The other washbasin cubicle was full of cleaning equipment. There are washing up sinks and laundry sinks in this room. The whole place needed a good scrub, the squat toilet smelt disgusting and the bins hadn't been emptied in the 2 weeks between our visits. There is a laundry downstairs and a 'games room', which looks like a garage needing a good sweep out.
The site looked very neglected, it used to have pots of flowers at the entrance, but these were all dead this year. The nice lady who used to be in reception has gone, and you have to seek out someone at the bar to pay. There is a barrier but I have never seen it in use, and you do feel slightly vulnerable as the lake is busy with visitors and they can easily access the campsite.
The price was moderately cheap, and apart from the slightly unsavoury facilities, this is a lovely peaceful site well worth a stopover.
