Our favourite before moving to the Dordogne 6 years ago.

A nice campsite in a very pleasant setting. Unfortunately, we had a very poor experience (probably the only one in 25 years) eating at the restaurant in the centre of the village. We probably won't return, as it's put us off the whole place. We were served first course, then ignored (despite asking) for the next two hours, then offered a first course again. When we protested, we were offered the bill. Finally we got served by the very grumpy waitress, who was clearly ignoring us because we were not French. We have never, ever, had this before anywhere in France.

Given the O/P is wanting to be near a town then I think the proximity of Soliel Plage to Sarlat is the best bet - especially as by a pretty quiet road - which is plenty wide enough to have two vehicles passing comfortably - was resurfaced earlier this year - and leads directly to a big LeClercs supermarket on the edge of town.

Although much prefer La Bouysse next door - far better VFM in our opinion esp as given you can always use the bar, restaurant and shop at SP when those at La Bouysse close at the end of August,

You still can't beat Beauliieu for proximity to either town or river.

Just don't say you are a friend of JoannaLesley if eating in the town square

Beaulieu is on the river Dordogne but is in the Correze department and is a fair treck to the main attractions normally assocaited with the Dordogne (as in the Deparment), eg Sarlat, Domme, Roque Gageac, Castlenaud, Beynac, the Vezere and the prehistoric sites like Lascaux.

Granted these can be throng in summer but with the rentree a week away things are starting to quiten down.

No - I don't get paid by the Dordogne Tourist Board

An oddity Stuart - I note from your link to the site on UKC the address is given as Midi-Pyrenees. Prior to the reshuffle of regions in 2016 the Correze, and therefore Beaulieu, was in the old Limousin region.

Soon be "Foire au Vin" season - Lidl's starts 4 Sept.
