The caravan and campsite opened in 2012 and is located in the heart of the RSPB Balranald Nature Reserve on North Uist and only metres from a beautiful sandy beach. It is an ideal base for exploring the Uists and Barra. We have 10 caravan/motorhome hard standing pitches with electric hook-ups and 10 tent pitches. Our newly built modern amenities block provides electric showers (operated by £1 coin meter), toilets, wash hand basins, disabled facilities, dish washing area, washing machine (operated by coin meter - £4 per large wash) and tumble dryer (15 minutes for £1). The Dunes Catering Cabin is based on the site between May and September and serves home made soups, freshly filled sandwiches and rolls, locally caught prawns and crab meat, homebaking, teas, filter coffee, cold drinks and snacks. Here you can order fresh locally caught lobster to cook yourself or we can cook it for you. Opening Hours are Mon-Fri 11am - 3pm; Sat & Sun 11am - 4pm.
The site is located in the RSPBs Balranald Nature Reserve where you will find a huge variety of wading and farmland birds nesting on the flower-rich machair and croft land. The site provides an ideal location to see and hear the elusive Corncrake. Other birds include Snipe, Oystercatcher, Lapwing, Turnstone, Ringed Plover, Redshank, Skylark, Arctic Tern, Little Tern and the Corn Bunting. Otters are also often seen in the freshwater lochs and along the rocky shores while grey seals can be seen just off the coast. There are fantastic views of the Monach Isles and St Kilda. The RSPB Balranald Visitor Centre is a short walk from the site and there are guided walks during the summer months.
We are located on the picturesque west coast of North Uist 16 miles from the ferry terminal at Lochmaddy, 17 miles from ferry terminal at Berneray and 17 miles from Benbecula Airport.
We are three miles (4.8 km) north of Bayhead. Turn for Hougharry (Hogha Gearraidh) off the A865. The site is sign posted off the A865 - look out for the beach image on our sign.
There are bus services on Mondays to Saturdays linking to/from Berneray for ferry connections to Harris, and with Lochmaddy and Benbecula. Service W18 serves the west side of North Uist and stops at the Balranald RSPB Nature Reserve.
