 Me and my partner, along with our 10 year old daughter and dog, have just returned from a week at Thorntons. An over all we had a marvellous time and met some lovely people!
The site is well looked after. The showers provided hot water and was more than an ample for our needs. After all you are meant to be camping. The shop had all the bits n bobs you could think of. We had such a great time, we will be def going again. This time for 10 days!.

A group of us (8 tents and 1 caravan) visited for 3 nights and we all had an excellent time.
The facilities, although they are not new are adequate and there are plenty of showers and toilets. The swimming pool was a big hit with the children and there is plenty of space for them to play. Take their bikes if you can because there is the space.
This is an excellent site if you want to visit Nottingham. In the nearby village there is a co-op so you do not have to go far for groceries. The small shop on site also sells a few bits, sweets and ice creams.

We visited this site with our 2 children aged 10 and 3.
The pitches were very spacious and flat and clearly numbered. Lots of free space for the children to play. There is also a children's playground and free games room (snooker and table tennis). The swimming pool could get a bit pricey at £2 per person, but it was a good pool. Warm and clean.
The toilets were slightly dated but plenty of them. The showers cost 20p for 3 minutes (1st time we have had to pay for showers) but certainly well worth it. Would not complain about this at all.
Free range chickens also kept the kids amused. If you have a phobia of chickens this may not be the best site for you. They visited us in our awning, the laundry room and even the toilets!
It rained every day of our holiday and we feel the only thing this site is missing is some sort of communal area with perhaps a TV and chairs for people to meet up.
Hidden away in a peaceful location but only 5 minutes walk to the pub or 5 minutes in car to Morrisons. Overall an excellent site. This is also confirmed by the number of very friendly regulars who pitch their caravans here for the whole summer.

What a great site. We arrived after a lot of rain and managed to get pitched before the heavens opened again. The pitch was large and flat with was great so no puddles under us.
Our 2 dogs loved the walks. There is a great walk along the disused railway track that takes you to the country park. The shop on site sells the basics and they are very helpful telling you of places of interest to visit. The shower and wash up are situated in the old pig barns, so not state of the art but quite function able.
The free roaming hens, cockerels and cats are un fazed by visitors.
The pool is adequate and not too deep.
There is a pub 5 mins walk away that does the most amazing carvery for £3.50 and it's a real belly buster.
Very reasonable site and we all had a great time, will be back again soon.

Great site which is well maintained and the pitches are set out well (for electric). Large area for playing games with the kids and about four different sections to stay in. Shop was poor but had the basics. Pool can be hired out but if you want it then hire it when you get there.
Some nice pubs and walks in the area. We liked Gunthorpe Lock a few miles away which had a nice walk along the trent and a great pub.
We paid £22 per night with electric for a family of 5.

Just come back from a 3 night stay at this site. The staff are really friendly and very helpful. Gave us good instructions and directions on arrival to our pitch. The toilets and washing up area's were always clean.
The playground is dated but that didn't seem to bother the amount of children playing on it, the swimming pool is lovely and booking to use it means its never crowded.
We found the site to be very clean and the pitches well laid out. We had lots of rain whilst we were there but the ground seemed to hold up well. Due to them keeping the grass short .Overall really enjoyed it there.Very relaxing. Can't wait to go back.
Oh and just round the corner there is the shepherds pub which does a very nice carvery mon-sat for £3.50.Excellent value.

We (2 adults and 2 children aged 6 & 4) visited this site for a weekend in July on our way to Cornwall. Stayed 3 nights Fri-Mon. Friday and Saturday night the campsite was very busy and we had fairly noisy neighbours at night. Sunday night we were the only tent left in our field and the kids loved having a huge amount of space to play in. Pitch size was great, we had ample room for our large tent. The pitch itself was well drained and made it easy to peg the tent down and was very level. Plenty room for the car. All in all a well laid out site.
Hens, ducks and cats wandering the site, the children loved it but if you took your own dog then I would beware of it chasing the hens etc. Other people were warned about this.
Plenty of room on-site for games/frisbee etc. Children loved the play area too.
Got the bus to Nottingham which was ideal. Ate one night at the nearby pub - walking distance. Bought the most enormous portion (at reasonable price) of fish and chips at nearby chipshop in Cotgrave (you would need a car to get there tho).
There is an OK shop on site - at least ok for basics and sweets. There is a small Sainsburys and a co-op in Cotgrove if you need more. A huge freezer on site is provided to refreeze your icepacks - for free. Staff in the shop & reception were very friendly and helpful.
We would definitely go back if we are in the area again.
Only comments would be to take a torch - you may need it at night as some areas are not well lit. Although we found the toilet and shower facilities clean and tidy at all times they are not the most modern but are perfectly adequate for the site.

Just got back from here 5 night stay, basic camp, staff friendly and helpful toilets showers and washing up facilities basic but clean just a shame that other campers don't clean up after themselves. Chickens running around got there eggs from the shop really good. Best to catch bus into Nottingham only £3.40 return for adults and £1.60 for a child.The best indian take away I have ever had was from the local village of Cotgrave well worth a visit. Would return to this site if I was travelling this way again

Great site, stayed for a weekend 17th - 19th July. Stayed on site for the whole time so no reviews on the outside world. Used the pool which we hired as a group for the Sat evening at a cost of £25 for an hour, but I think you can go along to the open sessions for £1 - £2. Kids made good use of the park which is well maintained, shop (mainly for sweets but you could survive for a week on what they had in), and the open areas on the camping field sufficient for a game of football, a small kickabout and a cricket match (junior sized) at the same time. We had a hook up but there are pitches without as well for the professionals!
Freezer for ice block swapping, 20p showers - clean and tidy, free washing up water. Very wet Fri but drainage seemed to do it's job well. Water taps at regular intervals. We are local Nottingham folk so ideal for a quick break.

Only stayed the one night due to only having 2 days off!
From what we saw it was a lovely, friendly and welcoming site.
The shower, toilet and wash blocks are in need of updating. It costs 20p for 3 mins in the shower which in my opinion is terrible as we have been on cheaper sites with modern facilities which you did not need to pay for!
The pitch we stayed on was level but in the open so no privacy, but you can get a pitch near hedge line to give you that.
Site is located in a good area! Walking distance to a pub but are far better options a drive away!

This is a well laid out and well administered site in a beautiful location handy for many interesting and quaint towns and villages, lke Melton Mowbry, Newark and many others. There seems to be plenty to keep children happy with a playground, horses and other animals Oh and a small swimming pool.
On booking I asked about facilities for disabled and was assured that there was disabled facilities. However it would appear that was where the disabled concern stayed as we were allocated a plot some distance from the toilet block and a heck of a long way to carry the elsan cassette to empty. The disabled bathroom (£5 deposit for key) was poorly maintained and looked grubby. There are 2 toilets one raised and 1 standard a shower 20p and a white plastic chair. The main toilets were similar with a urinal that didn't have any autoflushing and there was a stone in the trough when we arrived and it was still there when we left.

This was the first camping trip I had been on in many years, and the first for my two kids, 4 and 10.
We stayed for four days, and found the site absolutely wonderful. We used the swimming pool every morning for an hour, which is organised on reservation basis to prevent it getting too full. And the local Sainsbury has everything that you could need for a normal duration of stay.
There is a little swing park on site, however, it is rusty and a bit run down, so definitely requires adult supervision whilst the kids play there. However, this shouldn't stop anyone from coming to this site, as there also is a large field in the middle of the site where the kids can run around, play tig, football or with frisbee

A fantastic site for families.
Plenty of space, flat pitches, electric hook up and usual waste disposal. Lots of room for the kids to play games , ride bikes etc.
Toilets and showers are converted pig stys but they are cleaned on a regular basis and the only reason you would know the origin is that the cubicles are all different sizes and shapes. The showers take 20p which gives approx 3 minutes of decent flow hot water. If we are not expected hotel standards then there is nothing wrong with them.
There is a kids play area - some of the items being slightly dated but there seemed to be no shortage of youngsters on there which answers any questions really.
There is a shop on site which sells the basics including gas but there is also a Sainsburys Local in the next village and a Morrisons supermarket 3 miles away.
There is a small swimming pool which holds around 15 people which has to be pre booked. Our visit was over a bank holiday and there was no problems booking the pool.
The staff are really friendly and helpful.
I have already booked to go here again and would recommend anyone else to do the same

We really enjoyed this site. The information booklet given to us on arrival was very comprehensive and useful. The location was great - we loved walking along the disused railway track which eventually lead us into a country park.
Local supermarket nearby which was useful. We didn't use the swimming pool due to the charge and the small size but we found a public pool quite nearby which was great (sorry can't remember its name!) where they allowed diving so our 2 daughters taught themselves to dive which they've never had the opportunity to do before. The £3.50 carvery was amazing value and definitely worth looking into.
The loo/shower facilities weren't the best but were perfectly adequate and we have no complaints about them. Will definitely use this site again.

Just had great 3 day stay over the bank holiday. Site really clean, staff very friendly and helpful. You are given a handbook on arrival. Brill, it tells you places to visit, local shops, hospitals etc
Showers and toilets looked ok but didn't use them, used my own. Only downside was rubbish bins are near office and the elsan, shower block etc, which is a good walk when carrying bags of rubbish etc.
Apart from that cracking site. Ps pub / restaurant 150 yards from entrance with cheap meals.
