Absolutely fantastic site. We went there last minute and we picked well. Although very busy plenty of staff on.
Lots of horses roaming about which was lovely. It's very picturesque and full of history, we enjoyed reading about the history and had a walk around to see what it was all about.
It was so nice to go somewhere with history. You could imagine from the layout how it was all those years ago. Just fantastic
Having been to the majority of the forestry commission sites in my 35 years of camping, I found that I had never been to this site, so I booked it for myself and 4 friends to go for the May bank holiday.
Location: Ocknell was quite easy to find via a Satnav and is set as others have stated in the grounds of a WW2 airfield. There was a certain amount of background noise from the main road, but you get used to it very quickly. There is plenty of tree cover on the site that allows you to find some level of privacy. However it is relatively small so this can be impossible during peak times.
Facilities: Facilities are poor to average on the whole. Whilst the toilet and wash block is kept clean by the wardens, it is in drastic need of updating and repainting. When you compare to other Forestry Commission sites such as Holmsley and Hollands Wood they are very old and dingy. There is no camp shop on site or playground facilities for children.
There are no electric hook ups.
Be aware, that you will not be able to park or drive on the grass at any point and will have to walk with all your camping gear from the 'runways' to your chosen area.
Customer Service: As a whole the wardens are polite however, as a group of 5 men (Average age of 48)we were treated with suspicion and with a lack of respect. After being given a condescendingly long explanation of the rules after having handed over £125 cash as a 'behaviour bond'. I have been camping since a child, am a member of the Camping & Caravanning Club, had been to forestry commission sites more times than I can recount and whilst I was aware that this was usual practice, it was done so that it left a bad taste in your mouth.
The campsite crew obviously care about the environment a great deal and were very enthusiastic about looking after the place as it was spic and span. However, they went overboard with this and put a big dampener on our weekend, treating us with continual suspicion with regular walkarounds and 'chats'and reminders of the rules, despite being quiet and thoughtful and respectful of our environment and of other campers.
The no vehicles on grass rule is very strictly monitored and enforced. This is the only campsite that I have come across which has this rule or is enforced to this degree.
We had regular noise checks, even when we were 'asleep' - maybe we snored a bit too loudly? During this weekend there was also a large family group, who were noisy right into the early hours and were not visited once.
My advice, don't come here as a single sex group, even if you adhere to the rules, you will still be made to feel unwelcome. They may have received some bad previous experiences from groups in the past but they have now gone to the other extreme.
We were accused of letting off a chinese lantern, and were threatened with eviction. It then transpired that it was a family with teenage children who did this. We never got an apology.
At the end of the weekend feeling somewhat disgruntled, we had to then wait over an hour before we could leave whilst the pitch was checked before we received our bond back reluctantly.
We will not be coming back here again. It was insulting!
Stayed here for one night over Easter after spending a couple of nights down at Ashurst.
Great location, nice flat pitches, lots of room so you don't feel crowded in, open heathland pitches and pitches within the woodland as well. Ocknell is built on the Northern site of the old Stoneyt Cross Airfield so there are good roadways and pitches available on hard standing as well. The Site Manager and his team are very friendly and helpful.
There is no EHU and there is no children's play area.
Only down point is the toilet block. Whilst we don't mind the lack of showers for a night or two, would be nice if there was some wash cubicles available, like at Ashurst, so that you can have a strip wash in a little privacy. The toilet block was clean and well stocked however needs a little bit of modernising.
Set on an old WW2 air field most of it is flat You will need heavy duty pegs to pitch tents and awnings. No electric hook ups on site However there is no major tree cover if like me you are solar powered New Staff this year are very helpful don't forget to ask for your 30% discount if one of your party is over 55 (20% high season) Good walking in the area the only disadvantage is the humm of the A31 Trunk road about quarter mile away Sandy soil in the area meand good site drainage and very little mud if its wet
Hadn't been for a while and can now remember why! Apart from the constant background now of the A31 a huge RV type motorhome insisted upon running his generator between 10am and 5pm each day which just made matters worse.
The site was pretty much full and pitch choices were limited. The ground is abysmal - they should advise you that rock pegs are mandatory. We tried 3 pitches without any luck, 16 out of 20 tent pegs ruined.
The facilities are now getting dated and the whole site could do with a general once over. Won't be going back.
We have just returned from a long weekend at Ocknell, and had a wonderful time. Although the site was full, we had a lovely spot in the Glades, and couldn't fault the staff. The manager is new at the site, and he was very friendly and helpful.
The toilets were clean (although the loo roll ran out occasionally), the washing up facilities were fine, and we even managed to get milk from the site reception fairly late on a Sunday evening.
Many people have complained about the road noise at this site, but I must say that it didn't intrude at all - if you really tried, you could hear a low hum in the background, but nothing dramatic.
All in all, if you want a basic site, with plenty of woodland for the kids to play in, you can't go wrong here. My advice to those with a tent would be to look for a spot in the Glades - there were some lovely little nooks and crannies, with gorgeous views.
For motorhomes and caravans, there was plenty of hard standing to be had, but it wasn't quite so pretty.
Oh and as a final word, watch out for the ponies - we opened up the zip one morning to find one staring back at us
We have been going to Ocknell for some 21 years, the last 5 of them being seasonals. It is, without doubt, a beautiful forest site, but the beauty can only take you so far in having a good time.
Over the last 3 years the site has not been managed very well. The current warden does not adhere to the site rules:- ie pitching too close, noise, and the general tidiness is very lacking, and if the warden doesn't seem to care you always find that the clientèle doesn't care either.
It is a shame in this day and age with the prices you pay (especially a seasonal pitch)that you actually don't even get asked if you are enjoying your stay.
Ocknell needs a team that are on 'Hands 0n', always down with the campers, making sure that spacing is correct, permits on every vehicle and movement of seasonals taking place. ALL the above are not being done by this team and its a shame.
The A31 noise that some people keep mentioning is the smallest of grievances that we have about this site.
However, on a lighter note the two assistants this, Mike and Jerry seem to be made of the right stuff for a campsite and are both polite and friendly. It seems senior management got the positions the wrong way round.
What a beautiful place! My almost 5 year old loved the animals and 'The Glades', the area we camped in, the trees, making dens, etc.Was perfect
My only criticism is the toilet block is basic/outdated and I found it almost impossible to wash and dress my daughter due to lack of space, people coming in and out all the time, wherever we stood we were in someone's way and it was just as difficult to wash myself as there is no where to put anything.
Otherwise fantastic family friendly site - we were surrounded by other families and even the younger childless couples/groups were respectful of the quiet needed once the sun set to get the kids to sleep. Great friendly atmosphere
Rock Pegs essential - thanks to the reviews that mentioned this! Will definitely re-visit, think 2/3 nights enough if camping due to poor washing facilities
