We were meant to be staying at Roundhill but had to go to Ocknell as Roundill had a major problem with their loos (which they sorted quickly). We had only been to Hollands Wood before and weren't too sure what to expect. We had a lovely pitch and as we walked round with our dogs and discovered that there were many lovely pitches to choose from. There is so much space, you can walk for miles and it was lovely to see families out with kites, balls and playing games. There were loads of cyclists, there is a 40 mph speed limit through the forest so it's fairly safe and the ponies / deer / cows wander freely and we were there for the foals. Only downside was the noise of the A31 which you could hear in most places so not really an "away from the noise" site. Toilet block cleaned and they had both sides open when we were there - there was no soap though or hand drying facilities so you need to take the kitchen sink. Great for a weekend and we will certainly be using other sites in the forest again and again - thanks
Camping is surely all about getting back to basics and back to nature, and this campsite provides these opportunities in abundance.
Yes the toilets can be a long way from your tent, yes there are no showers and yes there is no electric hook up. If you want these comforts go somewhere else, stay at home or spend a ghastly week on some tacky Mediterranean island.
If you want to be surrounded by wildlife, camped in your own secluded forest clearing, can remember to bring everything with you and don't mind a couple of miles walk to the nearest, but great pubs, then go to this campsite.
Take footballs, frisbees, la baulle, cricket bat and kite as there is so much beautiful open space around this site that you'll simply won't want to stray too far. If you want to get out, Salisbury, Southampton and Bournemouth are all close and offer, history, shopping and the beach respectively.
I only live about 15 miles away from this site but have and will visit it 5-6 times a summer, either on my own or with friends as it really is a great site.
I stayed on this site (Ocknell) for 4 nights (17th - 21st Aug) with my 5 1/2 year old. It was lovely being able to choose our own pitch and great that there was a good minimum space allowed between pitches. We found a lovely spot in "The Glades" area with our pitch bordered on 3 sites by ferns, giving us privacy from the neighbouring tents, although they were close enough for us not to be "spooked" by being in the forest alone! The only problem with the pitch was that the ground was very stony and hammering the pegs in was almost impossible, so we had to go without a few and the ones I did get in were very loose...good job it wasn't windy!
This area of the site was lovely and peaceful and our neighbours were friendly and considerate. No mess or litter anywhere. A group of adult campers opposite us had a night time BBQ and drinks, but they weren't at all rowdy, kept their voices low and were very considerate. This is how I found the general atmosphere of the site - just as I had hoped camping in the New Forest would be.
I only booked this site because no New Forest sites with showers had availability and at least this one had toilets. The one toilet block was clean, though quite a long walk from our pitch, so we were really lazy and drove there when we needed to, usually on our way in or out of the site! My main initial concerns were the lack of showers (but we knew this before we booked) and the distance to the toilet block, but as we only stayed 4 nights, we did survive, especially with ferns being around 3 sides of the tent :o) Having taken 3 washing up bowls, we managed to stay reasonably fresh and clean! Going "back to basics" was also quite an education for my little one and she thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
There are no shops or petrol stations for a few miles, so if you're thinking of going, stock up when you can! My only whinge was that the toilet blocks had no soap or hand drying facilities, which was daft because every time we stopped for the loo, we had to remember to take soap and towels just to wash our hands afterwards!
Had a fantastic break here and of course the Forest is beautiful. Ponies did occassionally wander around by our tent and a little deer popped its head round one morning, to the delight of my daughter! The site was as advertised - no more no less and no false pretences. We got what we expected and would love do it again. Great place.
Just returned from a relaxing weekend at Ocknell. It was the only site we could get into in the New Forest at short notice, and is a good sized site although some of the pitches were a long walk from the (single) toilet block.
It's a nice mix of heath- and woodland so if it's not busy you can choose the type of pitch to suit you, and there are nice walks from the site. Although it's surrounded by countryside, you can hear the nearby A31 at night quite clearly.
The ponies wander freely, much to my children's delight, so you need to be careful to put food away. And of course there's no accounting for the behaviour of some people...
The lack of showers means I wouldn't stay more than a couple of days, and the toilets were badly in need of cleaning by mid-morning when they were done. But I'd recommend it as a peaceful spot for a relaxing weekend in the woods, especially not in the middle of August!
Very peaceful site, pleasant surroundings, quiet and plenty of ponies, deer and other wildlife around. This is the sort of site where you make your own entertainment so it might not appeal to some, but for us it was a very welcome departure from the commercial sites.
Unfortunately the wildlife extended to the human variety, with what sounded like a rave and drag race on the main road just outside the campsite which went on for a couple of hours until around 12PM on Saturday night. Worth hearing others' comments as to whether this is a regular thing or just a one off.
Excellent walks/bike rides and plenty of fun to be had cycling along the forest tracks, particularly the less used ones (bit of a laugh getting stuck in the mud). We happended upon a nice pub about a 30 minute walk away (Royal Oak at Fritham) with an impressive array of ales.
Obviously no showers on site but we have a Pennine folding camper and although the washroom/toilet is a bit cramped, it is possible to get by for a few nights. Sandy Balls campsite is around 7 miles away near Fordingbridge, and they allow visitors to use their pool for a reasonable price (and if you use the pool, you can use the showers too......).
