A lovely outlook to this campsite situated next to a lake which was used by water-skiers and even a banana boat which my husband went on!

On to the site. We stayed in the electric hook up area which is situated within a short distance to the toilet block, the non electric pitches were quite a distance from these blocks, so bear this in mind when booking.

The actual toilet blocks were quite basic and could do with a bit of doing up. One toilet (there are 3 in the ladies) had no seat and one of them did not flush as handles was broken. The showers were OK, again basic but hot (be careful as sometimes would be far too hot) did not like the fact there was no hand dying facilities although they do provide a towel, however this was very dirty and I certainly would not want to use that! one good thing was there was plenty of toilet rolls.

My husband said the men's toilet/shower area was in bad condition and dirty and could do with pulling down! (the boat sheds were in fantastic condition, maybe they could do the same with the toilet block)!

They provide an undercover washing up area, but to be honest we used this once as it took an age to get some hot water out of it as it dribbled out! the water pressure does seem to be a problem here.

The is a play area with swings and a slide which was fine for our kids.

Maybe a noticed to keep dogs on leads and to clear up after them is needed.

I would probably not be going back only if they sorted out the above issues.

To be quite honest I loved this campsite. Everyone was really friendly, the indian restaurant and catering van we're both very good and tasty.

I am a first time camper and a group of us went for two nights. I do think the site is slightly expensive but the beautiful picturesque landscape is well worth it.

None of us had a use of a car but there we're public transport routes to freeport where we enjoyed the day out.

The toilet and shower facilities we're clean but basic and a good 5 minute walk from our tent pitch which was a slight hinderance.

The washing up sink tap was useless. But that is the only real complaint I have about this site.

I would highly recommend it although I do think it is more suited to the older generations as I think families would get bored as there is no entertainment on site.

We have just returned from this campsite today, having visted with our family of 5 (2 adults & 3 young children) & 3 other families - there were 22 of us in all, plus 1 dog.

We were all able to be together, which was nice & the pitches were spacious. We had room for a gazebo on our pitch, too. Gazebos are supposed to be £5 per night but we managed to get away with not paying the extra.

We camped next to the church & cemetery. Be aware the bell ringers practising for some time on a Saturday (over an hour) & ringing at 0755 hrs on a Sunday for the first service of the day! We had an evening stroll through the cemetery & onto a field to Gosfield Hall to do some bat & owl spotting, which was fun.

The children took their bikes & scooters & made good use of them.

There was a nice relaxed atmosphere to the site & the surroundings really are beautiful. Some of the children went on a banana boat on the lake, which was £5 each for 10 mins. It was fun watching the waterskiers, too - we enjoyed just sitting watching these & just soaking up the beauty of the lake, trees etc.

The things that really let the site down are the toilet blocks & the washing up facilities. The toilet blocks are terribly dated. One of the toilets in the ladies loo had a seat missing & another toilet had a broken flush handle. The toilets also took forever to fill up again, so if you went in immediately after someone else, you had no hope of flushing it within 5 mins!

Everyone had to share 1 hand towel after they washed their hands. This was really dirty on one occasion & I was loathe to use it. The floor was dirty & flooded on one day from the 2 showers which were in the same area as the toilets.

There were 2 showers outside, too, which I did not dare use as they looked awful, but my husband used one of the mens ones as the inside ones were busy, but he said it was disgusting. The ceilings in both toilet blocks were filthy.

The washing up area wasn't fantastic either. There were 2 really deep sinks & I have to say it is uncomfortable washing up as an adult - our children found it fine - age 5 & 7! The hot tap in the left sink didn't work at all & the hot tap in the right sink dribbled out & it took some time for our bowl to fill!

The children enjoyed the play area, but some investment could be made here & it only consisted of 2 swings, 1 baby swing & a slide.

There is a play park about 5/10 mins walk away, which we visited, too.

We feel that the toilet blocks really let the site down & it is for this reason, & this reason only, that we wouldn't return to the site. Considering we paid £84. 00 for a 3 night stay, money should be invested in this area.

Just returned from this site which has pros and cons.

Lets start with the cons.

Its quite expensive and as mentioned before, dogs are £5 a night and ours didn't use the facilities, although our child did, and she was cheaper!

The facilities were a good 5 minutes away from some pitches including ours. So plenty of notice needed for the loo and plenty of muscle needed for the long walk with the water.

Upon arrival you are asked to read through the rules of the site which quite clearly state a no noise rule after 10pm, our neighbours clearly misread that as 4am. We felt that it might be an idea for the owners/management to have a tour round to see how the camp is behaving.

Now for the pros.

The site is easy to find. We like the 'pitch anywhere' idea. Found it to be clean even though there were only bins at the entrance.

The views are beautiful, overlooking the lake, watching water skiers. Very relaxed atmosphere during the day.

The two of us stayed here for one night with our dog. Beautiful site but agree with other reviewers that toilets are a long way away. Quiet site, plenty of space. Would stay again apart from one thing. Dogs are £5 per night! A child costs less and they use the facilities!

Don't really think the site is worth £24 per night given the long walk and basic toilets/showers.

There is a catering van on site that very kindly sold us some food for our bbq and even did something special with the salmon before giving it to us!

Nearby town of Halstead (2 miles) has cash machines but no corner store type shops open beyond 4pm on Sunday except from the Esso garage which had a very limited supply of food.

Other than on a Sunday the town is well served with supermarkets, shops, eating places.

First time campers so didn't really know what to expect!

We weren't travelling too far to stay here and found it very easily, it was signposted directly into Gosfield so we had no problems.

Quite honestly, the surroundings were beautiful.

It was really nice to just relax in the countryside over looking a lake, they don't reserve pitches nor are they marked out its first come first served on best views and pitches but we were fortunate to be right by the lake which was lovely.

The kids thoroughly enjoyed themselves, we expected there to be more climbing frames etc for the kids, there was a slide and swings which concerned us at first as how to keep them occupied but they just loved running around the place and we literally had to drag them away from watching all the waterskiing going on the lake, one of the boys there was training for Junior Worlds so it was fantastic to watch, the ski club was busy and it created a lovely atmosphere, the kids loved it!

There was a large picnic area with benches and an incredibly polite man in the food cabin who does snacks and bits during the day and roast dinners on sundays! Can't say I expected to have a roast dinner whilst camping.

The toilets were a couple of minute walk from our tent which wasn't a problem, on one occasion there was no toilet roll but once I reported this to reception it had been replenished really quickly.

We experienced some noise problems from a group of adults near our tent, but in the welcome pack/letter we were provided with it instructions how to contact management with any problems. We rang the main office and they sorted it out immediately.

We had a fantastic weekend, really cannot say enough nice things about the place. Reading the reviews below I agree that facilities are basic, but they are working, our experience was that they were clean and if anything ran out the staff were more than happy to sort it out right away.

As I've said, we're not regular campers but my understanding of camping is that its a back to basics fun adventure and we certainly had that in the best possible way.

We've booked to go back for the bank holiday weekend and the kids cannot wait as we've also booked for a banana boat ride with some friends of ours.!

Would recommended the place to anyone, but you do need to book in advance.

I have just got back from a stay at this Campsite and loved it! The lake that the campsite is on is so nice and an amazing image especially during sunset. I also loved watching the skiing on the lake throughout the day.

It was a busy weekend and there were many people but it was nice as they were all friendly and we were not on top of each other so didn't effect us.

The facilities there are also of good standard with clean showers and toilets which were just I short walk away. They also had washing up facilities which helped us so much as we didn't have to wash everything outside under a tap on the floor.

Overall we really enjoyed our experience and will be going back very soon without a doubt!

We visited this site recently and were quite disappointed as it sounds so lovely from the website. The location was nice with an old church right next to the site and the lake was beautiful.

However the toilet block was very basic and not clean or well stocked with toilet rolls etc. The basin area also needed some attention to bring it up to todays standards. There were only two showers for women, in a separate area from the toilets and basins, which were again very very basic and not well cared for or clean.

Showering was unfortunately a rather unpleasant experience as the water was luke-warm and barely trickled out! I think that the mens showers were slightly better and located in a portacabin to the back of the toilets.

The site was poorly lit at night and the path to the toilet block treacherous with potholes. There was only one fresh water tap which was quite a walk from our pitch. There was also no wi-fi or internet facilities.

All seemed to be going ok, found a reasonable spot (although next to a load of stinging nettles) and pitched. Later on in the day a large group of people, adults and children, decided to pitch right in the middle of everything, were extremely noisy, took over the whole area (which is small anyway) which meant no one else could play games etc and then proceeded to have a noisy drunken bbq at 10pm followed by a lot more drinking and playing connect 4 until about 3am (connect 4 is very noisy when the counters drop out onto a table at 3am!). They were sitting about 3 feet away from our sleeping compartment and had no concern for anyone else at all. The site does not seem to have rules on 'quiet times' which is a shame.

The water/toilet/washing up and shower facilities were a very long walk away; there was very little to do on site and the whole place was geared up for water skiers and the triathlon swimmers. Toilet roll and hand towels ran out half way through the day.

The site is very pretty sited by the lake but that's about all I can recommend. It was ok for one night and I'm sure if it wasn't for the noisy people, it would have been a far better experience all round!

Torches are absolutely essential as is insect repellent - being by the water brings all the gnats and mozzies out!

This is a truly beautiful location - the tent pitches are literally at the lake edge (parents take note).

Very peaceful, although that probably changes to some extent when there is a large waterski event. We stayed for one night (2 adults + 2 small children) and had the place to ourselves due to the bad weather. Yes the toilet / showers are not right next to the tent field but we didn't find that a problem at all; the facilities were clean and in good order and the manager was very friendly and helpful.

This is an ideal 'chilled-out' short break location, close to London. There is also some good fishing here (carp anglers take note).

We'll be going back for sure!
