Excellent basic site. Stayed 4 nights. Very good pub to sit in during the evening with friendly locals, tasty food (especially Sunday lunch) and excellent beer (need to pre-order food in the evening during the week). Toilet facilities are the pub toilets left open each night which were clean, and lights on. Basin is small but quick hot water. Why do some people nick plugs? Shower is in a separate shabby-looking building. Half-hourly bus service to Burnham, Maldon, Chelmsford from a stop a third of a mile away beside the Althorne post office/shop (although bus travels within 200metres but no stop nearby). Field was clean. Did not use a hook-up. 2 of us with tent was £10 per night. Brilliant value! Would use it again.

Nice location. But I tend to disagree with the previous comments about a 'real' camping experience. Yes this site is basic but not my idea of real camping. Basically it is just a field behind a pub (albeit a good pub). The area is strewn with rubbish and the facilities filthy. There doesn't seem to be any 'rules' or anyone keeping an eye on things. This place would be ok for a stop over maybe but I wouldn't recommend it to families or to stay long. It is very cheap £13 per night. 'Real' camping would be a field perhaps -but not with rubbish everywhere. Great potential here but sadly not tapped in to. I wouldn't go back to camp - but maybe I would to the pub!

We have been visiting the Huntsman & Hounds site for 7 or 8 years now and can only recommend this site as a 'real' camping experience. It's a large field by a friendly local pub with basic washing facilities. Isn't that what camping is all about. !
We camp with 3 other couples with our various children of all ages most of which are now teenagers and they can wander freely throughout the surrounding fields. They can enjoy the freedom in a natural environment safe in the knowledge that us adults are nearby ready to feed them when necessary! There are good local facilities not more than a mile away for emergency supplies and those of a more energetic nature could walk for miles within the Essex countryside which in itself can be a surprise.
Yes, it is close to a nearby pub but there is never any noise from the patrons who arrive and leave all day. The warm reception we receive from the staff every year is always welcoming and friendly and they are more than happy to accommodate our large party when we order our food on a Saturday night - which by the way is good value and tasty.
We will be going back again for sure next year.

Wonderful, simple site. As previous reviews mention it's a field next to a pub with electric hook-up points dotted around the field.
The pub is excellent, with good grub and well kept beers and welcoming staff. I had a really good steak during our stay.
I would not hesitate to recommend this site but feel a couple of constructive comments appropriate.
The electric hook-up points. Some of these need some attention. Some have become hidden by overgrown vegetation and the covers have come loose. Also the socket I plugged into wasn't very secure.
Lights didn't work in the shower and had to shower with the doors open, but wasn't disturbed and modesty secure.
Chemical/sewage disposal point could be a bit more user friendly.
However these are minor, easily sorted-out details in what is over all a lovely place to stay.

This is going to sound bad after all those good reviews but here goes.
When we arrived at this site I actually thought it was a travellers site it was such a mess. Bins overflowing, empty caravans all over the place using up the very few electric points. Alot of transits and work vans. Showers were probably in the middle of a refit as full of dust and also no light.
Ok so we stayed the pub was lovely and the toilets were clean and worked and had 24hr access. The beer was wonderful and so were the locals.
This site is very basic but we will actually go back as the pub makes it. Its such a shame with a bit of money spent on new electrics and making the stored vans move off the main site. Perhaps trimming the hedges and mowing the field will make such a huge difference also a bit of hardcore needed on the entrance as in the wet it was very muddy.

Came here for the Whitsun bank holiday for 6 nights.
The pub is an old thatched roof character building with a beautiful lawned front beer garden surrounded by a varied array of plants and a pond (fenced) at the bottom. Very country garden ish, no-where better to be on a hot summers afternoon. The inside of the pub still retains much of it's original features; inglenook fireplace (with log burner), low beamed ceiling etc.
The owner and the Team at the pub are, as has been mentioned previously, very welcoming and the regulars are very friendly too. Not the usual looking at you like you have two heads crowd as found in many country pubs. Jim actually takes the time to talk, which again makes a nice change when compared to many other pubs we have visited.
The pub does lovely, not overly priced meals and has a selection of real ales on tap including (on our visit)one of my favourites 'Doombar' from Cornwall.
The camp site has all we need. A flat field with basic hot showers, toilets (pub) and chemical waste point. Electric hook up was a bonus for the cooler nights.
The EHU points are of the card meter type with the minimum value available to purchase being £5. Having said this we managed to find a vacant EHU point and pitch with credit still in the meter and we never had to top it up. The tariff on the meter is realistically set so folks do not get ripped off, which is a pleasant change.
In the whole of the 6 nights we were there including the bank holiday weekend, we did not hear any of the pub customers leaving, no rowdiness of any kind whatsoever.
For these reasons the Huntsman and Hounds gets a big thumbs up from us, and would highly recommend it, ok so there is no play area for the kids (a blooming big field to run around in though), or a multi shower/toilet complex with piped music but not everyone wants these facilities from a campsite. We don't ! :-)

We stayed here last night just for one night and made full use of the pub. The food was fantastic as well was the barmen.
The atmosphere was great. Really laid back and welcoming. The site itself is basic and as far as I am concerned a real camping experience. Value for money.
If you enjoy camping because you like sleeping in a field and looking at the stars then this place is perfect and we will definitely be going back for a full weekend.

What a great place, we were wmade extremely welcome, we phoned after leaving steeply bay in a hurry, asking if the ground was OK , and if they had places. The guy said he would check the ground which he did, and said it was OK. We arrived and as stated were made welcome straight away. We had dinner in the pub and a couple of bottles of good reasonably priced vino, and also the food was reasonably priced and great. The field behind the pub is large and as someone else has stated its a goldmine, but they need to utilise it. We will be returning there as often as we can

We pre booked 2 nights here but decided to arrive a day early. We were welcomed with open arms and the extra night wasn't a problem. £26 for 3 nights.
We had a fantastic stay and all the other guests were great. We also met some first time campers that were from essex so didn't travel to far for their first time and they loved it.
The field is huge and you can pitch anywhere you want. Landlord was so gracious and would do anything for you. Toilets are part of the pub and open 24 hours and very clean. Showers needed a key and are basic but served the purpose.
Great camping and great people. We are defo going back sometime this year. We tried it by chance because we follow xh558 all over when displaying. Train station a bit of a trek but we found it in the end.
Overall I would recommend this to anyone. Also had a pint on the last night in the pub and all the regulars are so warm and friendly. Thanks again for a wonderful stay.

Stayed here for 1 night. Last minute spur of the moment thing so was looking not to go too far.
It was about £8 for the night as I remember.
Basically its just a field next to a pub. Pitch where you like. We pitched nearish the pub as wanted to be near the toilets, which were always clean and tidy.
Seemed to be a lot of contract workers living there. They all piled in about 6 o'clock after a day at work. But never saw them again after that.
Its a very relaxed place.
Would go again, but next time will pitch away from the pub. As kept awake by people leaving and arguing while waiting for taxis.
