We went with friends who wanted to spend a weekend at a pub. What a great place to stay. Large field with electric, very flat, easy to drive across and nobody telling you where you can or can't pitch. It was also nice to be able to stay as late as we wanted on the Sunday without being chased off.
We shared the field with a marquee as there was a wedding on the Saturday but it didn't worry us or disturb us. The pub doesn't shut till midnight so the wedding went to bed before we did!
Jim and all his staff have a 'can do' nothing is too much bother attitude.
The pub is very nice, food is nice as well but I support the early comment about getting in early. Because of the wedding we ended up waiting ages for our meal on the Saturday. As a result we got free drinks and without asking we got about 40% knocked off our bill. It was obvious that customer satisfaction was put first.
We will be returning, its just a matter of when - sooner rather than later I hope.
For those using the place for the first time, use the gate into the field which is immediately to the right of the car park. Taking a 23ft caravan through the car park and past the buildings can be a bit tricky.
Spent a night here, and was very pleased with this site. This is a simple no-thrills camp site attached to the back of a pub in a quiet part and well-kept secret of Essex.
Really it is just a field, but a large, flat, dry field that is ideal for tents (no frustrating time bending pegs here!), campers or caravans. The price was £7.50 a pitch, or £9.50 for hook-up (limited to about 10 pitches) which is very reasonable. Welcomes dogs too (no extra charge either).
The facilities were attached to the pub, the toilets were in fact the pub toilets, but kept open 24 hours. They were perhaps small, I can imagine on very busy weekends it gets crowded, but they were kept clean at times, which is the main thing. There was also a shower block, where the showers cost £0.50p. To my surprise, there was also a chemical toilet disposal point.
The pub is the main feature, a fine traditional old Inn that served good food (reasonably priced) and ale. Friendly staff. A great place to spend an evening before retiring to the camp site.
There isn't much else, there is a shop in the village, and a couple of miles down the road towards Burham there was a well-stocked farm shop. Burham and Maldon are both close by (5-10 miles) and worth a visit. They are quaint estuary towns in a county not well known for that sort of thing.
Overall, this is a great place if you enjoy the simple pleasures of camping and like to get away from it.
Basically this is a pub with a large field. Toilets were clean, but only two of each. Not very busy, considering the beautiful weekend weather. Have a good look round before pitching a tent, as ground is very rutted and uneven in places. Inexpensive, but facilities are limited. Ideal if you like the simple life. Couldn't find showers, though found out later that we had to ask landlord for a key.
Setting is nice, but main road noise could be a problem for a light sleeper.
Trampoline was great for kids, but shame it had no safety netting.
We will definitely be going back, as ideal location for visiting Maldon, Marsh Farm and other attractions.
We've just purchased a new tent and wanted to test it out, the first site I saw on 'UK Campsite.co.uk' in Essex was The Huntsman and Hounds, I made the phone call and we were all but booked in.
When we arrived we were made most welcome by Jim the landlord and by some of the regulars in the Pub. A couple of drinks and out to a very spacious field, the problem we had was where to pitch as the field was so big!
All pitched up and settled in the ground was nice and soft and all the pegs went in easily.
Back to the Pub and had a very good and reasonably priced meal if you are an impatient type then get in the pub early as there could be quite a long wait for food if its busy, but the food is worth the wait.
The location is somewhat out of the way and the nearest shop in about a 5 to 10 minute drive away so do your shopping before you arrive.
The Pubs toilets are left open for 24 hour use and were kept clean, there was also the use of a shower for 50p.
I would recommend this site we will most defiantly be going back
What a great site, very basic but had everything we needed. 24 access to the pub toilets, showers in need of updating, but at least they were hot and clean. Hook up available.
Plenty of open space for the kids to play, and also a trampoline to keep them amused whilst you are in the pub. Jim the landlord is great, always there to help if you have a problem. They also serve excellent food at a reasonable price.
Never used the washing up facilities as we have our own so cannot comment on them. The only problem we had was finding the pub, we missed the sign as the hedges were overgrown (not their fault).
The site is in easy reach of the coast and there are plenty of footpaths you can explore. We will be going back again sometime this year.
Well first meet with ukcs! big field! Great for kids to play games big spaces. Toilets not too bad did not attempt showers as really only one (door that locks) Very friendly in pub do allsorts and not get thrown out! Back to basics washing up in bowls etc but makes u appreciate home comforts!
As part of a ukcampsite meet we were at this site for 10 days.
what a beautiful location, massive sun lit field, clean toilets, now at least 2 water taps and more ehu's have been added.
Jim the landlord is a nice enough chap, and goes out of his way to be a good host.
The shower block needs updating ( dissgussions were taking place a the bar as we left) although is brilliant if you have a hockey team to shower.
shower block could do with a good clean too, and hot water to the sink in there.
All in all its a basic site but is great value and lets you relax and get away to do some 'REAL' camping. I will go back defo. Trampoline was good too, but not after a drink !
What a wonderful site! So relaxing and welcoming. And what could be better than being within stumbling distance of a pub. Use of pub loos (wonderfully clean and accessible 24/7), electric hookups (5) and water tap. Really a bit reluctant to write this review as I'd rather keep this great site to myself! Will definitely return very soon.
We were here as part of a UKCampsite.co.uk members Meet.
This site is superb if you want peace and quiet on a simple, basic, yet appealing site. It is literally a massive field offering 5 hookups and numerous non electric pitches. The field is extremely flat, and pitch right and you get the sun from morning to evening.
The site has fresh water, showers, chemical disposal and more importantly a great pub, selling traditional home cooked food and all the usual great drinks, Stella, Strongbow, Guiness, alco pops etc. and a very friendly welcome indeed.
There is no playground for the kids, but with a field that big, who needs one. There is a trampoline in the pub garden which campers are allowed to use, as long as they are supervised!
This site is basic and needs some upgrading, but the owner told me he has plans for the site. The showers are in a block of 4, and are not seperated for men and women, however, great if you need to shower the kids, and you can always lock the door. Simple, yet they do the job! There is no washing up sink, however this is something that is due to be added as the site is improved.
The site is in a great location, close to the coast, rivers, history and the whole area is very flat making it great for cycling. The site is actually in Latchingdon, so don't follow the signs to Althorne, or you will go too far!
The nearest shop is about two miles away for your groceries, however there is a large Asda about 7 miles away in South Woodham Ferrers.
This is a very basic site, and if you like all singing, all dancing sites , then this is not for you. If you like to pitch where you like and enjoy the basics of camping, then come here, you will not be disappointed,
