Stayed in hole station form 3 amazing nights. We had an amazing choice of pitches to choose from, all had there own little something about them. Took me and the other half ages to decide which to choose. Finally found and chose our perfect little paradise. Quiet, peaceful beautiful surrounds. The two owners were lovely and made sure we had what we needed for our stay right at the beginning. The whole time camping we only saw the owner on the first night to check on us and I think it was only twice our fellow campers walked on past all very friendly. Best night sleep we had both had in ages. Would recommend to anybody who needs or wants just a bit of peace and down time just to think and chill and also watch the wildlife all around you. We had one Robin who stayed with us the whole time just kept hopping around from tree to tree. Will most definitely visit again, see you soon
Had a wonderful time at this beautiful campsite. Good facilities toilet and showers. Friendly owners and animals! Lots of different pitches to choose from, its nice to choose your own pitch rather than being told where your going to pitch.
If you want to 'get away from it all', Hole Station is the place to go.
We stayed in one on their rent a tent pitches, as travelling by motorcycle it's nice not to worry about taking all the gear. We were very impressed with what was provided, loads of room and plenty of kit, you really only need to bring your sleeping stuff, even had candles (but watch out for the Ninja Squirrels!).
The facilities may not be to everyone's taste, but we were happy with what was provided, in fact the showers are better than we've got at home, and certainly better than plenty of sites we've stayed at! As for the compost loos, surprisingly odour free, easy to use, and make sense!
Loads to do in the area, with places to eat and drink within walking distance.
Had an excellent three nights stay at Hole Station. The staff were all friendly and the pitches were excellent. If you like camping that is a bit more peaceful, then you will love Hole Station.
Some nice small towns nearby for food, however, we enjoyed cooking by the fireside and having a few glasses of wine.
We had an absolutely wonderful time staying at hole station the facilities are great. Kept clean and do their bit for the environment. Its so peaceful and quiet. And we enjoyed sitting by the camp fire enjoying a few drinks and a bite to eat. We will definitely be returning over the summer holidays. I would also recommend using the rent-a-tent they are of good size and quality and it is a great value for money. If you want a child free bit of peace and quiet then hole station is the place to go.
This award winning Adults Only campsite has a working 17th century watermill in a peaceful wooded valley within the Exmoor National Park. Grass and hardstanding pitches, all set beside the River Exe or the sparkling mill stream, with electric, water, drainage, and TV hook-ups. A leisurely stroll up to a weir, and an area where dogs may run free and splash in the river.
Facilities include the beautiful dog walk, free wifi, fishing, modern toilet and shower block, dog wash, working watermill (tours on most Sunday mornings), salmon pass on the weir, shop, bus service, and excellent pubs in the locality. The site has beautiful views, an abundance of wildlife and many footpaths leading directly to the Exmoor woodlands and rivers. Find out more here
We stayed at Hole Station for 4 nights mid-week at the end of July in a Rent-a-Tent. We have never used this facility anywhere but fancied a change! We had a great 3 sided & tarp roof shelter for cooking & eating with everything supplied, even water & washing up equipment. A big table & 4 chairs. Real luxury! Our tent was great as well, complete with air bed. All of this for £30 a night for 2 people. We used the camp fire each night & hired the grill equipment for cooking on.
Compost loos, as described by others, & hot showers always clean.
Great walks from the site. A visit to West Lake Farm 3 miles a way is worth a visit (check that they are open first) an independent cider maker with friendly owners only too willing to show you around & share their love of their land & wildlife.
We loved the peace & silence, so relaxing. We put our moth trap out 2 nights & were over joyed to find so many different moths, including our first ever Hawk moths. Greg enjoyed seeing them as well.
This really isn`t the place to go if you want clubs & wild parties.
Visited here looking for a quiet site without children running around our tent and that is what we got. The pitches are scattered amongst the trees with pedestrian access to them only. The owner has a small 'donkey' vehicle which he loads up with your gear and takes to your chosen pitch, so not carrying heavy things around. The pitches are well spread out, with glimpses of the other pitches through the trees. Each pitch has a small shelter tarp and a fire pit so a camp fire in the evening is a must.
The toilets are clean and the showers too, but as there were only two you had to pick you shower time carefully or face a queue. The owner was very pleasant and helpful. All in all a good value site for those who want peace and quiet with no radios etc.
A great site, definitely quality over quantity. There were what at first sight seems to be one too many instructions, but they are all written with wit, and are genuinely interesting giving background into the life of the site.
Each little clearing provides a wonderful place to pitch a tent, and the shelter is very helpful to make the camping experience much more enjoyable, as are the locally cut, nice smelling hardwood logs for sale!
We could have done with a little more light around the facilities block at night, so don't forget your torch, but otherwise all was well. The showers were better than many, being a good hot power shower, and more space than normal with space for a chair even and plenty of hooks.
A great stay, and many thanks to the interesting and welcoming owners.
We echo all the other reviews on here - we had a fantastic week at Hole Station, it was the perfect campsite for us and definitely the place to go to relax and get away from it all. Set in woodlands, each pitch is secluded and has its own cooking shelter (not that we needed it as it was sunny every day!) and fire pit. The owner and his wife who run the site are very helpful and friendly, and stocked some great local food (We recommend the fig yoghurt!). Lots of interesting birds and animals to see on the campsite, there are horses, goats and chickens and we also saw a barn owl.
There was plenty of activities to do nearby, we hired bikes from the campsite and toured the local area, stopping for a swim in a local river. The coast is nearby for surfing, and Dartmoor for hiking. The local pub (20mins walk) served a good pint and meal.
Probably the best campsite we've been to in the UK and we'll be coming back!
What a great place ! Hole Station is a campsite situated in the middle of a wonderful woodland. On arrival the cheerful owner Greg greeted us, gave us a tour of the site and thankfully offered us the use of their rent-a-tent that night, free of charge, due to the continuous downpour. If you don't want the hassle of putting up a tent etc then the rent-a-tent is a great idea. It came with a separate log-cabin type kitchen area. Fully equipped with everything you need while camping, including a table and 6 chairs.
Cars are not allowed to be parked at your pitch so there is an unloading area to unpack and a wheel barrow to move your stuff. We had a look around at each site and after Greg's advice we chose pitch 22. Nice large area in a more open part, plenty of light with an already erected shelter. Wooden bench and firepit also included ( every pitch has the shelter, bench and firepit !)
One of the best things is you have privacy. Most pitches are a few metres away from the next so no one is overlooking anyone else. The main path passes every pitch so depending where you choose you will get a lot of traffic in the morning and evenings.
The facilities are good. The reception has a fridge stocked with milk, eggs, drinks etc and plenty of wood for campfires, which is £6 for a crate. You get kindling and firelighters and we found it more than enough to last from evening til very late. The toilet block is adequate. There is only one male and one female toilet for the entire campsite which are 'dry organic', meaning there are separate units for No. 1's and No. 2's, no flushing toilets as there is no sewage system. Sawdust is used. There are two wash basins and two showers which have running hot water. Just outside there is a washing up area with hot water from a hot water urn and bowls for use. Just below the counter opposite is a freezer for storage or for using the campsites free-to-use ice packs.
A few minutes down the road there is a pub that serves hot food all day til 9pm, the local store/post office or into the town centre you have a co-op and a number of pubs and small shops.
All in all a great location with a more natural camping atmosphere. Whether for a basecamp or just a serene getaway this is the place.
