Amazing campsite! We stayed for 2 nights passing through on a cycling trip. I wouldn't say it's for everyone as it's very low impact and basic but quirky and charming at the same time.
There's only about 15-20 sites and you're quite far from your neighbours. The rent-a-tent sites look fun, as you get a small kitchen, table and chairs under a basic shelter, it has a colonial feel about it.
The fire packs are good, you let them know in advance and they provide you with everything you need for a small campfire at your site.
You can also buy local meat and eggs from them which is handy.
The showers were great, much better than I was expecting, they're low flow but the temperature and pressure are still high. The composting toilets are novel but I imagine they'd make some people cringe. They've also got full recycling and composting facilities.
It's really nice to get back to nature and to be able to do it in such an enjoyable way. Would definitely recommend it!
We spent 9 days here making the most of the double bank holidays.
We didn't want to leave such a wonderful campsite.
We decided to go to Hole Station as we love the basic campsites and the fact that you could have a campfire was an added bonus.
This campsite takes you back to what real camping should be like.
We had a fabulous pitch which we got to choose ourself. Our neighbours were camped some distance away from us through the trees.
Every morning we went up to get fresh very free range chicken eggs and the breakfast packs, burgers and sausages were wonderful. All which were cooked on our camp fire every evening and morning.
To us this was a magical campsite. It was quiet, despite there being 2 bank holidays and the car park being busy. Once in the woods everyone seemed to blend away. The owners were very friendly and always happy to help with any questions or queries. We were greated on our arrival and given a tour of the site.
Hole Station is a unique place. A wonderful campsite to really get away from it all and go back to nature. Each pitch is individual and very spacious with plenty of surrounding undergrowth and woods to separate you from most of the other campers.
The isolation and lack of noise highlights the melody of bird sounds which soon become harmonious with your stay. With a clear sky at night, the stars appear amazingly close and a pleasure to observe.
The whole campsite is very clean and carefully arranged to recycle as much waste as possible.
Campfires are encouraged and there is wood available to burn at a very good price. A short walk along the cycle track will take you to The Golden Inn, a lovely pub with good beer which also serves food.
If you get the chance, check out the Dragon Archery down the road at Dunsland Cross. There is so much to do in the surrounding area on the northern edge of Dartmoor.
We hope to be able to come back to Highampton and enjoy the experience at Hole Station again.
We love this site so much! This was our second stay at Hole Station and I think it says a lot if you return to the same site more than once! This is as close to wild camping as you can get and the pitch we had this time was absolutely fab - set in a woodland clearing you could only see other tents if you really tried to look for them!
The owner is lovely and works so hard to maintain the natural feel of the woods as well as the happiness of his campers! You can only admire his hard work and constant smile!
We will definitely be returning here year after year - our little peace of heaven, plus our two boys absolutely love it! Complete wilderness, mud, trees and dirt - a boys heaven!
The toilets take some getting used to, not because they're compost toilets (which seriously hand on heart do not smell!) but because there's only one for men and one for women and they're next door to each other which for me personally is a little close for comfort, but not enough to put me off going again!
If you want peace and tranquillity then this is the place for you - the dawn chorus in the woods is really something you have to hear to believe!
If you go into the woods today your sure of a big surprise! Loved this place, a city dwellers adventure- camping out under the stars, campfires, four legged critters running about under the tent! Stayed here for 6 nights in our own tent although the 'hire' tents are well equipped and convenient.
Everyone was really friendly and respecting the ethos of this ecocampsite. Yes, the toilet/washing facilities are a little different to the norm but trust me you do get use to it.Fresh eggs & campfire wood for a small charge. Great base for sight seeing in North Devon/Cornwall -National Trust's Castle Drogo and Lydford Gorge & the Tamer Otter Sanctuary are all well worth a visit. Beautiful beaches at Bude & Paidstow are not too far away.
Set in the heart of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - the Mendip Hills. There are 90 grass and hardstanding pitches some with hookup, for tents, caravans and motorhomes. The well laid out site has excellent shower and toilet facilities, including a family room, plus a laundry room and a well-stocked licensed shop selling local produce. Non members are welcome to book!
You can walk to the village of Priddy where you`ll find a popular pub serving food and the Priddy Good Farm Shop, selling a range of locally produced food. There are many attractions in this area of Somerset and the south west including Bath and Weston-super-Mare, and the site is ideally located, midway between Cheddar Gorge and Wells. This year we, (mum, dad and 17 year old son), had a real desire to get back to a more natural ‘no frills’ style of camping and after some research booked a week at Hole Station Camp Site. What a good decision that proved to be.
After the customary warm welcome we chose a secluded woodland pitch which easily accommodated our tent, dining shelter and the bivvy which our son built and slept in for the week. Where else can you ‘bring your own’ and ‘build your own’. Thanks again Greg for that.
Whilst the toilet, shower and dishwashing facilities are basic they were always very clean and tidy. Any trepidations we may have had about compost toilets quickly disappeared, they were odourless and far cleaner than many traditional toilets we have experienced.
In our opinion Hole Station has a lot going for it: small site, large pitches, quiet, clean, no cars on pitches, no play area/ball games, free range eggs for breakfast.
The icing on the cake, however, has got to be the camp fires. Evenings relaxing around a fire with a plentiful supply of wood and a glass (or two) of wine rounds off any day perfectly. The fire pit arrangement works so well we now have one at home!
This really is a place for slowing things down and enjoying peaceful quality time in unspoilt surroundings; a breath of fresh air – quite literally. We would have no hesitation in recommending this site to like minded people.
We wish Greg & Liz continued success with this venture, please don’t change things too much and we hope to see you again next year.
We have just spent a week at the Hole station campsite and had a fantastic time. We booked the 'rent a tent' as we have a 9 month old baby. The setting was so beautiful and peaceful. Having the tent and kitchen area all set up was a real treat and made it a much simpler experience- less time organising and more time relaxing!
The pitches are really nice and big and secluded by the woods, we really felt that we had got away from it all. Yet all the facilities you needed are close by. There is a shower unit and compost toilets, full recycling facilities and a little caravan with games and a book swap.
They also have dogs, goats, horses and chickens(you can buy the eggs from them).
It was great to be able to have fires on your pitch as most sites won't allow this.
There is a gorgeous pub in Sheepwash a couple of miles away with great food.
We would totally recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a quieter more chilled camping holiday- a real gem of a place, I'm sure we will be back soon.
We had a wonderful time. Welcomed by Greg, everything was made very clear. The compost loos although unusual did not smell (unlike some chemical ones).
Individual pitches scattered through beautiful pasture and woodland made it feel almost like wild camping. Loved the camp fires. Very quiet except for the loudest cockerel we had ever heard at 5.00 am. Think absence of that noise would be a great improvement. He outdid the dawn chorus.
The surrounding area is beautiful and unspoilt with small village with shop and pub twenty minutes walk along a quiet cycle track following the old railway line.
Hired a Rent-a-tent pitch to see whether we liked camping. Facilities were perfectly adequate - 3 tents, two for sleeping in (even though we were only 2) giving a capacity of 6, and a tent for cooking/eating. Cooker, pots and pans all supplied, and a table and chairs (even matches). Very well appointed in general.
Pitch was good, very rustic with the wood chips on the ground, and the boarded walkway to reach the tent, but you have to be a little careful. I had a little accident carrying back the washing up bowl full of clean crockery. The walkway, which is made from a lot of pallets, is not firmly grounded, and just as I was about to step on to the first pallet at the end of the walkway, somebody coming in the opposite direction stepped on the same pallet, on a corner of it, and the diagonally opposite corner rose about 100 cm in the air. Timed to perfection - just as I was about to put my foot onto the same corner which I thought would be 100cm lower -oops! Tripped, and flew headlong with the bowl flying through the air to the sound of crashing crockery, with the eyes of the whole campsite swivelling in my direction.
The walk to the pub was nice, you need a light to find your way back along a very rural path, (but tarmacced all the way). The peace and tranquility is superb, and the sound of the birds truly inspiring. There is a semi-derelict warehouse adjacent, which is the home for some owls, which although we could hear, we never actually got to see.
We really enjoyed our long weekend here, and the eco philosophy is to be commended, although the practicalities would need to be more refined before we would venture back. Things are a little Heath Robinson, and whilst we didn't mind making-do, in keeping with a low-impact lifestyle, we did feel that a fully working shower tray would be desirable, albeit even if there was just the one for male and female. We did not like the idea of having to step into the slowly draining water of the previous user. Running hot water should be a minimum requirement also, and separate washbasins for male and female. Females can be embarrassed to have to wash next to a half-stripped male, and it would be impossible for them to half-strip themselves for a good wash.
The toilets are a novel idea - small potato sacks which Greg changes regularly, held within adapted plastic barrels, housed in sawn, treated timber boxes on which a wooden toilet seat has been fixed. No wipeable surfaces around unfortunately, if some 'accidents' were to occur. Urine is taken in another receptacle. The recycling aspect of the barrels and sacks is to be commended.
The other no-no for us was the open composting bunker for food stuffs, which was located right at the back of the toilets, and so was an attraction for flies, and wasps. Some of the flies were finding their way into the toilets, but not in swarm proportions by any means.
A very enjoyable stay, all in all, but one would need to be quite tolerant of some things, to stay longer than the four days we were there.
Just come back from a week at the Hole Station and I cannot praise this place enough. Great welcome, friendly owner who shows you around, large pitch that is covered with wood shavings to keep the area dry. It also has a fire pit with each tent, wood is bought from the owner who is slowly coppicing the woodland to help bring the whole area back to life as it hasnt been looked after for 80 years! Very quiet, very eco & very central for the whole area. The toilets took a little getting used to, but were far less smelly than a lot of site with ordinary loos!
He also has some fantastic Rent a Tent plots that seemed very popular. These had a cooking tent that on rainy day (yes we had a few of them) made us very jealous!
I would recommend this site to anyone.
