We visited Languard in June 2008 in a mobile home and having seen what appeared to be a charming campsite, decided to return with the tent in 2009 for 6 days. The pitches are large and pleasant, although we had the aforementioned swing tied to a tree on our pitch and all the kids hung around it all evening. My wife wouldn't let me cut it down, said I was a grumpy old git! The indoor pool as a godsend, as the weather wasn't great and they used it every day. The outdoor pool was freezing, but the indoor one was fine. Entertainment was poor, but the bar area was OK when wanting to get out of the rain. I can only echo the other reviews about the facilities. Very old toilet and shower blocks, with mess everywhere, loo roll everywhere, excrement on the walls, etc. Only cleaned once a day by a lad. One of the toilet blocks was closed for all but one of the days we were there due to toilets being stuffed full of loo roll and overflowing, and it took 4 days to fix. The other problem was the noise at night. Despite a no groups policy there were several groups of drunk teenagers. Radios and TVs were on until 2am or 3am some nights. We had to fetch security from the main site on more than one occasion (no dedicated campsite security), and they did come over, but as soon as they went the noise started up again. Shanklin and the Isle of Wight are beautiful, so don't let it put you off visiting the island.
This could be a lovely site as its in a pretty setting with generous pitches and close to all amenities.(Morrisons and Lidl just up the road) be warned though there is no ATM machines.I think Spar in Lake has the nearest one.
The toilet block had no loo roll no soap and at times no water. You have to time your showers( not after any meal times) as when people use the taps in the washing up area it stopped the flow of water in the shower. They cleaned the block at 11am which was when people seemed to want to use them. In the end we all went to the pool to use the showers.
Water taps are few and far between so do take water containers.
The children did love the site though and were happy enough to play with a swing someone had tied in the tree. The small club was enjoyed too and the food looked good, you do have to walk down a very dark lane to get there so do take a torch.
Another thing it does need to be made a one way system, its a very narrow lane and a couple of times we had to reverse all the way back to let caravans pass.
I would go back again if they refurbished it but as it is its not worth the money you pay (its not a cheap site).
We visited Languard at the end of July last year and found the site to be excellent. The tent pitches were large, even and well maintained. The shower/toilet/sink blocks left a lot to be desired, very dated and in need of a complete re build, and the fact that a very nice couple worked hard throughout the day to keep them clean made using them bearable. The IOW is a beautiful place and we decided to return this year.
What a difference a year makes! The tent pitches were awful, sloped with potholes in, obviously no effort had been made to sort out the pitches at the end of season. The toilet blocks were an absolute shambles! We were told by a rep last year that they were getting pulled down and rebuilt. They hadnt.! Gone were the lovely couple who kept them spotless last year, to be replaced by a young lad who cleaned them once on a morning. The showers were cold and broken with alsorts of unmentionables in the cubicles, the toilets were constantly blocked with toilet roll and unflushed poo. Poo also was smeared up the walls and ground into the tiles on the floor and left there until the next morning, there was never any loo roll. The sinks to wash your plates etc in were filthy and constantly blocked. The mens toilet block, the urinals blocked and overflowed on a regular basis, urine soaked the toilets, showers and sinks were as bad as the ladies. The second shower block was blocked so badly you could smell sewerage coming up from the plugholes in the wash area! The clubhouse, where the entertainment was good last year, was now non existent, gone were the acts and turns, to be replaced with three poor lasses doing their best to entertain everyone.
This site is run by the growing 'Park Resorts' chain, which also runs neighbouring Lower Hyde and Ninham.
First thing to say is that the touring pitches are massive, plenty of room for a tent / caravan, car, and awning / gazebo and all have EHU. The touring part of Landguard is kept very separate from the statics and lodges that make up the bulk of the site. As others have said, access is down a narrow lane which could be a problem for bigger units - no such problems for us campers though.
As you would expect in August, it was very busy, so despite the big pitches it did feel a little claustrophobic. The main reason is that the touring area has no playing field for the kids and teens to hang out / kick footballs / throw frisbees / ride bikes etc. Towards the end of our stay, more empty pitches appeared which served this purpose OK and did give the whole site a much friendlier feel.
General facilities are good. Showers / toilets are cleaned at the beginning and end of the day, so either go in very early or very late. Hot water never a problem at any time of day. Clubhouse and pool area are clean, staff are generally friendly, particularly in the shop for some reason! Entertainment every night - bingo, cabaret, kids discos etc - but can't vouch for the general quality as we only visited once. Indoor pool is very good and best suited to younger children (up to about aged 7 / 8), outdoor pool is basic and very cold.
Camp location is excellent - 15 minute walk to Shanklin Beach, 10 minute walk to Morrisons or Somerfield for provisions, marked paths can take you directly from the back of the touring area off into the Downs which is great. There's a bus stop right outside the campsite where you can catch local buses. The bus services on IoW are excellent and a £40 7-day Family Rover ticket is highly recommended - ours paid for itself three times over.
Overall I'd recommend Landguard - friendly, not too big and generally well maintained - with the caveat that it does seem to be VERY popular in the Summer Holiday period, a recommendation in itself I suppose.
We have just returned from a 10 day camping holiday at Landguard. The site is good on the whole, good sized pitches and a very good camping area. The warden was very friendly and helpful as the original pitch we were give was on a slope and he gladly changed this for us. The sad thing about this site is the toilet/shower blocks leave a lot to be desired. They are very dated and we felt the cleanliness was certainly not the best, in need of being updated and cleaned on a more regular basis, unfortunately this has put us off returning to this site, but if they were to be updated then we would definitely consider it. The kids (aged 6) loved the indoor swimming pool although the changing rooms were really small. They also thought the park was good but this was on the static side of the park and there was only a little toddler park on the touring site which could also be better for the amount of children that played there. We felt the site was very safe for the children to play and drivers were very cautious. As for the Isle of Wight, has said in previous reviews WOW, we fell in love with the place and have already booked to return although not to this site.
Was expecting great things form this site. 1st impessions were not as expected - BUT READ ON!
Pictures on website show Static park - not touring area - looks very different!
Touring area accessed down very narrow (6'6') lane - only 200 mtrs or so. Pitches size are HUGE but very tight roadways around site to navigate 1st! Kiddies play area very small but tree swing kept my 2 (age 5) happy all week. Loads of space for children and adults to play! Toilets/showers seem dated but are cleaned regularly - take your own loo roll! Water points , elsan , bins etc at regular intervals. You then have to walk back down this narrow unlit lane to access facilities on static area - scary at night! Pool much smaller than looks in picture and SO COLD AND THATS JUST THE INDOOR POOL! Didn't risk the outdoor 1! Club is adequate size - although if you want to enter talent comps take your own backing discs or you have to sing acapello! Good kiddies entertainment although lacking in variety. Restaurant average - frozen chips etc. Now the Isle of Wight! WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW - what a beautiful place. No vandalism, no grafitti, no police, no rubbish just unspoilt counrtyside, seaside and towns. The water at Freshwater bay is as clear as tap water. As a family (2 adults, 1 teenager and 5yr old twins) we fell in love with all of the Island and have looked at house prices there since we got home 4 days ago!
I did grow to love Landguard as I realised what a lovely place it was. Mature trees, no noise at night at all, safe for children and cheaper than most sites on the Island - we have already booked for 2 weeks in August. It is not the best site I have ever stayed on - but as a base for touring is excellent - if you are prepared for the little things that are lacking at this site. Very mixed review I know - I think this is a 'Marmite' site - love it or hate it. Once last bit of advice - Pay and display carparks everywhere! On arrival buy a tourist parking permit for the week £20 - unlimited parking. (2 hours on own costs £1.90 - so you definitely will save).
Our tent is 7ft square and only just fitted, we had to park the car in front of the tent as no room at the side otherwise we would of run over the next tents guy ropes. The park for the children was ok if they were under 3, there was no space in the camping area for the kids to place ball games without them disturbing other campers. We were pitched on the main thoroughfare between the two sites so at 11.30 when my kids are sleeping you got all the families walking back from the club. Only 5 showers to service over 100 pitches if not more queuing became an unwelcome pasttime, glad they are putting in new showers soon.
We have just returned from a stay at Landguard and I can definitely say that we wish we had found it earlier. The pitches are plenty big enough approx. 7m by 7m and no one had any complaints. The staff were all friendly and helpful. Having just been taken over by Park Resorts the ageing showers so we were told are being rebuilt at the end of the season but were still adequate for the purpose. Being next door to another Park Resort (lower hyde) its well worth using their clubhouse as its a bit bigger and for the small ones has better playgrounds. But I can say we will probably return in the very near future.
Second time at this site this time in June. The only change was the owners. The site is now owned by the static site next door. No extra charge to use their facilities. This included Bar, swimming pool, indoor and out. Site was as clean as my last visit, new warden but just as friendly as before. Can't really ask for a better site for camping, Shanklin is just a walk away, plenty to do, places to eat and places to drink all very friendly and child friendly. Bus and train travel all over the island. Will be going back next year.
I stayed here in May 2007, The site was very clean and the staff very helpful. This seems like a good time of the year to visit the site, as it was only about 50% full and we could chose any pitch we wanted, Showers were clean and tidy always had hot water, maybe something to do with the site not being full. Wardens very polite and helpful. If you are after the mod cons of some new sites this site may not be for you but if you want a nice quiet site to use as a base camp for your holiday then you can't ask for any place better. Some campers seem to think that the pitches are on the small side but we found the pitches to be on the large size compared to some sites and overall flat.
Site is only a 10-15 mins walk into Shanklin town, and there is everything there you could ask for.
Will be back next year to see what the site is like in June.
