We have just returned from a week at Alpine Grove. We wanted a site with a large pitch that allowed fires of some sort. (Fire pits with a generous supply of logs are £15 to hire per night).
On arrival we were shown to the pitch and offered the use of a long EHU lead (with a £20 deposit) in case ours was too short. The pitches are not laid out in regimented rows, rather they are dotted around the site among the trees.
Our pitch was lovely, under tall oak trees with plenty of room for the tent and the car. There was also a picnic table, although this was a bit wonky. I noticed plenty of newer ones around the site so that was not typical.
The toilets and showers are clean and the hot water is warm enough. There is also a family / disabled bathroom if needed. Washing up facilities are good and there are plenty of taps for water.
The kids really enjoyed the site, the pool was a nice addition and was well used even when it was raining. Luckily it's only a short trot to the warm showers when you get out!
The playground is nice and there is the added fun of trails around the site that the kids can explore with their friends, look out for the bomb shelter! The playground shuts at dusk and that is enforced so kids aren't too noisy in the evening. All was quiet by about 10. 30 at the latest and there was never excessive noise.
The shop is nice, selling lovely bread and baked goods, local eggs and meat. Fresh bread can be ordered for breakfast if you ask before 2. 30 pm, excellent! They also sell pocket money toys, felt pens etc which was great for the rainy day we had. There is also Saturday night BBQ, very good local burgers and sausages at OK prices.
The only negative we found was that the laundry facilities seemed expensive and there was only one washer which seemed in constant use and the dryer took a huge amount of tokens to dry a load.
Overall I would say Alpine Grove is a well ran, family site which is in a great spot for exploring the south west. We really enjoyed our stay and would be happy to return. Yes, it's not cheap but it's certainly well ran and friendly.
We were shown to our pitch and the amenities by the owner. All the family were very friendly and helpful.
The shop was well stocked and very reasonably priced. The play area was in good condition and we had fun playing table tennis under the trees, watching the butterflies dance as we played. The pool though small was enough for a cool down and there were plenty of seats and sunbeds to relax on.
We hired bikes for the day which were £6. 00 for the day and we were given a map to assist our journey which took us through some lovely scenery along an old railway track which was pretty flat. Not all of it was an easy ride though!
The pitches were well spaced apart and the site was very clean, showers included.
Locally there are some nice pubs and Chard has a variety of shops and supermarkets. Being right on the borders for Dorset, Devon and Somerset it made for a fantastic stay with plenty to do whatever the weather. 3 days wasn't long enough.
Lyme Regis and the mackerel fishing is a must. Look out for their Regatta week in August, lots of fun!
We stayed at Alpine grove for 9 nights at the end of July beginning of August.
The campsite is a lovely site within driving distance of many activities and places to see but not so easy to reach places if you want to leave the car and walk.
The toilet block seemed a little bit small for the amount of people camping, there was queues for the toilets and showers at peak times. The water on the whole was hot but at some times during the day was quite cold.
The owners on the campsite are helpful and friendly. There was a lot of chilren on the site and the facilities were child friendly with a play ground and swimming pool.
The pitch we had was on the 'meadow' which is a triangular area of grass. This was a good pitch although the ground was uneven due to sunken soil around the drain pipes. Our friends camped in a woodland area which seemed cosy but their tent got messy with leaves and twigs getting brought in by their children.
Overall the campsite was good and met our needs without any major problems. In the surrounding area I would avoid Lyme Regis beach and go to Beer or Charmouth which are much quieter and prettier places away from the crowds.
This is a lovely site we took our 2 kids, dog and grandparents with us. We had 2 pitches near the Shop and Toilet block. Although you are in a wood there are no problems with tree roots.
The site is great for dogs a lovely little walk for them in the wood. I was a little worried about other reviews talking about dog mess, no need to worry we did not see any while we were there everyone was obviously using the bin provided.
The site is well tended by the owner. The shower blocks are very clean and provide all you could need with nice hot free showers.
The kids play park was well used by our 10 and 13 year old as was the pool that they said was lovely and warm. The shop was basic but had sweets and ice cream for the kids so all was well!
The area is lovely, there is a tesco a 5 min drive away, a wetherspoons pub in chard plus a few takeaways. The area is lovely we went on the seaton tram which was enjoyed by all especially the dog ( go from colyton too seaton as the parking is free and seaton is a bigger place to look around).
Becky falls a good day out for families and the dog. Forde abbey was a lovely day out too. Crealy park was enjoyed by the kids although a little expensive when there were still some attractions you had to pay for inside, but the kids loved feeding the goats and guinea pigs etc.
What did we do with our dog while visiting crealy etc. that don't allow dogs? I highly recommend Joy from creature comforts in chard 01460 65341. She looked after our dog for a couple of days and even picked him up from the site, she is a rare gem!
I would highly recommend this site and area and would use this site and dog sitter if in the area again.
Just returned from a 2 night stay. A fantastic site. We had the choice on where to pitch and chose a pitch at the edge of the trees and found that after a night of rain was not quite a good idea due to the large gathering of water at the tent entrance! Oh well you live and learn (our inexperience shining through!).
The toilets and showers were clean and tidy. The site shop had the basics and if you needed anything they didn't have, there were shops local near to the site. The site owners were very helpful and friendly and made us feel very welcome.
We hired one of the pit fires for £15. 00. This was very good value for money, coming with a large pile of logs to burn and forks to toast the marshmallows with! A must for the camper whether tent or caravan.
There is a swimming pool, playground and electric hook ups on site of which we never used.
Well maintained facilities including hot showers, toilets, washing up sinks and numerous water taps! Start the day with a delicious breakfast bap and tea / coffee onsite before venturing out to the famous Cheddar Gorge, only five minutes away! Lovely dog walks direct from the site. Have just returned from an excellent weekend at Alpine Grove.
A really friendly welcome from Richard who told us the best places to pitch. He even offered a long ehu if ours wasn't long enough.
We pitched in a shady spot under some trees and it was perfect.
Very picturesque.
We hired a fire pit for the night and even though it was £15, it was well worth the money. It came with a big basket of logs and the toasting forks. The kids loved it! When we ran out of logs they went 'hunting' in the woods for more.
The showers and washing areas are basic but very clean and well kept. The water was always nice and warm. Hairdryer is a bargain at 20p.
Shop was limited but it had what I needed.
The swimming pool was lovely and warm, and again very clean.
The kids loved the play area and trampoline, had trouble pulling them away!
Lyme Regis is a 20 minute drive away and it was lovely. Very quaint.
Will definitely be returning to Alpine Grove.
Oops almost forgot to mention Freddie and Murphy, the site dogs. They are absolutely gorgeous. The children looked forward to their daily visits!
Just had a 3 night stay at Alpine Grove, last minute decision to go away. Phoned the site warm welcome from Richard, nothing too much trouble even though this was a very busy weekend. Got the same warm welcome once there.
Offered different pitches we chose in the main open with hook up - we had a long lead, but offered one if we didn't as hook-up points are dotted about, more free range style camping.
The hard standing offers more standard pitch layouts but we like the idea of being in the trees. Toilet/shower, as described on web site.
Shop very limited for food stuff so best to stock up before travel as local shops are a drive away and if you turn up late evening as we did then good to have food and booze in as nearest pub 1.5 miles away. Great setting, lots of tracks etc. to explore foot/bike.
Pool not open so shame as this hot weather I'd loved to of dipped a toe in. If you like stars then on a clear night get some lovely glimpses through the trees.
We hired a fire pit (£15) as a treat for our last night, loved it but a little bit pricey for every night so next time think we will bring our own. But you are allowed to forage for more wood so not bad really - we did as wood burns through quickly.
Will be returning again soon, fire pit or alike in hand. Kids love the free range play area (e.G. The whole campsite), but all quiet by about 10 ish.
Dogs are very welcome, most were on leads - the odd owner didn't comply but this wasn't enforced. So nice not to be in a very formal sea of a line of white vans!
What a fantastic site - Having had problems in breaking down in our old VW on the way down, we were greeted by Richard the owner who helped my wife immensely in setting up our caravan (I was stuck with the VW) as this was our maiden voyage - His knowledge of caravans was excellent and nothing was too much to ask for.
The facilities were clean and tidy with Hot water at anytime of the day. A nice and peaceful site especially after 11pm.
The site was excellent, child friendly and our children thoroughly enjoyed themselves as did the dog. We would recommend this site for 1st time campers as well as campers with Children. With Lyme Regis about 20 minutes away it is a good base and will recommend to friends.Overall an excellent site
No one could deny this site rates for the setting; it was beautiful, but it’s a shame that the rest of the experience didn’t quite match up to it.
We happened to go away for a long weekend over the August bank holiday, so I guess it was never going to be a perfect experience – possibly the busiest camping weekend of the year. But never the less you do expect certain things as standard.
The facilities block was not bad in all honesty. But they did want to charge us £2.50 for the use of the family room per use. Secondly the facilities were rather grubby and limited – ie not enough for the amount of campers on site. There was also not hot enough water in the washing up sinks.
The unmarked pitches in the central ‘meadow’ are the not the best in the site, as this area seems to also be used as a general play ground – and we had our tent bombarded by both cricket and footballs.
The site dogs are lovely, affectionate and great with kids. But behind the fluff or Freddie there is another side, the sneaky terror that skips into people’s tents to yomp up the leftovers, just leaving the present of pee and poop by the door. It’s hard to dislike him though, he is so adorable, but a bit of a scally wag.
That said, the owner Richard was really helpful. He showed us to our pitch and advised the best direction etc to position ourselves. He also gave us lots of great tips for local walks and days out – top marks for that. The shop has a limited stock of general items, but great for the kiddies sweeties, and the local bacon and sausages can definitely be recommended.
What wonderful site this is. We used it as break on our long journey back from Cornwall as its just off the A303 near chard.
The site owners are very welcoming and make you feel at home within minutes of speaking to them.It appears its a well run but laid back site and it works well.
The pitches are a mix of grass, gravel and forest. We were lucky enough (depending how you look at it) to be on a pitch within the forest areas.
We mentioned when booking our tent size so the owners ensured we had plenty of space. The pitch itself was nestling nicely amongst some very mature trees and bushes with plenty of surrounding space for our car and trailer.
The advantage of this type of pitch is that you get a lot of noise insulation from the playpark area as it gets darker, great if you want to get the littluns off to sleep.
Downsides are you don't get a lot of sun as the trees provide a good protective canopy against the suns rays, so sun lovers ask to be pitched near the main entrance open areas.
Pitches on this site allow for big tents easily and we saw lots of big tent setups.
The play area is great for the kids and as its not floodlit the kids stop playing in it by 10pm as its too dark.
After 10pm it goes quiet quickly around the site.
The showers and toilets are cleaned daily and always easy enough to use with minimal waiting times when we used them.
There is a washing up area around the back of the shower block and also recycling bins.
Outside of the site there are a few walks and cycle routes to take.We took a lovely sunday stroll to the cosy inn pub for sunday lunch. The site owner was kind enough to draw us a map of how to get there and ensured we did get there !
Just outside the campsite their are a few worldwar pillboxes scattered about, the kids loved exploring these.
The site allows fires within a fire pit or bbq and wood can be collected from around the site or you can hire a firepit with wood but seemed a bit pricey at £15. If the owner is reading this bear in mind you can buy a cheap bucket bbq down in chard for £8 so not the best value to hire one.
The shop has bits you would need but the local town of chard has some good butchers and supermarket too.
There is a small warm swimming pool on the site which is popular with the kids.
We liked staying here and spoke to quite a few fellow campers who were returning for their 2nd or 3rd time which says it all really.
Oh one last thing there is a lot of wasps around the woods so come prepared for them,it may be only due to the hot summer we have had this year but we were visited by them constantly.Bottle traps caught some of them but a waspinator is what we would bring next time when we visit.
Overall its a very nice site and child friendly too as the tracks around the camp mean cars cannot go too fast and are generally away from most areas the kids wander around in.
Set in the heart of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - the Mendip Hills. There are 90 grass and hardstanding pitches some with hookup, for tents, caravans and motorhomes. The well laid out site has excellent shower and toilet facilities, including a family room, plus a laundry room and a well-stocked licensed shop selling local produce. Non members are welcome to book!
You can walk to the village of Priddy where you`ll find a popular pub serving food and the Priddy Good Farm Shop, selling a range of locally produced food. There are many attractions in this area of Somerset and the south west including Bath and Weston-super-Mare, and the site is ideally located, midway between Cheddar Gorge and Wells. Found this campsite on the UKCampsite website where the reviews made it very enticing. We were not disappointed and after the first time stay, we returned two weeks later. Owners were most welcoming and friendly and after showing us a variety of campsites to choose from, left us to ourselves to decide and settle in.
We chose to pitch our tent in one of the wooded sites where you have absolute privacy, however if that is not to your liking, you can also choose to camp in the open or on the grassed area with trees around you. There are also hard standing areas for caravans and motorhomes. There are electric hookups, though we do not have the facilities to use them.
The toilet facilities were very clean with four toilets and three showers in each of the ladies and mens adjoining shower block. There were outside dish washing area with four sinks and nearby were all the recycling bins. The hot water could have been hotter, but not a real issue.
There are walking trails that lead right from the campsite and if you like walking you can easily walk to Forde Abbey which is two miles from the campsite.
We noticed there were lovely facilities for children - a trampoline, large climbing area, swings and an outside table tennis table. You can buy fresh eggs and sausages from the on site shop and we highly recommend the sausages which were excellent and very meaty! We only stayed three nights on both occasions, but would definitely return here again and again because we loved the privacy and large size of the camping sites in the wooded areas.
Only stayed here for one night, but found this site to have enough appeal to make us want to go back.
Great for kids, with a playground, trampoline and a wooded area set aside for them to have all sorts of adventures. Never used the heated pool but it did look good.
Shower and toilet blocks were minimal, but clean and with plenty of hot water. Despite there only being two showers in the mens block I never experience a queue.
Pitches were well spaced so you always felt comfortable and relaxed. We stayed in the forest area, which means a few twigs under the ground sheet, but it provided a bit of extra cover being able to set up under trees.
Overall a nice site, in a great setting, with a relaxed atmosphere. Will definitely be going back.
Just returned from an 8 night stay at this centre.
Arrived with a warm welcome from the owner Richard, very helpful and kind.
Lovely site nestled in the trees. Firepits are a great idea, but we brought our own with us and it saved a lot of money as they £15 per night.
Only 3 showers in the ladies bathroom you had to time it right so you did not have to queue as it was very busy. My husband reports there are only 2 showers in mens very busy also.(But it is school holidays).
Toilets were always clean and tidy as was the site really.
If anyone is interested washing machine £2.50, tumble dryer £1.00 all with tokens from the shop.
Hair dryer 20p.
Great park for the children mine were 12, 10, 8 and 6. But they did prefer to ride their bikes in the woods and along the cycle routes.
Mobile chip van well worth a visit, thoroughly enjoyed ours and not to expensive.
Great central location for travelling, we met some wonderful people.
Sorry my negative points. Lots of dog poo around you seem to find it everywhere. I actually got very annoyed towards the end of our stay as I cannot remember how many times my children came back with it all over there feet. Dogs also urinated on peoples tents. As you can imagine very annoying and disgusting.
Pitch sizes were ok.
I think this site is expensive we paid £39.50 per night
We've just returned from a 4-night stay at this site and would definitely return. We were greeted by a very friendly welcome and immediately shown to our pitch - one very minor point is it would have been useful to have been given a little local info on places to eat, pubs, shops etc. Obviously, we could have asked, but by the time we were set up and ready to pop out, the site shop was closed! On that note, we would recommend the Route 66 American Diner in Axminster, a very unique dining experience. We tried River Cottage, but as it was 9pm, we were told that the chef wouldn't be cooking anymore main dishes - a little bizarre for a Saturday night!
We also ate out one evening at the Cotley Inn in nearby Wambrook - the owners here are very friendly and extremely accommodating, particularly with regard to children's' meals.
Back to the site.We were located in a small woodland part very close to the play area which was great as we had 3 children aged 7 to 10 so this was ideal and we felt very comfortable letting them go off by themselves. The pitch was extremely ample and very private. The shower / toilet block was more than adequate - on arrival, I wondered if 3 showers and 3 loos would be enough, but it was fine.I only had to wait for a shower one morning and that was only for about 5 minutes. They were also kept very clean and well stocked with loo rolls etc.
The shop is adequate for necessities, but we travelled into Chard to do our 'proper' shop at Sainsburys. The pool is a nice touch, although a bit crowded at times.
The fire pits are a great idea and we loved using it - it certainly took the chill off the evening! We also hired one of their new electric bikes which was an absolute bargain (£20 for one day) and a great idea for those of us who wouldn't otherwise have gone on a 15-mile bike ride!
All in all, a very nice, well maintained site for a relaxing break. We would have no hesitation in recommending this site.
Lastly, we thoroughly enjoyed our daily visits from Freddie the resident American Cocker Spaniel!
Some pitches had sun but ours was so dark, small and set in the woods, we were not given the choice. The kids enjoyed the pool which was small but warm and it was so annoying that the owners closed it at 5.30pm !
It was sandwiched between 2 roads and you took your life in your hands if you went for a dog walk. Not many nice walks unfortunately either from site. Expensive also, we paid half the price last year at a great site in Wales. Owners even charge for a photocopy of a walk ! The usual campsite rule of keeping dogs on a lead at all times was not enforced by all(only by us and a few others), the owners dogs roamed around the site pooing and weeing. Not nice.
We had some nice trips to Lynton (2hr drive) and Cheddar Gorge (1 hr), Lyme Regis (20min) Beer had nice lunch, Donkey Santuary -free!, Axminster (a dive) and Seaton (horrible) Tram ride what a ripoff !
