What a lovely site, a credit to the new Managers and the Club. The new facilities block is super. The site is so pretty and tranquil. Traci the assistant showed us to our pitch, and was very helpful, friendly and informative. Nothing was too much trouble for her. Haltwhistle is a charming little town, with a Morrisons supermarket. We had a meal at the Black Bull Inn, which was excellent and reasonable priced. The surrounding countryside is beautiful with rolling hills and views for miles. Hadrian's Wall is right on the doorstep. Apart from the climb out of site, cycling is good. A disused railway line makes for easy, safe family cycling. The staff were all so friendly. This is what makes this Club so great. We will definitely be going back.
The road to the site is steep as other reviewers have mentioned, well worth it for the location is wonderful. We were met by Traci one of the wardens, she was friendly and helpful with both site & local
Information. She informed us about the parking situation at Hadrian's wall which was most useful.
Fantastic site we loved everything about it, peaceful next to the river. All we could hear in the evenings was the flow of the river & the birds roosting, lovely.
The facilities were immaculate making for happy campers. A proper campsite.
This is a perfect campsite for couples with dogs, my wife and I loved it that much we stayed another 3 days with our two cocker spaniels and I must say they had the time of their life to.
The site is the perfect size, the toilet blocks were I good clean order every day, and the staff were their to help at any time, and they did help us, very kind as well. Haltwhistle town is just a 5 minute drive and very kind people and helpful, there is loads to do if you want to drive around such as walk haidrians wall (steel rig) and go see the famous tree from the film Robin Hood :-) my wife loved that.
Beautiful site and surrounding a must for all couples, not that good for kids as nothing for them to do.
We returned to this site which has become one of our favourites for four days in April. Its beautiful secluded location on the banks of the South Tyne river keeps drawing us back. It has all the spotlessly clean facilities we have come to expect on Camping and Caravan Club sites and the staff are always very friendly and helpful. We enjoy the walks around the site in the National Trust woodland and other nearby walks. The area is steeped in Roman Britain history and has many fascinating attractions such as Hadrian's Wall, the Roman Army Museum and the ongoing excavation of Vindalanda which provide endless interest. We'll be back again soon!
Just returned from Burnfoot village campsite and it is a very peaceful campsite, (apart from the sounds of nature which we don't mind). We spent a week there which was our first full camping holiday in a tent!
The site is well managed and the staff are very helpful and friendly. We had plenty of room around us. But and big but, you need good rock pegs and a good hammer, as the ground was very rocky where we were.
We were placed at the end of the site, which was a fair walk to the toilet and washing block, but they are very clean but there is only two showers in each block, so they can be delays when the site is busy. But a lot of people only use this site as a pit stop. There is only three washing sinks for pots they get busy so you sometimes have to wait, and there is plastic drainers which I thought needed a good wash or doing away with.
we were bitten by flies and midges and other people were bitten worse than us so take your jungle spray because you will need it! We think it because of trees surrounding the site.
There is a shop on site but not over big on stock just the necessities. And also has a washing machine and dryer £3. 50 a wash and £1 a 20 mins dry.
We took our little dog and there is a dog walk through the woods but the paths ways are over grown not the best dog walk.
Excellent walk to Lamley viaduct and Hadrians wall lots of other walks if that's what you like.
Haltwhistle does have a co-op and a sainsburys supermarket and fish and chip shops. About 30 mins drive up the road is Hexam, nice place, and has Tesco & Aldi.
Haltwhistle Club Site is set in a lovely quiet location. The warden met us upon arrival and explained all of the facilities around the Site. Pitches are adequate size, toilets and showers are spotless and heated. Good walking and cycling from the Site. Local pub 1/2 mile from the site. Wi-Fi available too.
Idyllic spot beside south tyne river ( very fast flowing and completely accessible from site, parents beware), and Bellister woods. Perfect spot for those with dogs but I would have been worried sick if had children with us.
Wardens extremely friendly and helpful. Washrooms very dated but spotlessly clean and shower water hot, plentiful, and NOT on timer button. Lots of info on local walks and placed to see. Shop with necessities, wifi at £2 per day. Good TV reception.
Sadly site badly let down by lack of investment on maintenance of pitches and road. I know we have had a very wet spring but no hard surface left on majority of road and pure mud. Our hard standing pitch alongside river also worn down to the soil, a nightmare keeping shoes and dogs clean, less muddy in woods! High usage areas- beside manually operated barrier, around waste bins and route to washrooms a quagmire, for want of putting down some gravel. Muddiest site ever stayed on and we gave had some wet stays in lakes and Scotland! Great shame because this site could be a gem. Not the standard of the usual C and C Club Site.
Site in peaceful and sheltered location amongst trees alongside river. Small site. Plenty of loos but only 2 showers so you would have to choose your time carefully in busy periods. Sheltered washing up area, everything clean and cared for (no facilities available during cleaning). We booked on the last minute and the wardens squeezed us in, but advisable to book in good time and ask to avoid area under trees unless you are in a motorhome as it was impossible to peg out (even with rock pegs) due to extremely hard ground, my tent blew over in a gale due to inadequate pegging. The warden was kind enough to ring me and let me know (thankyou) so I was able to get back and stand it up before any damage was done. Site handy for Haltwhistle, Hadrian's Wall etc. Due to main road nearby (which was out of earshot of the site). Don't miss the oversized fish and chips from Oceans chippy in Haltwhistle. Delicious but unless you are doing hard physical work a portion between 2 might do you. Hexham is further away and has a lovely abbey and has more shops/supermarkets.
Just back from a week on this site. I'm not generally a fan of Club sites as they tend to pack you in with little or nothing to provide pitch privacy. This is no different and the site was full for a lot of the week.
However I really liked this site. There is something about it that is really welcoming. Being in a clearing in the woods when the sun shines, there is a lot of dappled sunlight on site which is always nice.
There was a young resident hedgehog on site too that would come out on an evening and snuffle around near reception - quite oblivious to the comings and goings of everyone else.
Site needs more toilets, showers and gravel. When it rains the site does get boggy and there is a fair amount of mud - more gravel would help both around the access road and near reception / chemical disposal point etc. Also the small track that runs around the site is fairly pot-holed in places.
There is little or nothing to do for kids. There is no play area and no ball games are allowed. The site is also bounded on one side by the South Tyne river - quite fast flowing. So this is definitely more suited to adults, even though it isn't strictly an adult only site.
There seemed to be two clean water points but only one waste water point. Also given the pitches are packed in, there is no path that crosses the central area. If you don't want to cross someones pitch to get water (which I don't), then you have no option but to walk around the whole site to get to the waste water.
Others have mentioned the steep & narrow access road. It is but it is perfectly passable with care. I wouldn't like to meet anyone coming the other way though!
Haltwhistle is nice, but there is very little here. I did try the Indian take-away and the food was very good - it was also still piping hot by the time I got it back to the site. I also ate at the Milecastle Inn just North of the town which was decidedly average.
Hexham is only 15 miles away with good road access. There is much more to do and see in Hexham and far more restaurants etc.
My primary purpose of this visit was to walk some of Hadrian's wall. It is simply breath-taking if you're prepared to put in the effort and walk the best section (Greenhead through to Housesteads).
Overall, despite a few niggles, this site is lovely and I will definitely return.
