Loved, loved, loved this site. Set in a very foresty area, the feel of the place was good and the pitches were level and plenty of space between them. Haltwhistle itself is a good 3 mile walk away but along a cycle path so very safe. Not a lot in Haltwhistle but you can get the train from there to Hexham which was lovely and well worth a visit. Facilities were a little old but very clean (although my husband thought the mens showers and loos could have been cleaner) although not enough showers for the amount of people on the site - 3 in the ladies and the same in the gents. Camp site owners take note: We need more showers. Other than that, the staff were very friendly and helpful and there is a lovely pub about a mile walk away. Wished we could have stayed longer and will definitely be back.
We know the site well, and use it often as it's in a useful stop-over location but also has plenty of interest in easy distance. In our week's touring, this was the cheapest site at just under £13 for 2 adults and EHU on hardstanding, very good value - we'd expected the usual £18. (Yes, it's more expensive for non-members, but you recoup the membership fee in less than a week. )
The managers were welcoming, and helped us choose a pitch that suited us. A motorhome service bay has been built recently. No separate facilities for disabled people or a family room but the closure for toilet cleaning was shorter and later in the morning than most other CCC sites. The trees sheltered us from the worst of the wild weather, and it's a lovely quiet setting - the sound of the river was very relaxing. The site road was muddy with potholes, and the grass soggy, but there had been a lot of rain recently.
The dog loved the walk in the woods next door (wellies essential), but the river was too high for her to safely go swimming. The site seemed to be popular for fishing. There is free BT WiFi on site, but you may need a laptop and / or sit outside the office - my iPod wouldn't connect. We'll be back again in future, for sure.
As it says steep and narrow approach to site. The site is located on the edge of the south river tyne. Barrier on arrival not automatic you have to use arm power,
The site is small and liable to flooding, so watch the kids if only young as there is some deep water and the river can flow fast.
There is no park on site, no ball games allowed etc. However our kids 9, 7, 6 enjoyed it, riding their bikes, fishing and playing in the puddles. Negative points over.
The site has a shower/toilet block that were kept clean at all times. The showers were of good pressure and lots of hot water, also there are fresh flower in the toilet block (nice touch).
There is a small shop which was open for a couple of hours a day, selling all your basic needs.
The site is ideal for walkers (hadrians wall or other walks) or just chilling out around your van or tent.
All in all a good site (but more for adults than kids)
We have just returned from this site after a wet and very windy weekend.
On arrival we were greeted nicely in reception and shown to our grass with electric pitch no40 at the bottom of the site in the middle as the warden said he had seeded all others. From here you do feel like you are in a goldfish bowl as vans are all around you with the best pitches overlooking the river or against the trees where as the tent part was open oval shaped space.
We were given the usual leaflet with the dos and don'ts and noticed that between 11am and 12.30pm there was no toilet facilities or shower so they could be cleaned which is okay if you are in a van but not for us in tents (this needs to be addressed)
Also if you go for any longer than a couple of days and plan on using the washing machine this costs you £3. 50 and the dryer £1 for 20 minutes
If you have a van you will probably like this site but for people in tents there isnt much to see, so sorry but we wont be returning as there are far better sites.
Just got back from a lovely bank holiday weekend here. Pitches are very spacious and 17 new hardstanding ones have been added this year. If you do have a caravan I would recommend booking a hard standing as the grass area in the middle does get water logged. Having said that it did poor down for 2 of the 3 nights we were there.
Tv reception is excellent even though your in a dip surrounded by trees and the dog walks are also excellent from the site.
Being with BT for our home broadband you get BT fon and openzone free in a wifi hotspot. This is the first site we have got this from and was a bonus. The site does offer it's own wifi for £2 a day which is also good value.
You can fish from the river which has easy access from the site so keep an eye on little ones and there are a few ponds in the dog walk area to so don't let them play without an adult.
The approach road is down a single track road and having been mentioned before is on a 12% steep hill. We didn't have any problems with this towing with a 2 ltr diesel touran and a 13ookg caravan but if you are underpowered it could be a problem.
There's a sainsburys and a coop in Haltwhistle as well as a fish & chip shop, Chinese takeaway and Indian takeaway. There's also an outdoor swimming pool which is open all weather from June to sept. It looked good but as it was raining we didn't fancy it!
A very lovely site with great helpful wardens. Will definitely be returning.
We discovered this gem by accident after needing to buy some caravan stuff whilst staying on another site nearby. We awere glad we did. After having trouble at the other site we relocated part way through our holiday to this site.
It's in a lovely spot, right next to the river. It also offers free trout and salmon fishing from the site - an addedd bonus. Plenty of trout showing when I was there.
The shop is well stocked and is run by friendly and helpful staff. It is closed for times during the day, but if the staff are around they will open it for you. Really handy.
The site is small and is a typical oval style field. The toilets and showers are clean and tidy, well looked after and comfortable to use.
We will definitely be visiting again. We had no trouble with midges, none about at all.
Nice welcome and directed to pitch, it felt a little regimented as to how far to park your car from the caravan and which side to put it.
Lovely setting by the river which was fast flowing after heavy rain the week before.
Toilet block and shower excellent, plenty of hot water, no timer button.
Wash up facilities good except for the permeating smell from the chemical toilet disposal point, it was stinking. Felt sorry for the tent that had been pitched next to it, health and safety would have a field day.
Actually sat here on site as I type this, hostage in my own motorhome, Friday 20th May 2011
Never seen as many flies, not the usual bothersome few, but swarms. Maybe just a seasonal thing, or something to do with the river bank location
If you click the link from here you will be taken to the website and be convinced it will cost you around £14 as a non member, Take care, it is easily misread and works out at over £20 mid season. As a non member you get stung £7 more plus the non member serviced pitch charge
It is a very tidy site with clean facilities and nice staff, but if like me TV is a must, forget it, no satellite signal due to location and giant trees
At £21.00 a night as not member's to the 'friendly club'
There is a good pub a mile away, but to add insult to injury, they want 20p to give you a print out how to get to it !
They have wi fi at £2 a day which is good considering some charge more than that for 1 hour. If you need a phone or internet signal, o2 and vodafone work ok, we have a 3 mobile dongle for internet use and it worked perfectly ON HSDPA
This was our first visit to this site, We arrived late on a windy Monday night it was 2100 hours the warden was very pleasant he directed us to the service pitch and once filled up with water directed us to our pitch.
We managed to get TV working and enjoyed a very welcome nights sleep.
The following morning we set up the on site WIFI which worked brilliantly and appears good value for money.
We walked into Haltwhistle and was amazed at the selection of shops in the town. Some campers have comented on the Sainsburys being small but we found it had most things needed.
There are some really nice walks from the site and the maps in the office are availabe to take away and look at at leisure.
There are some nice pubs in town and the Wallace arms is a nice walk away down the old railway track.
The facilities are clean and well kept always clean and the showers lovely and hot
This is a really lovely little site in a rural setting right next to a river on the edge of woods.
The welcome we received on arriving was friendly and the wardens always said hello on passing. We were initially directed to a pitch which appeared boggy. This can be a problem in certain parts of the site. However, when we questioned if there was any where else we could pitch, we were shown a space actually between two recovering pitches. It turned out to probably be the driest pitch of the site apart from the hard standings, for which we were very grateful considering the downpours we had for some of the time we were there!
The toilet/shower block was kept spotlessly clean and considering the muddy ground, was not easy. There were also lovely little touches, like flowers around the block in the ladies. There are two showers and the water was always very hot.
There is a small shop in reception selling basics and for more provisions there is a co-op and a Sainsburys in Haltwhistle town which is about 2 1/2 miles away and can be reached a couple of ways. One of which is through the woods, where we spotted two deer running across the path in front of us!
If you enjoy walking there are loads of walks around the site. Apart from Hadrian's Wall and the Roman museums there is not much else in the nearby vicinity of the site, but if you want to travel further afield, because the site is central between Carlisle and Newcastle, there is more than enough to keep you occupied in either direction. You are also very close to the Scottish border so a trip north is another option.
I would say this is a site for singles/couples without children primarily, unless you have children who are easily pleased, or enjoy walking. There were children on site when we were there, who seemed happy enough, but there is no playground, so if you require these things then I would say this site is probably not for you as there are no ball games allowed.
