I stayed on this site last week of June this year. What a delight.
Excellent points:-
The owners could not be more helpful. I asked for the remotest of sites because of my dogs and was given exactly that. They run an electric extension out for me too. The site is nice and level and well secluded and has adjoining foot paths that take you from a 2 mile loop out to the Pennine way. This site has everything for the nature lover, babbling brook, badgers, birds, wildlife. The shower block is basic and warm with free hot showers. There is also a wash up area here too. All nice and clean and tidy. The site is well mown and the grass cuttings removed so you don't trample the cuttings into the caravan. I paid for 1 adult and electric which was very reasonable considering I had an awning and enclosure for the dogs too. A short drive takes you to the nearest supermarket and Carlisle is only 9 miles distant with everything you need. The recycling on site is impressive and green issues are encouraged. The annex to the farmhouse holds lots of literature on the surrounding area and washing machine facilities and toilets. A plan on the window tells you your pitch when you arrive.
Could be better points:
The shower block is located in the first field. This field is solely for permanent caravans, not statics though. The elsan disposal point is behind the main farm buildings and is some distance carrying the cassette, I put mine in the back of the car and drove it up there. The toilet facilities if you need them are in the annex of the main farm house the other side of the road. I used my caravan for those facilities. The entrance into the field is a bit tight if you have never been before you have to swing out very wide to get in off the road.
All in all I really enjoyed this site. I was on my own (54 woman and 3 dogs) but felt very safe and knew if I had a problem Jenny or David would certainly help. This is the type of remote un spoilt site I love. If your looking for up to the minute facilities, lots of activities, things for children to do, this may not be the site for you, but for those of us who love nature and peace and quiet. Its a BIG YES
The site is split into 2 parts, the first field is full of seasonal vans permanently sited, the second one for tourers and tents with 8 10A hook ups. For 6 nights we were the only people on site, which was fortunate in a way.
There are only 2 showers on site both in the same building, which also has a sink for washing up, and for other hygiene uses eg shaving or just washing which means that there is not much privacy. There are 2 toilets within the main building, with another sink and a washing machine which costs £2, quite reasonable.
The site has good recycling facilities within the barn. The site is not really suitable for children as there are no facilities for them. There is a good range of literature about the surrounding area.
The nearest pub is at Morland a 2 minute drive or 10 minutes walk across the fields, also at Morland is a cafe with a small shop.
The owner could not been more helpful lending me a mast for my aerial. All in all a good quiet relaxing site, although a bit remote.
This is our second visit to this peaceful site on a very quite country lane, with lots of great walks around. The facilities are basic but always clean and the showers are hot and powerful.
Arrived late Fri evening and was going to picth our awning Sat afternoon, but arrived back from Penrith market on Sat to find a caravan pitched so close there wasn't room, so could do with some pitch markers.
There is a great pub about 4 miles away called The Eden Vale Inn at Bolton, good food at a good price. Abbott Lodge Jersey ice cream at Clifton is also well worth a visit.
When we arrived we were greeted by some lovely people. We were pitched next to the showers which was handy! The showers were clean and plenty of hot water, only down size was that they were pretty small and dark. The toilets were in the main house which was across a road. Both our children had to be accompanied as some of the cars did speed past the site entrance. Apart from these issues, we enjoyed our time at the site. There was a lovely walk near the river which our dog loved and we travelled to a nearby ford which was great for a paddle as it was a lovely hot day! We will be visiting this site again.
Had a fantastic few days here, very quiet site. The site is very dog friendly,we had some very nice walks. Owners are very helpful and keep everything very clean. Would say it's more of an adult site as not much for children to do. Not to far to do some shopping in Shap would recommend the butchers there. Will be going back again to try the pub in the village
Nestling in the beautiful Eskdale Valley close to Scafell, England's highest mountain and Wastwater, this site is a children's paradise in the heart of the Lake District. The first thing that meets you on arrival is the pond, fed by a stream and usually full of children paddling and playing on tyre rafts. The playground has zip wires, climbing frames, tyre rope-swings and adventure courses.
Grass pitches (some with EHU) for tents, motorhomes, VW-sized campervans (no caravans). Refurbished toilets, showers and laundry. Peace is the watchword on the campsite - catering mainly for families and couples with silence after 10.30pm. Don't forget your marshmallows - campfires are allowed in selected areas. Nearby shop and pub. And there's an added extra: the site sits along the route of the Ravenglass and Eskdale Steam Railway line, with it's own station. Choo Choo! Find out more here
This was our first time camping and we were made welcome and helped in every way by the owners. The facilities were basic but immaculate, great scenery, very child friendly, all you could need is close by. Good rates and good size pitch. Will definitely return and a big thanks to David and Jenny for making our first time out the start of our new found love of camping
We managed to get a last minute booking (lucky for us someone had cancelled) for the Easter weekend. £11 per night for 2 adults with EHU - no price hikes for a bank holiday,
This is a gem of a site, small, friendly and basic. Close to open fields which the dogs loved. A nice walk to the pub which has a beer garden and bench by the stream. The Local Co-op is close by in Shap and there is a local butcher there too, more local farm shops are dotted around as you would expect in a rural area. Amenities were spotless, owners really friendly, and even offered an extension for the hook up if our was too short. You can order milk and eggs for delivery by the milkman.
This site is ideal for adults and small children - the teenagers in the next pitch were bored with no on-site games facilities so we had dog walkers when we first arrived, which must have been a good distraction for them.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will be back again.
Helpful people, great area, right in the countryside
Good facilities inc washing machine. Shower good and everything very clean. There's a village nearby with a pub and Penrith is only 20min away with all the shops you need. Its about 15min from the M6. There are many things to do and see in the area.
Only one problem - my portable radio wouldn't pick up most stations
We stayed at this site in 2006 and after a disastrous start to our camping holiday it improved greatly once we got here, it is small and facilities were basic but clean and well kept, situated in beautiful countryside, peaceful and quiet, no playground or anything for children but beautiful walks, we were without transport which made things a bit difficult but owners were helpful even arranged lift on 1st day to nearby town and from then on we were able to book a taxi (very expensive but no fault of the site) site was very reasonably priced and we really enjoyed it must go back maybe next year
Just completed a 3 night weekend stay at this site. This is a site you will either love or loath, depending on what you look for - For us it was loved and we will definitely be going back.
If you like lively don't even consider this site. This is a small site, basic in amenities (no club, bar or shop, and basic showers in a farm outbuilding) and the setting is the ultimate in peace and tranquillity. The showers have a really rustic feel to them, you can see all the roof, but they are kept spotlessly clean and have constant hot water no matter what time you go, being Calor powered. The pitches are all flat and each one is sheltered by shrubs making them all private - just like your own little private gardens. The 6m rule is also enforced because of these divides. Electric hook up is available if required for £2 per night.
The nearest pub is in a little village called Morland and is a 1 mile walk through the fields, following the brook that runs by the side of the site. If you plan to eat there make sure you book in advance or you could be disappointed at not getting a table - as we were! David and Jenny couldn't make you any more welcome and we will certainly be visiting again.
