We stayed here as a family with young children (three, eldest 6)and found this to be one of the nicest sites we have stayed at for a while. It was really pleasant with it's unregimented pitching policy and big open spaces for playing in the middle of the fields. The fields are largely flat and the grass clipped very short which made pitching easy. The toilet and shower blocks are lovely, big, and clean - even hand soap and a hairdryer provided free which most do not - the showers are powerful, though the temperature varied from day to day. (This may have been noted and fixed - there was some tinkering by workmen while we were there). The children loved watching the alpacas in the adjoining field, and three new babies were born while we were there which was amazing, a real highlight of our trip was watching their first attempts to stand. The owners were helpful and accommodating, the shop is well stocked, the free wifi and phone charging for a donation was gratefully used. The only small niggles were 1) the inadequately sized freezer for ice-packs; there just wasn't enough space, and my ice-packs either didn't fit, or were removed, or the door was left open due to over-filling. Finally they went missing completely, a bigger freezer would solve this issue. 2) My husband was bothered by the road noise a bit but I didn't notice at all! I quite enjoyed the tank's night exercises!
These are minor things and we would definitely return if we were coming back to the area. Thanks for a great stay.
Just home from a wonderful two week stay at Longthorns with our folding camper, two kids (7 and 10), hubby and dog. It is very easy to find and tow to, being right next door to Monkey World. Having stayed three years ago, it was great to see the new shower block fully operational and providing a huge improvement to the facilities. There are now 5 showers each for the boys and girls and a family/disabled facility which includes a raised baby bath, decent shower, etc. As with many other sites, water pressure/temperature can drop a little at very busy times, but the block is kept scrupulously clean, being monitored very closely by the staff.
Sally and Mark have worked really hard to make this a perfect little site, and are frequently seen checking facilities and talking to campers. New developments also include the renovation of an old milking parlour into a small on site bar providing a barrel of beer from a local brewery and good cider on tap. This is open on Friday and Saturday evenings, with a communal fire outside and good quality live music. A fab opportunity to chat to other campers (all very friendly during our stay), share the marshmallows and generally enjoy the outside. It's all very low key and informal, and we loved it. The alpacas on site can be walked by the campers under close supervision from the team. We were lucky enough to see a baby alpaca being born during our stay. As well as the 'Honesty trolley' which has been on site for a while, there is now a separate Reception area and small shop which has very good local ice cream, fresh meat, bread and other useful items. The farm provides a fridge for campers in one of the fields and a mobile phone charging service.
Within the area there is a very good bakery and Spar in Wool village. Wareham has a small Sainsburys, excellent butcher and bakery. We felt the chippy in Wool was expensive and unfortunately not of the quality we are used to. The Castle Inn in West Lulworth provides excellent pub grub (check out the Mexican Chip Butty!) and is family and dog friendly. They have a good selection of proper beer and over 50 ciders and perries available. The Weld Arms in East Lulworth is also excellent, with superb beer and slightly more upmarket food (wonderful crab linguine and gnocchi). Brody's Cafe in Lulworth Cove provides very good seafood if you are eating during the day.
Lulworth Cove is an easy 10-15 min drive away. Get a weekly parking ticket for £18 makes sense if you're planning several visits, as it's £7. 50 for a full day's parking otherwise. Very good ice cream is easy to find. We visited Dorchester (Dinosaur Museum is ok for a wet hour and a half or so), The Tank Museum (ticket lasts a whole year) and Lulworth Cove many times for sea swimming, fossil hunting, etc).
We are already planning our next stay - a gem of a site.
This is a lovely campsite which, even in the main holiday season, did not feel overcrowded. The facilities are excellent-clean showers and lots of loo paper! The shop is well stocked and there is now a small bar area. The welcome warm and friendly. We would recommend an evening walk up to Durdle Door, a visit to the Tank Museum and a stroll through the fields to Monkey World. We are already planning our return next summer.
My family and I love camping and recent years we have been disappointed with many of the campsites set up. But at last we have found the campsite that ticks all our boxes. I didn't want to write a review at first in worry it would be fully booked all the time. But I believe that Sally and Mark have created fabulous atmosphere and if you really love camping like the old days with a good pinch of modern life, then this is the best place to camp. Thank you Sally and Mark for a lovely relaxing weekend.
Just returned from a great stay at Longthorns Farm.
Great choice of pitches. New toilet and shower block is EXCELLENT and clean. Shop has everything you need plus there is an honesty shop/cart for out if hours emergencies! The Parlour is a combination of fire pit gathering/ pub and music venue. There was great singer with guitar there when we were visiting.
The tanks can be a bit noisy but didn't disturb us. The Alpaca walks were a great hit and Emma very kindly let our kids take them for a walk whilst we waited for car rescue after a flat battery incident!
Set in 15 acres of breathtaking countryside, right next door to the Jurassic Coast in Dorset, this site offers stunning views of the Chesil Bank, Fleet Lagoon, and Lyme Bay. Welcoming tents, motorhomes and caravans, this family friendly site offers spacious grass pitches with or without electric. For kids there's an outdoor heated swimming pool, 3 acre playing area including slides, swings and more.
Facilities include toilets, showers, washing up, launderette, and WifI. There is an onsite shop and off-licence. The Bar in the Barn at the site serves a delicious food and offers a variety of entertainment, including live music. As well as the attractions of Weymouth's beach and harbour, this is a great base to explore family attractions throughout South and West Dorset. Find out more here
Spent 3 nights here, over a weekend & although it got a little busy it still didn't feel packed. The far end field was quite full of tents & there are some lodges in that field too. Nice site although some area's are sloped so wheel chocks will be need. Toilet/shower block looks to be quite newish, whilst it was clean & checked regularly it does have a 'farm building' feel to it. This didn't bother us & was actually kind of in keeping with the place as it is a working alpaca farm. Some area's of the farm are off limits to vistor's so those with children will need to keep an eye on them for this reason although these area's are gated off. Washing up area is just outside the toilet block with 4 sinks & plenty of hot water. The whole block is situated just behind the main reception.
We were allowed to pitch wherever we wanted so found a nice level part at the edge of the field, unfortunatley we were closer to the road so could hear the tanks at Bovington Camp running up & down the road for the first night, oh well our fault, tank movement only happened during the day for the rest of our stay. Just be aware that this is an active camp so tanks will be on the move sometimes, & yes they are loud. The site has no control over this.
Great for visiting monkey world as we did, there is a path through a gate at the end of the site which takes you straight into monkey world's car park field.
The field we were in has very limited EHU's (we didn't use one), most EHU's are situated in the first field. (this is the one with the gateway to monkey world)
The camp had extremely loud live entertainment on both Friday and Saturday nights which was not mentioned on website. As a family we research quiet camps with night time quiet rules which this one had listed. We like to walk and swim and sight see all day and go to bed when the sun goes down. We were very disappointed. The owner was never available to chat to about this and when we emailed her she asked us to find her the next day but she made herself scarce every time we asked to see her.
The camp also had very poor pressure in the showers. One has to lean your head on the wall beneath the shower to enable the trickle of water to rinse your hair or body of soap suds.
Very good camp site on a working farm. Small shop and an honesty shop. Free fridge/freezer and WiFi. Really nice staff. New and clean toilet/shower block. Electrical hook up if needed. Plenty of space: we weren’t camped on top of each other. It’s by Bovington, so expect the occasional noisy tank at all hours. Bit short of hot water for washing up. You can walk the Alpacas, watch the gliders take off from the small airfield or feed the cows. Convenient for the Tank museum and Monkey World. Great for kids.
We have just returned from a lovely Bank Holiday break at Longthorns Farm. The owner is really welcoming and accommodating. The campsite is well placed and easy to find near Monkey World (you can walk to Monkey World from the site). It's well situated for many local attractions - Corfe, Wareham, Swanage, Weymouth are all easy to get to.
The pitches though numbered were unmarked, and in the field next to the toilet block were mainly flat - there is a gentle slope to the field. The pitches were well spaced and our massive tunnel tent easily fit onto ours.
We had no problems with noise from other campers/road/tanks etc. But I'm guessing it's the time of year.
There is a lovely woodland walk, great for a short stroll for the dogs which are welcomed on leads on site. There is no playpark for the children but the owner explained that tents generally pitch around the edges so the middle area of the field is left for the kids to play in - which worked really well. Plus the novelty of the alpacas kept them entertained!
The showers and toilet block were really good, and cleaned at least twice daily. The showers did tend to lose a little pressure when very busy which is to be expected, but they were lovely and hot, you do need something to hang your dry stuff on as there is no bench, just hooks on the doors.
We didn't use the fridges etc. But were a nice (free) touch. W
We are looking forward to going back again next year.
We had high expectations based upon previous reviews and were not disappointed.
We had a warm welcome from Sally who pointed us towards the nicest spots on site for pitching, the whole site was open despite it only being mid-April. The location is stunning, with quiet woodland behind the site which makes for a great early morning walk but it was the friendly animals on the farm that really made our stay.
The new bathrooms are really very good, do not worry about some of the older reviews on here. For bonus points, a stool or bench in the showers would be good as anything left on the floor gets sprayed.
There is nothing within walking distance of the site except Monkeyworld (which was the reason for our visit) but Wool is only a couple of miles away and the honesty shop on site caters for forgotten bits and pieces. The fridge/freezer are a really handy addition too.
There were no tank exercises whilst we were there but there was extensive gunfire for most of the first day but it really didn't detract from our stay.

Spent four nights here, have stayed before and enjoyed my stay but this time was quiet. Disappointed it has now been put down to 6 amp electric and I have everything electric in my van so was unable to use many of my items or not have any heating going or it would trip. I have a low wattage kettle etc but still was blowing all the time. I phoned and spoke to owner she said oh it does state on web site. Also the new shower block was a nice building but you have to shower with your Hands on the shower all the time to make the water come through
We booked last minute as a group of 3 adults and 7 kids staying in a 6 berth tent. We live quite local and none of the kids had been camping before, so this site was ideal. We found the campsite very easily and were told where we could pitch. We were in the middle field next to the alpacas. We could pitch anywhere in there. The field sloped slightly but we made sure we slept the right way it was ok. The toilets were not too far away in a portacabin as the new ones are being built. We were right next to the water and washing up so that was a bonus. People were very friendly and helped us out when asked. The honesty shop was great and there is a chip shop 5 minutes drive away. We are definitely going again next year at the start of the season as we've only had a 2 night taster.
The owners and staff are lovely, the alpacas are gorgeous but. Only two female showers for a campsite that size is not sufficient and they were filthy. I know that a new toilet block is being built but that didn't help us! My other complaint is not something that the owners can do anything about but just to let others know, we found it very noisy, it's near a busy road and an army camp, so expect the sound of cars, helicopters, tanks and guns - not really conducive to a peaceful, relaxing trip. The only other thing is if anything, they're too child friendly (I say this as a mother!). There were families there who made no attempt to control their children and allowed them to run around going into other people's pitches and constantly shouting from 6. 30am until they eventually fell into bed. Not the owners fault but again, not conducive to a relaxing break.
Type of unit was a Folding Camper not a Trailer Tent but FC's aren't in the drop down menu.
We found this site with ease and soon found our pitch with 6amp EHU, although there could be more information about going around to the farm if know one is around, luckily however we did meet someone who pointed out our pitch, right next to the honesty shop and tap and backing onto the horses field.
This site is ideally situated for the short walk through the field to Monkey World just five minutes walk away, although we didn't really find it all that interesting as most of them were hiding.
What we found more interesting was our visit to Lulwoth Cove about 5 miles away with fantastic views of the Jurassic coast and the Cove itself, and Studland Heath about 15 miles away.
It is very difficult to comment on the toilet facilities when they are having new ones built. The cubicles in the temporary toilets I found to be very small and struggled to get in and out (I am a big chap) but the main thing is they were kept clean and had hot water at all times.
The walk to the toilets passed the Alpacas which was nice to see them on our walks to the loo. It wasn't too far to walk but I have had sites that have had closer toilet facilities.
The piece and tranquillity every so often was spoiled by the sound of tanks rumbling up the road outside but this sort of thing added to the quirkiness of the site.
I'll definitely be returning to this site and hopefully the new toilet and shower block will be built by then.
We've just returned from a lovely weekend at Longthorns Farm.
In an age when camping is becoming more and more commercial, it's lovely that these owners have retained the ideal of good old fashioned camping and not just trying to rake in money wherever possible.
I can't add much to what the other reviews have said. We didn't use the facilities so I can't update on those, but it was a very nice site situated in gorgeous Dorset. We'll definitely stay there again.
