We arranged a hen do for our sister and chose Longthorns farm's 4 tipis as the venue for a glamping weekend.
The tents were a good size and there was sufficient space and could easily sleep 4-5 people per tent. The beds were comfortable and Sally the owner was than helpful when helping us arrange the tents in the weeks leading up to the weekend.
The basic facilities (seating, campfire, kitchen facilities etc) were just what we needed. Whilst it wasn't quite glamping with the toilet facilities, it was absolutely fine. We understand that a new shower block is being planned and I think that would really make it an even better camping venue, particularly for large parties of people, some of who are not used to the camping experience!
The owners went out of their way to help us have the best weekend we could. They were fantastic. They provided extra bedding when it was required. They put up a wind breaker by the fire to improve the comfort (we were lucky it didn't rain but there was a strong wind when we were there). They started the fire for us in the morning so that we could make tea and toast for the group.
There are a number of things to do in the area if you are looking to organise a similar hen do. There's wine tasting near by - we chose to go to Poole Quay and go on a Sunseeker for half a day and went out to Ashley Cross in the evening. We also went Windsurfing and there are a whole variety of water sports in the area to get involved in.
I would recommend this venue to others. The location for activities is convenient. The camping was fun, comfortable and low cost which allowed us to have more money for other activities.
A very nice site, I was a little worried about traffic noise, but we didn't hear any from out pitch.
Great site for children, we visited half term week, and there were lots of children, who all seemed quite happy to play together. If your after a quiet site, don't come in school holidays!
Sally and Mark were very helpful, we had problems with electric, which was sorted out as quickly as possible (This was due to someone else tripping it, not the site, although the amount of rain we had may have been a factor!)
Lovely walk to take the dogs on around the site, I even saw a deer one evening!
I didn't use the showers, although my family did, and the verdict was very small and sometimes not very hot, and not much power. I think this is the only negative thing about the site.
The honesty shop was very good, and nice to see.
The site is nicely spread out, and Sally was quite laidback about where you pitched, no rules about which direction to face etc etc, which was great. The main field with the EHU, everyone pitched around the edge leaving a nice football pitch/frisbee area/cricket pitch which was used by the kids.
First time at this camp site during the June Jubilee bank holiday. First impression was very favourable, the site looked well kept, grass was cut short and the pitches marked out. I had to wait to be shown to a pitch by the owner, a friendly lady who gave me a recycling bag for paper, cans and cardboard. I thought this was an excellent idea and the first time I had ever come across it at all the other camp sites I have visited.
Although the camp site was fully booked I was pleased that they didn't cram too many units in and sufficient space was left for the usual camping games that people enjoy, kite flying, cricket etc. We played a very lively game of cricket ourselves and was delighted that other campers wanted to join the game.
With no on site facilities such as children's playground, clubhouse or video games everybody amuses themselves as best they can several children (and adults I suspect) made dens in the woods with fallen branches, and enjoyed games such as hide and seek and playing at soldiers also in the woods, the woodland walk is very much a feature at this site and being an avid birdwatcher is one that I particularly enjoyed.
I must also mention the beautiful farm animals which everybody enjoyed visiting, there were two friendly ponies who were always ready to be petted and also a couple of groups of alpacas recently shorn and looking very cute especially the youngsters Charlie and Coco.
Monkey World is right next door and worth a visit. Lulworth Cove and all the attractions at Weymouth are also within a half hours drive. The downside to this campsite were the loos, although they were kept as clean as possible and every effort had been made to make them look nice, pictures on the walls and dried flower arrangements, it didn't disguise the fact that they smelled dreadful most of the time.
The hot water in the showers was a bit hit and miss I think, although I was lucky and had an early shower and being the only one using them at the time had sufficient pressure to enjoy a good hot shower. I understand though from comments made by other campers that the pressure dropped off if more than one cubicle was in use at any one time.
There were also sufficient water standpipes throughout the site so nobody had to travel too far to obtain water. Likewise there were extra sinks for washing up but no running hot water for these, not too much of a problem as we heated kettles of water for this. All in all a nice tidy site which receives a thumbs up from me and my party of 6.
We have had the pleasure of spending Easter at this lovely relaxed site in our tourer with electric hookup. The pitches are around the edge of the fields leaving a lovely big area for the children to play where you can see them. The toilet & shower blocks are basic & un heated (although the showers themselves are hot!), & there are only 2 for women & 2 for men so maybe not enough in height of season. It is a working farm with lovely owners & has a very relaxed feel to the whole place. The 'honesty shop' is a great idea, & there is the opportunity to hire fire pits. A fab mobile pizza van visited the site. The site is right next door to Monkey World & within a short drive of nice pubs & beautiful countryside. There are a few tanks going past which were noisy but interesting & didn't bother us. I would definitely revisit this site.
What a lovely site this is, everyone was really friendly including the animals and especially Twiglet and Precious the beautiful mum and baby horses that stayed right behind our tent most of the day and night! I was so sad to leave as it really was a gem of a site!
Anyway back to the review, it was virtually empty as we stayed the 1st week in April before the easter break, so Sally(also lovely) let us pick our pitch as we were having EHU. The pitches were really spacious and Sally marked them out during our stay they looked a fair size(we have a XL tent and wouldn't have had a problem pitching should it have been really busy). The toilets were lovely, clean and well kept. The showers were hot GREAT! the only thing I could say which is being really picky is that the ladies shower block itself could do with a door as it lets the heat out (it was really cold in the mornings on our visit, wouldn't think it would be a problem in the summer though) but this doesn't really matter so much as again inside they were clean and well kept! there is nothing bad I can say about this site I absolutely loved it and will be returning to see how Precious and Twiglet are getting on(I became rather attached to them).
The location of the site was great right next door to Monkey world which my two little ones loved(age 3 and 2) they also loved the woodland walk which started at the top of our field(next to the access gate to Monkey world) Neither we or our toddlers were bothered by the road noise didn't really notice it or any other noise actually as it was very quite in the evening and everyone including the animals were quiet around 8pm and pretty much silent by 10PM although the morning songs from the birds did start very early in the morning but that just added charm to the camping experience and I loved it! There was a gliders club at the other end of the fields which was good to watch them and the army tank training facilities/museum were close by, you could hear them on the odd occasion chugging and firing which was very exciting for my little boy and my little girl loved shouting bombs away KABOOM!

After reading the reviews regarding the toilets we were a little apprehensive, however, they were perfectly fine and we've certainly used worse! We used the portable cabin toilets and although the brown carpet perhaps isn't the best floor covering, it was clean, tidy and we didn't notice any pongs!
The walk on the site is great for stretching the dogs legs and it's nice that it's direct from the site and away from the road. As requested we kept the dogs on the lead and we were pleased we did, as we had a herd or deer run across the path.
It was interesting in the morning when we were tucking in to our bacon sarnies to hear the calls of the monkeys from Monkey World.
A downside of the site is the noise from the main road; there was a bit of noise in the afternoon when we were sitting out. However, when inside the camper, it was fine and didn't disturb us.
The site was well priced at £8. 50 for the night we stopped.
Glad we found this fab little camping site. It's what camping and caravanning is all about. The simple pleasure of camping. No club or pool just a simple site with basic facilities.
Love the honesty shop-it's like stepping back to the 50's or 60's when everyone could be trusted. Glad the owners Mark and Sally have this ethos. It was always well stocked with exception to matches which we ran out of but I can understand why they can't sell them since kids have access to the shop. Having the fridge and freezer was a great idea since it saved having to shop every day.
The trailor chemical flush loos were as previously described a bit pongy but were clean and far better than festival portaloos. We never had the pleasure of using the composting one's but have every faith in the environmental option.
My only gripe would be the saloon style louvre doors to the showers with a large gap between. I had to drape a large jumper over them for fear of someone peering through the gap. They weren't lockable either but the showers were always lovely, warm and clean.
The woodland walk is lovely and we spotted deer on several occasions together with other wildlife. The alpacas, horses and sheep were all very friendly and welcomed being fussed. Great for the kids.
The tank noises, occasional helicopters and gun fire were very obvious but being in a caravan we were not disturbed, it actually made an unusual stay and certainly never put us off returning.
We would return again to the site for several reasons:

They have got this site just great and they also had tippees and shephard huts to hire which looked great and fun.
Lovely area and fantastic friendly site. 3 fields- we stayed in 2nd field. Lots of room. Some noise from tanks but added to novelty of site. We loved the open fire fire pits and had many evenings sat around toasting marsh mallows. The toilets were basic ( composting one is- interesting!) but showers good. Honesty shop is great idea as are the fridges and freezers on site ( if anyone goes there are frozen burgers we left there!). Local area is great- we ate at the Seven Sisters in Wool- a tad pricy but food and ale worth it. Local shop and excellent butchers in Wool.
Owners very pleasant and relaxed- had to hunt for them to pay as we left.
Would recommend to friends and family. Will be even better when new toilets finished.
This was my first camping holiday with my young family (kids aged 7 and 10) and we enjoyed every minute despite some wet weather. The site is located in a very picturesque farm with a number of good sized camping fields including one with EHU.
Along with everyone else we pitched along the edge of the field which provided a big open space in the middle for kids (and adults) to play in.
This was proper camping as I remembered it from childhood - open fires (fire pits for hire at reasonable cost), working farm, farm animals including alpacas, horses etc, woodland walks, and basic but perfectly adequate facilities.
The owners are busy running the site and the haylage farm but very friendly and helpful and it's clear that they have put lot of thought and hard work into making this site deliver an authentic, relaxed camping experience.
The loos / showers are fine - as described in the previous reviews really (i. E. Not the lap of luxury, toilets can smell a bit like toilets, but adequate so it really depends on how important this sort of thing is to you when you are camping), and I understand the toilets will be upgraded in the not too distant future.
Lots of attractions nearby - only a few miles from great beaches at Studland or Lulworth, near the fossil collecting beaches at Kimmeridge, and a stone's throw away from Monkey World and the Tank Museum, both of which are excellent.
The overall atmosphere is laid back, not uptight at all, and the occasional sounds of Monkey World and tanks on manoeuvre, along with gliders landing in field nearby adds charm.
We were pleased to arrive on the site after a 4 day stay at Camp Bestival nearby at Lulworth Castle - so the showers were very welcome!
The farm and animals were lovely, the campsite was very well kept - fire pits are a lovely touch and the Honesty Box is a brilliant idea. The use of the Fridge and Freezer is also very handy.
The only negative point to mention were the toilets - they were chemical toilets which were quite smelly, the small bins in the ladies weren't emptied on a daily basis and the dark brown carpet is a bad idea - my recommendation would be to put windows in for ventilation and lift the carpets - I'm sure this would help.

Had a great time at Longthorns farm, it is a lovely site and the owners are great too.
We stayed in the first field with Electric hook-up, the field is well planned out and pretty flat. The honesty shop was great and the BBQ/Firepit hire is a good idea too, only thing is the local 'Dorset charcoal' didn't seem to give off much heat and was hard to get going (i ended up frying our tea in the end)!.
The only thing I would moan about is the toilet/shower block, it is really quite grim and my partner dreaded going for a shower and I dreaded going to the toilet for a No. 2 as it was full of flies, smelled and the floor looked filthy.
Obviously Mark and sally have a full working farm to look after so I suppose as long as it is functioning ok then it will do but if they did invest in decent facilities then this camp site would easily be one of the best I have stayed at.
Overall I would definitely recommend this site but prepare for the bad toilets/showers
We chose this campsite as it accepted groups and was recommended to me by a friend.
The location is ideal, great for exploring the Purbecks. We visited Lulworth Cove for the day while we were there.
The campsite has everything you could ask for, the honesty shop, the baby alpacas and the foal being highlights! They had a good recycling system, giving us green bags to put all our recycling in when we arrived.
We ordered a firepit which definitely worth the extra money, provided hours of amusement for the men-folk!
The facilities are fine, the toilets smelled a bit (as they were chemical) but were clean and the showers hot (and free). We all thought the price was very reasonable.
We liked the laid-back attitude of the staff, we could choose where to pitch our tents and were not even asked to pay, we had to go and find someone when we were leaving!
There was a bit of noise from the road but didn't disturb us at night.
We want to return here and will be recommending this campsite to friends and family.
We stayed here for 9 nights in August and had a good time.
Its a fairly new site and is still being improved.
Its ideally situated for exploring the Purbeck area of Dorset and the main roads aren't far away.
Dorchester isn't far way and has some great museums etc.
The site is next to Monkeyworld and you can hear the monkeys on a morning!
The proprietors are friendly and very laid back. There is a real feeling of trust here, and they don't hassle you for payment. In the end I went to see Mark the farmer and paid him.
This extends to the Honesty shop where you put your money in the tin and take your goods. They keep it well stocked and our children enjoyed feeling important by helping themselves and paying for their own stuff.
There is a campers fridge and freezer too which is VERY useful.
They were one of the few sites we rang up who were able to do us a deal since we had two cars and three tents between us and because they were flexible, we stayed there.
The site is reasonably level and quite large, and is very attractive.
The children liked the animals and exploring the site. There was room for us to set up games like cricket without annoying anyone else.
You can also have campfires but these need to be hired for a reasonable sum so make sure you do this at booking.
If you do, this includes a bag of logs, charcoal and kindling to get you going, plus further supplies can be had at the honesty shop.
There is a woodland walk and further up the field are Teepee's and old fashioned style gypsy caravans you can hire.
Not so great are the toilets and showers, although the owners are planning to upgrade soon when they get planning permission through.
At the moment, there is a single flush toilet for the men and a couple for ladies, which are chemical types.
They did pong a bit and are a long way from some parts of the site.
There are also compost type ones around the site which also pong a bit but are handy if you don't fancy a long walk.
The showers are acceptable but a bit too small and could do with more privacy and a bench on which to put your stuff and maybe a couple more hooks. They were often cold, or hot and then cold, which did wake you up.
We got to the point by the end of our stay where we couldn't be bothered to use them.
I have seen worse, at other sites though, to be fair.
If Mark and Sally's plans to upgrade them happen then this will be academic anyway.
I wish them every success with it, and we hope to be back one day.
A lovely friendly campsite right next to Monkey World. The owners (Sallie and Mark)were very pleasant and accommodating. The Honesty box and fridge/freezer was a fantastic idea.
The showers/toilet facilities probably need updating but were kept very clean and the water was hot AND no queues for them. The site was well maintained and very clean. There was loads of space for children to play and very safe too.
Tents and motor-homes are only allowed to pitch around the edge of the fields. The alpacas, sheep and horse and foal were lovely too, providing a little entertainment.
The tanks driving up and down the rods at night; one night 2 helicopters landing in the field next to the site; were quite noisy. I wasn't keen on the noise but others, especially those with children to amuse, liked watching the tanks on their manoeuvres.
There is plenty of places to go around the area, eg Lulworth, Durdle Door, Swanage on the steam train, Poole and Weymouth, not forgetting Monkey World and The Tank Museum. Oh and Sallie never did ask for payment, we found her just as we were packed up ready to leave.
A lovely site with some great facilities. Honesty shop is great for essentials, fire pits/barbie with logs and charcoal all ready for you is great.
The grass was nice and short and well drained. Friendly owners. The showers were clean and hot but not very practical as there is no where for your clothes and not very private, but we managed.
My only real gripe was the loos! the loo itself looked clean but to my horror had office type carpet down, so couldn't really be mopped, and therefore were very smelly.
May be a coincidence but we came home with a sick bug, so make double sure kids wash their hands after using them.
