My family and I recently spent a very enjoyable weekend camping at Fish Ponds Bottom.
It is situated in a beautiful part of the New Forest. The field is a haven for wildlife and our children had a great time spotting lizards with the camp site owner! This is an eco friendly campsite and all campers need to respect that. Like other reviewers I wanted to keep this place a secret but I feel I have to leave a review having read another from a camper who stayed on the same weekend as us.
The compost loo on the site is great - I was not aware of any 'ripe' smell about it. It was clean at all times and was in fact far more pleasant to use than many conventional public toilets I have encountered.
Our children thought the 'quirky' shower was fun and I myself had a very pleasant outdoor shower. It is warm, clean and very user friendly.
The owners could not be more helpful and leave all responsible campers to enjoy their weekend in peace. We did notice one camper pulling wood out of the hedgerow for his camp fire. He was gently asked not to do so and pointed in the direction of suitable wood for his fire!
My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights, we a lovely peaceful time.
This is a very unique site, the owners have created a lovely friendly and natural place to stay and added their own unique touch!
The site is basic but beautiful, with all the necessities covered, compost loos, a hot shower, and a washing up area all made from reclaimed materials.
There were solar fairy lights giving the place a bit of night time magic, and cut flowers in vases, long grasses left for wildlife, a woodland area and an inexhaustible dog who is more than willing to spend the day with you, (as long as you keep throwing sticks!)
Fires are also possible if raised off the ground, try to grab the old beer barrel, amazing for cooking on!
It's a nice peaceful location, good walks around, a shop and a pub a couple of miles away and no throngs of tourists passing through.
I agree with the previous reviews that what makes this place truly special is the warmth and hospitality of the owners. When we left it felt like we were leaving friends. We'll definitely return!
We've just spent 2 nights at this campsite and in general I was very happy there, however there were a few issues for me personally.
The owners told us that it was the first time they've had more than just a couple of campers on site with there being at least 8 or 10 families over the 2 days we were there. Spatially this was not a problem and we were very happy to have the spot we set up camp. The kids absolutely loved it and spent the whole time running around hunting crickets and playing on the swing.
I do feel that the facilities on site are not suitable for the amount of campers. The compost toilet was, to be frank, piled high and quite ripe! The shower simply didn't get used by us with it being a ramshackle, cobbled together from all kinds of bits of wood and picnic umbrellas, affair that I wasn't comfortable using and certainly wouldn't want my children anywhere near.
The owners were very nice and a joy to speak to however I felt we were being watched at all time to make sure we were behaving and did in fact ask us to refrain from doing a couple of things.
I can understand the owners concerns about keeping their potential little haven as peaceful and relaxed as possible but perhaps a few things could be done to save having the problems that we encountered and perhaps make their guests stays a little more relaxed.
Firstly, please make a short set of site rule outlining what can and can't be done to be presented to each camper/group on entering the site. This would make things so much easier and would remove any misunderstandings.
Secondly, If the owners intend on frequently having more that a handful of campers they really need to upgrade the facilities a little.
I won't say I wouldn't return as the site is in a beautiful location and is great for kids but for the price charged either keep it small and secret or make improvements!
My friend and I have just returned from a quick weekends visit to Fish Pond’s Bottom campsite and we had a great time. So much so I’m reluctant to write this review in case it becomes too popular! But, I won’t be selfish and shall share the secret.
The campsite is lovely- It’s not just a plain field but has lots of different areas separated by trees and bushes, lots of nooks and crannies. You can choose to either go in an open grass area or go up into the woods (which we did). When we went there was only one other group but I imagine even if this site was quite busy you would still feel quite secluded because of this. One of the sections is slightly sloped but not enough to be much of a problem and there are plenty of other spots to choose from.
The facilities here are basic. There’s a compost toilet which was very clean when we visited, the “two-scoops of sawdust after it’s been used” rule seems to work very well. There’s running water which comes through a hose in the toilet but there’s a proper tap in the kitchen section just out front if you’d prefer.
There’s a hot shower which neither my friend or I used so we can’t say how it was but the owner gave us a run through of how it works and it seems like a very modern, powerful shower. It’s quite quirky as you have to turn on the gas boiler before you use it but then that’s the best word I’d use to describe the facilities here- Quirky. And we loved it!
Everything felt back-to-basics enough to feel like you were having a proper camping experience but you still had enough to feel comfortable – A clean toilet and running water.
The campsite is in a great location, you just walk left out of the campsite up a little trail between the trees and then you come out into the open New Forest. The campsite was very peaceful; the next door neighbour is a horse in a field!
The owners of the campsite are one of the highpoints. They are a very kind couple who are happy to answer any questions and keen to hear about anyways in which they can improve, but they are also happy to leave you be in the knowledge that you can call them should you need any assistance.
You really get the impression that nothing is too much trouble and they trust you enough to respect the property and others without the need for strict rules.
I would highly recommend this campsite to anyone looking for a peaceful, eco-friendly camping experience. This isn’t for those who want to go “glamping” and have modern facilities but for those wanting to get a bit back-to-basics and enjoy some peace and quiet at a friendly, family-run site, full of character.
My friend and I had a brilliant time here and we will definitely stay here again when we’re back in The New Forest.
