Just right for us. Two mature adults, working in Plymouth on one day. Level pitch for the tent, and plenty of space. Very helpful and friendly wardens on site.
Facilities might not look like the most up to date but provided everything you need. Toilet block OK, shower in one of the blocks a bit feeble and lukewarm but the one in the older block was great. And all free anyway. Great wash-up area with kettle and microwave, freezer and fridge and lots of tourism leaflets.
It felt much like the kind of camping we got in the 1970's when sites were beginning to develop the facilities but hadn't moved into the executive style you get on some sites these days and which, frankly, we don't like. We prefer things fairly basic and consequently we would definitely use this site if in the area again.
My wife and I have stayed at this campsite for the last four or five years and found it to be a very handy but basic campsite, ideal to use as a base to visit the surrounding area.
We have found however that our last couple of visits, the site has deteriorated somewhat. Last year the warden was rude and somewhat temperamental. This year, we were somwhat relieved to find that there was another warden in charge only to be disappointed by the service.
We were not shown to our pitch, they just told us where it was and we just get on with it, so to speak. Previously, the warden would always walk you to the pitch, check it was ok for you, I had seen her help someone to pitch when they were struggling.
Also this year, we noticed a deterioration in the cleanliness of the toilets, usually cleaned twice a day, it would appear they only get the minimum wipe down.
The floors mights be swept and mopped, but the pans are not as fortunate it would appear.
Will we go again next, the jury is still out on that at the moment.
I left this campsite 10 days earlier than I'd initially planned and moved to another site in Plymouth. On the plus side, the owner and wardens were nice and friendly, the site was easy to access, there was a very laid back atmosphere on site, the electric hook up was strong and I got a really good digital signal, so my TV with freeview box worked well there.
It felt very rural whilst still being really close to the City Centre ( Plymouth Theatre Royal 5.5 miles and 12 minutes away by car ) It was well placed for a Post Office and Pub and a really big Morrisons with a petrol station just a couple of miles away and the nightly camping charges were low.
However, this reflected in the facilities which were adequate but basic. There was a washing up area with 2 sinks, 3 showers for ladies and a good long row of ladies toilets, but having visited Club sites on many occasions I am used to cleaner facilities.
The lay out of the site was not as regimented and fire regulated as I am used to and as a result units seemed much closer together than I was expecting. The narrow upper part next to the facilities made it tricky for longer units and the larger area was sloping and uneven.
I would not have moved for the above reasons, and I know people love this site and return every year, however, there was no secure entry system, so anyone could drive in and out, and there was no security around the site itself so access could be gained through the trees and surrounding countryside. If the site security had been better I would have definitely have stayed put and continued what had been, overall, a very happy stay.
Well 2010 again ended up being a good holiday break at this marvellous site to which I returned to time and time again throughout the season, improvements had been made as always year on year, staff were great and the owner as friendly and funny as ever.
There is always a lot to do locally and the village pub grub is definitely, a must for any visitor as it is well above average.
So what with the beautiful countryside all around you, with national walks right beside the site, all tastes are catered for and I recommend it to all.
What a fantastic place, I came up from Padstow to sit two exams in Plymouth and needed a tranquil and stress free environment for studying and relaxing.
Everything I needed, was there, clean and tidy shower block with an endless suply of hot water, laundry room with the use of a deep freeze and fridge, even a hi fi system for all to use, and close to hand.
The owner, what a fantastic person, cheerful, helpful and if he wasn't there, only a phone call away. The local pub the 'Foxhound' about 2 minutes walk from home base has a wonderful selection of local ciders and beers, with the added bonus of the landlord being a fantastic chef, and little gems, like all you can eat curry nights for a pittance.
Needless to say both exams were passed with flying colours and am looking forward to studying for more quals using Venn farms as a home base.

I use this site every year and continuously enjoy my stay making friends from around the world that I keep in contact with to this day, its owner is the salt of the earth and everyone is always so friendly, with all local amenities and services being close and excellent the site seems perfectly placed for a quite, relaxing and enjoyable break.
Excellent little site with a personal welcome. We ( 2 parents and a 21 and 17 year old) were looking for somewhere quiet without a bar / disco / fast food / bingo / pool / playpark etc and this is it!
Quiet and flat, we had a choice of pitches and were told to go and use the kettle in the kitchen to brew up after we had pitched and then wander over when we were ready to settle up.
Showers were hot but some of the washing up water ran out. Toilets were scrupulously clean and bleached twice a day-really can't fault them. We had a lovely time and went to see the firework competition.
Definitely worth a return visit and good value too-my sort of camp site. Plenty of shops in Plymouth and a large supermarket within easy driving distance.
We have just got back from a weekend at this site. As other reviewers have pointed out this site is cheap and cheerful. And extremely friendly - everyone we passed on the way to the loo etc spoke to us!
Yes, the toilet and shower blocks are basic, but clean and more than adequate - free hot showers; no need for tokens or 50p's here. There was limited space for washing up, but we never had to queue. There are also fridges and freezers available for general use, and a microwave and kettle.
It is very relaxed when it comes to where to pitch, although help is available from the friendly warden (Lynda) but that maybe why some reviewers have felt to be too close to other units, but the benefits outweigh the disadvantages eg there was no rushing us away at the end of our stay.
We went for a walk (using the excellent Brixton walks leaflet) then came back and had lunch before taking down our by-now-dry tent. The vicinity to everything is a real plus - the pubs, restaurants, village shops, including the fish and chip shop, and numerous walks meant we didn't need to use the car at all.
This was a lovely site situated in a quaint village and within close proximity to Plymouth. It is a well maintained site with an extremely helpful and friendly owner and wardens. A basic site with clean and well kept toilets and shower block also incorporating a separate room with fridges and microwave.
There is also a pick up and drop off service for laundry including ironing. The local pub provides brilliant meals and is a few minutes walk away, as are the shops. If you are looking for a very reasonably priced site, some peace and quiet and beautiful countryside, then this is the place for you.
Plenty of space, plenty of hook ups, and freedom to pitch where you choose.
We stayed here overnight on our way to France. The wardens were friendly and site fees reasonable. The chip shop does great chips. Plymouth is straight forward to get to from here. Well that's the good bits.
The site is I would say just good enough as a stop over, and I do hate to say that. We had a non elec pitch and the ground was sodden, and even worse morning after as we had rain. There was a terrible smell too of which we couldn't decide what it was.
The toilets were basic, reminiscent to a site I stopped on 20 years ago in Wales as a child. Cold, uninviting, cobwebs with spiders watching every move. My Hubby is a stickler for showering each day and even he refused! The pitches were rather packed in to, and a few people did look a bit concerned, guide ropes nearly touching.
Its hard to find cheap sites around nowadays but this was a reasonable price, reflects in the condition of it though.
