Very well run site, with nice facilities (plenty of hot water) and very pleasant and helpful wardens. A lovely place to relax, and amazingly quiet given how close it is to the M25. It is quite a large site but the design breaks it up nicely so you feel like you are on a smaller site.
An good staging post for us for travelling west or indeed for those hopping into London.
A short-ish walk from excellent shops and some lovely forest near for dog walking.
I've stayed at this nicely kept, friendly site several times over the last few years, most recently in July last year for a single night.
Facilities are good and very clean, the lake is pleasant and best of all there's a superb pub nearby! It's quite a stretch to The Barley Mow, probably a couple of miles, so leave yourself time to get your food order in. You won't regret it and the walk back to the site does wonders for the digestion.
I'll probably be back sometime in the spring, possibly with the family. It seems unfair to keep alluding to how good the pub is without taking them.
A return visit for us to this lovely, peaceful site. Have reviewed before but just wanted to say how very helpful and welcoming the wardens are. It was our first outing in a new caravan (3 days!)and they were very admiring and urged us to consider getting a tracker fitted (we will!) and were just generally lovely. We had two car-loads of friends join us on Saturday tea-time and again, they could not have been more helpful and welcoming. Well done the East Horsely crew. We'll be back - and soon! Highly recommended.
We are regular visitors to Horsley and have made may good friends there. There have been many comments about the children's play area, well more lack of it.
There is now a brand new and amazing looking play area for the children. It has two swings and a picnic bench, climbing area and the biggest slide ever :) Just thought I would let people know.
The toilets are always clean and tidy, and the managers Paul and Janet are so welcoming and friendly. All the assistants go out of their way to help. This site has had what I consider to be unfair reviews in the past.
It is excellent if you want to visit London or surrounding areas and use your van as a base. If (like me) you want to just sit and watch the world go by there is no place better than a nice cuppa by the lake.
Unfortunately, no where much to walk to, you need to get in the car. Having said that Guildford, Woking and Leatherhead are nearby.
Yes the site is lovely. Wardens very helpful, the lake is very pretty.
Pity you can't say the same about the women's showers. Do people who install showers in campsites ever use them? I think not. Otherwise why would they think it acceptable to have to stand in a huge puddle of water after you have showered to try to dry yourself, then dip your trouser bottoms in said puddle. Anyone could see to make water run away to a drain, you need to slop the floor.
We have been here many times, and it is our favourite site by far. Toilet/Shower blocks are always clean, Staff always friendly & helpful, well laid out site and great fishing on site. Good pubs local, a couple within walking distance. Lovely little village with a mile, where you can buy pretty much all you need. Each time we leave East Horsley, we can't wait to get back again, which will hopefully be in a few weeks time. Only cause for concern is when we leave, it's a bit tight getting out of the gate, but it has improved my towing technique!
Horsley is everything that a good campsite should be. From the friendly welcome upon arrival from the wardens, you are taken to your pitch, and given advice on which angle to best pitch at and shown where all the facilities are.
Toilets and showers were spotless - there never seem to be enough showers on any campsite if you make the mistake of going in the morning rush, but the queues were all friendly, and there were plenty of wash basins and soap dispensers as well.
The shop was well stocked, offering the standard iceblock loan service and various food and sundries for sale.
The campsite itself is beautifully kept, with tents pitched on grass or in woodland, with a lovely lake in the middle. The lake is populated by carp (fishing is allowed if you purchase a pass) and some wildfowl.
There are other shops, pubs, a Chinese restaurant and fish and chip shop a short drive away, but nothing within an easy walking distance.
The campsite is family and dog friendly, with most campers being considerate and quiet in the evenings. We'll definitely be returning, and would recommend it to anyone else.
Staff very friendly and helpful on arrival, we had a choice of pitches under the trees. The site is well maintained and the showers were free with plenty of hot water. The staff were even kind enough to plug in my phone to charge it for a couple of hours.
The only problem with the site is that it seems to be on the flight path to and from Heathrow, and the noise is constant from first thing in the morning to late into the evening.
Its a brilliant place if you want to visit the National Trust homes of Hatchlands and Clandon Park and Wisley is just up the road.
The Assistant managers were very good and allowed us to select a suitable pitch near the facilities. We don't require electric so flat pitches for a small tent were at a premium.
Why do the CCC think tent campers are happy to have a pitch on a slope or miles from the facilities? They go out of the way to help caravanners and Motor home owners who pay the same as us and, after all, have facilities of their own that they don't use!
The lake was a useful addition to the site as it provides fishing and a picturesque venue. The site is some way from the nearest shops or pub but ideally suited to touring Surrey.
We spent 14 nights at this site and loved it! We chose it because it was a useful base for visiting the area's many attractions (Legoland, Chessington, Thorpe Park, Windsor castle, innumerable National Trust properties). Once there we discovered many other interesting places to visit nearby (eg Brooklands, the Watts Gallery), and we found plenty to keep us occupied every day. There is some lovely countryside nearby, and the railway station in Horsley provides easy access to London had we run out of places to visit!
The site was generally peaceful (apart from some occasional overhead planes). It was tempting to spend some time relaxing by the lake on the site watching the fishermen/women, and feeding the ducks.
There is a useful array of shops in the village (bakers, butchers, newsagent, Budgens and Costcutter). There are a couple of pubs, and though we didn’t try these they were recommended by our neighbours for “pub grub”.
A significant number of caravanners store their vans on site and return frequently. So although there is a community of regulars who seem to know each other well, we did not experience a “clique” …. Like the staff they were friendly.
The staff were welcoming, helpful and informative. Facilities were spotlessly clean and generally adequate, apart from at the weekend (when the site was full ) and we did have to queue for the showers.
My only (minor) negative comment is that the site is not well signposted, and it is easy to miss the narrow lane which leads to it.
This is our first year as camping and caravanning club members, so I have little to compare this site with in terms of other C&CC sites. For us its major advantage over many of the commercial sites we have used is that the “quiet” times from 11pm to 7am were strictly observed, and on the one morning they were not, a word from the staff seems to have been effective in preventing a repeat episode.
Just arrived home from a weekend at the site and we had a really lovely time at this campsite. The lake and surrounding area is beautiful and the staff were very friendly and helpful the toilets and showers were really clean. The only downside is the lack of children's play area 1 swing and that was it the site would be even better if they had a children's play area, however even with the lack of a children's play area we had four children between the age of 2-4 and they had a really fantastic time.
A good weekend had by all. Will use this site again.
All you would expect from a Camping and Caravan Club site, very good quiet location given the proximity to motorways. Very good dog walks on and leading directly off the site was a lovely safe conservation area.
The pitches round the lake looked lovely. Unfortunately we were in one of the small fields which felt very cramped.
My wife and I (mid 50’s) with our two dogs stayed at this site for the first time over the Easter break and have booked to return here in July for another long weekend.
We were lucky enough to get one of the lakeside pitches which made our stay all the more pleasant and definitely the ones to grab if you get the chance.
We found all the staff very friendly and helpful and the site well kept and clean. The main shower block, complete with laundry and washing up area was again very clean and there is a second set of showers within the reception building, so no problem if one is closed for cleaning.
Both had plenty of hot water with no silly push button cut off mechanism. The site was full over the weekend but we didn’t have too much trouble with queuing for showers. It seems that many people aren’t aware of the second shower block.
There is a small dog walk area which connects to a conservation area where dogs can go off lead. It’s not huge but you can make a 30 to 40 minute walk of it. Also it has gravel paths so even in the wet you’ll not get muddy.
The main attraction for us is the proximity to the Surrey Hills area which has endless possibilities for some very scenic walks. There seem to be few campsites in this area and we will definitely come back here even if we’re not lucky enough to get a lakeside pitch.
I've stayed at this site several times, and in general, I like it. As seems to be the case with all C&CC sites, the pitches are small and close together, and even the hardstandings get muddy.
The amount of mud and muck on this site is my biggest complaint - that and the fact that the main toilet block is closed for 2 hours in the middle of the day. Surely they can't take that long to clean - they're not that big!
It's decent for walking dogs, but not if you're used to walking off site and going for hours. The nearby conservation area is very nice, but tends to get boring after a few times, particularly for big, active dogs.
One big plus is the showers, which for a nice change aren't the irritating temperature-controlled push-button type so often found at C&CC sites. Being able to just enjoy a nice shower without constantly turning around to press a button is a luxury.
The wardens are generally nice, but can definitely get a bit shirty if you don't pay attention to the posted signs. Heaven forfend you don't know the entry gate code has been changed and you have to hunt them down to get it! They seem to change the code randomly, so you may well get caught off-guard.
Overall, though, it's a nice site, and on clear nights, the show of stars you can see is tremendous.
Not cheap and the playground is too minimalist - the dismantled slide was in a compound alongside the old and little used recreation room. Another irritation is that families with under 12s are not given pitches around the lake (makes sense) but those are the only pitches within range of the site WiFi so little play equipment and no internet for young addicts.
But an attractive venue with helpful staff and pleasant dog walks straight off the site. We have used it for the last four October half terms and will be back.
Guildford Spectrum is just seven miles away with superb ice skating and swimming facilities and we find Horsley a convenient base from which to start the Xmas shopping and also to do a London attraction or two or Chessington or suchlike. There's even Michael Jordan's enormous caravan shop just a few miles away, too.
