The John O Groats Caravan and Camping site is uniquely positioned on the headland at John O Groats, next to the ‘first & last house’ and overlooking the small harbour with its ferry service to the Orkneys. The expected range of tourist facilities are all within spitting distance, including the old hotel which (sadly) is currently being re-developed into holiday flats. However, what is really special about this location is its stunning views across the Pentland Firth to the Orkneys and in particular the nearest island of Stroma.
We stayed here on the second night of a family motorhome tour around Scotland, at the end of August (2012). This was our first such holiday, as well as our first Scottish holiday.
After a full day’s tour up the coast from Aviemore, we were keen to get ourselves set up and find somewhere to go for our evening meal. We arrived somewhere near 7pm and as it turns out, the staff (owners?) were waiting for us to arrive before closing the office/reception for the night. Despite having to wait for us, they were most friendly and helpful.
Unfortunately for us the only place available at this time for the family to eat was a rather uninspiring looking pub / hotel / guesthouse thing about a mile up the road. We elected to jump in the van and drive up the coast road until we found something a little more appealing. What we found was the Castle Arms in Mey - eight miles away. A little gem of a place this, with cosy bar and restaurant. Nothing too fancy just good food, good company and the hosts were excellent (and a room of photos of the Queen mum).
At John O Groats there are three cafes amongst the touristy facilities but all were closed by 7pm.
As it turned out this was to be the second cheapest site we visited over the week - but this should not be viewed as a reflection of the facilities or the service to be found there. True, there is no clubhouse, children’s playground, shop or swimming pool but when you can pitch up on the cliffs at the north-east tip of Great Britain, with magnificent panoramic views across to the Orkneys, such things really do pale into insignificance.
The separate male & female WC & shower facilities are bright, spacious and spotlessly clean. In between is a laundry room with wash up facility which we didn’t use but looked to have all the necessary bits & pieces.
There are a number of fresh water supply points dotted around the site along with a single waste ‘water’ disposal shed/facility.
I did not come across a grey water disposal point but will admit to not searching very hard.
There are both grass and hard standing (gravel) pitches with electric hook up available for caravans and motorhomes, as well as the extensive spaces available for tents.
Overall we thought this was a great campsite and would not hesitate to recommend it to others.
…and oh what a location!

We arrived at about 6 in the evening. The staff were very nice and helpful.
The site itself is very clean and well kept lots of fresh water taps
Toilets are very clean as well and the views are magnificent. The first night we got there the sunset pictures we got from the pier were fab.
Overall for the views I would say this site was a must on the list of sites to go to and we would definitely come back here

We weren't planning on visiting this site but came further north to avoid the midges! so glad we did. The site is immaculate. Clean toilets, large free showers with plenty of hot water. We pitched overlooking the sea in a beautiful spot. Sat watching seals swimming by at night.
Duncansby stacks is a must place to visit. One tip- follow the fence instead of the path and you'll find a gate that leads you to a fantastic spot. Nobody went down there till they saw us and followed. Pub just outside the site and a shop too. Was expecting the place to be very touristy but it wasn't. Just a perfect place to stay

Good handy site, we used it as a stop over for the night for the early morning ferry to Orkney.
Grass flat pitches easy to peg out, clean toilet facilities ample space, and 10 min walk to a friendly local bar and restaurant.
Pleasant sea views and we were especially lucky to wake up to seeing several pods of whales close in to the shore so lucky to be there that day.
Large Tesco a few miles away for fuel and provisions.

This is a lovely site right at John O'Groats. Our pitch overlooked the sea. They are gravel pitches. The shower/toilet block is old but clean and the showers are enormous with lots of hot water.
The hotel at John O'Groats is being refurbished and was closed. You have to pay to have your photo taken by the famous John O'Groats signpost. The post even gets taken down at night! However, there is a painting of the post on the wall down by the ferry and you can take your photo there for nothing.
We stayed for 3 nights and thought that we would be struggling to find things to do however, it is probably the biggest surprise so far. This is our 30th site on our tour around the UK.
The first day we walked along the cliff edge to the Duncansby lighthouse. A bit further and you can see the seagull colonies and magnificent rock formation called Duncansby Stacks. You can see the seagull nests amongst the rocks and the scenery is stunning.
I believe that you can drive up there if you don't want to walk. The 2nd day we did the ferry and coach trip to the Orkneys. What a wonderful place and steeped in history dating back to the stone age years.
Amazing. It is a full day and well worth doing. The 3rd day we drove out to Thurso and called at the castle of Mey on the way back.
This castle was saved from ruin by the Queen Mother and she had it restored and spent all her Summers there until she died. We didn't go inside the castle as at 9. 90 thought it a bit expensive but you can walk around it and also walk round the beautiful walled gardens for free. Worth a visit.
All in all what we thought was going to be a quiet 3 days ended up being quite hectic. TV, internet and phone reception was good.

This site overlooks the stunning Pentland Firth, nice and quite at night ~ watch the sunset.
The campsite is by the finishing line at John O Groats.
There is a local shop in walking distance up the road for basic provisions/gas bottle exchange.
Tesco is about 15 miles away in Wick or Thurso about the same distance.
The toilet block though old are very clean and appear to be freshly painted.
There is a laundry with dish washing area inside.
Showers are extra huge, useful if with children.
There are not many sites for less than £15 a night in July and August, so we thought this a bargain in comparison with the club site on the road. The site is level and has a number of hardstandings which we didn't have to pay extra for.
Highly recommend the day trip to Orkney, catch the boat from the campsite - Advantage, if you don't have sea legs you only have to stagger back to your unit in the fresh air as I did.

What a site. Our pitch was on the cliff edge with views over a azure blue sea towards Shetland.
I have been to this area before, but in the winter, and there are no sites open (that I found). However you could not be closer to the top of Scotland and the views are justification alone for staying here.
All the facilities are present and correct - and the site manager was accommodating and not dictatorial
All in all one of the best places we stayed in 2011. - mind you it was superb weather as well!

This site was exactly as I expected after reading its reviews (as no other information is available.) The shower/toilet block is fairly old but I thought it was the most spacious I have ever seen and had a truly lovely shower upon arrival. The owners were amongst the friendliest I met in Scotland, having stayed on 9 sites over a 3 week trip. The site itself was very spacious and clean, and had beautiful all round views with great access to the beach and coastal walks. Even though the weather can be harsh we had a great stay and would definitely go again as there are lots of boat trips and places to see in the area (weather permitting). As for shops pubs etc. Closing at 6pm this suited us fine as there was a lovely quite atmosphere throughout the area.

Spent 4 nights at this campsite. Very basic but kids enjoyed the freedom to explore the beach and surrounding area. Toilet / Shower block very clean again basic. 20p for shower gives plenty of hot water. 20p for hair dryer enough to dry both my hair and daughters. No noise after 10pm so very peaceful and quite.
Local shops all touristy and close at 6pm. Also note the John O Groats sign is taken down at 6pm you need to pay the photographer if you want a photo taken with your town or give a donation to charity for a photo taken with a blank town.
Can recommend the Maxi tour to Orkney well worth the money and you can see Orkney in 9hrs.
Overall if you get good weather and want a remote relaxing few days with great views use this campsite.

Spent two nights here as part of a trip around Scotland.
Site itself was clean, tidy and basic. Showers and toilets again basic but spotless, 20p for a shower but plenty of hot water.
We were there over the weekend and shops shut early and provided only basic provisions. Indeed we had to go back to Wick to top up.
For an excellent great value meal we would recommend the Sea View hotel.
John O Graots is refreshingly not commercialized, the beaches were clean with seals right off the site. We took a trip along the coast on one of the site seeing boats and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Stunning views across sea to the Orkney's. If we had had more time we would have gone over to the Orkney's. We would stay here again.
