Stayed for 3 nights. A decent, if basic, site with thankfully sheltered pitches given the local climate! If you stay for any duration, you will definitely get some weather to test your tent either wind or water-wise, so make sure you find a sheltered pitch against boundary hedge! The shore-side pitches look tempting, but check the weather.

Staff were generally helpful, although after saying we could pitch on any grassy area, eventually came back when we started to say that we couldn't pitch where planned due to the fact that it was adjacent to a powered pitch. Thankfully that was just before the tent was pitched and we moved a hundred yards away to be on the safe side.

Wash and toilet facilities are basic to say the least. You need to pay for showers (20p), although this seems to buy more than sufficient 'hot water' time to get a long shower. On the plus side, the shower cubicles are huge and you don't have the usual difficulties of keeping clothes 'out of the wet' as a result. Just don't expect modern fitments - I would estimate that the blocks are 30+ years old and haven't had any significant refurb in that time.

Locally, John O' Groats is bereft of any real facilities. The entertainment for the kids is what you make it - so crab-lining at the harbour and shell-collecting at the local (and well-named) Shell Beach were the order of the day. Eating out is limited (if you don't want to drive 15 minutes to Wick) to one reasonable local hotel (15 mins walk) which catered well for our large party and the kids and was reasonably priced.

Would recommend a day-trip to Orkney while you're up there. We took the 'shortened' tour which was plenty long enough for the kids, although we did find the one-hour limit in Kirkwall for a lunch stop and browse 'challenging' - but it meant we saw more of the islands. Another good stop for kids is the sea wildlife centre over at Dunnet Bay which is free and the kids found interesting.

In summary, this a reasonable site and you have to remember where you are - so don't expect a huge amount of entertainment options. For one or two nights it would be fine, but longer and you would find the distinct lack of any local facilities an issue.

Spent 4 nights here. Flat site in excellent location. Friendly owners. Great views over to Orkney. Just a minute's walk to the Orkeny passenger ferry. Great swimming bays a short drive away - Dunnet Bay and Sinclair Bay. Lovely small beach near site along headland towards Duncansby Head [easily walkable along the headland if you are feeling energetic].

Impressive cairns and standing stones also in area.

Site facilities are dated but clean.

This was the second stop for our club on our way up to Orkney.

Reception was very helpful.

Nice clean site, right on the cliff top. You can pitch your tent anywhere basically.

Toilet block quite old but clean,20p for the showers and get key when you book in.

Site right next door to John o Groats centre/shops.

Stunning views,especially sunset!

Well worth the visit. There is no playpark for the kids on this site.

You can camp right near the beach for some of the most spectacular views of the Orkneys. The pitches are fairly flat and you can choose where you want to pitch.

Reception was open 10am until 10pm. You are given a key to access the toilets/showers and dishwashing area. These were very clean, the showers cost 20p and were hot and long.

Next door is the John O’Groats complex with a cafe. Also there is the harbour with day trips to the Orkneys. Further down the road is the Seaview Hotel with a public bar with a wide selection of Whiskies(40 or more). There is a Tesco’s in Wick and another one in Thurso.

Nice size pitches on hard standing or grass. Next to all the gift shops and signs at John O Groats. If lucky enough to get good weather as we did quality views across to Orkney. Shower blocks definitely school like, but clean and tidy with plenty of hot water in showers 20p, which was enough time for good shower. Also 20p for hair driers not that I need one. Good walks along coast and round to light house. Would definitely stop again if up that way. 2 adults dog and hook-up £16.

The view to the Orkneys was fantastic as was watching the seals frolic in the sea. Very nice site but surrounding area not that great considering its stature. Hotel looks run down and shopping area has vacancies. Leaves you with a slightly disappointed feeling that has nothing to do with the camp site. We couldn't even have a drink with our kids because it was only a bar that was open and not a lounge. However, this was the only site that required change to operate the showers.

I was only here for a single night, but was impressed.

The shower and toilet block is quite old fashioned and school-like, but very clean, and the shower rooms are large and private, with a bench and enough space to change and put you things. The showers take 20p pieces- I took a pile, but only used the one- I didn't exactly hurry, and the shower neither stopped nor got cold (took a minute or two to warm up, though!) in that time. There's no timer display on the machine, but as I said, I found they lasted plenty long enough.

The pitch was reasonably priced, and you can pitch up where you like.

The Orkney islands are visible just across the sea (until the mist comes down!), and the site itself is right on the edge of the sea.

A great little site- as at least one other reviewer has said, it is neither a dump nor overpriced as you might cynically expect in a tourist area like John O'Groats (though in truth, John O'Groats is a much less flash affair than it's southern brother land's end, and has a more relaxed, uncommercial feel to it in general).

The Groats inn is friendly enough, and was very quiet on the night I was there, though this varies from day to day apparently- on some nights it apparently gets a good little crowd in.

Recommended.

Excellent site, niether the rip-off or the dump you might expect to find at the very end of the road. Overlooking the first/last house, sea and islands. Nice walk along the headland/beach (pebble and sand). Friendly staff who were seen rarely and never bothered us at all. Enough toilets/showers for size of site. Hook ups available on a lot of pitches, essential for a heater if it's not warm ambient temperature as the site is very open on all sides and the wind will get you. Nothing else here apart from the pub and a few gift type shops but a well stocked post office 1/2 mile up the road. Would we stay here again? Yes, but only 1 or 2 nights again.

Very cheap, very good facilities, very helpful, park where you want. Beaches are not very nice but seals in abundance just round the headland. Stayed for three nights although only planned one stop-over. If you've got kids not much ... if anything for them to do on site

Best site we have stayed at, due to its simplicity, cheap rates and friendly staff. We turned up and were given the option of pitching our tent wherever we wished. It was refreshing not having to pitch in line with a stake and facing in a certain direction.
The scenery around the site is breath-taking and watching the ferry crossing to Orkney was fun.
It is well worth spending the money on a day trip to Orkney.
We stayed 3 nights and will remember our visit to John O'Groats for many years to come.
