Which is a good job because it was raining and extremely windy! We were helped to pick a spot that was out of the worst wind.
We ordered one of the fire baskets and plenty of wood so we could have a nice romantic fire. Unfortunately it rained too much the first night so we waited until our second and had a great roaring fire. What's the point of camping if you can't have a fire huh!
The campsite was peaceful and we practically had a whole corner to ourselves.
Unbenounced to the campsite owner, I proposed to my girlfriend that second night, with our roaring fire and loads of tea lights it was quite romantic despite the rain!
I got a soggy knee and thankfully she said yes!
So Willow Garth will always have a special place in our hearts.
Just returned from this super little site. Nothing too much trouble for the lovely owner. All pitches are level and plenty of room around each one Although there are only a couple of showers and toilets. We never had to queue even when the site was quite full.
Quiet and peaceful highly recommended, a great base for touring the lovely Yorkshire countryside. Try and find Beck Hole with the smallest pub you will ever see !
Regarding comments made by other campers who used the Golden Lion pub in the village, we must say our experience was quite the opposite but there again we were not accompanied by a screaming child. Great food, home made not 'home cooked'. The landlady is what may be described as 'a character ' her cooking skills second to none.
We were very lucky being able to get a pitch at this site for the Jubilee weekend, having booked weeks in advance elsewhere but due to bad weather they had to let us down on the day we were due to travel. The owner of this site initially couldn't fit us in but rang me back to say they would manage us as they had a cancellation. I was eternally grateful as my little boy was gutted as we had cancelled 2 previous trips due to bad weather.
The site is lovely, we were in an orchard and had plenty of space around us even thought the site was obviously fully booked. The site is easy to find and access, the owner was very welcoming on arrival and you can buy eggs, milk etc at the house. You can also get fire baskets, they will loan you ice blocks and provide you advice about local attractions.
There is a mixture of units and types of campers, everyone was friendly and polite. The facilities are good and kept very clean, the only downside to them is that the wash sinks are perhaps a little small and there is nowhere to put your soapbag when you are having a wash. However, this is the only problem I really found and it was a minor irritation. There are two showers and they are unisex, there didn't seem to be any issues of queues to use them.
There were no instances of inconsiderate campers with noise late at night, this has been a problem for us in the past as we have young children.
There are no playground facilities but that is just as we like it, even though we have children, we bought things for them to entertain themselves. The only thing you might want to be aware of especially with younger children is there are some ponds behind the site and one on the site.
The local area is lovely, some really pleasant traditional villages, we visited Eden Camp (an ex WW2 POW camp) it was good value with plenty to see, Filey is also a lovely traditional Victorian seaside and worth a visit. We ended our visit with a trip on the North York Moors Railway which was gorgeous, very busy but worth doing.
Overall a really lovely site, a great find considering it started out as an emergency replacement, we really enjoyed ourselves and would definitely stay again and recommend it to other campers.
Cannot thank the owners enough for finding space for us.
Friendly owner showed us round the site. The site straddles a road, so because we had small children, we were put on the side next to the shower block so they didn't have to cross the road.
Clean showers and toilets. £1 for 15 minute shower. Lovely hot water. Site sells milk, bread and eggs. No shop nearby, but two local pubs.
The one we tried, however, The Golden Lion, 300 metres away was the worst dining experience I have ever had. The food was okay but the service was appalling. We were made to feel very unwelcome, as if they were doing us the favour by serving us, and everything was too much trouble.
We came to Willow Garth and had a really great time. We we a family of 2 2 adults and 2 children and with the added bonus (lucky us) 2 dogs each family WEHEY!
Anyway the site across the road from the regular site was well kept especially with it being near the river bank. We had lots of space for the families and dogs and had a great time here. Yes the toilets and showers where across the road but to be honest we liked this as we were in the quiet side and loved it.
The owners where great and the facilities being basic was so good value for money we would recommend it very much for the area it least.
If we could put it down to points here they are
GOOD POINTS
1. Very clean and well kept. 2. Spacious plots 3. Lovely area 4. Great owner of the site.
BAD POINTS
1. Fields opposite main site was connected with quite a busy road so you can't let your children to wonder on their own to use the toilets or showers as I couldn't my son was 9 and daughter 12 and I would not trust my son to cross the road on this own. 2. We heard lots of traffic mainly through the day so if you go here pitch the tent nearer the river bank for a bit more quieter sound proofing.
Over all the site is such good pricing compared to all that we have looked for we would come back here as we loved the area and value for money.
We were very warmly welcomed and shown around facilities. We were in the orchard and had loads of space we came as a group of 1 caravan and 4 tents 17 people and 2 dogs between us kids had plenty of room to play.
The only problem was the toilets and showers though they were very clean I personally felt uncomfortable walking through washing up facilities and shower area to go to the loo.
I also felt uncomfortable in the wet room as shower was right in front of a window and as it was dusk I felt a little open to viewing
Fantastic if you want somewhere out of the way but if you need or forget anything is 6 miles to the nearest shop. Road quite busy during the night too (may have just been harvest time as loads of lorries and tractors) son and nephew and brothers were very pleased with the fishing as caught about a dozen fish during there stay.
Since our two children were on holiday with their Grandma, we decided to use our child-free week as an opportunity to go camping. After ringing around various sites we stumbled across this one and I'm very glad we did!
The lady owner was very helpful over the phone when taking our booking and at £7. 50 a night for two adults, a tent, car and a dog, our initial thoughts were 'whats wrong with it?!' Our fears were laid to rest as we pulled into Willow Garth though.
The site is small compared to others we have stayed at, but it is beautiful and well looked after. We registered at the house where we gave our details; name, address, car registration etc, we were given the site rules - much the same as any other campsite. The owner then gave us a quick but informative tour of the site.
The mens toilets are situated at the far end of the block behind the shed. The ladies are situated further down along with the showers (wet room and single) and pot wash.
There is also access to a washing machine, tumble drier and lots of local information. All of the facilities are on a meter so take plenty of 20p's with you. It is 20p for 3mins in the shower and £1 for 15mins.
The hot water for the pot wash is about the same, but I would recommend you use a washing up bowl (if you have one with you) when washing the dishes as we discovered that the water goes cold quite quickly in the Belfast sink that is there.
There is also a fridge and chest freezer available for campers to use which costs £1 for the duration of the stay. A pound well spent for us as it got ridiculously hot during our stay and the freezer blocks melted quite quickly.
The facilities were basic but immaculate, I really can't fault them and I think if you feel you need more to add to the experience then I would suggest you go abroad. The owner and cleaner were very friendly and were both seen cleaning up several times a day. The site seemed to be quite busy too but we never once queued to have a shower, use the toilet or wash the dishes.
The site itself is split across two sides of the road, which can be quite busy during the day with farm traffic etc, but it was always quiet at night. We live in the city so we didn't really notice it that much, but others might.
We were told as we didn't require EHU we could pitch anywhere we wanted in the Riverside Field opposite the main house. The field is a good size and well maintained and there are two access points to cross the road to get to the rest of the facilities.
The first night we were there there was only us and another tent pitched at opposite ends of the field and this suited us nicely. On our second day, we took a drive through to Pickering to discover on the way that Flamingo Land is just a 10minute drive away, a major plus point for us!
Malton is also close by and there is a Morrisons and a Sainsburys Local for the essentials that you forget to pack.
We made friends with the family who pitched next to us on the second day, they have two children who are almost the same age as ours and we have all booked up to return to the site in September so we can visit Flamingo Land together.
