My first visit to a camping and caravan club site and I was very impressed. This was my first stop on my way to tour Scotland and it was a great start to the holiday. The people are very friendly and cant do enough to help and the pub on site was run by a great landlady who let me take the dog in but I was told that this was only possible as it wasn't busy. The site is spotless and the pub is great with local ales served and a real friendly atmosphere. I'm still on my trip as I write this review as all I can say is that the other 3 campsites that I have visited since Windermere could learn a thing or two about how to run a great site from the staff at Windermere. I liked it so much that I may well stop off again on the way home. Well done Windermere !

We spent a good weekend here, 2 of us in a caravan and 3 in a tent.

Despite it being a huge site, it really does not feel too big, as there are lots of different areas. There is a good children’s play area and the loo and shower block was kept nice and clean.

The bin areas could have done with being emptied a bit more often, and it is a shame that they only accept recycling at the entrance to the site. (I know it is not too far to walk with your bottles, but obviously some people thought it was, so perhaps having crates at all the bin areas would assist more people to recycle. )

We used the on site pub for a meal as the weather was so awful. Children are not allowed in the pub side, but are in the dining room side. This was a bit grim in terms of décor and atmosphere, but it certainly was convenient for tired, soggy families. The adult meals were all around £10, the kids were £4.

Obviously the location of this site is the real draw, although you cannot see any lakes, they are on the doorstep.

This campsite was nice to look at and the toilet facilities etc were good. Unfortunately, what let it down was the attitude of the staff and the rigidity of the sites rules.

On arrival we were subjected to very serious conversations about the shape of our tent and also how close we had camped to our neighbours. I agree with safety rules but the way we were spoken to was not pleasant.

It was raining during our stay and so we tried out the on site pub. Please don't make the same mistake. Very over-priced poorly cooked food. Again more rules - no kids allowed on the soft seated side. Families were subjected to a very grim area with TVs blasting and canteen tables.

We are usually very easy to please but can say we would not recommend nor visit here again mainly due to poor welcome. We have even gone as far to cancel camping and caravanning membership in fear they are all that rigid. Was also very pricey for no electric.

This is our umpteenth visit to this handy site in the heart of the lakes. Its as you would expect, plenty of space. The staff are helpful and friendly and guide you to your pitch on arrival. The toilets and facilities are excellent. Clean and well maintained.

There is a restaurant on site and a shop. But be aware that they only take cash or cheques, no cards. It was a bit of a pain for us as we wanted to eat there but had to go and find a cash machine - almost 6 miles away. So we found a pub nearby and ate there instead.

We found the site quiet and tranquil, its also very close to several paths and walks, so ideal if you want to walk from the caravan door.

We are regulars there and would recommend it to anyone

Lovely site, ideally placed in the South Lakes, just a shame it is starting to look a bit shabby. Bar dull & boring, like sitting in a transport cafe. Restaurant prices for food, but the surroundings don't live up to it.

There is a shop on site, where you can get various items of groceries and your Daily Paper. It also sells locally sourced products as well.

Ideal place to walk to the little village of Staveley where there a couple of pubs, a beer hall & a lovely cafe called Wilfs overlooking the River.

Fisherground Campsite - Eskdale

Nestling in the beautiful Eskdale Valley close to Scafell, England's highest mountain and Wastwater, this site is a children's paradise in the heart of the Lake District. The first thing that meets you on arrival is the pond, fed by a stream and usually full of children paddling and playing on tyre rafts. The playground has zip wires, climbing frames, tyre rope-swings and adventure courses.

Grass pitches (some with EHU) for tents, motorhomes, VW-sized campervans (no caravans). Refurbished toilets, showers and laundry. Peace is the watchword on the campsite - catering mainly for families and couples with silence after 10.30pm. Don't forget your marshmallows - campfires are allowed in selected areas. Nearby shop and pub. And there's an added extra: the site sits along the route of the Ravenglass and Eskdale Steam Railway line, with it's own station. Choo Choo! Find out more here

I booked this site last minute on the CCC website, having failed to get a spot at countless other sites within easy striking distance of home for our son's birthday weekend. I didn't hold out much hope.

What a relief - this place is great! We had to queue in the car to get on because the entrance gate gets blocked up with waiting caravans(well we did arrive at tea time on Friday!. We were shown to our pitch by a man on a tractor. We were a bit worried because we seemed to be wending our way through paddocks and wooded areas aplenty and way beyond the toilet block we had seen! We were given pretty strict instructions on where to pitch and where to park etc. I can understand it though because everyone was thoughtfully spaced (and observing the 6m rule etc). Although there were tents behind us, they were diagonally behind us so you didn't feel on top of anyone. A fairly large grassy area was to the side of us with nobody on it for quite a distance so we felt we had plenty of room.

Facilities were really good - really recommend these. There was a toilet block about 2 minutes walk from our pitch - always very clean with mop & bucket arrangement post-shower being very strictly adhered to by all the ladies I saw. There are private vanity areas with light over mirror etc, which I found a nice touch. Also there are dishwashing facilities in the block which were clean and had draining racks over the sinks which was very useful and not seen anywhere else before. Water taps a plenty and bins emptied regularly.

The site is nicely landscaped and all the pitches were very flat. The ground is rocky with a thin layer of earth / grass (albeit beautifully kept). You need strong pegs and patience.

Children are welcome, though we never managed to find the play area (just too busy I suppose). There were signs up at the time of our visit stipulating no ball games that week. Many younger kids were flouting this rule - mine included for a very small time. How do you keep balls & kids apart!

Location is great. Whilst it describes itself as Windermere it is really a good few miles outside (which I prefer because Windermere and Bowness are fairly over rated in that part of the world - though the lake itself clearly beautiful). Also ideal for Kendal and a touring base for the whole of the lakes. It is distant from the main road so whilst it is well connected, there is virtually no noise. We visited the Lake District Visitor Centre at Brockhole, which has a great adventure playground, walks to the lake and beautiful cafe / terrace / orangery with lovely shop and information centre. We could have spent hours here.

All in all I would really recommend the site - despite its 250 pitch capacity it really does not feel overcrowded or festival-huge etc. Don't let that number put you off.

Just returned from a 2 night stay at this site. I can only but praise everything about it, it was fantastic. Maureen the lovely owner was so pleasant and helpful, showing us to our pitch via bike.

Our hardstanding pitch was very level we hardly had to adjust and the nearby grass that we were also allocated looked as though it had been 'cut with nail scissors' it was so perfect.

The site has 250 pitches but you'd never guess. Some of the pitches were tucked away in trees and up little ramps. It was also nice to see a mixture of tents and caravans being allowed to be near to one another.

It was so peaceful and the allocated pitches are nicely spread out that you don't feel overlooked.

The shower blocks were spotless, even with fresh flowers and they were never ever busy at whatever time we chose to venture in. The on site pub was lovely and my husband loved the 'real ales' We had a platter for 2 and it was lovely and well priced at £9. 99.

Cannot wait to return to this site, it was one of the best we've been to. Only a couple of downsides. You can't get a mobile signal for love nor money.

The camp shop is well stocked (9am to 6pm) but they can't take switch cards for produce (although their head office will allow you to check in with switch) so make sure you have enough ready cash.

Just returned from a 3 day stay. Great site, accommodates tents just as well as caravans and motor homes.

Good location close to main road (A591), but far enough away from not to be an inconvenience. Only 10 min drive to Windermere and another 10 mins to Ambleside. A couple of trails pass close by the site for local walking.

Facilities on the site were kept very clean, and good to see showers are inc in the price.

Site is well used by family's, and it appears to be very safe for children. Although I did notice a small section for those without Children.

Pub on-site is a nice touch, which also serves food. Food is basic and wouldn't receive any awards for quality but is convenient.

Lovely site. We have been with friends for the past 3 years. We have always managed to get pitched together.

The grass pitch was quite wet when we visited this May (it had been raining a lot) but they will put your van on for you which minimises churning up the pitch.

Showers and toilets are always clean. Nice little pub on site. Lovely walk across the moor/fields to Staveley where you can catch the train to Windermere.

Easy access to South Lakes area. Relatively quiet site where the usual C&C rules apply.

Love this site always spotless. Toilets are always clean and warm.

Nice bar on site with pool table, they serve food but haven`t eaten there. There is a small laundrette 2 washers and 2 driers, dish wash area is undercover which is always good if weather isn`t clever.

There is a good park for the children. Dog friendly and nice walks around the area.

Visit Stavely and go to Wilfs the food is gorgeous and if you sit outside you have lovely views over river.

You are 5 mins from Kendal where there are plenty shops.

Winderemere is about a 10min drive and Bowness 15 mins.

Stayed here for two nights with my in-laws as we couldn't get onto the Keswick campsite for our whole week away. A big, busy site but well broken up by trees and hedges. Reception was friendly and efficient, showing us to our reserved pitches via bicycle and explaining where the nearest showers, water etc were. Site looks very well maintained but could not comment on the toilets/showers as we don't use them.

Nearest town is Staveley, a decent 40-min walk along country roads, quicker if you know which fields to cut through! Staveley has a station, chippie and the usual shops. There is a dog walk just out of the site (turn left down the un-used road), it is very picturesque and I'm surprised its not mentioned more as its a lovely walk and very big. There were also some fishing lakes nearby but we didn't visit them. A very nice site which I would definitely visit again.

Just returned from the BH break from this site, so I'm reviewing whilst its still fresh in the mind.

We booked this site last-minute, even though we knew it was big (not normally our choice), and expected it would be busy and noisy. We weren't wrong, but as we were 'beggars' on this occasion, we couldn't be choosers.

Many campers have had a great experience at this site. Ours was different. We'd only just joined the C&C Club barely a fortnight earlier, and immediately booked through their interactive website. We booked a grass pitch for a motorhome with an awning (or sun canopy, as it narrows the definitions down to).

On arriving, we were told as we were in a motorhome, we had been 'moved' to a hard-standing pitch. Excuse Me??? They said that they didn't like motorhomes on grass pitches much before June, as the ground can be too soft. While I can understand this if drainage is a problem, why offer the facility on the website? I cant believe with the software in use today, that this cant be built into the booking system - which I believe is tailored to each individual site.

Anyway, even if all this was accepted, why not contact us after booking (and taking our deposit), and give us the chance to accept or reject the proposed alterations?? We'd deliberately chosen grass as we knew the ground was very dry for the time of year.

After we'd had the temerity to challenge the 'changes', and insist that we were given the pitch we'd booked, out came a very surly bloke who we took to be the main man, and repeated what we'd just been told about the grass and the wet and the weight of motorhomes etc., then, agreed that as the ground was very dry, proceeded to 'allow' us what we'd booked as if he was doing us some kind of favour - in essence honouring the booking agreement. I said if the hard-standing had grass adjacent, it would be fine - we just didn't want to sit out on gravel. 'Would we be using an awning?'

Yes. In that case it would break the 'six metre' rule, so we couldn't do that. (this 'rule' transpired to be pointless, as a number of units were nowhere near six metres apart!)

Once on our grass pitch, thinking we'd somehow been given special dispensation, we ended up having another 4 or 5 motorhomes as neighbours on the same grass pitches, so what on earth was all the fuss about?? I really think they screwed up the bookings, swapped us to 'hard', and just didn't like 'dissenters' in the ranks!

The site was busy, and noisy at times, due to the large number of kids staying. That said, we had a very nice stay, spoiled only by an incessant wind that hardly abated for the whole duration. The facilities were plentiful round and about, but we didn't use most of them.

There are a number of walks from the site in all directions, Staveley - the nearest village, has a pub and shop, along with a railway station for trains to Windermere and Kendal - which we availed ourselves of.

As for the site; as nice as it may appear, there are a lot of trees (some branches rattling the top of the motorhome, I'll just mention) therefore are some distinctly so-so pitches. So dark and dingy that you'd need a torch in the daytime to see what you were doing.

we have stayed at the windermere site approximately 8 times now, started off here camping and really got the bug and jumped to a caravan and I've got to say this is a great site.

The first time I towed the van I was a little worried about pitching it but the staff were brilliant and gave me some great tips making it look easy.

The toilet facilities on site are spotless and the site in general is beautiful located just a 5 minute drive into windermere itself.

There is a pub on site which serves a great pint I always sneak one in whilst I'm taking the dog for a walk at night. The staff on site are very helpful and the shop is well stocked with the essentials.

This site is brilliant for caravans and tents whatever unit you have. There is a good play area on site for the kids and a games room just off the pub with a pool table and tv.

Will be going back many times again in the future

Excellent site. This is my fourth visit to a C&CC site and this one meets the high standards I've come to expect. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Toilet/shower blocks were very clean, the rooms warm and the water hot. There was more than sufficient for those using them and I never saw a queue for the showers even though it was Easter weekend and fairly busy. The playground was not large but the kids enjoyed it.

The on-site shop had all the necessities, including local bacon and sausages (the bacon was lovely) and OS maps. The small bar was well stocked and had very good Real Ales. The bar lady was very friendly. The bar is adults only, but there's an adjoining room where families can have a meal, with a pool table (50p) and some local guide books.

The food prices were similar to pubs in the area (I didn't try the food, but those that did appeared to be clearing their plates).

The nearest village (Staveley) is about 2 miles walk away (5 mins drive), has two pubs, a Spar (7 days/week), a chippy and a children's playground. There's a Camping Clothing Shop and a filling station that also sells the basics about a mile away.

Windemere is 5 mile and up to 20 mins drive when it's busy tourist season. Kendal closer and easier to get to. Bowness on Windermere is easiest via the back roads through Staveley and Crook. Perect for people that like the Lakes.

Well worth a stay.

A large well laid out site, and visiting for our first new year in our caravan it was great to see the extensive decorations around the site. The site has its own pub which served well priced meals and was always warm, welcoming and friendly - which clearly extended across the whole site, a great atmosphere throughout our stay. This was our fourth visit to the site, but first New Year.

There were plenty of toilets/sinks showers which were all immaculate and cleaned daily and of course heated. We don't recall a play-area, but didn't look for one

The site shop selling sufficient provisions to keep you going and a two mile walk across country to Stavely was well worth the walk as they had most other shops that you could want. There is a lot of walking to be done in the area.

For new year the staff had organised a large text next to the pub, with a WWII Fancy Dress Theme - despite winning one of the first prizes for going as a land-girl it was definitely the best new years party we've been to since the millennium - the atmosphere and input from fellow campers and staff made it worth every penny, so much so that we're off again in 2011 for the 60's fancy dress theme - with every intention of winning again! Watch out campers!

Due to the snow we were advised to check if we could get down the lane from the layby off the main road and if not the staff offered to bring a tractor up to us. After booking in we also had a tractor escort us to our pitch, in readiness to take over should we not be able to get on it due to a few inches of snow.

The site managers and staff (and pub staff) were amazingly happy and jolly throughout a trying period (heavy snow) throughout. Nothing ever phased them and they were always on hand with a warm, welcoming and friendly smile. A real credit to the CCC Club.
