This is a great little camp site just a 20 minute drive from Whitby. As others have said the loo's are not the Ritz but are usable. We had 3 nights there and everyone was friendly, even the sheep came in to say hello as someone forgot to close the gate. All in all great time there, we will be going back sometime this year and have already recommended it to other friends. Get there early as you don't need to book unless you want electric, as there are limited pitches. There was anout 45 tents on the field we were on and the bottom field had about 25 caravans on.
Just spent a great weekend there. Wonderful views from the actual site and good natured neighbours. Facilities are basic but kept clean and prices are reasonable. The beauty of the site is its rustic charm and of course being able to cook all your own food on an open camp fire. There were plenty of children on the site who were enjoying collecting the newly mown hay and piling it up to play with. There were also plenty of mild mannered sheep nearby to keep them amused. The site does what it says on the tin. If you want heated pools, a club house with kareoke and bingo and creche facilities this is not for you. If you want good honest old fashioned back to basics camping it's ideal. I will certainly return and will recommend it to friends
This campsite is nothing spectacular, but is ok. I took my 3 children aged 6,5 and 6 months along, they enjoyed it as there was plenty of kids for them to play with. It is one of the few campsites in the area which allow campfires so we had great fun. The only problem was it was a bit noisy until 2am as everyone was having fun. If you are a light sleeper and are looking for a relaxing campsite then this is probably not for you! It is the first time we have been and we are going back as it is a great place to have a fire, bbq and a few drinks with friends. The toilets are disgusting, but for £5 per adult and children free you cant really complain!
Although facilities are limited, they have the basics - toilets (as others have said, don't forget to bring your own toilet paper), cold running water, unisex shower (free!) and another must for me is being allowed a campfire.
Pitch where you like in the camping field which is at the top of the hill and has sufficient flat areas to pitch a tent on.
We camped as a couple without children on this occasion - I don't think our children would have enjoyed this basic site as there is nothing for them to do, they're usually satisfied with a stream to paddle in or a rope swing and trees to climb so perhaps this place is better suited to adults.
And as for the sheep... The farmer did ask campers to keep the gate to the camping field closed but people kept leaving it open so we had a few visits from the sheep which to be honest is a plus for me!
All in all OK for £10 a night, and the location isn't bad with the village and pub 5-10 minutes walk away.
At the last minute on a bank holiday weekend, we decided we wanted to go camping. We originally wanted something closer to the sea, but with the weather forecast being brilliant and the long weekend, that was not to be. After calling around tons of full campsites Friday night, we ran across this little gem. The owner said to get there early, as they did not take reservations.
We were there before noon the next day and easily got a pitch at the top of the hill. We had a challenging time getting our tent up because it was very windy (plus it was a new tent!), but after that was accomplished we could relax and enjoy the surroundings. Lovely mooreland and lots and lots of sheep!
The facilities were very basic, which we already knew about from reading other reviews. We did bring our own loo roll, which was needed about half the time. The weather on the day we arrived turned wet (the forecasters were wrong!), so there was no chance for the toilet room to stay clean. It's a farm. It got a little muddy and put my wellies to use. This didn't bother me too much, but our 5 yr old daughter was more particular! Since there was only one toilet each for men and women, at times a queue did form, but it was never excessive. I did not use the shower, but my husband did and said there was only one and there was usually a queue.
Because of the hill, there was room to fly kites kick balls and throw frisbees, which several people did the next day. On our field there was an enclosure with some ducks and geese which the children found entertaining. There were some issue with noisy campers until about midnight that first night, and had it not been so windy, I might have complained. But, the wind made much more noise than they did as it pounded our tent! There were no trees on top of the hill to help as a wind block.
The second night we were there, someone left the gate open and some sheep came into the camping field. They did not bother anyone and soon made their way down the hill and out the other gate.
The location of the campsite is lovely, as it is only a short walk down to Goathland. It is where Heartbeat is filmed, and the town seems to revolve around that. I found the sheep that wandered free charming. There was a nice playground for the kids in the town as well, which my daughter enjoyed. I also loved the general scenery of the mooreland.
One of the days we drove into Whitby and had a stroll around. Plenty to do there if Goathland is too small for you.
So, the campsite is very basic and down-to-earth, but it was good enough for us and in a charming location. But if you want bells and whistles, this is by far not the place for you. As far as whether we would return, I would say that we probably would.
Beautiful tent only site set on a family run hill farm in the Yorkshire Dales, nestled between Ingleborough and Whernside. The Three Peaks footpath runs right through the farm adjacent to the campsite with lots of walks direct from the site from easy strolls to climbing the Three Peaks, and five minutes to the pub!
Tent pitches only, no electric hookups. Toilet and shower block and washing up facilities. Sit, eat and socialise in the old barn, with free wifi, charging lockers, freezer. At weekends the Philpin Snack bar is open for cooked breakfasts, hot and cold snacks and drinks, ice creams, chocolates etc, on other days there are vending machines in the barn. Find out more here
My son and I visited the site in May 2009, finding it was simple, and the site was just what we were looking for, a base camp, with basic amenities, the site takes tents and caravans, the tents on a separate field which was fairly hilly, but no problem finding a suitable level pitch area. This is a working farm, but that adds to the feel of the site rather than detract from it, watching them feed cattle, and round up sheep was great to see. One excellent advantage to this site, is that they allow campfires. At the end of our first day, there we were with two other lots of campers, sat around our campfires. At 11pm at night, listening to the owls. Brilliant. The site is just on the edge of the village, the pub is 5 minutes walk away, and the shops 10/15 mins away. Footpaths, waterfalls, moorlands etc galore, literally within minutes walking distance. If your looking for a rustic, basic, back to nature campsite, then this is a must. If your looking for a clubhouse, loud music and something for the kids, then this isn't it, you will have to find somewhere else. And leave this one for us.
We booked a weekend here at the last minute as the weather was glorious. The camping field was on a hill but the top was flat and there was plenty of space as there were very few campers despite the weather.
There were two toilets at the bottom of the field where there were a lot of caravans which had considerably less room than the campers. The toilets were rustic and you had to take your own paper, but perfectly satisfactory. I don't believe they had showers, but I couldn't be sure.
The site is in a fantastic location. Great views down to Gothsland and close to Whitby. It's big appeal for us, however, was the fact it allowed camp fires. Again I don't think the owner sold wood, but can't be sure as we didn't see him to ask. The pitch coat £10 per night for 2 people.
If I had to sum the site up, it's very basic, laid back, well located but perhaps a little expensive for the facilities. I'd definitely stay again though as I love basic!
Stopped here for a weekend and thought it was a nice basic campsite, it was the summer of the floods across yorkshire so had plenty of rain, the camping area at the bottom of the site was flooded so we camped in the field with the sheep, very soggy ground but added to the fun. Lots of sheep droppings around so you'll not be wanting to walk around in sandles :) This is one of the few sites around that allows campfires which was great, its a working farm, the toilet block is down the hill near the farm house and is basic. Looked like there were some resident caravans on site but didnt see anyone, it was very empty but that was probably down to the bad weather, so we were alone with the sheep, which left us to our own devices. I wouldnt leave any bags of food around the outside of your tent or you might get woken by some nosey sheep! it was a cheap site only a few pounds a night
Great site. Basic field, quite steep in places. Friendly folk, been coming here for at least 10 yrs on and off. Exposed to weather, been camping there in the snow previous easters. As for the animals you would have thought they would have been toilet trained by now.
Been coming to this site for 5 years, yes it is basic but you get what you pay for . We have made some good friends over the years and will keep going to the site its a great place for the kids the farm workers are nice to know and the views are great . If you are lucky you get to see Heartbeat being made. As for the sheep its their farm, their home, so no point going on about them.
