There comes a time when you have already upgraded to a bigger car (twice), and you still cannot fit all your camping gear in, including the kids and dogs for a weekend away, so what do you do?
1) Pile the boot and back seats high and squashing the kids in the process,
Or
2) Start looking into purchasing a roof box to stow away all that gear,

Well if you opt for option 1 we hope you leave a space to see out of the rear view mirror, but if you choose option 2 then hopefully we can start you off in your search for that perfect roof box, because lets be honest, they are not the cheapest bits of kit on the market and are a one-off investment.
We have been given the task of putting a KAMEI GRIZZLY M – 400ltr roof box through the paces and this is how it faired.

The Test
The KAMEI range is shipped in from Germany and I must say that the GRIZZLY M is one of the best roof boxes I have come across, it is solid, tough and durable, yet lightweight and easily manageable coming in at a mere 16kg.
Although large in size, at 158cm long x 93cm wide x 41 m high, we easily secured it onto a variety of vehicles including
- a Ford Focus,
- a Peugeot 405 estate
- and a Jeep Grand Cherokee,
When it came to the Jeep we did however have to get the extra wide U bolts as the bars on the
Jeep were too wide for the standard U bolts. It was easily accessible and getting stuff in and out was not a strain except for the Jeep, that was purely because I am only 5’8” and so is my wife and Jeeps are quite high, so if you have a
4 x 4 vehicle then you may need a stepladder as well.

Using a fitting system that grabs the thread on the U bolts we secured this to each vehicle with minimum fuss and frustration. There is never a need to drill new holes with both the front and rear fittings able to slide making the roof box universal. The GRIZZLY M is completely symmetrical so even if travelling abroad you simply secure the roof box so it opens on the offside, making it safe to open whilst driving on the right, a handy touch for those long trips to the South of France.
With the internal fittings flush to the base you get maximum storage space offering optimal space for all those kid’s toys. It is very easy to open and close using the gas struts, and the locking system is fantastic, you cannot remove the key unless the box is shut and locked therefore avoiding those worrying moments when you have closed the roof box and panicked that the keys were still inside.

Overall
Overall a fantastic roof box and well worth the investment, you may pay more than you would for a high street named box, but you have to consider the quality and durability of them, it is an investment that won’t be repeated for a long time, so it may be worth thinking about quality rather than price.
