The campsite itself was excellent, pleasant friendly staff who were very helpful. Nice toilets and showers and a tidy site. It could be more level but you can't have everything. The only negative is below the site on the cliffs down to the beach, it is much used by anglers who leave beer cans, bottles, BBQ's fishing line and other rubbish. Such a shame as it spoils the whole experience and makes it dangerous to take children or animals. Not really the sites fault more those fishing from it!
There is no pre booking at this site, it's huge. We were booked in by the very helpful man in hut at the entrance to the camping fields and given a pass card for the barrier. I would like to mention that we only wanted to stay for one night because we had just bought our new tent and couldn't wait.
In the field at the top, where we pitched, there was a water point and a loo block that only scored 1/10 and that 1 point is because it was there. It had one room with a sink and a mirror and 3 loo cubicles two of which had holes in the roof and the puddles on the floor where green with algae!
There is a shower block I saw it in the next field but after seeing the loos I gave a very wide berth. The field was gently slanting and boarderd by hedges but this site is on the cliff and so expect wind. The views of Benllech Bay from this site though are picture postcard and worth the price alone.
Will I go back?? Yep been going to this town and site either in a tent or a static caravan for 40 years!
Ideal for a short stay. We had our baby with us, so picked a quiet spot in the corner. We like the site because there are lots of different little fields where you are able to go (as long as you don't need elec) the main field is a free for all.
You can park where you like, doesn't look good but I'd imagine it's ideal for groups.
The toilets are very basic and not very clean. There are two blocks, one which is open 24hours a day and another which is shut at night. The ones open all the time are not very nice. The walls have un pleasant stains on them and they are old. The other block is nice, with really good hot showers.
There is also a washing place to do the pots. It's tucked away behind the loos, it is a good size with really big sinks!
Overall we don't mind coming here for one or two nights, but wouldn't spend a week here, mainly because of the toilets.
I'm really sad to be writing this review. I have stayed at this site for the past 3 years always at Easter, but this year it was different.
Firstly, if you haven't been, the site is large and set into sections, statics / permanent tourers / seasonal tourers / holiday tourers / tents.
We have a touring caravan, we usually pitch up on the family/holiday tourer field. Only this time, the round bit of this field had two huge seasonal tourers right across the field - blocking everyone's view.
Also, unlike previous years, the holiday field now has many seasonal tourers - consequently, all the kids know each other and don't take kindly to new kids. On top of that, there were a few van conversions with only adults, and they were swearing, drinking and smoking dodgy fags from early afternoon.
The two shower blocks had only cold water as apparently the solar panels weren't performing as they should.
Finally, the electric supply couldn't handle the demand because of the awful weather and packed in a few times, on the last time the electric board actually blew up and couldn't be repaired for 3 days.
When I got home (early - obviously), I wrote to the owners who completely missed the point of my emails and didn't even offer any sort of recompense for the electric element of an abysmal holiday :(
Needless to say, we won't be going back to Sunset although we will go back to Benllech (& infact we are going to Treardurr Bay next week).
On a positive note, the actual wardens are great blokes, it's not their personal fault that the owner has let standards slip and not invested the money where it is needed.
We love this site; and have returned time and time again for the last 7 years. The location is perfect within easy walking distance to the beach, shops, pubs etc. Great for families. My husband loves fishing and the rocks beneath the site are accessible. I would strongly advise however that you avoid over the bank holidays as the site is far too busy and tents get pitched too close. During the last August Bank Holiday a tent near us lit an open fire; it was literally 10 feet away. Needless to say we packed up the next day. We will be returning this summer but not during the bank holiday. I can highly recommend the site at any other time of the year.
Stayed here during the summer holidays having tried to book the Tyddyn Isaf site, only it was fully booked. This site offered the comfort that it was never full and so didn't take bookings.
So, the good bits. Nice location, nice views, cheap site for smaller families as the charge is person based with under 6 year olds free which was good as we have a 5 year old, close enough to walk to the town and the beach as both 15 mins away and lots of tree lined small fields to pitch in.
The bad. There are very few level pitches, infested with wasps, lots of litter all over the place, below par toilets, 50p charge for showers, noisy, no policing of site and last but not least. They are never full. Because they just keep letting them in!
We paid for 3 nights and had two decent nights where the site was busy, a bit noisy, but mainly families. However we returned after a day out on the Friday to find a long queue of people booking in at 8pm. Most appeared to be all male groups and not the sort I'd want to be pitched next to.
After a delay we got back to our tent to find someone had pitched less than a metre behind it and someone else 3 metres in front. It looked more like Glastonbury. Our immediate reaction was to wrap up and leave. As we did more were arriving and boxing us in. I ended up moving the car and someone pitched where it had been within minutes! We got the kids in the car and drove home during the night.
If you want a family site with some privacy, avoid this one at weekends. It's a free for all and there's zero respect for the rules and no management of them at all.
Large all male groups in the family field, caravans in our tent only field, people pitching in gaps that were left free for privacy. Etc
Nice location, met some really lovely people on the two nights we had but it was taken over by big groups of hellraisers on Friday
Just got back from a fantastic weekend at Golden Sunset - our second so far this year.
Discovered the site after being unable to get a pitch at St David's Park, down the road at Red Wharf Bay. The facilities are fine, with toilets and showers cleaned a few times a day. The atmosphere is relaxed, and you can pitch where you choose. Get there in good time and you can even bag a EHU, with power all in with the price.
Plus Benllech has all you need with regards shops, pubs etc and the Spar and The Co-operative are well stocked. There are a couple of good butchers and a fish shop selling fresh lobsters so you can really BBQ in style. The beach is an absolute gem too.
The site is very affordable - a lot more so than St David's and you basically get the same view, a mile along the coast for a good few quid less.
All in all, if you get great weather (which we have done on both visits this year) Anglesey is a top place and Golden Sunset is a real find.
This was my first time camping here since I was a teenager, almost 30 years ago. Although this is very basic site the warden was so helpful with nothing proving too much trouble for him.
The views are absolutely stunning and the facilities clean but again very basic. If you want an experience of true grit camping then this site cannot be beaten for the views and the locality of shops & wonderfully clean beach.
There is a fish & chip shop just by the entrance onto the caravan park and this is a must to go to as the fish was beautiful and thanks again to the warden for the recommendation.
This was our first ever trip in our beloved (but ancient) touring caravan (after years in a tent).
The only reason we went here was because friends of ours are seasonally sited here so we thought at least we'd have someone on site to help us.
First of all, you know that rain that comes down in massive plops, well, that was the rain we arrived too!
We've NEVER sited a tourer before - my husband and I are not actually speaking to each other at the time of arrival due to the various stresses of a tetchy 4 yr old and a grumpy 7 yr old and a huge white box attached to the back of a new car that refuses to be reversed! (it's funny now but wasn't then).
We asked the park warden to help us an despite the awful weather he was so helpful and lovely, I can't thank him enough, plus after 3 hours of trying to get our Whale water thing in and giving up, this poor warden came out in his jimjams to sort us out, so, so kind, we won't forget his kindness.
When we woke in the (dry) morning - what a view, we were on a hill and could just see the beautiful blue sparkly sea in front of us. Then we had a good wander around the camp, it was immaculate everywhere, and the facilities (showers) on our field were great.
We didn't put our half size awning up (we didn't know how too!) but learnt a valuable lesson - put your awning up or your caravan get's very wet!
All in all, fabulous place, there's a couple of chippy's, couple of ice-cream parlours and a couple of pub's, and the beach is stunning with a little old fashioned shop that sells all the usual beach paraphernalia.
It was £26 a night including EHU and a lovely warden :)
It was my first time camping for 20 yrs so I took my 3 boys with me. Site fees very reasonable for peak season. Facilities were clean. Site staff were friendly. The views were very good. There was plenty of space. We booked for 3 nights to try it and ended up staying for 6. I would recommend the site to anyone. The boys loved the big white sandy beach and the rock pools at the bottom of the site. There was plenty of local shops & takeaways (pretty pricey though) but worth it we already planning our next visit
