Stayed three times during July/August (just one nighters) so maybe not the greatest review.
Firstly, the site is huge but spacious and you would be seriously unlucky not to find a pitch. You would be seriously lucky to find a flat pitch when it's busy. The sea view is a bonus to wake up to.
I found the toilets and portaloos were different condition each visit but generally passable, (all public loos in my opinion should have toilet brush and bleach). The showers were also passable.
Benllech itself is a really nice place with good pubs and really nice, well priced shops,it's a short walk from the site. £7 per person per night is in my opinion about average and is good value for this site.
We stayed at this site for just one night in July, which was enough really. The plus points are the location as it’s close to the town, and the views which are magnificent.
On the downside the road in is rutted, the site is far from level and has no hard standings, the toilet block is very basic and not particularly clean (it also costs 50 pence for a hot shower), and at £20 per night for a motorhome + 2 it was the most expensive site we stayed on in the area.
Not good value for money at all and given the choice of sites on Anglesey I wouldn’t stay there again
We stayed here for three nights. This site is a case of 'the good, the bad and the ugly'! The 'good' is the location. There are fantastic sea views and a nice cliff walk from the site towards Benllech. The fees are very reasonable too, we paid just £14 per night with electric in high season.
The bad is the facilities, it was a really mixed bag. The shower block just to the right of the main entrance (down the slope) had recently been refurbished and the showers were relatively clean and pleasant. The toilets next door were not! The toilets and showers on the family field were far worse, so much so that we moved pitches after I checked them out because there was no way I was going in there.
I have reserved the 'ugly' for last: the toilet block located in the second field through the farm gate to the left (after you go through the left hand entrance barrier). It looked like a set from a post-apocalyptic movie or an example of what a nuclear blast does to a building! I would seriously rather wild camp than go in there!
The poor facilities would prevent me from spending a longer holiday at this site but if you have your own toilet and only need to use the shower, it's OK for a night or two.
Our first trip out in our new tent, with family group. A sloping pitch, but somewhat sheltered by the trees. Not very impressed with the main toilets - -could be cleaner. They did have portaloos dotted around and these were very clean. The bins were handy, the only trouble was the seagulls emptied them when they could, but it was soon tidied up by the wardens.
The site was quite busy but there was plenty of space for the kids to play and have an adventure in the woods, or tennis, football and so on, but no set play area.
Not sure if I would visit this site again - but the views were fantastic, plenty of space and secluded areas. Beaches and surrounding areas clean and well worth visiting. If facilities were cleaner it would be a definite revisit!
Arrived Saturday morning of bank holiday weekend and booked in at reception. Asked for family field but was told everyone was mixed up and it was quite busy so to pitch anywhere, were not given any directions or assistance. Drove around site and eventually found quite a secluded area to pitch, even had a sea view. Parts of the site are quite open whilst others are screened by bushes etc and some pitches were sloping. The site is in Benllech so only a short walk to shops, pubs, chip shop and garage, very handy. Toilet block basic, lucky if you had toilet roll, no soap to wash hands and no paper towels. Grafitti all over toilet doors, never seen this on a campsite before. Open bins beside toilets with used sanitary towels etc in, vile. Dishwashing and chemical disposal around the back. There is a shower block next door with free showers, open 8am til 7.30pm. Went early and was surprised there was no queue, then I found out why, it was cold! Was told there was another shower block with hot water but you had to pay 50p.
A variety of age groups use this site so expected some noise, however was not prepared for loud music until the early hours, shouting and foul language. People in a small tent next to us had a toddler with them and they packed up and left!
The site has spectacular views and access to cliffs via a steep path. Went down to fish but found broken glass and litter everywhere.
Have been camping in Anglesea for years so was really looking forward to going back to this beautiful island. What a shame, the site had great views, great for fishing etc but the toilet facilities were poor and the site was just too rowdy so will not be going back.
I have just had a great weekend camp at this site. The touring fields are vast and are open to tents and caravans. The site is secured with barriers and you are given a pass to the barriers when you book in. This gave me a feeling of security. There are a variety of enclosures to camp in and there was a designated family area. I chose to camp in the lower field that had lovely sea views.
The site was gently sloping in nature, though there were some level pitches to be had. Having arrived on the Saturday of a bank holiday weekend, I either had to squash in next to somebody else or chose a sloping pitch. I chose the latter. It was not a major issue, just had to remain aware of the slope and act accordingly! I do think I got the best views though, as some of the level pitches were screened from the views by bushes.
There was a toilet block and a shower block in the field where I pitched. These were adequate with lighting. Toilet paper (of the soft variety!) was available most of the time. There was 2 wash hand basins but no soap or paper towels. There was also electricity points in the loos and I found these were often utilized by people with their straighteners or phone chargers. The shower block looked more modern and I believe these showers were free. However, as they were closed between 7.30pm and 8am I didn't get to use them. I would have liked one before I put my jim jams on the second night but had to manage with a babywipe wash! There was also a place to wash dishes and somewhere to empty your loo. I must say though that all the basins were at a really high height. Anyone shorter than 5'5' might stuggle (send the men ladies!)
There was access to the cliffs from the field, which was obviously a popular fishing spot. Fishermen could be seen accessing this area throughout the day and night. These cliffs would have been a nice spot for sunbathing too. The coastal path was also accessed from this point. The path was a very pleasant walk to Benllech. Nothing too arduous but maybe not for very young children.
Benllech has everything you might need with 3 small supermarkets, various pubs/ restaurants and at least 2 chippies. I can recommend the jolly fryer, they wre jolly nice chips even if they were a tad expensive! There are also other shops and I even noticed a shop that sold calor gas and camping stuff! The beach at Benllech is wide and sandy with the usual ice cream shops and beach shop. I did notice that dogs are banned from this part of the beach.
On the down side, this is not a quiet site. I experienced loud music on both nights I stayed and someone with a generator! It didn't really bother me too much and it didn't stay on late (past 12). But if you are looking for a quiet time, then it may be worth remembering that this site is not really regulated with regard to noise. The family field may have been different.
I really enjoyed my stay and will be using the site again. At £6 per night I found it to be really good value
I've got to say that this site is wonderful. I've been going to this site since I was 5 yrs old, with my mum and dad, I'm now 42! The showers and loos are always available and cleaned everyday and new loo roll etc. Bank holidays porta loos are supplied to keep up with the demand, Dave the warden is wonderful, and so are the rest of the lads that keep the site going. The views are amazing, and very central, the donkeys go on the beach in school holidays, and the beach is clean and safe. Dogs are not allowed on the main beach, but there is a marked off spot for dog owners, which in my oppinion is a lot better, away from sand castles and screams ! The local camping shop has everything you need, to replacement poles for a broken tent to calor gas and fishing rods, crabbing gear, they provide an excellent service.
This site is secure and now has a night warden to keep the noise levels down. But please note, bank holidays are very busy, imagine how hard it is to keep a site this large completely quiet. Spare a thought. The cliff path walks are brilliant and easy, id recommend this magnificent place to anyone who can show respect for others. And those that don't can stay away. Please note you are not allowed fires on this site at all.
Went to Golden Sunset for a weekend in May and for a few days after August Bank Holiday. The views from this site are fabulous - we stayed in the camping field without hook-up (3 families) and there was only 4 other families there after the first day (could have been the weather).
The family fields were quite busy and seemed fairly crowded.
Toilets and (free) showers in the main block were always clean but the water temperature in the showers varied a bit. There is another very basic toilet block in the bottom corner of the camping field but again always clean.
There is a pot wash and a clothes washing room (just 2 sinks) with a plug for your hairdryer etc. Friendly helpful wardens on site.
Access to the sea is down a very steep path and then on to some dramatic rocks with lots of drops and gulleys - be careful with dogs and small children - some good fishing though.
Nice walk down to Benllech for the sandy beach along the cliff path or you can take the road - a long uphill trek back though.
Benllech beach is very clean and tidy with the usual seaside things available. There was a church group running a jolly singing club right on the beach in August.
Dog restrictions are in place but if the tide's in you have to take another 20 minute walk round to the other side of the bay.
The garage in Benllech has just upgraded to a reasonably priced well stocked supermarket and there are shops for fresh meat and veg as well as a fishing tackle shop.
This was a lucky dip choice campsite for the bank holiday weekend, and I can say I really enjoyed it. We were welcomed by a lovely white bearded gentleman, who gave us a reasonable price of £36 for the three nights stay and advised us on the best places to pitch, which was on one of the lower fields surrounded by trees but with some sea views. Just far away enough from the family fields.
The site was a collection of enclosures which housed caravans and tents some with electric and some without. There are two shower blocks one with free hot showers and one with a fifty pence slot which gave you around five minutes to shower. I didnt mind paying a pound for a decent hot shower. The only down side to the campsite is the toilets and sinks. In one block they had I think four or five toilets but with only two wash basins. And I don't think cleaned to often. Certainly not enough in my experience. Oh how can I forget, the toilet paper, its the old school tracing paper. Bring your own! Surely the money they made on the bank holiday they could upgrade it to a softer one.? Gentler on the old tush.!
Saying that they are my only complaints, I will be coming back. Bennlech is a lovely town with three shops to get all your grocery's. A co-op, spar and a costcutter/petrol station. Also two fish and chip shops, if you don't feel like cooking. And a few pubs. The beach is within walking distance with a little shop to get your beach wear and a cafe attached. And a little to the left at the top of road looking down on beach is a lovely bar, you can sit outside and enjoy a cold drink. Liked the place so much we are going back in a few weeks for another weekend.
