I stayed on this site with my two boys, age 2 and 4, for one night to introduce my youngest to camping.
As other reviews have mentioned, the roads leading to this site are narrow, one was so narrow it was only just wide enough to take my car, but lucky for me I didn’t meet another vehicle coming the other way.
We arrived around 10 on Saturday morning, and it wasn’t too busy so we had a good pick of pitches.
It began to get quite busy around 12 so I would advise to get there early to get a good spot.
We pitched next to the stream, which I found to be a good spot, the sound of the water was very tranquil, although I would recommend some midge repellent.
The walk from the tents to the car park/toilets was a bit of a slog, but also added to the adventure because it gave it a feeling of wild camping. The slope down to the tents provided great fun for the kids sliding and rolling down.
The toilets seemed clean enough, I didn’t use the showers as we only stayed the night so I can’t comment on these.
There was drinking water taps provided by the tent pitches which was very convenient, and rubbish bins, which were regularly emptied by the warden, who was very friendly and welcoming.
I found this site very good for families with children.
There are many places for children to play and explore including a playground which is hidden at the other side of the stream, my boys soon made some friends and had a great time.
I would recommend this site to families with children or couples who are looking for a peaceful friendly site, and as it only cost me £5 for the night its great value as well.
One night only, but very relaxed. Chose the site from previous reviews which described it well, but the site is only flat in parts and heavily terraced, so would be a problem if busy. Worth looking around for a good spot before pitching. The higher ground gets the early sun, which does not reach the lower area until much later, because of the tree shelter.
The walk back to the car is a stiff uphill slog, so don't take too much gear! I relied on the postcode to guide me using my gps phone. I ended up on a farm track high above the site, unable to turn round. The approach roads are narrow and busy with surprisingly wide and fast traffic, but worth the effort
First visit to this site and it was Lovely. The woodland walks are great and nice and safe for the kids. We only stayed one night, so the hike to the site from the carpark was not that much of an issue.
Very peaceful site, but there was only seven tents on. Shops on the main road about a mile away, so a car or bike is advantageous.
Site facilities clean.
We used this site as a base to visit nearby Hebden Bridge and visited the market. Great tea rooms and charity shops!
Stayed here with my young son in a lightweight two man tent, the idea being to give him a taste of overnighting in a small tent as opposed to the family camping holidays in larger tents he had previously experienced.
Arrived after a period of heavy rain but pleasantly surprised at the lack of surface water throughout most of the site. I think there were four tents on the site, so certainly not overcrowded. Warden very friendly and helpful. My son had a fine time exploring the woods and playing in the stream.
The toilets are basic and up a hill but that's part of the charm of the place, it does feel more like wild camping than a big commercial site. I wouldn't want it any other way!
Decided to stay here on Saturday as wanted to get away from the city for a night and to be near to Hardcastle Crags for a walk on Sunday.
As the site does not take bookings I called and asked were they full before we set off. The warden was very helpful, said we should be Ok to find a spot as they were not full and even gave us a full weather forecast!
Upon arrival we were not disappointed, the site is long and thin with a river running along side, the sound of the water running all night was idyllic.
The only downsides were the hill and the midges, I'd recommend insect repellent and some citronella candles.
The warden was very friendly and helpful. He let us get set up and then came by and had a chat while we paid him the very reasonabe £5 per person.
The site was not full and we got a spot away from other tents, no noise at all at night.
I would definitely recommend driving to the National trust Hardcastle Crags car park and taking a walk to Lumb Bridge, there is a waterfall with a pool below perfect for swimming, it was very cold but invigorating!
Beautiful tent only site set on a family run hill farm in the Yorkshire Dales, nestled between Ingleborough and Whernside. The Three Peaks footpath runs right through the farm adjacent to the campsite with lots of walks direct from the site from easy strolls to climbing the Three Peaks, and five minutes to the pub!
Tent pitches only, no electric hookups. Toilet and shower block and washing up facilities. Sit, eat and socialise in the old barn, with free wifi, charging lockers, freezer. At weekends the Philpin Snack bar is open for cooked breakfasts, hot and cold snacks and drinks, ice creams, chocolates etc, on other days there are vending machines in the barn. Find out more here
This site is beautiful with the mown grass, woodland and stream running next to the site. There is also a 'discreet' adventure playground (fun for kids and adults ;) on the other side of the stream. We managed to get parking even arriving on fri evening and there is a short but steep walk down to where you can pitch. The toilets and shower are near the car park too - so this site isn't really suitable for anyone with mobility difficulties. There was only one shower which is fairly basic tho clean, free and warm enough. There are taps near the pitch site too. Most of the site is flat. Good value for money!
There was a friendly no nonsense_Yorkshire warden who was helpful and dealt with any issues arising on the site well - as it is local council land there can be day visitors to the site as well as campers - as we were there for a hot weekend there was a gang who turned up with tinnies, 'playful' kids and music - the warden was very diplomatic in this situation!
We walked to Nelson to one of the pubs - tho I think there is one closer. There didn't seem to be any shops within walking distance and prob at least 15 mins drive away but we arrived well stocked for weekend so no prob.
As it is next to the woods and stream there were quite a few midges in the evening and other insects - this was the only real downside to the location and our stay.
I loved this site, absolutely stunning location, friendly warden, adequate facilities. The best thing about it is that you can't have cars on site, yes lugging your stuff back up the hill is pain but worth it, no car doors slamming, no caravans, no annoying car radio's and loads of room!
I agree there should be some sort of recycling system & take repellent in midge season, they were pretty bad but didn't spoil the experience.
The car park is a bit of a squeeze but it stops the site from getting overcrowded.
I was very impressed when I stayed here. The campsite had a very relaxed and welcoming feel and the warden was extremely helpful. The site itself was very pretty and waking up to the birds and sound of running water was lovely. The stream running through campsite was a lovely surprise that I wasn't expecting but it does mean that small children have to be closely watched. The hill down to the campsite was very steep but seemed do-able for all the campers that stayed. Footwear is a must when climbing the hill, especially during the night as the slugs love the campsite as much as the campers do! The facilities were basic but clean and in keeping with the farm and there was never a queue for the one shower. The adventure playground was great but there was no slide or swing. The surrounding woods were a joy to explore and would be very exciting to children.
We chose to drive into Hebden Bridge for our groceries which was only about a 10 minute drive though beautiful countryside. As a small town, Hebden Bridge has everything that you want. There are interesting and quirky little shops, there is a range of places to buy groceries from and places to eat and there is even a camping and walking shop if you have forgotten to bring anything with you on holiday.
I have to add that the negative points I have mentioned are purely there as constructive criticism and that none of these points detracted from our enjoyment of our holiday and we will definitely be visiting this campsite again with our 3 year old boy in toe. Oh, and if you meet the donkey that lives just round the corner from the campsite, say hi from me.
My first visit with a group of women friends was a very enjoyable one. The staff were fabulous very helpful and friendly. The location was stunning with lovely walks. The facilities were clean and fitting.
The access to the site maybe a problem for people with mobility issues but I found it to be more accessible than expected. The walk back up the hill with tent etc was a little tough but manageable in stages.
The midges too were less of a problem than expected.
I would have like to see signs encouraging campers to take home rubbish that can be recycled as the site does not recycle waste.
Also the site has a minimum noise policy after 10pm which is great but I would urge them to include a no music rule after 10pm as part of this. A group set up camp next to us and had a radio playing constantly and in to the small hours one night. They kept it very low but it was not possible to sleep through the bass beat.A continual duff duff duff! Incorporating no music in to this rule would stop this kind of infringement so fingers crossed for next time.
I would stay again and highly recommend the site to people who like a more natural camping experience.
Stayed with a group of friends so 4 tents in all 8 adults and 9 children all under 8 yrs.
We had recce'd the site in advance so were aware of the steep hill from car park to tent space - be warned it is steep and if you an everything inc. The kitchen sink camper you will make many trips up and down the hill!
The weather was glorious, arrived at about 5.30pm on Friday evening and had a good choice of pitches. There were other families and a school group but there is so much space and such a small car park that the site isn't at all crowded.
The kids had a great time, the stream is very safe, tadpole pond a real hit so take your nets. Our older children went off and had Enid Blyton style adventures in the woods, they packed up a picnic on Saturday and took themselves to 'Adventure Rock' - a large rock they had found in the woods. Stepping Stones lead to a playground and our 4 yr old had no problems negotiating them.
The Warden is very friendly and helpful, the site is clean and well looked after. As others have mentioned the toilets are at the top of the hill so it is a trek. There is one shower which works very well.
Had a walk up through the woods and across fields to the local pub on Saturday pm. Pub OK and serves Timothy Taylor - the walk in lovely weather was fantastic. Short but with 9 children in tow just about perfect.
You can BBQ on the flagstones dotted around, there are plenty of picnic tables so don't bother with taking a table, a great idea and one I think more campsites should provide.
In summary the site is in a beautiful location, it is safe, friendly and one for the kids and adults alike. The steep hill is a drawback and one that would put me off returning regularly. There are a lot of midges and other flying creatures in the evening so do take repellent.
Given that you can't book I would return but with half the kit and only if the weather forecast was good - perhaps a site for a spontaneous trip?
