I stayed at this site after all the heavy rain and floods (silverstone weekend) so I called ahead to make sure things were ok and was told that some pitches were wet but it should be ok.
It was. There were a few pitches out of use but I was shown to to the driest part of the site and asked to take my pick. Well tended grass and overall the site was in great condition bearing in mind what had gone on a few days before. The staff were certainly taking care of the site
As you would expect for a CCC site clean facilities friendly wardens and a nice quiet site.
Chipping Norton is a typical small market town about 5 min by car with a couple of small supermarkets, and a good selection of restaurants / cafes pubs and shops.
I see there have been a couple of comments on road noise. I love a really quiet site but didn't find it a problem. Yes the roads were a little busy in the morning and around early evening but nothing that I really noticed.
Over all a rather disappointing weekend. We've been on a few sites in different locations and to be honest this was by far the worst site yet.
I booked for a small family group and we were placed in the most inconvenient place possible by the road which meant we had to be side by side as opposed to in a group, there was ample space for us to gather but we had to pitch where we were told. If we had not protested we would have been split up even though we had booked as a group.
The road which ran past our tent was not really a problem until you factor in the children in our group had to cross it to get to he play area and guests to the site often went far too fast for the road.
Add to this the abundance of rules and regulations(a whole booklet)including the toilets/showers are closed from 9:30 till 12 am, pot washing not allowed after 11pm (why would you), children not allowed on the park past a certain time, to be constantly reminded of these rules before we broke them was just too much for a simple weekend get away with the family. Surely common sense should have a chance to prevail
The staff were overbearing and constantly reminded us of the rules, which were made clear in the booklet. We were made up of a small family group but it felt as if they were nervous that we would become wild and there fore they felt to check on us constantly.
Also they charged us per tent plus per person which means our group could have stayed in a B&B/Hotel for cheaper, needless to say it was excessive!
In short I would not stay here again for any reason.
Helpful staff and handy shop on site for basics and bits and pieces and answers on visiting local attractions of which there are many.
It's possible to walk to Chipping Norton [or 'Chippy' as it's known locally] though the first few hundred yards are without a verge path so one has to watch out for the traffic especially at rush hours.
There's a bus service that picks up right outside the site which is very handy.
Slightly further afield for sightseeing are Blenheim Palace, Oxford &c.
So for an excellent reasonably priced base for setting out for the lovely cotswolds this site can't be beaten.
What a great place to camp for exploring the Cotswolds! Bourton On The Water is only a few mins drive away, and very picturesque. Has plenty of tea rooms and gift shops along with a model village, motor and toy museum and Birdland. Really need to allow at least two days to appreciate all it has to offer.
If Real Ale is your 'thing' then Wychwood and Hook Norton breweries are not that far away, although if you want a tour, then you will need to book in advance.
The Rollright Stones are also a nice way to spend an afternoon. A series of ancient standing stones which are full of myths and legends - Just don't expect anything on the scale of Stonehenge!
Fly fishing at the nearby Salford Trout Lakes was great fun, and provided us with both dinner and breakfast.
As has been said Chipping Norton has plenty of free parking and lots of pubs. I can recommend 'Bitter and Twisted' for its selection of local lager, well worth a go.
Now onto the site. Generally up to the usual club standards with helpful knowledgable staff, nicely cut grass and spotlessly clean toilet/shower facilities.
Road noise has been mentioned by others, but it never caused us a problem at all during the night. However, the site is not all that far from Brieze Norton, and they use a field across the road to practice night time landings! Two of the four nights we stayed, we were woken around 2. 30am to the sound of helicopters overhead. We were only informed of the possibility of this happening once we were pitched, and although it didn't cause us a real problem, it is worth knowing.
Childrens play area is on the small side, and could do with somewhere to kick a ball, throw a frisbee etc, but that said, it kept our three year old happy :)
Would go back to this site without hesitation, as there is so much more to see and do in the area.
We stayed here for a long weekend with some friends so we asked for 2 pitches together which the staff did for us without issue.
The site is well located with good access to Chipping Norton and plenty of other villages and attractions. We paid a visit to to the Cotswold Wildlife Park which was absolutely outstanding and well worth a visit.
The site itself is quite small, nicely laid out and has been mentioned already is a little bit hilly in some places but not too bad. The staff were friendly enough and seemed to work hard to keep the site clean and tidy.
The (3) showers are adequate but at times can be busy if the site is full. Toilets etc are clean. There is also a laundry facility which is handy for those on longer stays which houses a commercial washing machine and dryer. There is also an iron and ironing board in the laundry room.
Now for some negatives.
The site is very close to the very busy A361 and our pitches were only metres from the road separated only by a low wall and some trees.
There are signs along the A361 identifying it as a dangerous road and prone to accidents. At one stage I thought a car would be coming through the wall (There are signs of someone having recently done so) and into the campsite it sounded so close and was definitely too fast. There were lots of very noisy motorbikes passing at all times of the day and night which was also very annoying.
Our pitches were close to the toilet and shower block and sadly close to the Cess Pit which very much ruined our stay at this site. The smell was just awful, wafting around the site. I mentioned it to the management on site who didn't seem to be too sure on what if anything they could do other than report it to someone else. We were also kept awake by the late night use of the hand dryers in the toilet block.
Others appear to highly rate the Fish & Chip service at the site however my thoughts are yes it's handy and a good idea, but the quality was slightly less than average.
The site doesn't really have facilities for young children, predominately a family shower or wash room. There is a play park but it is limited to two swings and a slide which at times becomes crowded.
In summary, a nice site but avoid the pitches in the lower green near the toilets at all costs.
With direct access to the River Thames, this family-friendly spot is perfect for boaters and walkers alike. Tourers, tents, motorhomes and RVs welcome. Grass electric, hard-standing and premium multi-service and RV pitches available. Spacious, modern, heated shower blocks with free hot water, hairdryers and shaving points. There is also a laundrette, park shop, disabled facilities, a book swap library, riverside picnic grounds, slipway, fishing in season, Premium WiFi, childrens playground, nature trail, football goals and outdoor table tennis table. A fantastic base for visiting Henley, Windsor, Legoland and more! A serene oasis nestled in the beautiful countryside at the base of the Chiltern Hills, just a stone`s throw from the charming Henley-on-Thames. Find out more here
This was our first visit to this camp site. It is a very well maintained site and the people who ran it were extremely friendly and welcoming. On arrival, they had selected a secluded corner plot for us to set up a large 6 berth tent and a day tent, which was very nice in terms of the amount of space we had.
Unfortunately, there was a sting in the tail, which was the proximity to the main road, which was at times very noisy, and spoiled the otherwise tranquil nature of the site.
The location of the site itself was a little way outside Chipping Norton, which can be reached by footpath without any real difficulty, but for those who prefer to save their shoe leather for shopping, there is a bus that takes you from the camp site into the town centre in about 10 mins.
I thought we might struggle to fill our day in Chipping Norton, but in actual fact, there were enough pubs to keep us boys happy and enough boutique style shops to keep the girls happy too for the whole day.
We bought some steak at the local butchers, which are sourced from the Orkneys. A treat not to be missed if you like steak. They were wonderful on the Barbecue later on.
So in conclusion, would we go back? Yes, but only if the pitch was well away from the busy road at the top end of the site.
Visited the site for 1 night enroute to RIAT 2011. Very helpful staff, as we had to leave early morning before the gate opens we were located conveniently close to car park area.
Site in very good condition, clean, nice grass, good playground area for children, waste segregation, good information about surrounding countryside.
Toilet block looked older but all painted and clean. As the site is situated in triangle between 2 roads some noise can be heard at time but roads are not very busy and we never woke up at night.
We stayed during a busy weekend. Some pitches slope slightly but most are level. Even though it was very busy we did not feel cramped and the layout is pleasant. There are couple of sites which are very shaded under trees and we moved after a couple of days but even though theyr were very busy the staff did everything to help us out and were very friendly.
The facilities were clean and well maintained.
We have a dog that needs a lot of exercise. There is a very short walk through the woods on site but just across the main road there is a bridle path that goes for a couple of miles which gave plenty of exercise.
Very relaxed atmosphere and an ideal site for chilling out.
The shop sells a few basics but there is a fish and chip van on a Saturday evening and you can order croissants and wonderful fresh French sticks and the newspapers at the weekends.
Since Buying our 1st Caravan at the beginning of July it feels like we've been away every Weekend. This is the last July review honestly!
This was a last minute booking after a terrible experience at a Pub site the night before (Norman Knight CL). This might cost double the fee of Pub with Camping but it's worth it:
Spacious, Friendly and Spotless.
As a result of this site we have now booked two more Camping and Caravan Club sites and can't wait.
The site is in an excellent location for visiting many of the 'honey pots' in the Cotswolds such and Stow on the Wold, Burford etc.
It is a very easy walk of about 20 minutes into Chipping Norton itself where there are numerous shops, pubs, cafes etc.
The site managers were pleasant and helpful. The toilet block was very clean and warm but very much overdue a refurbishment and if you are tall the shower heads are very low-not a problem for me!
Road noise was minimal I thought and we were never disturbed at night. Pitches are adequate if a little close.
