Great basic facilities camping, on a very slight incline with a few level areas -regularly cleaned toilets & metered shower (2 x 20p for 6 mins), owners always available. The farm dogs only bark as visitors arrive & are very well trained, and as people are allowed to bring their own dogs, previous reviewers may've been complaining about others. There is a plentiful supply of free firewood -the owner will tell you kindly that you may use it 'at your own risk'.
You'll be pitched a narrow field away from the main road, but I didn't find it noisy.
Because of where it is, bring everything else that you need (unless you're happy to drive the short distance to Machynlleth) & you'll enjoy your stay.
Superb location, the caravan part of the site has nice flat pitches, with hard standings and electric hook ups, with the pitches being next to the river. We weren't camping, however the tent field looked to be quite sloping. Five minute walk down the road to the local pub / hotel, and the Cadair Idris car park.
Please note that the site is just off the A487 just north of Minnford, not off the B road south of Minnford - web site is a mile out!
Toilet & shower facilities are basic, but clean and adequate. No children's facilities. Friendly owner came around regularly to make sure that everyone was OK.
Massive downside however - barking dogs! It would have been a lovely peaceful site, other than the incessant barking dogs from the farm house from 5.30 am til late at night. They really were barking most of the time!
This could be a fabulous site, other than the barking dogs at the farm, which wrecked it for us, god help the people in tents! We won't bother going back to this site, unless the dogs have been got rid of!
Just got the van and this is only the second site we've visited so can't do any comparisons. We know the area well- great for walks. The popular walk up to Cader Idris is really close to the site. If you want to walk on the flat try the precipice walk - it's not as bad as it sounds and views are great over Barmouth estuary and across to Cader. Good fishing in the lake there. The campsite facilities we found basic but clean. Access easy and pitches flat. The owners were friendly and helpful. £14 per night for van and two adults with hook up. We had a lot of rain and a gale but the pitch didn't get too muddy and our awning stayed put. We were told it was a sheltered spot. There is a stream running by the caravan/camper pitches which was very full while we were there and I found the sound of rushing water irritating when trying to sleep. Also farm dogs barked quite a lot but not at night. All things considered it was more than OK and we would stay again if it ever stops raining.
A friendly, somewhat casual site with plenty of level pitches with hookups for camper vans & caravans alongside a stream. Located at the head of the picturesque valley just off the main road and several minutes drive from the nearest shop or town.
The tent field was strangely, very boggy for our arrival and a few needed a tractor to tow them out of the mire. I only just managed with a helpful push from a fellow camper. I say strangely as the field is quite sloping, it wasn't raining and others sites appeared to have less mud.
The site is run by 3 generations of the family. Grandfather; parking by the gate and collecting the money (£5pppn for us at least) Father often seen cleaning the rather basic toilet hut and son cheerfully odd jobbing (tractor tows etc).
GOOD POINTS -the relaxed pitch anywhere attitude,
The camp fire wood provided,
Chatty friendly welcome,
Location near to CADIR IDRIS car park
And 1 Pub.
1 shower and 1 hot water shower over sink at 20p a go!
BAD POINTS - The almost continuous noise from the 2 farm dogs yapping for 18-20 hours often setting off the campers' dogs in a cacophony added to by the Lowing of the(Oft)herd!
No hot water tap, soap dispensers or hand dryers in the toilet hut (a recipe for bad hygiene or even food poisoning?)
No Washing up area- an outside sink would do!
The A road directly above the site was busy early until quite late.
We enjoyed the weekend and its relaxed attitude, unfortunately so did some raucous groups alongside so we'll try some others in the region next time!
We stayed here for the August bank holiday so it was about as busy as I can image the site getting. Even so we had plenty of space in the overflow field. The main field looked to be more congested but no worse than any other site on a bank holiday.
The facilities are quite basic – a single coin operated shower in the gents and one in the ladies. The only washing-up sink is in the ladies and someone did take offence at me being in there washing up. Though old and basic the facilities are kept clean by the friendly owner who seemed to be there constantly – replacing toilet paper and chatting to folk. Maybe we were showering at strange times but we never needed to queue.
The best thing about this site is that you are allowed to have campfires, which makes having your dinner and sitting out at night so much nicer.
There is a pub a couple of minutes walk from the site (which we didn’t visit) but there is nothing else in short walking distance. The nearest shop of any kind is a petrol station about a fifteen minute drive away.
The location is excellent – beautiful scenery and very well placed for walking on Cader Idris.
We will definitely be going back. Not just because the site is nice but because Cader Idris was so much quieter than Snowdonia on a bank holiday weekend.
Glanllyn is situated on the shore of Lake Bala in Wales. 16 acres of natural parkland and spectacular views of nearby hills and mountains make it an idyllic spot to pitch a caravan, motorhome, tent or campervan with level grass or hardstanding pitches. For water sports enthusiasts there is a private shingle beach with easy launching area for windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, fishing and paddle boarding. Camp shop, wifi, laundrette, excellent heated toilet & shower facilities. The market town of Bala is 3 miles away with plenty of small shops, pubs & retaurants, cinema and a leisure centre. We visited this site last weekend and really enjoyed our stay. It is a good level site with basic facilities but no shops within walking distance so if you are looking for an away from it all site, this is the one for you. It is a working farm with all the noises and smells that go along with it but that's part of the experience. The site is really dog friendly with lots of walks. The farmer is a friendly chap who comes around at least twice a day to check all is ok and have a chat. There is a nice inn just a five minute walk away who will serve meals outside if you have dog's with another 45 minute walk along a safe footpath you takes you to the far side of the Tal-y-Llyn Lake where you will find a great hotel with good food called Tynycoed, it's the big white hotel you really can't miss it as there are only two there, from personal experience I would not recommend the second hotel as the service and food was a bit rushed and not the best. We would recommend this site and will be visiting again soon.
A lovely location, perfect for the classic Cader Idris circuit - the route starts 5 minutes from the site. Reminded me a bit of Great Landgale in the Lakes with the cliffs and the bulk of Cader Idris towering over the site. Reasonably quiet although farm dogs, the relative proximity of the A487 (it's about 300 yards away) and the RAF mean that you're not quite away from it all.
Cwmrhwyddfor is a pretty, well maintained site. The toilet block is small, basic and a bit ugly but it is clean. It could do with some updating, especially as there is no washing up facilities in the gents (this is the 21st Century after all!) and the 20p meter in each of the single showers is just plain mean - you get 4 minutes at best.
The owners father makes his way around the site collecting monies morning, noon and night. He's a friendly old chap and is an expert at the 2 times table (£2 per car, person and tent per night).
Camp fires are OK and firewood is provided. This is a big plus as a fire is a must for keeping the midges away at this time of year, although we didn't find them too much of a problem.
There are some eating and drinking places within walking distance - a hotel just 5 minutes down the road and a couple of lovely inns at the far side of Llyn Mwyngil which is a pleasant 45 minute walk down the lakeside. Shopping is Dolgellau which is a 15-20 minute drive.
We camped out here in August. The campsite is located on a working farm. The views from the 'tent field' are breath taking. Its surrounded by rolling hills on one side, and Cader Idris Mountain on the other. Small fires are allowed, although I'd recommend bringing your own firewood, otherwise you'll spend half the night trying to find damp twigs to burn!
May 2005 We went to this site after being let down by another in the area. The site has basic facilities, 1 shower for men 1 for women and all hot water is charged at 20p. However the fantastic views and freindly and helpful owner more than make up for this. We also did't find the facilities a problem and the site was quite ful whilst we were there. It is quite isolated (shops are 10 miles away) but is ideal if you want to stay somewhere quiet. It's also easy to get to just of the main Machynlleth to Dolgellau road. It is alos very Dog friendly with a nice pub just up the road, that will serve meals outside for people with dogs.
February 2005 After Desperately needing a break at the end of Feb, me and my girlfriend on a budget decided we were going camping, this is one of the few camp sites available, After getting lost on the way there (camp site is in middle of nowhere) we finally arrived, we drove on to the field which has small tarmac road, I promptly got the mini stuck, a total 2 times I decided it was best to keep car on tarmac, the field was extremely boggy. In general the area in which the camp site is located is VERY nice and is ideal if you are a walker or a nature fan, the campsite permits camp fires, BUT the facilities on the site are BASIC to say the least, when we were there was no showers working, no hot water and the toilets were not working for 4 hours, there was no rubbish facilities. I really wouldn’t recommend this camp site unless you are a walker there are lots better for the money and the facilities aren’t exactly top notch, there was also a disagreement in the rates per night to what we were advised on the phone and when we got there, farmer happy enough to take your money and then not provide the facilities promised, I will definately not be going back to this camp site.
