August 2004 Beautiful location at the foot of the mountains. This site would appeal to walkers and those with an appreciation for the great outdoors. Facilities are basic. Big field for tents with plenty of space. Lacked any formal security, but sensed the owners had a pretty good idea of comings and goings and wouldn't miss much. I guess this site would never be crowded even in high season as there are many more with better facilities nearby. Well worth a stay though for the views alone. Cost us £10 a night for a tent 2 adults and 2 young children.
17th May - 20th May 2004 What a fantastic site..... Welcomed with warmth which stayed throughout my stay. Its on a slight slope, but nothing too bad. I was charged £2 per person, £2 per tent but that would probably go up during peak season, still, I think its well worth it if it does. The whole site is kept immaculate. Camp fires allowed, dogs allowed. Toilets are basic as is the shower, but its all kept very clean.
The site is on a working farm, but we were not bothered at all by any one. On arrival just drive into the site, pitch your tent and the owner will come and see you in the morning, so thats handy for those turning up later in the day!! There were only 2 other tents on the site when I visited, but I'm sure it would be a lot busier during peak season as it is a 5 min walk of the car park at the foot of Cader Idris, when during peak season I'm sure there would be a queue for the shower.
This site is on the A487 Dolgellau to Machynlleth road and clearly marked. The ONLY bad thing for me was the amount of low flying jets roaring down the valley, but hey, its not the owner fault and Air Force have gotta practice somewhere, It's not like Heathrow, but one came down the valley at about 21:45hrs and I nearly spilt my tea, eerrrr, I mean beer. But I think my opinion would be bias as I'm ex Air Force and had enough of jets !!!! They do look good when you look down at them from Cader idris, camcorders at the ready if you like that sort of thing.I can't recomend this site enough. *****
August 2003 This is a smallish site on the main A487 Dolgellau to Machynlleth road. The site itself is set below the level of the road and is divided into two sections, the lower section is for touring caravans and the upper for tents. The two sections are divided by a bank covered with a row of trees. The tent site is a little uneven but not impossible to pitch even a large tent (and ours is large!). There are mountains either side of the site which is a wonderful sight to wake up to. Campfires are permitted.
The facilities are a little basic, consisting of a breeze block building with outside taps for water, and within, two toilets and a shower each, two washbasins (cold water only) and a Belfast style sink for washing dishes and clothing (hot water). There is no draining board. I assume the gents' facilities are the same. However, the facilities are kept clean and toilet paper always available. You have to pay 20p for hot water and 20p for a shower, which is operated via a meter. If you put in 40p you can have a reasonable shower, in fact it was a little bit too long and I ended up turning it off myself. There are no hairdryers or hand dryers and you have to bring your own soap for hand washing.
We paid a total of £12 for two nights, which is very reasonable. £2 for the tent and £2 for each adult. We didn't pay for our son as he's three but I don't know what the age limit is before children get charged. The friends we were with paid more, although they were also two adults with a three year old daughter. They brought along two small tents and were charged £2 for each tent. I actually think we should have been charged more because our large tent took up considerably more space than their two small ones, but that's how they charge and that's it. The owners of the site are in their sixties (or possibly seventies!) and spent a lot of time walking round the camp site at various times of the day to check that people who are there have paid, but also to chat to customers and get to know them. First thing in the morning we had a visit from the owner requesting our tickets (you get one for each night) but as he comes around 8.30 it's as well to make sure you're up or I'm told that he will get you up! Don't know how true that is, but if he's running a business I suppose he wants to make sure he's not being ripped off. You have to be understanding about these things, I have heard of lots of cases of people camping on farm sites and disappearing without paying.
We enjoyed staying at this site but would really only use it as a second choice as we have been spoilt by our usual site in Tywyn, who don't mind if you de-camp at 5.00 in the evening. I have a feeling that if we did that at Cwmrhwyddfor we would be charged another night. The only thing that we really didn't like was the abundance of midges. We were going to camp by the trees where it's flatter but got attacked by swarms of the little blighters, so quickly moved (with a half erected tent) to the other side where there weren't quite so many. The toilets were also full of midges, day and night, and we did get bitten. However, as they are prolific at this time of year wherever you go, I am not really put off by this. We wouldn't stay for more than a weekend at this site as the facilities are a little basic for longer stays. There is only one shower each which means you sometimes have to queue, and the one sink with hot water is not adequate for large amounts of washing up as there is nowhere to drain anything, unless you pile it up in a neighbouring sink.
We would go again for definite, for the views are stunning and it's nice and quiet. But for those who like a lively site and top-notch facilities, look elsewhere.
