We chose this site after reading reviews on here and were not disappointed. It has a main area for camping with a large grassed area in the middle for children to play etc and also a field at the back where we chose to camp.
Children (and adults!) loved feeding the cows in the evening and watching them being milked. We saw a calf being born and all were welcome to be in the shed watching this event. It was great to be involved and educational for the children.
There were also plenty of other animals to visit morning and night. The facilities were good - showers were big enough to take more than one child in with you - what a bonus!
Owners were lovely people and had time to talk even though they were busy running a farm. John has a great collection of old milk bottle with advertisements on and is grateful for any more for the collection if you have some! Good value for money and we had a great time there.
Another wonderful visit to this site. This time with 2 15 yr olds in tow. Even they were never bored, there is plenty to look at ( piglets born on arrival day, calf born during the week, lovely walk to the river).
The site owners remembered us from the previous year and gave us a friendly welcome. The pitch was again excellent and the showers were clean and powerful.
Sausages and cheese are now on sale along with fresh eggs.
The site is in an excellent position for both the north and south coast of Devon and we spent 2 glorious days on the beach at Saunton sands, a day at Buckfast otters (well worth the trip) and a visit to Dartington Glass.
After finding the site on this website the description, reviews, and price all seemed too good to be true. However, it is all true! We were welcomed and shown to our pitch (given a choice but advised to choose the one sheltered from the wind as it was a windy day). The field is in a slight hill but it is not noticeable. With a massive playing area in the middle it meant the children were able to play but always be in view. It also meant that even when 'full' there was plenty of space remaining.
The farmer and his daughter seemed to always have a stream of children following them and helping out - they seemed to never tire and always happy and good with the children. Hard to believe they were just getting on with their day-to-day farm jobs and allowing the children to help so much. Our children were shy and so did not don the overalls and help with the farm jobs, but they did love watching the cows being milked and were brave enough to bottle feed lambs a couple of times.
The site does not have a lot of toilets or showers (for gents there was two toilets and one shower) and yet I never had to wait at all, and I never saw queues from the woman's block either. The toilets and showers were both very clean and well looked after. Save up your 10pence and 20pence for the showers. £1 will give you long enough shower for yourself and two children!
For what I see as a very cheap campsite, it has first class toilets/showers, very friendly owners and is certainly a site we will be going back to. Either use as a base for day trips or if you have less shy children you could probably spend all day chilling out by the tent while the children helped on the farm.
We have just been on our second visit and have booked to go back later in the year as we love it here! We have 2 children (7 and 12) who absolutely love being on the farm and spending so much time with the animals.
They help milk the cows in the morning and evening and it takes around 2 1/2 hours! Also, there are currently lambs that need to be fed during the day as well. The kids don't have to help the whole time, but I can't drag mine away! However, please remember that they will need some dirty clothes / overalls as they will get covered in cow mess.
However, having said that it is a proper working farm, the actual camp-site is very clean and well laid out. The pitches are lovely and big and in the top field there is a large area in the middle for the kids to play together. In the lower field there is no designated play area but it is a massive field and only a few tents at one end of it.
The facilities are very well maintained and the washing up area which is under cover and has free hot water is an absolute god send. The showers are amazing and well worth the 20p for each 2 mins.
We also take our 2 dogs and there are several fields that belong to the farm that you are allowed to let your dog off the lead in. Obviously on the farm you have to keep them on the lead as the chickens are freely walking the camp-site!
The setting is rural, but only 9 miles to Tiverton where there is a large Tesco as well as it being a lovely town to go round. Also about a mile down the road from the farm there is a village which has a small shop for basics and a pub.
I would highly recommend this camp-site for families. It is so friendly and lovely place to be.
Our family have just come home from a 3-night stay at Middlewick Farm this Bank Holiday weekend and had a fantastic time. It was great fun for the children and my daughter aged 7 loved stroking Princess, Kelsie and Bounty the calves, feeding and stroking the lambs and visiting the piglets.
My son aged 9 enjoyed running down the field to the 'Big Tree' with his friends and all the children we were with in our party loved the freedom of the space on the farm and roamed around happily.
We took the children's bikes and they were able to ride around the fields and also up to the toilet block which was quite a walk! Although there were not a huge number of toilets, we never waited long and they were kept very clean.
The farmer was very helpful and friendly as was his wife. It was interesting to stay on a working farm and the site was really relaxed and quiet.
We would like to stay at Middlewick Farm again sometime and would recommend to others, particularly with younger children. There is lots of space to explore as well as a large playing field with football goal and space for other games.
The views are amazing and the location feels remote but is not far from the nearest town of Tiverton and pretty villages such as Bickleigh. We were able to buy fresh farm eggs for breakfast which the children enjoyed and the farmer was pretty relaxed about what time we left the site on our departure day. Very good value for money at £12 a night for a tent, 2 adults and 2 children.
Just returned from West Middlewick Farm. We had a fabulous 4 night break. We have never stayed on a working farm before and we were pleasantly surprised. A warm welcome, large pitch and relaxed atmosphere all made for a fantastic campsite.
The facilities were good with easy access to electric and water. The toilets and showers were kept clean and we never had to queue.
The location of the farm is great. Far enough out to give the impression of being 'in the middle of no where', but only 8 miles from the town of Tiverton, which has everything you might need (including a large Morrisons supermarket).
Easy access to Exmoor and the North Devon coastline, which is well worth a visit - particularly Lynton/Lynmouth. Also, the South Devon coast is less than an hour's drive away.
There were at least 3 pubs within a couple of miles and the local village, just a mile away has a couple of small shops for essential items.
We would definitely return to West Middlewick Farm to enjoy another fabulous holiday!
We stayed here as part of a group over August Bank Holiday and were in Mary's field which is rustic camping at its best - great views, slightly sloping but not too bad. The main field also looked really nice with lovely big pitches.
Great for walking. Toilets and showers were always clean - personally we are happy to pay for our showers if they are hot and water gushes out which it does.
We did not see the children expect at meal times - they adored the animals and the egg collecting! The farmer is very patient! A great site for all the family. Highly recommended.
Camped here in August on a wet and windy week. We were shown to our pitch and welcomed. Site is in a lovely rural location, 1 hour to either North or South Devon coast. Milking and feeding happens at 8.30 and 5.30 every day and children (of all ages) are encouraged to help. Eggs can be collected at any time.
Showers are limited and my son had to queue a couple of times, but I only queued once. They are clean and large with brilliant hot water and 2 mins is fine as it bursts out. Hooks and mops are now provided in the showers for when it is really muddy. (It is after all a working farm). It would be useful if the disabled shower was made unisex as it was often not being used when the others were full.
The site is really friendly and well cared for and maintained, even down to Johns 80 yr old mum helping out when children kick stones into the drains. Free hot water is provided for washing up but not in the mens sinks (problem is solved by taking a jug or bowl with you and carrying to the mens washroom). A fridge is available for freezing icepacks and a washing machine and tumble dryer. A pool table is available for teens to use.
My 14yr old son and myself found this to be a lovely, relaxing site with everything we needed, we will hopefully return next year.
We stayed here for the first two weeks of the school holidays and we made a fantastic choice !
We have two children aged 3 and 10 and our 10 year old daughter thoroughly enjoyed life on the farm to the point where we had tears from her if we wanted to venture out for the day! she was up early every morning to help with the cows or feeding the lambs, collecting eggs etc.
The site had lovely views and is an ideal location for touring Devon and Somerset, we visited tiverton (which is where the local supermarkets are) we had days out to minehead, weston-super-mare, exeter, torquay, paignton, plymouth (by train, very cheap)! dulverton, exmoor via jeep safari and managed to see wild red deer and wild exmoor ponies which the kids loved! there's a local swimming pool in tiverton where we went one day when it rained.
Theres a local horse riding centre (Mount Pleasant) which is a five minute drive away, my daughter went there twice and thoroughly enjoyed each time.
The site itself was clean, the showers are 20p for women and 10p for men which we felt was reasonable.
My daughter brought a baby rabbit home with her which is now very much a part of the family !
Overall a lovely site and we will definitely return at some point in the future.
John, jo and their children were always very pleasant and had lots of time for the children.
Well, so many of the previous reviews are true. Even the odd negative view has it's place. So I am going to try and give my balanced view of how we found the farm when we stayed a few nights en-route to Cornwall.
The farm is certainly well and truly in the heart of the countryside. The close-by village of Nomansland is very aptly named. Beautiful views. The farmer, John, was extremely friendly and easy going. The field was great for the kids to play, with a football pitch in the middle. The new ladies shower block was nice, with good hot water. The mens is due for an update, but as I invariably had a youngster in tow, I went in the family shower which was in the new block. The showers were always clean, however, being a working farm, it is possible to walk 'muck' into the shower with you, so the previous suggestion of a mop to clean up would be good.
There were quite a few lovely baby animals there when we went. Baby pigs, lambs, calves, kittens, rabbits. Chickens everywhere! Our children enjoyed helping at milking time when all the cows came in. But yes, as a previous poster said, there was lots of muck too, and mucky smells. I probably went with an overly romantic image of what it was going to be like. The animals aren't in a specially created children's petting area. They are in farm buildings, and yes, there is muck around, so wellies and old clothes are the order of the day to visit the animals. But to be fair, this really is a working farm, not a campsite that has imported animals to entertain the children. So be prepared to get as mucky as you want. We saw children getting stuck into everything, even helping to paint the old farm trailers, and they were loving it.
We chatted to other campers who were using it as a base for their holidays. I was surprised to find the west coast of Devon, and even the south coast, only about an hours drive, so ideal really.
So, to sum up: Great countryside location. Loads of animals. John is happy for the children (and adults) to join in all the farms activities. A climbing frame or two would be nice for the children. But maybe don't go in rose tinted spectacles as I did. This really is a working farm. Go prepared with wellies, a change of clothes, a big bag to keep your wellies in, because they will get 'mucky', and enjoy the atmosphere and the smells of the farm.
This is one of only two farms I found with so many animals, and I doubt you would be allowed to join in so much at others. So that combined with the lovely location and excellent nightly rates, makes West Middlewick a unique experience, and I would consider pitching there if we passed through again. Just be prepared!.It is a working farm! Great!
