Came across the site via UKCampsite.co.uk, after reading a review thought we would give it a try, was a bank holiday weekend the site owner was very helpful, quite hard to find (we googled it first) as there is no sign from the main road and the farm sign up the lane is small and we nearly missed it, access is very thin lane and steep incline onto site, upon arrival we had to phone again(as no one was around (I'm guessing busy due to being a working farm) after a couple of min's warden was over and had us levelled up and hooked up, (we didn't even ask :)) we paid £16 per night which was for 2 adults 3 kids(kids were free), and hook up, although there was very little for kids to do ON site. Even has free washer/dryer/microwaves and 20p for a shower :) AND only 5mins from the beach(walking)and a few min's into Whitby via car, , will defo be back and will certainly recommend to friends and other sites, very good cheap basic site, BUT don't expect the RITZ :)
We were recommended this site by the owners of our normal site in Whitby as they were full. A caravan site with a little advertised camping area, however word of mouth and obvious return visits meant it was still fairly busy. Its definitely a family site and there were loads of children all playing together in the centre of the field.
There was a family shower room which was free of charge. An evidently new facility was the wash up block with its 2 washing machines and tumble drier, and also the facility to freezer ice packs. For thoe with electronic gadgets there were recharging points that were secure (£5. 00 deposit).
To get to and from the site is a regular bus service from Whitby although its only a half hour walk from the town to the site. Many of the local takeaways deliver to High Straggleton as well.
I have just spent a week in the 'Country-Style' static caravan at High Straggleton, Whitby Folk Festival week to be exact, and I have already decided to book it for next year too.
The Country-Style caravan is set on its own away from the other fields - the caravan fields, the camping fields and the field with the other statics. Dog-friendly, it is ideal for a couple or a family. It is wonderful to have the luxury of the shower and flush toilet, Freesat TV, a real cooker and a full sized fridge-freezer. It really is luxury compared to my little tourer. You also have the added advantage of your own 'garden', a big field all to yourself.
High Straggleton Farm is situated halfway between Whitby and Sandsend. The site is owned by Derek and Maxine Atkinson, devoted dairy farmers and thoroughly nice people. They can always make time to talk about everything from cows to local history and back again. Derek and Joe, Maxine and Derek's son, are dairy farmers through and through and are always happy to show people around, explain the ins and outs of farming, or - if you prefer - you can go and wander around the farm yourself to see what goes on there. There are cats, cows and chickens on the site and if you love being in a genuine farm environment, this is definitely the place for you. We liked to watch the cows through the kitchen window, coming in to be milked and then going out again.
The site steward, Ian, is such a great help and will bend over backwards to accommodate every visitor whether you are in a static, a tourer or a tent. The welcome that will be extended to you is genuine and is also one of the things that will make you want to keep coming back.
If you like bowling-green lawns, fancy flower beds and 'please-do-not-walk-on-the-grass', this is not the place for you. High Straggleton is dog-friendly (dogs go free!), Kid-friendly (no pompous, silly rules - thus perfect for families) and more importantly, the Atkinsons don't tolerate disruptive behaviour or late night disturbances.
With Whitby a short walk away, the Sandsend beach a short stroll and the nearest shop (cost-cutter) a two minute drive or a ten-minute walk away, it is perfectly situated for anybody.
Finally, if you are a lover of nature, there's nothing more relaxing that watching 20+ swallows skimming across the ground catching insects for their young. You should also watch out for little owls, kestrels and sparrow hawks above the farm, and seals in the bay.
Made a phone call on bank holiday Sunday to stay for the night and this was a shock to say they had a space for my partner and myself to stay with our motorhome for the night. The staff were friendly and helpful and were happy to help. Shower block clean and tidy along with toilets and FREE use of washing machines x 2 and even a tumble dryer! Clean and tidy pot wash areas too.
Views are amazing and a nice steady walk into Whitby town and the beach is spot on.
Would definitely visit this site again (next week).
Stayed on this site a number of times now. Each stay has been as good as the other. Friendly and peaceful. Toilet block, always kept clean. Showers 20p. Close walk into Sandsend and to the beach. A working farm, staff are always helpful and obliging. Pubs nearby and in walking distance. A supermarket lidl very close to campsite in car. Short walk across field to beach and in to whitby. Time to take your tent down without having to be off site early like some other site departure times.
In the heart of Wharfedale, this beautiful site is terraced to give amazing views over spectacular countryside. Hardstanding pitches for caravans and motorhomes and grass pitches for tents, with optional electric hookup. Toast marshmallows around the fire pit! Come and say hello to their family of friendly resident alpacas.
Hot showers, toilets, laundry, washing up. Wifi, dog washing facilities and bike cleaning facilities. Large woodland area where kids can explore for hours. Small shop and morning coffee shop for barista made coffee, fresh pastries and hot chocolate. There are also luxury timber lodges with private patio, wood fired hot tub, fire pit with pizza oven and a picnic table. The perfect base for exploring the beauty of the Yorkshire Dales. We held a family camping trip for four days the site was packed, far too many units and tents for the very limited facilities if you'd not had a shower by 6·45 you would have to wait for ages. The site has beautiful sea views. The owner is very friendly and helpful and we will use this site again as we love the area, but not at such a busy time as there were so many people jammed in there was no where for children to play
Brilliant place to stay, was very surprised at the facilities, toilet block, always kept sparkling clean, washing up station with multiple sinks, two washing machines, a dryer and very cleverly thought out two microwaves! Safes are also available for you to use to charge mobile phones inside !
The view from our field was amazing straight at the sea, short walk to the beach. Just bear in mind this is still a working farm so it can be a bit noisy and a bit whiffy! But all in all a fabulous place to make base camp and very reasonably priced too. They were also really understanding when our prized pooch managed to escape and go wandering, as all dogs should be kept on lead at all times within the site. I think the only negative is there isn't much for children to do, but we went off site most days so it didn't really make much of a difference.
I came to this rustic camp site a few years ago when there was just a couple of small fields at the back with statics on and a dozen tents on the top field with breathtaking views over to the sea at Sandsend, the owners are always helpful and sorted out the hook up for us. The facilities were small but just about enough and the price was good. Last year we returned and there is a nice new block for washing up and they have added a new shower block. They really could do with some toilets lower down too near the new showers as the original block is quite a trek. Having said all this however we will not be returning as along with the new shower block the site has attracted probably about another 150 tents / motorhomes playing music / screaming kids / barking dogs / strange drunk man playing banjo. Such a shame.
Cheap and cheerful! The people who ran the site were very helpful and the prices were reasonable. The location was very much a working farm (with agricultural equipment etc. Next to the camping/caravan areas - famililes with young children would need to keep a close eye on them) but there were some very friendly farm cats and kittens too. There were sea views and the site was within walking distance (though quite a long walk) of both Sandsend and Whitby. The showers were fine, the toilets and washroom a little small and overstretched for this busy time of year. More bins would also have been good (they were overfull when we arrived) and a better indication of which were recycling/general rubbish bins. A few people seemed to have problems with items left in the communal areas being taken (one lady I spoke to had lost, I think, 6 freezer packs from the freezer)The moral of that story, I suspect, is don't leave things in the communal areas at busy times! But on the whole, good value for money.
Myself and friends have visited this campsite previously and loved it. It is situated within walking distance of both Whitby and Sandsend. It is very basic, with no luxuries, but the incredibly low rates reflect this. When we visited previously all dealing were with the farmers who run the farm (who, by the way, are lovely) but this has now changed and is managed by a man who races around on a snow master. There is now a small building for washing up which includes other amenities such as a microwave which is useful. Unfortunately it seemed to be surrounded by shirtless men keeping an eye on everything, which was a bit unnerving. Because it is not a large campsite, the family next to us were playing rounders and the ball keep hitting out tents, cars, and nearly us a number of times. The campsite should get some industrial wheelie bins as those provided were inadequate and the rubbish just built up in a mountain over our stay, with nobody from the campsite cleaning it up. This used to be our favourite campsite but after my recent visit myself and my friends will not be visiting again, not even with the low prices.
Just got back from a wonderful holiday at High Straggleton Farm.
And again we were warm welcomed by the owner and well helped to get the caravan good positioned.
This friendliness, free help, large pitch, stunning seaview, social contact with owner or staff, make us and many others coming back, year after year.
This year we were surprised:the new shower-block and the dish-washing unit, including two washingmachines, one tumble-dryer and two micro-waves, all free use!
The owner always take time for talk and there is obviously nothing to much to help.
We ourself had bad luck : our car had a breakdown. But the camp-owner organised a new sparepart and even lend us his own car to pick it up.
Also a big plus is the new ramp which was completed during our stay : bituminesed and wide!
The weekend before the ramp was finished the owner had gone out for camping himself.
In unexpected high pressure several coming campers struggled on their way up ; although the warden and the owner’s son managed to keep calmness & succeeded on a professional and careful way to tow the stranded vehicles up to the site.
It is clearly to see that the farmer-owner is building up a decent camp-site.
This can only be realised with personal commitment. In other words : DO IT YOURSELF! This in contrast of “somebody” suggest that he would leave the site to his ‘staff’!
Finally: NO doubt we will return to spent our holiday at High Straggleton AGAIN!
Quite easy to miss where the farm is as its not very well posted, but if you are coming from Whitby, you want to look for a house on it's own on the left, after Sandfield house caravan park you want to turn up Cliff Lane and you will find the site about 2/300 metres on the left, entry to the site is up a steep potholed road but gets a bit better as it levels off.
I would describe the site as a 'bit rough' but don't let that fool you. I was welcomed by the site warden and told where to pitch and given a run down on what was where. There are 2 freezers that are there for you to do your ice packs, a washing machine, tumble dryer and microwaves all free to use there are also phone chargers avail but I cant remember if they were free or not.
The toilet block is a old portable cabin that looks a bit iffy but again was well happy with how clean it was.
I paid £15 with hook up that I thought was a bargain for the site and location, if you pitch up at the top of the fled you will get a lovely view out to sea.
I will be using this site again, I was made very welcome the location is very good for the town and for £15 a night you cant go wrong.
Visited the farm last week, and must say it is very good, but there is certain points that are not so good, when you drive in up a very narrow lane the entrance up to the farm is a sharp left turn and you literally have to go up a 45 degree slope made of rough tarmac, now this wasn't a problem as I was in a 4x4, but cars could probably have a problem grounding or skidding, I think this may be work in progress.
The facilities toilets mainly are very clean but I don't think there is enough ( three mens and three ladies). The last negative is the touring site is a bit to close to the farm, we woke up to banging and grinding noise from the farmyard.
But all that aside we enjoyed our stay and would go back as it is a brilliant location and the farm lads are very friendly and helpful, £15 a night including electric
We have previously stayed at High Straggleton Farm with a tent and told everyone what a brilliant site it is, but this week was our first outing with our recently purchased caravan and so obviously was our first port of call.
There always seems to be space for everyone and, with the very kind help of the owner (who really is a lovely chap!), we pitched up at the front of the site overlooking the cows and an uninterrupted view of the sea, Sandsend to one side and Whitby to the other. Fantastic.
The site works are still ongoing - there is a new shower block (20p - bargain and enough water for two!), as well as the lovely new utility log cabin with washing machines, dryers, microwaves, washing up areas and even lockers that you can charge your mobiles in. There is still the old shower block divided into two with two showers (these are still free I think) and a loo in each which is great for families as lockable from the inside and loads of room inside, and the toilet block.
It is a lovely walk into either Sandsend or Whitby, via road or beach, and on the return leg you can stop off at the White House Hotel for a drink (or two) which was ideal for us as they have two garden areas to sit in, one practically on the golf course ! and the other under the trees with comfy seating - you can also take your dogs into the bar. We have only had a few snacks to eat in there, but they do a great looking three course lunch and tea time special.
Or you can do what we do and get Lobsters from the seafood shop in Whitby - extremely good value (as in cheap) in August and great on the BBQ.
All we can say is that it is one of our favourite places to stay because of the location and the site owners. AND because it is only £6 per person per night and £3 for electric (no extra charges for dogs, awnings, windbreaks, etc that some sites seem to add on and on and on).
A working dairy farm with loads of space for kids to run around, beach across the road, I would say that really great for families.
It hasnt got entertainment, top of the range facilities and shop on site (though I am sure if you asked the owner he would be able to help you out with anything), but for us it is how a site should be.
I found this site quite by accident, as we were meeting family for a night out in Whitby and I couldn't get a hotel. When we arrived we missed the quite small sign and had to ring to check we were in the right place.
It isn't clear from their website that they actually take tents so I had discarded it until a friend who lives locally pointed out she'd seen tents on the site (maybe an alteration to the website would help).
It's a very chilled out site, arrive when you want to, leave when you want to, I'd booked 2 nights thinking there would be a must be off by 12 rule. We were practice pitching our new monster tent, and I was fully anticipating a long set up and pack up.
We did struggle a little when given the choice of pitch where you want to, we're quite new to camping and not used to making such decisions! So we ended up in the middle of the bottom field and I do have to agree its a long way to the toilets. The facilities are basic, but clean.
Showers are metered at 20p a go, but given the cheap price of the site that's fine. Although we didn't bring our 4 year old, I have graded the child friendliness. There isn't anything specific for kids, room to play, but no playground. I'm sure ours could fine some mud to play in though!
Would we return, highly likely, but I'd probably pitch in the top field.
