Great site well placed within the village and two minutes walk of two great pubs with food.
The setting for this site is superb, although I'm fairly local (Kendal) it still surprised me! Pitches and grounds are very well kept indeed and the shower block have recently been refurbished to excellent standards.
Staff very friendly indeed and sell a few basic needs in reception. There is also a large washing area for dishes.
Site is dog friendly like many here in Cumbria, and even lent us a lead when ours broke.
Although just up the road I will look forward to returning here someday, highly recommended.
We returned in June 2013 for our 5th year (speaks for itself). My wife and I just love this site. We find it to be quiet but very friendly secluded but well placed for petrol and food. We love the 2 immediately local pubs (tip: they stop serving food at 9). Gosforth (3miles away) has a decent shop and great cafe (hungry parrot). Site itself has very clean toilet block with washing facilities and hookup available. The couple who run the site are very thorough and extremely helpful and friendly. You feel genuinely welcome.
The main draw for us was originally proximity to the wasdale head approach of scafell. However, we keep finding more to do each time we go. We also kayak on wastwater (a couple of minutes away) and bike along the lake path. There is a small church which was open for prayers Wednesday mornings 9:30. Ravensglass (by the sea) and muncaster castle (amazing owl sanctuary) is also a great day out. We find the area preferable to the busier Lake District towns as it is less crowded and we feel its less touristy. Of course you can hop in the car to Ambleside Keswick etc.
This year we used the new shepherds hut. It was absolutely fantastic. Spacious enough for 2 as long as you're tidy. Quaintly and stylishly decorated and complete with almost all of your pots and cutlery needs. The wood burning stove was fantastic. Looks small but heats the hut quickly. We were also supplied with a fire pit for outdoor heating and cooking. You can also cook with one pan on the stove when it is at full heat. We had matches, lighter cubes and BBQ utensils provided as well as all the wood we needed. Deck chairs rounded of our perfect break. If you think you might like to try the shepherds hut I can fully recommend it. On windy, rainy or cold days the extra protection and warmth made it so much more comfortable. My wife was pregnant and we really appreciated the luxury but would recommend to anyone.
After many years family camping this was my first bash at solo camping in my Terra Nova 2 person tent. The site itself is lovely and well maintained with the pitches well spaced out. The owners (there are new ones now) were friendly and welcoming. The Western Lakes are much less touristy and the village itself is lovely with 2 excellent pubs. I liked the Screes Inn - with its Quiz, excellent food and good company.
Mobile phone signal is very patchy and be careful as I picked up the IOM via roaming - only knew as I got a text welcoming me!.
Showers and toilets well maintained and very clean. There is a drying room too which was helpful. Shops are some way away in Gosforth so come with what you need.
Excellent walking from the doorstep. A really nice site which I will return to.
The idea of staying in the West Lakes for a week in late spring, with a 3yr old, a 10 week old baby, oh-and a sleep deprived wife, could have been quite traumatic, and in hindsight, a potential disaster. However. We didn't account for the superb hospitality that was to be extended to us by the new owners of Church Stile Farm.
Quite simply one of the best weeks camping I've experienced in the past 22 years. The weather of course played its part, ranging from a balmy 22 degrees to a frosty zero, (plus the usual Wasdale-wind to keep the guy rope monitor busy), but the highlight had to be the Shephard's Hut we rented.
I sensed a little hesitation when I suggested that my wife and 10 week old son be the inaugural residents of the newly appointed 'Shearling', but we soon all agreed that it was a better idea than him keeping half the site awake (on a bank holiday weekend) with his inevitable squeaking between midnight and 6am!
The owners were more than accommodating; situating the hut so that we could erect our tent alongside, leaving room in-between for a table and the brand new BBQ/Firepit that was provided. The hut was literally a life-saver on the cold nights; my wife simply dropping a few bits of kindling into the log-burner's embers each time she was awoken to feed the sprog, and it also turned out to be a fantastically cool retreat from the mid-day sun as well. I imagine in time they'll run some power to it for the dedicated 'Glampers' who'd need to charge their iPhones, however a little pointless in Nether Wasdale, given the poor mobile reception.
The facilities are clean and perfectly adequate, plus there's also a family bathroom exclusively for those with very young children. (I wish more sites could provide this!) The local pubs are excellent, and the perfect distance from the site in bad weather. The site is also perfect for kids, with both a play area plus the fantastic adjacent 'Shop Wood' for exploring and building dens.
We bought provisions from both the local shop in Gosforth and also the Co-op in Egremont, but I also think that the owners would do a roaring trade on basic provisions if they could find the time!
All in all, I'd highly recommend it, unless of course you're a group of late-night-drinking youths - in which case I can recommend everywhere else ;-)
Just returned from a lovely Easter weekend break with the g/f and dog. New owners took over the site in November so this was the first time any campers arrived. The first thing to say really is a big thank you to them for such a nice welcome. It is obvious that a lot of work has been put into the site to make it as clean and spotless as it was.
Pitches were spacious, flat and well looked after. Toilet and shower block was immaculate and had been painted to brighten it up. Views of Scafell range and The Screes are breathtaking. There was certainly a sense of freedom and feeling cut off from the world (no mobile signal).
Pros – Beautiful and useful location to take on Scafell, Pillar, Great Gable and others. (30 minutes to Wasdale Head for Scafell).
Friendly and dedicated owners who always give a cheerful hello and will join you for a beer in the local pub.
Toilet and showers very clean and well maintained.
Dog friendly as long as on the lead.
Lovely Woodland walks run out of the campsite if you don’t want to tackle a mountain (we even spotted wild deer in the woods behind the site).
Quiet site, not many tourists in this part of the lakes.
Local people are very friendly.
Two local pubs in the hamlet of Nether Wasdale, real ale, nice food, pub quiz, dog friendly.
Kids play area was always busy and we even had a bash on the swings.
Cons- At busy times the shower block will be busy as only two cubicles are available (but free showers and nice temperature + very clean)
We paid £66 which is more than we have paid before, this was over an Easter Weekend though with EHU so no real complaints.
Nearest local shop is 4 miles away in Gosforth which is about 15 minutes in the car. Maybe a small farm shop or sandwiches for the walkers packed lunches would be good for the summer season.
We had never been to the Western Lakes before as it is a little further to travel. We were glad we did. We could not have asked for a nicer place to spend our Easter weekend. The site is beautiful and I would have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone. A working farm yes, but great for parents, kids and big kids alike. Should we go back for our Honeymoon in June and forget about Snowdonia? Maybe we will (as we did promise we would consider it after sinking too much of that lovely real ale in the pub on the last night).
I have just returned from a very wet week at Church stile. Most points have already been mentioned in previous reviews but I will give it a shot. My first impression of the site came as I wandered around while waiting for reception to re-open after lunch.
This was obviously far removed from the regimented tenko style campsites I have been unfortunate to stay at in the past. Rather this was an informally laid out site broken by many plants shrubs and trees thoughtfully selected not only to divide the site into separate areas but chosen for their high water absorbency. ie Willows.
The shower block is excellent with a high standard of cleanliness. Access is by keypad code as it is sited on a walkers path. To the rear of the building is a small laundry and pot washing area. Tokens purchased from reception at the time of writing washer £1. 80, drier £1. 00. This proved to be an invaluable facility in the coming week.
The ground for the most part drains quite well with only a few areas retaining water so most pitches (around 50) were usable. Impressive considering the rainfall had been described as 'of biblical proportions' I would advise rock pegs. The base of my tent was held in place with normal pegs but hard going to get them in at times. The guys all held with well driven rock pegs.
I was very pleased to have the chance to talk with the warden a couple of times. I was impressed with an attitude of seeing things from the campers perspective. With this in mind there are plenty of EHUs and picnic benches. A small play area and a ball game field are adjacent to the pitches providing safe areas for the young ones. It is also worth noting that a marked woodland walk rises above the site where children can make dens. The middle of the trail gives an excellent view of Middle fell with a bench to just sit and admire the view.
Would I use this site again??? Just try and stop me.
In conclusion the current owners have the farm and campsite up for sale. One hopes that any new owners keep it pretty much as it is. Wifi is available at the local pub and a public phone is just down the road. So we were hardly cut off from the outside world.
We arrived on a very wet and windy Friday afternoon with our two small children. If we hadn't been meeting friends we would probably have cancelled.
On arrival we booked in at reception. The welcome was very friendly and we were given a map and shown where we could pitch. They had very helpfully allocated an area so that we could all pitch close to each other.
Despite having booked for two nights we were offered the option of just paying for the first night in case we didn't want the second night due to the weather. Many sites would have insisted on taking payment for both nights.
The last time I stayed on this site it was a small field with four static caravans down one side and you pitched where you wanted. So I was quite surprised to see that the site has been expanded. It's still a small site and is well laid out with areas for motorhomes, electric hook ups and non electric.
The pitches are tidy with plenty of small shrubs and trees to break up the site. The grass was well mown.
There is a refuse area with a large number of bins and a large recycling area. This is great as I hate the sight of bins overflowing at busy times.
There is a small children's play area and a ball games area which is great for those with young ones. There is also an area of woodland which s great for exploring.
The shower block and pot wash area is modern and spotless. The showers are secure and accessed by a keycode.
There was no hot water on the weekend of our stay. This was due to a broken boiler. The fault had only just happened, so there is nothing that the owners could have done about it. They had the heating engineers out on the Sunday working on it. The owner was very apologetic and was very disappointed that this had happened as they had just invested quite a bit of money having the boiler serviced and new burners fitted.
I was offered a refund of our second night fees in compensation but I declined. This could happen anywhere and it was being looked at, so it will not affect my view of this excellent, well run site.
This is an excellent sheltered site in a great location if you enjoy walking and the countryside in general, it's run by very friendly owners and we will definitely be returning.
The only improvement I would suggest would be to have a small shop on site selling the essentials such as bread and milk. The nearest shop is only around five miles away, so it's not a big deal.
As two very nervous campers ready for an adventure for the first time in over 10 years I was apprehensive but excited after reading earlier reviews. We weren't disappointed as the site was as people had said before: plenty of space even on Jubilee weekend, showers/toilets were clean, space to wash up the pots (and wine glasses from the night before), excellent scenery and two pubs within walking distance.
The owners were very nice and explained clearly where we could pitch and apart from the wind we got set up quickly so we could explore.
The only downside for our visit was one of the showers in the male toilets was out of order (no problem with the females), and my partner would have liked mobile signal but he survived! Taking everything into account we had an amazing few days and we can't wait to return!
Fantastic pitch very spacious with hook up and a tap
Separate play areas for children
Woodland for dog walking
Quiet
Beautiful location including 2 pubs serving lovely food
Very clean including the shower block and very secure
The only slight complaint I have is it was a bit expensive at 78 pound, although that was for a large tent with hook up and a dog and like I said, the site was one of the best well run sites we have visited.
What a fantastic site. Friendly people, excellent, well looked after facilities and a beautiful location.
It is a small site, so even when busy it doesn't feel overcrowded. The children's play area is great and there is a ball field as well with goal posts included!
The surrounding scenery is great, and leaves the site well protected from winds. There is a little woodland walk on site, as well as a footpath coming out the back of the site.
Pitches were all spacious and flat (we have a very big tent and had more then enough room for tent, car and playing!).
Two pubs in spitting distance, both serving food and one also offers mountain bike hire and climbing etc.
Nearest shop is a short drive away in Gosforth, so bear that in mind when you arrive.
There have been some comments about the lane leading to the village, but due to where we live we are well used to lanes like that and worse. It is however worth noting, it is narrow.
We booked and paid for our pitch (20 pounds) and site was as all other reviewers had reported.
Clean, tidy, well set out, welcoming, tranquil, secluded.
Set in a private hollow, great base for walkers, ramblers and energetic cyclists.
It is however, totally cut off. No DTV, no radio, no mobile. No signals of any kind. Afraid couldn't do with being cut off to this extent and had to move on.
Road to the west of Wast Water is out of another world. Unable to see the sunken WWII plane. Is it really there?
Just returned from our second visit this year to this fantastic campsite. Remote it is but it is so worthwhile. The owners Ruth and Alan are very friendly and helpful.
Been coming to this site for six years and my children love it. Aged 6 and 7. Playground, toilet block, showers, laundry room are very well maintained and always clean.
Stunning scenery and great woodland walk. Nature in abundance along with two great pubs serving great food and beer.
Just spent five wonderful nights at this campsite- was meant to be four nights but we managed to stay an extra night. Our pitch was nice and flat and the grass was in great condition. We were close to the park which was safe for our youngest to go to as we could keep a close eye on him. The site only accepts tents but had a few statics which seemed empty during our stay.
The site is very remote with some stunning views. The only noise that could be heard was kids playing and nature. Pure bliss. Was unable to get a mobile signal so bliss again!
The toilet and shower block was kept clean and tidy. Nice big showers but only two. Had to wait once but hey ho no hassle.
I did not use the laundry facilities but loved the big freezer which we used for our freezer blocks.
The site itself is very well maintained and set out lovely. Lots of shrubs and bushes in between the EHU pitches. In addition to the playpark, there is also a field for ball games.
The two pubs are just a minute's walk from the site entrance. Both offered a great choice of real ales and food at fantastic prices. As previously mentioned, the chips in the Screes pub were delicious.
I would love to return to this site again just for the peace and quiet!
Two adults stayed at this 'out of the way' site for 4 nights at the end of July 2011. Booked into the quiet area which was quiet most of the time. Showers were big and clean, as were the toilets. A well planned site. Play ground not used by us! but it was more than adequate for the children that were there.
Site owners were welcoming and easily accessible.
The two pubs about 5 minutes walk away are very good, offering between them, a wide range of food and beers, including those from the micro- brewery. The T'erminator beer was not on this time but will catch up again. The scenery was breathtaking and an ideal place to base yourselves if you want to climb Scafell Pike - the highest mountain in England. We didn't as Ben Nevis got the better of us a few days earlier!
As there was little or no radio or mobile phone signal there, you can stay in cognito and just relax and turn off.
The area and site is highly recommended by us and would consider staying sometime again soon.
Just returned from a weeks stay at Church Stile Farm. We arrived in brilliant sunshine and as soon as we climbed out the car we were hit with sweet, fresh air, then spotted a magnificent bird of prey circling over the hills, a sight we saw many times on our stay. Views were amazing from the site and its not far from Wast Water Lake which is lovely to walk round. Only noises heard were nearby farm animals- no roads or planes. Very peaceful.
The site owners are helpful and always at hand if you need them. They have 'quiet areas' though they really should reserve quiet areas for adults only.
They are very strict on this site- signs absolutely everywhere! Very particular about noise and scorching the grass and signs threaten to throw you off the site if you have any complaint made against you or if you burn the grass.
Also signs telling you that you must keep dogs on leads at all times and you must pick up poop- fair enough- though the owners dog ran amock regularly and we saw it a few times approaching the campers tethered dogs. It was friendly enough- just nosey and wanted to sniff the campers dogs but it did cause a lot of barking and worried owners.
As for toilets and showers- loos were clean and never had to queue to get a shower every morning. The showers were always lovely and hot too. Free hairdryer and an area to do makeup which I thought a good idea.
Freezer- Absolutely loved the fact they have a free freezer for you to put your cooler box blocks in. Other sites should do this! proved very popular with the campers and no problems with people nicking each others blocks etc.
Nearby stuff:
Would fully recommend visiting the nearby Screes Inn, only a short walk from the site- very old country pub- friendly, real ale and fantastic food at a reasonable price. Probably the best pub chips we've ever eaten and left nice and full. Chef came out himself and asked people if meals were ok- a lovely touch.
For nearby shops, there is a londis sort of shop in Gosforth which isnt too far to drive so you can get your necessities, postcards and a few souvenirs.
There isnt a chippy in the town so we drove over to Seascale the one night for our traditional holiday chip dinner but I really wouldn't recommend the chippy there. Absolutely dire. Had hardly any food, waited ages, servings were shockingly small and funnily enough- no customers! I think there is a hotel in Gosforth that does take away fish and chips but I don't know what they're like, but id try that next time instead.
As for nearby attractions- We visited Muncaster Castle which was a good day out- and has an owl centre which we enjoyed. Id wanted to go on the Ratty train but we were hit with bad weather so gave it a miss but I think it would have been fun to do. I think you come to this area for walking, relaxing and for the countryside really. I think if you want a holiday packed with things to do its best to try the Keswick area.
Visited the towns Whitehaven and Egremont but was disappointed. No unique shops or restaurants-
Overall -
We did have a good stay here and we would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a good base in amazing countryside. If we were to return to the area I wouldn't hesitate to book up here again.
