This was our second year using this site for a large group of family and friends. It seems that word has got around what a great place it is - this year there were less vacant pitches! However there was still plenty of space for a game of cricket, football, touch rugby etc. Facilities are clean and tidy and the staff friendly and helpful.
A warden is now in place to ensure everyone keeps the noise down at night and ensure that any fires do not get out of hand. He was approachable and friendly.
All in all a great little site with family in mind.
Having visited this site in the dead of winter and stayed in the orchard area it was difficult to imagine what it would be like in the middle of the summer.
The welcome was friendly and helpful. We were given an extension for our EHU and a very large area in which to site our tents, day tent and tarp. The charge of £12 per night and £15 with EHU is very reasonable and there are no extra charges. The arrangement of the tents around the edge of the very large field and some down the middle works well; there are large open spaces and in spite of a large number of people it does not feel crowded. It is ideal for large parties but we would be very happy to camp here on our own. The main sounds are of children playing happily. Neither our six young grand children nor the adults discovered any sign of barbed wire. We do accept that because the field is so large there may be a little bit somewhere.
We feel that comments about facilities are usually of the nit picking variety and we found them to be perfectly adequate. Paul told us that they are thinking of providing an extra block.
We spent a very enjoyable weekend at this site and will return.
We chose this site because we’d never visited the area before. As C&C members, decided against their St Neots site as not value for money at £22 per night. Top End Farm cost us £15 per night (2 adults, tent, EHU). We stayed five nights, arriving Monday. Note: during less busy periods, you have until 4pm to vacate Top End Farm.
The owners and owner’s daughters were lovely and welcoming. You find them in the shop. Wardens weren’t on-site during our stay mid-week so can’t comment.
We were pitched in the hedged enclosure with two other units. No one was on the large field. So, our comments are based on it not being busy.
Facilities wise, good. We take the point about there being no surfaces around the two hand basins in the Gents but there was room enough for our needs plus a hook for towel. Showers are of the push-button variety, which are not our favourite. However, the water was lovely and hot and the water pressure very good. There is also plenty of room to manoeuvre.
They have other good facilities too. Internally, there are three sinks with loads of hot water. Ok, they may take a while to fill, but hey. Rather have slow fill hot water than fast fill tepid. Also, there is a freezer for freezing ice packs. No charge. C&C take note. Outside the facilities block, there are two external cold water sinks.
The farm shop is probably the most stocked shop we’ve ever come across on a site. It’s also the village shop and it’s like a mini-mart. Prices are what you would expect from a village shop or, indeed, your local corner shop. Shop shuts at 6pm of a week day.
Site shop not enough? There’s a butcher and a Post Office in the near village, Gt Staughton. Turn left out of the camp site and leave the village. At the T-junction, turn right for St Neots. Pass the church in Gt Staughton on your right, go over bridge and at the junction, signed left for Northampton, turn right toward St Neots. Gilberts Butcher on your left. Post Office is 200 yards further down on the right.
Want supermarkets? Two in St Neots: Cooperative and Waitrose. Drive over the bridge spanning the River Ouse and head left after Beadles department store. Want bigger? Then head down the A1 South to the next junction and take the A428 Cambridge. There’s a huge Tesco Extra off the second roundabout.
We disagree with there being little to do in the area. We also would not expect the site to have some responsibility for what is or what isn’t to do in the area. We research the location beforehand and decide what we’d like to see and do. Consequently, we found a great deal to do and places to visit. Some were local. Others were a drive away. We were there for a week. Had we had extra time, we wouldn’t have been stuck for what to do.
Criticisms. We have two and both are minor for us. Firstly, don’t advertise internet connectivity. There’s an issue with it, which isn’t going to be resolved soon. Take it off your advertisement until it’s sorted. Secondly, improve the information kiosk. It’s not just for flyers for the local take-aways.
Chosen for a weekend away as it's fairly local. The site is quite large and broken up with a row of hedges in the middle. Wardens are very friendly and show you to your allocated pitch and explain your pitch boundaries and where the facilities are. The toilets/showers were very clean. Kids enjoyed the play area. Has an extremely well stocked farm shop on site where you can buy almost everything from fresh to frozen. The only downsides are the hot taps in the kitchen and the showers. The taps/shower are the push type which only run for a very short time before you need to push them again to re-start the water. Takes a long time to fill a sink to wash up and not good for washing long hair!
This is a large site, consisting of 2 flat, well drained, fields the largest I'd guess to be about 11 acres the other about 1 acre. Most of the boundary is fenced with barbed wire.
The site rules are pretty relaxed and large parties of campers are welcome.
Whilst there during the May Bank Holiday weekend we only saw less than a dozen single tents. All the rest where is parties of at least two families with some 'tent villages' of 8 or more 8 man family tents. So if you want a quiet time go elsewhere.
The site/shop staff were friendly, helpful and welcoming. Sadly neither they nor their warden enforced any of the site rules they present to you upon arrival. Therefore the noise curfew was not enforced and some selfish groups had parties going on until 3 and 4 in the morning.
We got the impression that as long as you used their shop - which was the only one for about 5 miles, they left the campers to their own devices and stayed away from the field. The nearest large supermarket is the Co-operative Superstore in St Neots and is about 4 miles away.
The Toilet block is far too small for the number of campers the site can and does take. The gents had 2 washbasins - without any shelves or hooks for your wash-bag, 2 urinals, 3 showers and 3 toilets. Which was constantly busy and you had to queue most of the time. That said they were generally quite clean although the shower temp fluctuated greatly depending on hot water usage.
They did hire 4 port-a-loos for the bank holiday weekend. It desperately needs an additional larger toilet block at the opposite end of the site.
They don't have wifi or internet access as advertised so should take it off their listings, when challenged they gave a poor excuse and did not seem getting it working any time soon. Plus the mobile signal for EE and O2 is pretty weak in the area and made surfing next to impossible.
The nearest pub is The Crown Inn at Green End just outside Little Staughton and is 1. 4 miles from the campsite. Tip - If you want food on a Friday or Saturday get there early (6. 00ish) and pre order before the kitchen opens at 7. 00 if possible. You could their menu and book view on-line if you had internet access. Just up the road from the site is the Memorial to the 582 Pathfinder Bomber Squadron and the Crown Inn has a wall dedicated to them.
Other than that there is absolutely nothing to do other than walking and cycling around the locality.
Our girls spent a lot of time in the play area with it's giant fibreglass shoe, swings and 'half-pipe'. That was until on the Saturday some “teen vandal” ripped a big hole in the 'half-pipe' which was then closed off with hazard tape at least 4 times, only to have the tape broken thus letting the children climb all over it again. - It stayed that way for a week and was still broken when we left the following weekend.
The weekends had fabulous weather although midweek weather could have been better, it was getting very soggy/muddy under foot, but dried out quickly with the welcomed sunshine. They should however ban commercial vehicles as flat bed trucks tend to churn the ground up when it’s wet especially and driven recklessly.
To sum up we had a nice enough time here - but won’t be rushing back. I’m sure it’s great if you are a large group and go just for the weekend and don't want to go to bed.
Visited this site for the 1st Bank Holiday in May. We picked this site as its only half hour from home and we were able to go for just the 1 night. Even though the site was busy we were able to find a nice pitch. We were close to the play area which was handy as we have a 2 year old who we could keep in sight of. The shop was well stocked and reasonably priced, they even sell refills for gas bottles.
The facilities were reasonably clean with portable toilets around the site. I wasn't impressed with the washing up facilities as there wasn't any hot water. There is a poster explaining there's 'no hot water during peak periods' but when are you meant to wash your dishes? I decided to fill my bowel up with the sink in the shower block, as I didn't want to keep trekking across the field until 'peak time' was over.
We didn't really see much of the surround area apart from St Neots, as we weren't there long enough.
We will definitely be visiting the site again due to location and also there is no arrival/ departure times.
We visited during a typically rainy half-term and, having got used to the 'luxury' of my little caravan, I was glad I was not in my tent!
The field got very wet, but it did drain between the deluges!
The site is a huge, flat field with some nice planting, which will grow into decent hedges. The pitch we used had it's own EHU and there were plenty of water points. The entrance is easy enough for arriving with a caravan (important for me as I am a novice tower).
Good bits:
The play area was a magnet for all the kids on the site, and being half term there were many of them. Even better, it seemed they quickly formed a massive tribe and my two boys had a most awesome time (their words!).
The site is big enough that people didn't have to camp right next to the play area but you could see it from pretty much everywhere, which is great for parents who want to relax with the kids in view.
There is plenty of room for groups to camp together and arrange their tents in circles.
Camp fire are allowed - you can hire fire pits.
Facilities were clean and spacious. Despite there being a number of large groups, we never had to queue for any of the facilities.
All the staff I met were very nice, and the shop is well stocked.
Less good bits:
As a personal preference, I like a more cosy feel to a site. This is my only negative thought, and actually would only be applicable if I didn't have my boys with me - on this occasion I did appreciate the open vista to the play area.
Just returned from a bank holiday weekend it was very busy but the wardens had time to talk to everyone. The shower blocks were always clean and the village shop sold all you need. The site was very well maintained and there was a large area for the children to play. We Will be returning in the near future. On arrival we were welcomed by the warden and offered the choice of being near the play area or not, as our children are older we were happy to camp further away. Although the site was busy there was plenty of space for everyone to have room to play.
This is a curate's egg of a site. Good in parts, but the whole is spoiled by flaws.
The good:
*excellent shop
*EHU pitches not too expensive as they go, *facilities generally clean,
*flat and mown pitches.
*Limited number of fire pits for hire at £20 per night.
The not-so-good:
*The kids playground has seen better days, the skateboard ramp was a nest of splinters and the slide had a large muddy puddle at the bottom.
*My 25m EHU lead did not reach to the 4-gang point although the busy warden was able to lend me an extension.
*There were a large number of dogs around, not all of them well controlled. The same area that kids were playing in was used to walk the dogs - I saw owners did pick up after their animals, but there is still a hygiene issue here.
The bad:
I think it was Sartre who said that hell is other people.
*The site was rammed when I was there, and pitches were closer than 6 meters. The facilities struggled to cope, with long waits for showers and washing up sinks at peak times. When you got your turn at the washing up sink, usually there was no hot water left. I suspect the owners were being a bit greedy with the number of people they were trying to squeeze onto the site.
*I booked the pitch 3 months previous (me, Mrs R and 2 pre-schoolers). When I turned up I got a bit nervous when I saw the number of groups pitched on the site. Sure enough, the pitch we were put on was next to a large group of people spread over 4 pitches who proceeded to have a very noisy 48-hour party. Even if I like someone else's choice of music, I do not want to listen to it booming into my tent 20 hours a day, not when I am trying to get the kids to sleep and especially not after the noise curfew which was completely ignored. On night 2, although the volume of Little Staughton's own Pascha was lowered whenever they thought the warden might be listening, some thoughtful soul in a different large group decided to start their generator just before curfew.
We decided to cut our trip short, heading for home a day early to get some quality sleep. The site would be good if you just want to party but I would not recommend it for families with younger children.
We visited this site a week ago. Had a lovely weekend in sunny weather, great for a change. There were not many on site so very quiet. Shame they had to close the site for Easter. We hope to go back soon. Nice to see a warden on site perhaps it will stop people damaging the facilities?
The site is not too far from St neots if you cannot get what you need at the well stocked shop,
Also there are some nice walks from the site, we always seem to find the one down to the Crown pub for food & a few drinks, then round by the church to continue a round walk, about 4mls in all
The site description is quite comprehensive. The site people are helpful and pleasant and my stay was good. Toilet facilities were OK and playground was big. The shop has fresh stuff every day and is open 7 days a week. A bus runs from the site entrance 4 times a day into Bedford. The area is pleasantly rural. All good.
I am full timing and I just wanted to identify a couple of things that are missing from my point of view.
1. There are no laundry facilities. The nearest are not exactly conveniently located.
2. The wifi does not work. I need this for emails and booking and banking etc.
Both of these are important to me.
So, from my point of view, the site is good for a weekend or maybe even a week but not for longer.
I have used this site, 4 or 5 times a year for the last 5 years, for odd nights and long weekends and for start and end of seasons 'van testing' as the site is 30mins from my storage site!
If they did seasonal pitches I would have one like a shot.
Friendly staff, well stocked shop, good clean facilities and a well kept site.
Since the opening of the new toilet / shower block the place has gone from strength to strength.
If you're looking for Butlins nightlife, move on. But if you want a 'haven' of peace and quiet this is the spot - although a closer local pub would be a bonus!
Visited this site to try out my folding caravan for the first time. The campsite was very spacious and clean and had a nice little playground, although it was very cold and windy so not many children brave enough to be out.
The shop was well stocked. The showers and toilets were immaculate and regularly checked and cleaned, very impressive. Having never towed or used a caravan before I must have looked as though I needed help. The site warden offered assistance and gave me some handy tips and advice and helped me put up the awning. He also popped over as we were getting ready to leave to see iif we were ok. This was very much appreciated and I feel more confident about what I'm doing now.
It was £15 per night including electric hook up per pitch. We didn't go off site so can't comment on area. We will definitely be returning to this friendly well organised site.
Just back from a delightful night at this new discovery of ours. We took out montana 6 and extension and stayed non electric for 1 night.
We loved this site. There is masses of open spaces for children to run around and play. No marked out pitches for non electric so you could go pretty much where you wanted. There's a brilliant park which kept our 4 year old very amused and you can choose to camp right by it or a little further away. We pitched far enough away to see and supervise him but far enough to be out of the noise.
The site is well sheltered by trees, the grass is kept in fantastic condition, there are so many water taps around and the ground is totally flat.
The facilities block housed a wash up with freezer for your blocks, showers, toilets and elsan. The ladies had a plug socket for straighteners / hairdryer which was handy.
A chip van does generally visit on Saturday nights but there was a sign up saying it had let them down recently and not to rely on it. It indeed not turn up on our stay. Local; fast food places do however deliver to the area if you so desire, menus in a little information hut.
Excellent farm shop with a fantastic selection of goods.
We loved this site and at only 35 mins from home this will be a new favourite :) Only £12 a night for 2 adults 2 children too non electric. Bargain! This site is 20 mis from St Neots.
Me and my family used this site last week and thought it was such a great place that we wanted to share or thoughts. The grounds are well kept clean tidy and well manicured.
The toilets were clean and tidy but would struggle if site was full as there is a limited amount. The shop was well stocked and staff friendly, excellent value for money and are planning to go back again as the kids loved the park and the safety and freedom the site allows.
Its just a 6mile drive away from st neots and surrounded by beautiful country side, a must recommend.
