This was one of the nicest little camp sites we have been on for a while, although the facilities are not five star the site and the customer service easily made up for that. We had a very nice welcome from Ray who gave us a guided tour of the site before we chose our pitch. It was quiet when we arrived but even so the electric hook ups where that far apart that even when busy you would have plenty of room so that whatever you did you were not annoying to your neighbours. The site is large with a small lake or large pond and for the summer there is an indoor inflatable pool which is large enough to have a little fun in. Dogs are well catered for as there is a large dog walking area where the dog can be let off the lead. The facilities are probably only 3 star but the shower was hot and was clean as were the toilets and the washing up area. There is a pub across the road but we never ventured into there (this time) but very handy for an evening out and a meal. This is a lovely part of the country and well worth a visit. Ray is quite willing to give you the low down of where to visit and events going on. We really wanted to keep this site a secret as it's so good but we promised Ray a review as he had been so helpful.
This is my second review of this campsite, the last one was in October 2012. We always wanted to go back to this site as the last time it rained pretty much the whole weekend! This was a short notice decision to go away for the Easter weekend with two other caravans so was very surprised that we got in. Ray, however, has loads of space here and I think even when he is 'full' you wouldn't think it as there are several different areas where he sites vans and the site is massive! We were able to park our vans by a hedge at the back of the site, in front of the pond (the same place as before) and we have had a lovely weekend!
There is also plenty of room for children to play football, etc. , well away from the caravans, without bothering anybody else.
The electric supply has to be thought through before you go turning everything on! Our normal domestic kettle we have in all of our vans, constantly tripped the switch so we reverted to the gas kettle so no more problems.
As in other reviews, the facilities are basic but clean. The whole site is quite 'rustic' which is it's appeal.
The men in our party did a bit of fishing in the pond in front of our pitches. Nothing strenuous, just a bit of gentle, relaxing, fishing.
Ray is a lovely, friendly chap who makes you feel very welcome. Just a lovely, friendly atmosphere on this site. Definitely not your posh, underfloor heated shower blocks and clubhouses here, just a relaxed atmosphere which is just what we needed. Having a campfire too, is a draw for us. You can't beat it, in the evenings, whilst having a drink with friends.
In my last review I had mentioned that there wasn't any water at the chemical waste point but that has been rectified so all good.
The Poachers Pocket pub was exactly as before. A quaint olde worlde pub with good basic pub food. Nothing fancy just good value.
All in all, a lovely weekend with our good friends. I think we may have been a touch loud while we were sitting round our campfire but we're not hard core and are tucked up in bed by 9. 30pm!
Lovely, small and quirky campsite with lots of privacy, a nice fishing lake in the middle and adequate facilities. The site owner, Ray, is a cheerful and very helpful character who makes you feel welcome immediately and has a great sense of fun about him. Showers were a bit hit and miss, but all other provisions were great with a nice, quiet pub within a stone's throw of the site. We had a great time there and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone committed to a 'real' camping experience where provisions are sufficient, but not holiday park-esque!
Stayed here for three nights and the weather was fab. We we're met by Ray the owner who had been very communicative when booking and very friendly when we arrived. Showed us around the campsite and I was initially a little concerned as he said they were completely full, however Ray seems to very much limit the number of units allowed on this very spacious site, to the point where we had our own paddock of around an acre to us and one other tent. Over our stay we had two other families join us in the field, as you can chose where you go, but have been to lots of other sites where 20+ tents would've been squeezed on to this space, and that's one of the best aspects of this site. The EHU was via a series of extension leads that Ray provided, which was a little unusual but didn't give us any problems. Southwold (lovely, old fashioned, not tacky) beach and seaside was a 20min drive away. Saxmundham town (very sleepy) was a five min drive and had a Tesco and Waitrose as well as some takeaways, so all you need really. As one other reviewer has put, there's a bit of a Heath Robinson feel to some of the facilities on site, but it only added to the charm in our opinion, and the fire pits made out of a washing machine drum are ingenious, not to mention free of charge. The grounds and fishing lake (lots of easily caught Rudd, roach and small carp between 8oz-2lb, so great for the kids) are beautifully kept and the toilets/showers were clean. We found that the showers were a little temperamental in terms of pressure and temperature and had quite a 'rustic' feel to them but it certainly didn't bother us too much. There's a help yourself shop (that isn't a rip off) with honesty box and ample fridges and freezers for ice packs, milk, meat etc. There's no play park for the kids but there's a tyre swing and large field for the kids to play in although there was so much space in our field that they didn't need to venture off, which again, was a real positive as we could always keep an eye on them. Some people have commented that there's some road noise, but we didn't notice it, and found it very peaceful. There was a games room but it only seemed to contain a very well used pool table, but there is a raised indoor pool in a poly tunnel that can be hired out privately for £2 per person which was good fun. One of the highlights was that Ray comes round each evening with a large low sided trailer on the back of his mpv with bags of logs and kindling for sale, but picks up all the kids who sit in the trailer for a lap of the campsite which they absolutely loved as well as getting the kids introduced to each other, and gave the parents half an hour to themselves! As a family, we tend to put more value on space and tranquility rather than a campsite with structured pitches and modern facilities, and it's so nice to be allowed an open fire at night to sit around which so few sites seem to allow, so for us, we found that this was perfect for what we wanted. Highly recommended and would 100% return.
If you are looking for a risk free but seldom exciting camp site like other club sites then this is not for you, we had a brilliant stay all thanks to the owner and his staff, our pitch was spacious, peaceful, with a beautiful view overlooking the lake, yes the toilets and showers were basic but kept clean. The owner really put his self out to make sure the children had loads fun, I really wouldn't want anything to change on this site and will definitely be back, a big thank you
We had a really pleasant stay here for two nights. The site is huge and we had a small field with just us and one other family in it. The grass was short and the site was well drained and level. There was lots of room for the kids to play in.
The owner is very friendly and made us feel at home when he showed us around. He provided a fire pit which was made from a washing machine drum, wood and kindling. There is a small shop, unmanned with an honesty box, selling bits and pieces, with other items such as air beds available from the owner. There is also a fridge and freezer for ice packs.
The site does, however, have its down sides. It is quite close to the A12 and while the traffic roar isn't loud enough to be intrusive, it is a constant background noise.
The facilities were kept clean and reasonably well stocked, but there was a general air of decay to them. The toilets and washing up area had a 'rustic' feel to them and the gent's-only toilet didn't seem to have any lighting in it. This impression continued on the site, for example a frankly dangerous trampoline with several springs missing, and a collapsing football goal in our field. There was quite a lot of farmyard-type rubbish lying around in places, adding to the feel that the site is a bit neglected.
I should add that these things did not actually spoil our visit and the site's location is perfect as a base for exploring the region and visiting places such as Framlingham Castle and Aldeburgh.
Stayed here last weekend with friends - 2 families 2 caravans. We were celebrating a special birthday so were more than happy with our pitch - lovely secluded spot where we were allowed a fire!
The owner was more than helpful and had time to chat to us - he was there if we needed him!
The site has lots of choice of where to pitch either by the lake or more secluded in the meadow with specially close mown areas. The toilets / showers were basic but serviceable, there is a small help yourself shop area with honesty box and space for campers to use in fridge/freezer. Water and chemical waste emptying by the main house. We were also allowed to use the pool table in the games room. Ideally situated to see coastal Suffolk and right near the Poachers Pocket pub !
This is the first site I've stayed on in over 2 years - we stayed here in June with friends. The campsite is huge with the pitches very far apart. The owner took us around the site and let us choose where we wanted stay. We chose a field that he did not think was quite ready for us to pitch up but we thought it was perfect as we were completely on our own - what a treat!
We also chose to have fire basket, which was lovely in the evening and as there is so much space we were not worried about disturbing other campers.
The showers and washing up area is basic but they are clean and free.
The site is really peaceful, lots of different birds and plenty of rabbits.
The owner manages to be on hand when you need him but is never intrusive and really leaves you to get on with it.
Just spent 3 nights here, we wanted to go somewhere quiet and we were lucky we almost had the place to ourselves, the owner was friendly the services ie: showers, toilets were ok did what you needed. The location was lovely, there was lots of places to visit, quite close. We had a pleasant time. I would return.
Been here many times and always have an amazing time. We always have a huge choice of places to pitch our tent, sometimes we go by the lake and other times in another field so we can have a campfire. The owner Ray couldn't be more helpful and even set up a TV in the games room so we could watch the England game. The boys always love the fishing and it is great for children as many small fish can be caught very easily. There is no set arrival or leaving time and this makes for a very relaxing stay. Will be back again very soon!
Just recently got back from a weeks stay at Mill Farm. Have to say one of the best family friendly sites I have ever stayed on. Owner went out of his way to be helpful and his children encouraged the children on site camping to join in with games etc enabling us adults to chill out. That's what camping is about !
Toilet and shower facilities were basic but extremely clean and always warm, especially the ladies shower. Small general supplies were on hand as was wood for fires. All reasonably priced. Fishing lake looked inviting but we didn't use it but other campers looked like they enjoyed themselves. Plenty of fish seen bobbing about. Site was spacious and children loved the space to roam free and we felt happy to let them carry on. Games room was great when we had a bit of rain
Swimming pool was a bonus and our kids loved it. Again very cheap.
Tescos &Waitrose in the nearby village and a park not far away for kids if you fancy a walk.
All in all a great family holiday and we have already booked to go back. Highly Recommended.
My husband and I have just returned from a three night break at Mill Farm. This was a first time camping experience for us and it was great. The owner was so welcoming and helpful, showing us where we could put up our tent and showing us around. I agree with some of the reviews the showers are basic but clean. Some people did not clean them down after they used them but we are always considerate of other people. As Lee said in a review if you want glamping go and stay at a 5* hotel this for myself and my husband was great to get away and sit in the evening in front of a fire pit and just chilling. We will be going back for a week or more next year. We are a mature couple just wanting to get away and we did. Keep it up, fantastic.
During August we spent a very enjoyable 10 days at Mill Farm.
On arrival the owner personally meets you and walks you around the site to find suitable pitch. The campsite is very spacious and you have plenty of room to enjoy yourself.
The kids spent many hours in the den and tree house as well as meeting up with others. In the evening the owner organises games for the children in a big field allowing the parent to have some quite time around a camp fire, which the owner also provides.
There are plenty of toilets and showers and we never had to wait
The Poachers Pocket pub is right outside the campsite and is a very friendly and welcoming and offers good beer and food.
We had such a great time that on leaving we have arranged with the owner to go back next year.
On arrival to this site, The campsite owner greeted us warmly and showed us around the site. The owner's enthusiasm and passion for the campsite inspired us! You can tell its not just a job to him. He generally seems keen on making your camping experience an amazing one!
The site was huge, the largest I have ever seen, which is not just a large space; but one which has it's own orchard area (with homely rabbits in), large group areas, safe campfire areas, beautiful water area with lots of fish and moorhens, areas all surrounded by beautiful well cared for trees and blackberry bushes, electrical points, clean bathrooms and showers. And so much more!
My partner and I had a great 3 night stay there with great facilities, a friendly face who gave great ideas for fun days out and lots of peace and tranquillity. A perfect tranquil getaway for all the family! With absolutely amazing prices!
Been here 3 times now and have just returned from a 16 night stay and can honestly say I didn't want to leave. The owner is as other reviews have said a nice genuine down to earth man who will go out of his way to make your visit relaxed and enjoyable.
Other plus points are very spacious pitches of which you can pretty much take your pick and are spread out over at least 4 fields, possibly more, so you never feel on top of one another and gives the kids plenty of room to play without being a nuisance to others.
Cracking little fishing lake for young and old alike to try their hand, absolutely teeming with small fish just waiting to jump on the hook and plenty of larger fish too.
Quite a large inflatable swimming pool for the kids to splash around in and swim a good few strokes and lovely and warm.
As others have said campfires is a nice touch these days in the world of health and safety gone mad. The logs we had burned beautifully and were delivered by the owner to our pitch, another nice touch.
A large games room is there for the children to play in should the weather turn bad (sorry when!).
The site also has a small basic shop with quite a few handy items for sale (gas cannisters, caravan levellers, electric cables, sweets, drinks etc)monies to be paid into the honesty box provided, another nice gesture from the owner.
Local pub is literally 2 minutes from the site, not much of a drinker myself, but we had dinner there one evening and the meals were very enjoyable.
Other people have mentioned the facilities, I personally always found them clean, could always get a shower with nice hot water and loos always had sufficient loo roll, like another reviewer said it is camping guys.
To sum up, a charming campsite with plenty to offer young and old with more of an old school attitude to camping where you can get away from everything and just relax, will definitely be going back.
