This is an amazingly well maintained site, so quiet and relaxing.

The toilet block and facilities are first class.

The location next to the Abbey make for a romantic & atmospheric visit.

River walks are close by, the on site cafe sells locally produced honey.

For a really relaxed break, this is the place.

Great site offering some amazing pitches right beside the Priory ruins. Good walks alongside the river Wear, it really was a stunning location. Tried to walk into Durham following the route the site suggests and at 2 1/4 miles, when we were only half way there, we decided we didn’t really want to do an 8 1/2 mile round trip 😆 I’d say it’s more of a bike ride in. Durham was really beautiful- suggest Vennels and the Riverview Kitchen for some great food in great locations.

Everything was clean and well maintained. Showers really hot with plenty of places to hang your towel and clothes, and a shelf for toiletries.

Had to use our ramps to get level and was right on limit. I’d say that we were on one

Of the most level pitches.

Site was quiet and we were allowed to leave late on the Sunday for no extra fee.

We used it as base to visit friends and family from Carlisle, Newcastle and Northumberland.

Quiet adult only park, very clean facilities, options for grass or hardstanding serviced pitches.

We've been most happy, comfortable & relaxed here & would re-book in a heartbeat.

Staff are friendly & helpful & 2 extra bonus options are that there's a delightful riverside wooded walk as well as the old priory ruins to explore.

There's also a cafe on site.

Lovely location. Very clean and tranquil site.

Cafe and small shop on-site.

Able to walk into Durham - allow at least an hour.

Viewing of the priory ruins are free too and lovely grounds on the river edge.

Very clean facilities. We had one of the pitches directly by the Abbey so a nice view for us. The view the other way is rather like a housing estate of log cabins.

Pitches not very level and the hardstanding area is quite small to aim at. Our pitch wasn't too bad to be fair but I think it'd be quite a challenge to level a van or a camper on some of the pitches.

It's a good walk to either durham or Chester le street but we did both.

Not really any pubs etc in easy walking distance.

After 4 nights we'd definitely done everything we wanted to.

Probably wouldn't go back.

Great location on the river. We live very rural so I suppose it's not a change for us. If you want peace and quiet I'd say its a nice site. Just be prepared to level your outfit

Lovely site, clean and tidy. Chocks available to level your unit as the site is on a gentle slope.

The Abbey on site is a bonus.

The site is handy for visiting Newcastle, only 25 minutes away and Durham is 10 minutes drive.

Lovely spot and we will visit again next time we're in the North East.

Facilities are excellent.

Lots of dog walks on and around the site.

Great site next to the Abbey ruins. Walks across the bridge over the River Weir.

Aldi and Sainsburys close by along with a great fish and chip shop.

Durham is a short drive away with plenty of parking or use the park and ride.

This is a site we would return to if touring the area again.

The site is in a great location in a bend of the river Wear.

Good place if you’re a fisherman. Tickets are available from the site office.

Finchale abbey A English Heritage site is within the grounds of the campsite it’s well worth a look around no charge but a lack of information boards.

Handy location for visiting Beamish Museum and Durham.

Facilities are a little dated but were immaculate and perfectly adequate.

Hosts were friendly and helpful.

 What a gem !

Clean, peaceful, plenty of walks and quiet spaces,

Well appointed facilities, and the tearoom for a snack and a tea or coffee whilst relaxing in the Abbey grounds alongside the river.

We will definitely have this on our list for a return visit.

Finkle Priory is a lovely spot beside a beautiful stretch of the River Wear and the site has everything you need for your motorhome.

Owner Ann and her staff are exceptionally helpful people.

Nice well kept site, friendly welcome from owner,

Showers though a little dated were very clean and adequate.

When we started camping a stand pipe in a corner of a field was all you got so any shower block is great.

The track down to the site might be a bit daunting to new caravanners but with care is fine.

All in all a nice peaceful site would stay again

This was a great, well kept site. We booked online, including giving our registration number so the site barrier would let us in and out.

We were pitched right against the ruined priory, and we were shown around it for free by an excellent English Heritage volunteer Geoff who really brought the place to life.

We also crossed a bridge over the river and went for a lovely walk to the right, up and around the hills and back to the site via some steps.

The river was in full flood and was a good backdrop. We had rain every day that we stayed and still managed to find things to do and visit.

The electricity supply is 10amps not the usual 13, this caused issues for our neighbours who asked us if our supply was tripping off too. We didn't have any cut-outs, but we made sure that we didn't draw more than 10amps at any time.

We went to the Beamish Museum, a couple of museums in Durham via their park and ride, and spent some time on a beach in Seaham collecting waste glass.

We also went to the National Glass Centre in Sunderland and crafted a glass souvenir - which they will fuse then post us ! We ate at the Newton Grange Pub which seemed to be the nearest pub to the site - it was surprisingly booked up even on a Wednesday - would recommend reserving a table. Fine food and reasonable prices :-)

So this site is recommended, but the only caveat is that every time you wish to visit the coast, the journey is tortuous because the river has no bridges and it's a long way around if you wish to travel east.

Oh, and the toilets and shower were spotless throughout.

We didn't meet any members of staff because we booked online and arrived and left without needing any help - even though we stayed for a week.

We stayed here for 2 nights, and liked the friendly relaxed feel to this site.

The facilities were good and we enjoyed a walk around the Abbey which was better preserved than I had expected and interesting.

Dogs can go in, and It's free entry.

It was hot while we were there, and we enjoyed the woodland and riverside walk on the opposite bank. The dog was pleased as further along she was able to take a dip.
