Enjoyed two days at Finchale Abbey, well signposted, welcome and very helpful reception,
Excellent facilities (showers and wash-up incl), free WiFi at reception area,
Good pitches,
1 mile walk to nearest bus stop,
I was given a price discount as a single occupant,
Lovely setting, pedestrian bridge to far side of river, interesting Abbey (free access to campers), great for walking and mountain biking,
Would certainly return and recommend. Suggest mileage sign at main road and bigger sign at reception.

Stayed here last month. Lovely campsite and a very helpful and friendly warden who keeps plenty of brochures of local interest.
There is some nice walks on the river bank and a cafe which sells snacks and drinks with free entry to the priory which is well worth a walk round.
There is a car boot held on a Sunday nearby and the site is near to Beamish and Durham. The shower block and toilets are very well kept and clean.
The site is quiet on a night and I believe campers can use the local golf clubhouse bar on an evening. However after a day sightseeing we choose not to use this so couldn't say what it is like.
I would highly recommend this site when visiting Durham.

Finchale Abbey camp site is well maintained with clean and warm shower blocks, the site has a shop and cafe with a picnic area,
The reception area had good local information available on things to do.
There is a well kept priory ruin by the side of the river where a bridge leads to pleasant woodland walks.
There is a nice pub and super markets within a 10 min drive, I would highly recommend this camp site when exploring Durham and the surrounding area.
The park is dog friendly and has a good dog walking area

Just came back from spending another great bank holiday here. This is the first visit since both toilet blocks have been up graded and what a fantastic job they are great a real credit to the owners. We love this site even though we only live a few miles away. And the £20. 00 a night is real value for money, we are hoping to go back in a couple of weeks. The staff are friendly. There are lovely walks along the river and the woods. There is a retail park which is about 5 minutes drive away which as a sainsburys, marks and spencers and lots of other shops. There is a pub also that serves meals, it does specials like 2 for 1 offers. The lovely Durham city is only 10 minutes away

Only live 20 minutes away never knew that this site was on my door step easy to get to don't let the approach to the site put you off you must remember many years ago the monks would of walked down the same road. This site must be visited to appreciate the views on the approach and when you get down into the site it opens up to a stunning view of the Abbey and the well maintained grounds. There are loads of wildlife such as peacocks, ginnyfowl, doves squirrels and many other varieties. The staff on site have a superb knowledge of the abbey and the surounding area other uses of the site where very friendly. I also have two dogs and the walks along side the river are so peaceful and there is somewhere on the site to take them for a strole if you don't fancy down by the river. The toilet block and showers are well maintained clean and big enough to get in and get dried without any problem. The nearest shops are five minutes away Durham city centre is a must if you haven't been before as it all ties in with the camp site. I'll be going again in three weeks time at the end of the month yipee

Visited over the Easter break. Well laid out site with first rate facilities - brand new for 2012. Shower cubicles are huge with plenty of room to dry and dress. Cleaned regularly. Indoor pot washing - only one sink, but it seems perfectly adequate. Land is slightly sloping, but hard standings provide a level surface and there is plenty of space between the pitches. There are lots of lovely walks available from the site, along the riverbank and through the woods - not to mention the fabulous -picnic area and Finchale Abbey (entrance free). The owners are very helpful and more than willing to go the extra mile to make sure you have a fabulous holiday - my thanks for the miles you went on my behalf thanks to the post (or lack of it!). A word of warning - don't be put off by the approach to the campsite - the WOW factor kicks in as soon as you park to book in!

A nice adults only site in a good location. Near the river for anyone that likes fishing or canoeing and only a few miles from Durham.
We did find that it was expensive considering there is no clubhouse or pub nearby.
The shower blocks were first class, and the abbey ruins can be visited free.
Although it is a site for adults, there are lodges behind the caravan park, and the children from them have access to the site.
If you intend going during the summer this year, stock up with your favourite tipple, as it's a long walk to the nearest pub or shop.

Delightful location - well signposted. Easy to book day before arrival. Able to pick pitch which was level and great views of abbey ruins. Lovely walks by River Wear.
Gents facilities superb - ladies ok'ish.
Some through traffic to lodges at top of site - perhaps speed should be 5 MPH and more speed humps. For adult only some evidence of little people - maybe visiting lodges? Fortunately well behaved and not on bikes.
Some traffic noise from far side of river but this was drowned out by sound of free range peacocks and guinea fowl.

Lovely immaculately maintained site in a stunning location. Adult only, (though visiting children are allowed so don't expect total absence of the little darlings. )
Ruined Priory on site with free admission. (Visit early in the morning before day visitors arrive and you will have it to yourselves).
Very friendly and helpful owners.
We were on a super site which was enormous, lovely not to have water carriers to fill or waste water to empty.
Lovely walks from the site and once other day visitors leave the riverside incredibly quiet.

Very peaceful and quiet, lovely location, all you need is good weather. The site is half tourers and half residential. The touring side is kept very good, clean and tidy, toilets and showers are excellent and very well kept.
The lady owner is very pleasant. There is not much in the way of fresh water fishing in the area although river on site. Supermarket and retail park only 5 mins drive away. Plenty of wild life in and around the site.
The barrier to go in and out of the site needs to be moved or automatic as there is a sleeping policeman of which causes a problem when you want to leave with the caravan on as its a very steep hill, not good for a car and caravan.
Overall site very nice, would we go back probably not as it is 295 miles from home and chose it due to visiting friends near by.

A very peaceful site in a lovely location, yet close to the facilities in Durham.
Despite visiting over the bank holiday weekend the site was busy but remained quiet.
The site owners were helpful in providing information about the history of the Abbey as well as organising a coach to Sunderland for those going to the Take That concert!
The site was clean and tidy with toilet block providing very good facilities.
Certainly worth a visit.
This was our first visit to the North East with a touring caravan and will certainly return to this Adults Only site.

First time at this site and we thoroughly enjoyed out time there.
Adult only site.
Peace is in abundance until the hens or the peacock let 'rip', but that was just a laugh.
Off into Durham, had not been there for years. Plenty of good walks, woods and the river to follow, fishing on site. The Abbey is also on site hence the name.
Clean toilets and showers, very friendly staff, go back? you bet we will.
We even came away with a gift of six fresh eggs courtesy of the owners, wow beautiful yolks.

We have just came back from spending another lovely weekend here, this is a lovely site, for a nice and relaxing break. We had a pitch next to the abbey ruins. The owners are really friendly and helpful the toilets and shower block are always clean with free hot water. The site is now adult only, great if you want a relaxing weekend we always go back. The gents toilets are nearly finished after being up graded, then they are starting on the ladies, in my book that means they are going to be better than they are now as they are great at the moment.
There are plenty of walks along the river Wear any time of year. There is a retail park about 5 minute drive away that has a Sainsbury, George, Next and other well known stores and Durham city is about 10 minutes drive away. There are plenty of dog walks. Be advised you do need transport unless you're really fit as there is a steep hill and a country lane walk to the nearest bus stop.
The staff are very friendly and welcoming. We paid £18.00 per night for a standard pitch which is only 6amp, you pay about £20.00 for a super pitch which has 16amp - you have to pay about £20.00 deposit for an adapter for this. You also have to pay £10.00 deposit for a barrier card which you use for the toilets and for exiting the site.
I would recommend this site. As we go nearly every weekend on a lovely evening there is nothing better than sat outside with a glass of wine looking at the scenery

Visited this site for only one night as it is quite local to us and we wanted to try out our new (second hand) trailer tent.
First impressions were good - the site is quite secure as there is a card controlled barrier for entry/exit, and the staff were helpful and friendly.
We were allowed to choose our own pitch as the site was not full, so we chose a fairly level area. All the pitches are hard-standing and most have 6 amp electric, with a select few super-pitches having 16amp.
On the down side, my husband reliably informs me that the gents showers were not up to scratch, as there was no mop & bucket supplied to clean the floor after a shower, so there was evidence of the previous user of the shower in the cubicle. He also thought that the toilet block in general was in need of a good clean.
The ladies toilets and showers were quite clean in comparison, and I did not feel that there was a problem in the shower area other than the fact that there was nowhere to put my shampoo and shower gel while showering - only the seat by the door, which entailed reaching over and getting everything wet.
The surroundings of the site are beautiful - right next to the Priory, but you have to pass the Frankland Prison to get there.
Very quiet and peaceful site, and adults only which is a plus for us, but a bit too close to home for us to visit again.

Excellent site, though the toilet blocks could do with a little updating.
Super site on concrete pad fantastic.
Peacocks and chickens etc wandering around the site. Excellent for walking the dogs, and also for swimming with the dogs etc in the river.
Only slight negative is that all the lodges etc on site are kep very much away from the tourers.
Supermarket etc less than a 5 min drive from the site which lets you get all required food drink clothings etc that you may need on your holiday. Laundry facilities poor
