Very pleasant 3 night stay at Finchale. Adult only site in beautiful location. Staff friendly without being overbearing.

Price of £22 per night for 2 adults, car, van & awning. 16 amp electric, waste & water supply. You could get cheaper, but electric at only 6 amp due to long-standing dispute with National Trust I believe. Would not recommend these though, as over 3 days, noted many frustrated caravanners trudging out to electric supply and re-setting 'trip-switch'!

Toilet blocks clean, but 'dated'. Shower & toilet cubicles extremely narrow and not suitable for 'wide' people like myself! Did not notice any disabled toilets / shower.

Sainsburys and other large stores within 5mt car ride, but do not be misled, Finchale is isolated in its own beauty beside the Abbey and River Wear.

Will definitely book again and would recommend the site for its efficiency, location and serenity.

We stayed here with a tent in 1977 and again in 1993 and 2009 with a caravan. We returned in the hope of some improvements to the toilet block but were disappointed to find that although clean, they were just the same as on our very first visit.

On our last trip, we didn't manage to get anything more than luke warm water from the showers and although it was July, it happened to be chilly.

The light wasn't working in the washing up area and so if you needed to use it in the evening, you not only couldn't see well, but the water was barely warm. We were warned of the 6 Amp situation which is unfortunate, but we managed. The main attraction is the beautiful location - fantastic setting.

Good dog walk now provided on site, but enjoyable to walk alongside the river too. Although the Abbey attracts visitors, they did not appear to be a problem to campers and the site is quite level. There is a security barrier.

Enjoyed the chickens, peacocks taking their daily strolls. Very rural but not too far to drive to good retail shopping and lovely Durham city is a 15 min drive max.

We visited the site over the Bank Holiday. What a lovely site. Very interesting. Everything that everyone else has said is basically correct. My view of the toilets and showers is very favourable. I have camped hundreds and hundreds of times and I consider myself quite fussy. These toilets are very good and very clean with hot showers whenever needed.

My partner and I decided to walk along the river Wear to Durham city, a lady who lived in one of the Statics said it was about half an hours walk. Sorry but it was five or 6 miles through sometimes rough terrain and it took us 2 quite fit 50 somethings 2 and a half hours. It was a really beautiful walk, well recommended. We didn't see a building until we practically reached the city. Fantastic and so was Finchale Abbey (pronounced Finkle).

If you are looking for an adult only respite from the hustle and bustle this is the site .

We visited this weekend the weather was a mixture of sunshine and rain so this hasn't clouded our judgement at all .

Security was excellent with a barrier system to get in and out, staff very friendly but not intrusive.

Nothing at all to do on site, except admire the scenery and walking unless you are into fishing as the river Wear meanders around the park. We are not fishermen so am not sure about the permits etc.

You can visit the priory which is within the grounds of the park, this is owned by English Heritage and the cost was about £3.50 I think, but to be honest when you are on site you can see pretty much of it anyway.

The pitches are a mix of level and sloping, we were lucky to be on a level pitch.

There is a shop of sorts on the site but it consists of a hole in the wall which serves as a cafe/takeaway and isn't really to be relied upon, we used it to buy milk but I think it was more luck than judgement that there was any for us. The supermarket is a short drive away along with a retail park and a maccie d's if you get desperate !

The only minor criticism was the showers - this has been mentioned before, they are very clean but they are also old fashioned and very small, you get an allotted measure of hot water and have to press a button which is inside a hole in the wall to get another measure. The water pressure also leaves a bit to be desired, and even at this time of year they were quite chilly wouldn't fancy it in the colder months! That said the toilets were always clean and there was always plently of hand soap and toilet roll available.

A place we will definitely return to it was just what we were looking for a perfect haven of peace and tranquillity.

Just recently visited Finchale abbey in our caravan nice site, lovely views. Good access to Durham and surrounding areas. Good pub and food about a mile away advise taking car good 45min walk, supermarket near pub .Only downside to site is the toilet block, with it being December on our visit the blocks were not warm enough and even though showers were hot they were a bit out of the ark in need of a upgrade, also too dark. We contacted the site on this and was told they were going to try and make improvements in the new year. But nice find very peaceful.

This site location is beautiful next to Finchale Abbey and the river. There was plenty of space and you could choose your own pitch. There were lots of wildlife like peacocks roaming around which our son loved. Very relaxing location.

However, there were a number of things which we were very disappointed about. The electricity supply of 6 amps was terrible. You could not even boil a kettle without the trip switch kicking in. We were not the only ones to experience this as we regularly saw the people either side going to the fuse box.

The toliet block was very disappointing and in need of a good clean and paint. They were also in need of an air freshener. The showers were disappointing as I had a shower in the males block and another camper was using the other shower. We were left with little more than a trickle of water. In the end I had to agree with the other person not to use the shower so that he could wash the soap out of his hair.

The play area was old equipment and a slide and climbing frame but I believe it will soon become adults only so understand there reluctance to update it.

Reasonably priced location close to Durham Town Centre and attractions. Also a super market was close by which was really helpful.

My wife and I stayed at the site for two nights over the bank holiday. It was a wonderfully kept and well tended site but was very busy (but what can you expect on a bank holiday! :-) )

The peacocks and chickens do start early but that's par for the course on a country site plus why sleep-in in this beautiful county.

Most of the staff very helpful

Overall it was a great stay at this small site

A nice site with modern clean facilities. Handy for Durham and Newcastle cities. On site there is a shop and cafe which are reasonably priced. The location is nice, with lots of woodland and the river passing through the site, as well as the priory, which is set on the site itself. The place is fairly isolated, with nearest pubs and shopping anout a ten minute drive away. Prices were ok: £16 per unit with EHU for 2 people. Would use again.

Visted Finchale over the Easter Bank Holl, the site is lovely, very senic and until a HUGE motorhome parked in front of our pitch we had great views of the Priory.

The weather was not kind but the snow just added to the atomesphere of the site. Though I would say the site is not level and we needed a lot of chocks under the van to level it up and when the wind blew we knew about it!

The toilets were clean though there was no hot water for the showers.

There are some lovely walks from the site suitable for all ages, though the ducks were a bit timid, the peacocks and hens were very friendly.

The play area is basic and a bit to close to the river for my liking but supervised play was great.

Durham was not far away and the park & ride is about 5 mins away.

We would deffinatly return, but maybe on a less windy weekend.

Found this to be an excellent site, Good for touring this area, handy for Beamish and the Tanfield Railway. Really good immaculate facilities. Open all year and dogs allowed. Enjoyed seeing the peacocks etc and the abbey - shame that wasn't open. The site is close to the motorway and though you can hear the traffic the beautiful surroundings make up for it. One site we would definitely recommend and we will be visiting again when the abbey is open.

Have just got home from Finchale Abbey and found the site clean,The pitches were not level but you could pick your own.

Toilets and showers were clean and water hot. The water in the wash room for your pots and pans was only just warm.

After a few days you get use to the noise of the cockerels in the mornings. The only thing to bug me was the cars that go up and down the road in the middle of the touring park to the static park at the top of the site, these people seemed to ignore the speed limit and started early morning and went on to late evening, so do not pitch near the road.

Apart from that we had a good week away at Finchale.

Ps we would go back again in the future

Visited this area for the first time and found this site.  Very lovely and tranquil site set in the grounds of the old ruins of Finchale Abbey.  You have to pay to visit the abbey.  Lot of noise at first light from the Peacocks and Cockerels.  Everything was very clean and the walks by the river were lovely.  Not very much in the area for the tourists.  We visited Beamish and felt that we had covered everything.  The site is right next to a prison so is a bit off putting on the approach but once you turn onto the road into the site you feel you are in the middle of the countryside.  Security guard was rarely seen and then only to sort out problems reported from the lodges.  They are very strict about dogs being kept on the lead at all times.  I would definitely recommend the site if you want a quiet relaxed break away from it all.

When we got there, very luckily, as our sat nav took us to the wrong side of the river and we couldn't get across the foot bridge with the car and caravan,  we were greeted by some friendly peacocks and first impressions were good.
The staff were helpful too, showed us to our pitch and give us a hand getting caravan into position.

Pitches seemed to be all hard standing although not all were level. There wasn't any litter lying around and the toilets were clean and tidy.  Think they have had a recent makeover but should build some new ones if you ask me, but they were OK.

Park for the kids was in need of a major update, think I played on climbing frame when I was kid.  Didn't seemed to worry the kids to much.  Would have been better if it was nearer the caravans too, so you could keep an eye on the kids.

Some nice walks along the river, would have been nicer if it wasn't raining non-stop.  Its also close to Durham, Newcastle, MetroCentre etc.

Overall I would I would give it 7/10, probably more if we had seen a bit sun during the weekend.  Probably give it another go because its only 20 mins from where I live and was gutted I didn't get to play in the river (too rough).

Just come back from five days of pure heaven. Lovely peaceful campsite in a beautiful location. Warm welcome on arrival, pick your own pitch be warned you may need your levellers. Toilets immaculately clean .(thank you to the lady who cleans them -she has a vast knowledge of info about the area) showers basic but free and hot.
Fantastic river to play in two minutes away from touring field and children's play area next to river.
Lots to do in area -Beamish Durham etc

Location is excellent - close to park and ride, by a lovely river perfect for children to play in, fishing from site, new retail centre a few minutes drive with Sainsburys and M&S Food. Abbey ruins are lovely - small shop selling very welcome ice creams - no milk (except UHT) or bread or other basics - be warned! Cafe too doing snacks and chips etc. Basic play area but children loved it.

On the downside the refurbishment of the toilets does not seem to have included the showers. Very old, still with 20p slots although now free. Cabins all on one level so whole place gets wet! Water warm though. Building did not feel especially warm and I bet it is cold in winter! All taps had to be pressed for water - kept pressed to keep flow. Penny pinching and really annoying! Lots of older children messing around toilets late at night - especially over bank holiday - no security. 2 power cuts (to toilet block only, not hook ups) when we were there though that can happen anywhere! Take a torch just in case. Seems to be moving increasingly towards statics - some already located at top of site and woe betide anyone who ventures in to have a wee walk about!

Within easy reach of Durham, Beamish and Raby Castle.
