A beautiful, quiet site backing on to the Finchale Abbey ruins. The site wardens were excellent, always cheerful and gave welcome guidance on places to visit. There is even an excellent pub within 2 mins drive providing good evening/all day meals with a two for one offer, and they had a full gluten free menu! We had a fantastic week and will return to continue our exploration of the stunning Durham county. Many thanks.

We have just come back from 10 days at this wonderful site. We were welcomed warmly and directed to our designated pitch by the abbey ruins. With a bit of help from our chocks we were soon up and running in the blessed shade of the tree. ( it was the heatwave). The toilet blocks were great. Plenty of room in the cubicles and always clean when we used them. We had a few problems with the tv but in the end it didn't matter as we had plenty of dvds and played cards and scrabble. There were many areas to walk the dog, even around the abbey, which was free to site members. The site gave discount vouchers to many attractions which was useful. So much to see from there but our top picks were The Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle (plenty of shade for the dog in the car park)and the NT Wallington(very dog friendly). There is a Marston 2for1 pub about one and a half miles away. Will certainly be back next time we take a trip in Durham.

My wife and I and three small dogs have just enjoyed 3 great days stay here.
This Wonderful site is situated. Just outside Durham along side the river Wear and Finchale Priory.
This site is at a very high standard that we would definitely rate at 5 star plus.
It has full EHU for Caravans And Motorhomes good level concrete pitches.
The toilet and shower block is excellent with really good shower facilities
The staff are very friendly and helpful
As this is adults only it is a very peaceful place.
Some wonderful walks down by the riverside with small sandy areas to observe the views.
It was a wonderful experience and have to say the best site we have ever stayed at an we will definitely return for a longer stay next time.

This is a beautiful site with a great location to visit County Durham. We stayed for 9 nights and took the site up on the offer of staying 7 nights and getting 1 night free and you also get a 25% discount to the Beamish Museum if you stay more than 2 nights. We arrived on a Friday and stayed till the following Sunday. The pitches are really uneven and so you need chocks for most pitches. If you are staying in the C section then C1 and C8 are the best pitches for the Abbey. Pitches B1 and B2 are good service pitches if you are willing to pay the price. We stayed in section C has we did not believe it was worth paying the extra money. The water taps, grey water and toilet waste is up at the top near the shower blocks. I would recommend a tap is placed in Section C as soon as possible. The female shower block consists of 4 toilets with 1 sink, 2 showers and 2 areas for a quick wash or to do your make up and 1 disabled area. I can confirm that improvements have been made to the block from previous reviews I have read, the 2 showers both have shower curtains, a shelf, a 3 tier rack, a hook on the door and a seating area, but the improvements which need to be made as soon as possible is the water pressure is very little and needs turning up, the temperature to so say is luke warm wood be generous and although the push button system does stay on longer than any other site I have been to it is a really small size to find. The male block consists of the same with the same problems. The site was not very busy but still you had to time it right so you didn't have to wait for the showers with only been 2, unfortunately on a weekend there's nothing you can do you just have to wait. The site has a lovely peacock which will visit your van on a evening for feeding and can be heard throughout the day around the park along with the birds. We really enjoyed walking on an evening around the park and through Cocken Wood. This is advertised as a adult only site and is why we decided to pay so much to stay but this is not the case, pitches had family visiting all day with children running around the site and nothing is done through the week or on a weekend when it is worst. Recommend that if you are keeping this site has adult only then the rules need to be enforced and a warden needs to check the site a couple of times a day at least. The Abbey is a beautiful place and everyone has the right to enjoy it and the surrounding wood land but on a weekend you can hear all the children as the touring park is right next to it, just bear this is mind when booking. The location is ideal for visiting Country Durham and the surrounding areas. Within 2 miles is the Arnison Center which has a variety of shops Lidl, Sainsbury, Boots, Costa Coffee etc. If the changes above were made it would really improve the site.

Management response: Mrs Walker Thank you for this Review I would just like to clarify a few points that you have remarked on
Firstly living as close to the Priory has its down's as well as its up's, one being that we are a scheduled site. This means that to do any ground works of any kind, is a criminal offence so adding water to the C plots & alter the lay of the land for the unlevelled plots is impossible, therefore we supply chocks.
As members of the NTB and graded every year, the water stands have never been a issue as the toilet block is within 100 meters .
We are adult only, fortunately we do not run the park like sergeant majors watching to see if anyone is doing wrong!! We do get the odd grandparent trying to slide the children on for a visit, if we get a complaint about it, we will ask them to leave
Being as close to the Abbey / Priory you do hear the children through the day (holidays /weekends ) but as it closes at 5pm we are soon back to Tranquillity.
We are very lucky in County Durham to have so many attraction to visit and we are please you enjoyed them.
It would have been nice for you to have raised your concerns while you were on the park. Having said that It gives us the opportunity to inform others through your review
Kind regards
Ann |

This site has a no children policy which is great as no hordes of free range children running wild.
The only thing running wild is the peacock, pheasants and guineafowl looking for titbits of food.
The site is located in a pretty river vally next to the ruins of Finchale Priory next to the River Wear.
Some great walks through the woods and next to the river.
Friendly staff, night security provided as well.
The toilet block is clean with good facillities.
A motorhome service point is available, no hose pipe provided though so bring your own-not a bad thing when you think about it, how many times do you pick a hose pipe up off the floor to use it.
There is a dog walking area with poo bags provided.
The pitches are all hard standing with plenty of space between units, some of them are quite steep sloped, extra wood chocks are avalable on site.
This site is handy for visiting Durham City and surounding area tourist imformation leaflets are available at the office.
Great site.
Please keep the no children policy.

Excellent site for visiting Durham.
Picturesque location by the River Wear with lots of interesting bird life about.
Enjoyed watching the Goosanders diving.
The staff on site were friendly and very helpful.
Excellent level site.
Toilet/showers new and immaculate and nice warm showers in large cubicles which allowed room to move for a change.
Couldn't fault it and will return.
What more could you want?

Lots of room
Super Dog friendly
Really friendly staff
Gorgeous river walks
Short drive to Sainsburys and Lidl
Utterly beautiful part of the country
Pretty pretty pretty

Had heard great things about this site and, certainly, the location is beautiful. Toilets look as if they've had a lot of money spent on them and were certainly very clean. However, the water pressure was really dreadful and the lack of shower curtains in the ladies showers was a pain in the neck. They were, however, in the mens's showers - what's that about? We asked, on arrival, for a level pitch and, despite the site being virtually empty, we were put on what I can only describe as a motorhome stop-over pitch on what felt like a car park, right beside the main entrance to the gated residential site! I felt like I was camping in Ikea car park! After half an hour of about 20 cars passing up and down to the residential area, we had had enough and I requested a move to a quieter pitch. The owner (very nice lady actually) seemed a bit surprised but didn't ask why and we moved. The pitch wasn't quite as level but it was certainly much better. Generally speaking, while this was a nice site, it seemed a bit souless and definitely lacking something. Not sure I would go back again.

We stayed at Finchale Abbey for 3 nights and will definitely be returning again. The route into the Abbey was easy to find and navigate and the pitches were well spaced. The toilet block was clean and functional.
Staff are very friendly and we were given a 25% discount off a visit to Beamish museum as we stayed for more than 2 nights. Durham is only a short drive away.
The surrounding area is beautiful. We were pitched right in front of the Abbey and there are wonderful walks along the river. I will be recommending this site to my friends!

Perfect site for American RVs. There are 3 pitches which are static van concrete bases which offer full and easy plumbing and electric connections for big rigs. Access is a little narrow for the last section, and there is a low 12'6' bridge which can't be avoided. The site is beautifully maintained in superb rural setting with the bonus of Finchale Abbey in immediate view. Only a short drive to Durham P & R which has a section for motor homes. Supermarkets also close by. Ideal stopover from the A1 or for a longer stay to explore the area. Adults only.

Just spent 4 days at this fabulous site, would have stayed longer if weather had not turned nasty. The site is well located for visiting Durham and surrounding area and the showers and toilet block are excellent. There is also fishing on the site which pleased hubby, and a good dog walking area which pleased Tess. There is a bus stop a mile away where you can get a bus into Durham

This was our second visit to this site and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and in fact extended it by an extra night. The owners and their team are extremely nice people and are all very helpful.
The site is very clean and well policed although not by big brother tactics. It is adults only and while we were there, a child appeared with parents and I assume they were asked to remove the child because it disappeared promptly. Nothing against kids, I have four but rules are rules.
The toilet block is not large but is very clean, well kept and entered by a combination lock.
My only criticism and I have pointed this out directly to the owners is that the new all service pitches are inhibited because of the sloping nature of them, this making grey waste disposal something of a problem. It won't stop me returning there but I would try to get one of the old all service pitches which are massive, concrete and level.
The site is very well located for Durham City and the A1M. The latter means that many places are within easy reach.
There is a Sainsburys supermarket less than 5 minutes drive away in a complex with many other shops and petrol.
There are many pubs and restaurants within 20 minutes drive and are too many to mention. However within 5 minutes there is a pub with good beer and decent food, Newton Hall I believe. In Framwellgate Moor a good pub, the Happy Wanderer and 2 minutes drive from there, a very good Indian Takeaway and an equally good fish and chip shop Frams I think. They are both in the same street. There are two or three Chinese takeaways nearby but I have no experience of these.
Beaches: Seaham is about 13 miles away. Seaburn and Roker, (Sunderland) are about the same distance. There are many good beaches up the Northumberland coast many of which I have visited but check some out if you have time.
Get down to Finchale and enjoy, I hope these comments help.

We recently spent 2 nights on this site. Although the location is beautiful we found there were two levels of pitches. We were allocated T5 which has a great view but the grass around was not cut and there were thistles etc plus the water point was surrounded by thistles. The drain point is to high if using long pipes, as you cannot get a drop on them to drain properly.
On the rest of the site the grass was lovely and short.
Our neighbour on site had heard that the T pitches were for visiting 'workmen' so perhaps that is why.
Please note T pitches are not shown on the site layout either. Go for the ones down by the abbey.
As I said previously the site is otherwise lovely its just that these little things could be altered to make it really great for all visitors

We stayed here for 4 nights at the beginning of July in our small campervan with our dog. We pitched next to the abbey which was lovely, the only downside was the amount of cars going up and down the hill to the permanent residents area. The toilet and shower areas were clean, but I agree with another visitor that the ladies showers needed a shower curtain between the shower and the door to keep your clothes dry, as in the mens. Also, if you showered at night in the dark, the light would turn off after a while! The abbey and surrounding area was perfect for us and the dog, although it was easier to get him into the water then out. He thoroughly enjoyed his time and watching the peacock and guinea fowl kept him occupied. The staff and owner were exceptionally friendly and we attended their annual charity event after being invited on our arrival. If you visit next year at the same time as their charity do, please attend, you will thoroughly enjoy it and it's all for a good cause. We will definitely go again!

Thoroughly enjoyed our first, 3 night stay at Finchale Abbey. Gentle sloping site. Very peaceful apart from the very vocal resident peacock! Excellent dog walking. The priory is fabulous to look at every day of your stay. Husband wanted to fish the Wear but it rained so heavily on our arrival day & night that it was up over 2ft & chocolate brown coloured which wasn't ideal conditions but still a lovely place to fish if the weather is in your favour. Although the toilet / shower block was clean, I was disappointed with the ladies showers as I expected them to have a shower curtain to divide the cubicle & to keep my things dry, which they didn't have although, my Husband said that the mens did. We hope to return.
