What a great family friendly campsite! I can’t fault it.
I stayed there for two nights (10th - 12th August 2012), with my 8 year old son, two friends and their two children (aged 8 years and 3 years).
The campsite is in quite a beautiful setting, surrounded by trees and fields with a small river running along side it. You can occasionally hear the road in the distance, but this is not really an issue as it is drowned out most of the time by the relaxing sound of the flow of the water in the river.
Budle Bay Campsite is very child friendly. There is a small play area for the children, consisting of some swings, a climbing frame and a slide. They owners don't allow campers to be packed in like sardines and thus there are some open spaces for playing football etc. However, the children simply adored playing in the river! We couldn't get them out! Ensure you take swimwear or some old clothing for them to wear, as our children became rather muddy!
The owners were lovely and very helpful. They regularly carry out walkabouts around the site, which I found quite comforting. It's nice to know that they care enough about their site and campers to do this. Not many do! My son had forgotten his football and they were kind enough to lend him one for the duration of our stay. They also provided us with a map for the Budle Bay coastal walk. We walked to Bamburgh and back, which is around 2. 5 miles away if you follow the road or 3 (?) miles if you take the Budle Bay Coastal walk back, which we did. We also visited Lindisfarne Nature Reserve, which is only a short walk away.
If you’re a fan of wildlife, you’ll love this site! Whilst there, we were lucky enough to spot dear and rabbits in the field on the other side of the river. At dusk, because our tent was next to the river, many bats flew around above, some of them swooping quite low and close! At night we could hear an owl and through the day many different species of bird were spotted.
There is a small shop at reception that sells some basics, such as milk, insect repellent (which is required if you’re prone to being bitten), citronella candles and other odds and ends. For this we were very thankful. We ran out of gas for our stove, so they opened reception in order for me to purchase some (it was after opening hours).
There are large toilet facilities and five shower rooms at the back. They are basic (it's all you need!) but kept clean and are surprisingly warm. Plenty of toilet rolls were provided and there was always soap in the dispensers. The showers are free and hot and the shower rooms warm.
There are also laundry facilities, but we did not use them, so can't comment. They appeared sufficient.
This site is easy to get to if you don’t own a car. None of us drive and thus had to use public transport. This was not an issue, as the 501 (Newcastle to Berwick) bus runs fairly frequently from the Haymarket and drops you off at the campsite gates. Tickets are £6 for an adult and £3 for a child. There is no actual bus stop, so when catching the bus back to Newcastle you have to flag it down. Budle Bay Campsite is listed on the bus timetable.
The owners and clientele were very warm, friendly and welcoming. It was lively in the evenings (bbqs, kids playing etc) but quiet once dark. This site has such a wonderful atmosphere. I can safely say that the adults and children enjoyed every moment of staying on this site. The children even made some new friends!
In conclusion, I would recommend Budle Bay Campsite to families and to anybody who appreciates the beautiful Northumberland coastline.

What a wonderful campsite! We have tried almost all of the alternative campsites in the area and none compare to this site for us. The welcome was so personal and attentive. The pitch was ideal and for my daughter, the rope swing over the river made a great campsite perfect.
Thank you to Jane, who made us feel we were going to love the place from the first booking phone call. We will definitely be back!

This is a lovely site, mainly flat with very generous pitches. The toilets and showers are a little 'tired' but are kept nice and clean and there was always plenty of hot water.
What really makes this site special are Jane and Alan who run it they could not be more friendly and accommodating and nothing is too much trouble!
There are a few campsites in the surrounding area but we'll be coming back to this one because of them!

We have just returned from budle bay camp site. It was only our 2nd time camping so we are very new at this.
On arrival we were met and greeted by the park wardens jane and alan. They were excellent and throughout our stay helped us when we needed us and shared useful tips and advice for future trips.
There was a slight problem in that we had an electric hook up yet we were on the wrong pitch, it wasn't an issue at all, jane and alan refunded this immediately and offered us a battery operated lamp. They appeared to be helpful and friendly to everyone creating a good atmosphere on the site.
The toilets and showers are basic but fine, as a nervous novice camper I expected to dislike them but it really was ok!
My 2 year old son loved it, the site was safe for him to play, he loved throwing stones into the river, this occupied him for hours along with the play area.
I would visit this site again. Good location for a laid back break.

Last minute decision to go over to the NE. Stayed in their 'Eco Tents', very impressed - warm and well laid out. Felt a bit of a wimp as the weather was better than expected so could've tented easily.
We were made very welcome on arrival, site is lovely, well laid out and plenty of space. Kids loved the play area and of course the rope swings.
'eco tents' are glammed up sheds but with electric supplied (not obvious on the website) - communal cooking hut is very new and well equipped.
The nearby beach at Bamburgh is a 5 min drive - one of the best beaches we've enjoyed - beautiful!
Will be recommending the site to all and sundry!
Facilities are the weakest point - they look 'well used' but are perfectly functional and clean. With younger kids would be wary of the riverbank but we were more than comfortable to let our gang roam and enjoy.

As novice campers we were a bit worried about what to expect but thoroughly enjoyed our time here. Alan and Jane were very welcoming especially to our 3 year old who were rewarded with a wave on leaving.
We were given a choice of two pitches and chose a sheltered pitch which was ideal. The showers and toilets were clean and there was always hot water and were lit at night.
The surrounding area is beautiful and there is plenty to see. We will definitely return again.

This is a great site. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Even though this is a popular and busy tourist area, this site maintained a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere (and there were lots of people staying). There is good space around each pitch and very plentiful taps and electricity spots.
The showerblock was adequate - plenty of hot water. A stream runs through the grounds with a rope swing - great fun!
There is loads to see in the area; we enjoyed Banburgh Castle and a visit to Lindisfarne (the site staff will help you with safe crossing times as it is cut off with high tide).

Had a fantastic five nights here at the beginning of the school holidays with 3 children aged 8 to 1.
The wardens are immensely friendly and helpful and ever present on the site, can't fault them at all.
The site itself is about 90% flat, with only one small field at the top being on a bit of a slope.
There is a stream running down one side (with a rope swing for the kids) and it is surrounded by trees. Really lovely little spot.
Very basic amenities, but hot free showers and enough toilets and washing up sinks even at this fairly peak time.
Lovely friendly, family feel and the children had a fantastic time. There is a small play area, but there is also a wooded area and a stream that probably pleased them more.
The site could be improved upon by tidying up the bin areas and enclosing them so you don't have to look at them all, that said there were ample bins.
Only other fault would be that there seemed to be an issue with flushing in the ladies toilets as I very regularly and in a number of the toilets found a not nice so surprise waiting for me. I was told by my other half that there wasn't an issue in the gents though.
That said overall superb, would definitely, definitely go back. If you like back to basics camping (though electric readily available) in a pretty location close to some lovely beaches and castles, this is for you.
Small shop on site and a coop about a 10min drive away.

We received a very warm and witty welcome by Jenny at the campsite and our stay was very pleasant.
The campsite is very friendly and cosy, river running along it, nice soft grass to put up the tent, water points frequently through the campsite, friendly for dogs and kids.
Toilet and bathroom facilities are basic and a little old looking, but work fine and no problem with them. Lovely views from the campsite into the surrounding fields and a lovely walk to Bamburgh - about 30 minutes.
We stayed during our Bamburgh Sprint triathlon weekend and did a bit of road cycling the day after. I have sent Jenny a gpx file of the 35mile route we did, so if you have navigation for bikes and want to do a nice scenic route with a stop at the most amazing, spooky castle I have ever seen (this is a surprise), then just ask Jenny to send you the file.
Its best to ring the campsite to book rather than email. Also, make sure that you agree late arrival if you want to get there after 6pm.

Myself, partner and 3 young children had a fantastic stay at this site. The wardens certainly make it with their friendly considerate manner and kindness. We will be returning just to say hello to them!
We were pitched at the back of the site on a lovely flat pitch away from the other tents. It was by the river but this was explained and the wardens were clearly aware of the dangers with children. I knew our little ones would be fine and the privacy of the pitch meant they went to bed early undisturbed by the other kids! There was a fenced area away from the river if this would be a concern for anyone.
The play park was good for the kids and the rope swing fun for all! The girls also enjoyed paddling in the river. Despite being the first weekend of the school holidays the site was not too busy and so lots of space for running around.
The toilets and showers are as mentioned by others basic but are kept so clean that it really isn't an issue at all. They are more than adequate.
The area is stunning and we had fun walking up to 'Rapunzel's Tower' that we could see from our tent. Visited the Farne Islands and Bamburgh beach.
A very friendly site, made by the wardens. We will definitely be returning and would recommend.
