The stone built washrooms were excellent, the ones in the main part of the site were less so.
Kitchen area well appointed and the washing machine room was an added bonus.
The addition of a games room for the children situated away from pitches was a great idea, keeping those younger minds quietly occupied always a great idea.
This was our second stay at Mortonhall but we were disappointed on this occasion.
I booked six night's back in January for August 8 - 15th.
The pitch we were allocated was a in the bus park (pitch 5).
It was awful, a circle of large hardcore with pitches not numbered and no grass.
Parked there was a full size bus with it's contents including furnishings out on benches.
We asked to move and were told that our allocated pitch should have been near the building work that was going on and we had been moved to get us away from the noise. We were still 15m within earshot of it so this didn't make sense.
It was proving difficult for the member of staff to move us. I said that we could go on a grass pitch if there was no hardstanding one's available but was told our mh was too big. It's 7. 6m. She did in the end move us and we had a much better pitch, all be it on a slope. However there were huge mh's of 9m or more behind us on grass pitches!
Misinformation was given often by different staff members.
Although the site was supposed to be full (turned up with a problem with our mh a day early and was charged £41 for the night in the overspill car park) many spaces stayed empty the whole of our six night stay.
Showers, toilet and sinks in each room seem like a good idea but they are not clean. One door swollen with the damp and I got stuck in it (thank you to the gentleman who pushed the door in for me to escape). Toilet seats are loose and it has dirty floors in many of them. I stayed on the site for two days within view of the facilities and never saw anyone cleaning them and never when I was using them.
We did not like the mixed block either.
The bins are not sufficient for the amount of people staying in that area and one day they were not emptied but the gulls had food for the day!
Someone came and tidied up but the bins were still overflowing and not emptied!
The biggest problem is the total apathy to security.
I must have missed the information about a bike store but that should not alter the fact that the management know their is a huge problem with bike theft and appear to accept this as the 'norm'!
An attempt at stealing our e bike batteries and then sawing through a cable to steal the bikes was met with stroppyness and "we've got a bike store". No looking at cctv (camera close to our pitch) or even logging the attempt.
On the positive. The site has a good shop, wine expensive but good selection of products.
This site needs a new manager, one who is dynamic, caring and customer focused. After all at £41 per night for a motorhome with two adults it is not exactly cheap, but staying here it felt like a budget site.
If things improved I would consider returning. via mobile
This is our usual site for visiting Edinburgh. We do this most years, for the rugby or the exhibitions, but we're usually here in the autumn - not just before the Festival.
If it wasn't for the handy bus into town, the excellent farm shop at the entrance, and the many varied (dog) walks on the hills and in the estate - none of which are "thanks to" the site - I doubt that we'd come back.
We certainly won't come back in mid summer again, as the site was rammed, with most MHs stopping one night only, arriving late and leaving early; we had to move our chairs to let vehicles pass between us and the next pitch to reach the row behind.
Facilities struggled with the numbers (maybe due to the lower toilet block still being rebuilt); always queues for toilets and showers; blocked toilets; flooded "wet rooms"; overflowing bins; queues for the central MH service point that blocked the access road (please install a drive over drain! there'd be no need to waste time manoeuvring over a metal cover that's anyway too heavy to lift safely).
Finally, we had a sloping pitch as usual and had to go up 200mm onto the chocks, with a nasty experience reversing off when the chocks skidded forwards on the wet loose gravel before we were off them.
Staff are pleasant. Friends reported the on-site eatery is "just pub food".
Yes we'll be back because of the bus etc, but out of season only from now on and possibly on grass as those pitches are flatter.
The site is reasonably close to Edinburgh and there are bus services running frequently. We stayed to go to the Fringe.
The good point is the Stables Restaurant was really good, welcoming staff and good food and drink.
The bad points were, we were given a pitch number of N2 and given a map. The site is massive compared to others we have stayed in. There were no markings for N. We saw Pitch markings, D, H, I, J, but no N. We went around the site 3 times and had to ask other campers if they knew where it was. Eventually a helpful person, showed us where it was. He was in I and it was a few pitches from him. There was a stone in the grass with N2 on it, but you could hardly make it out.
The pitch was really sloping, and we were afraid the caravan was going to run down the hill. There seemed to be people camping all over the place, no set spots, just park and camp where you wanted, or it appeared that way.
There was a van backed really close to us, so when we opened the door, they were there. What about Health and Safety standards. I thought you were supposed to be a certain distance away. Not enough electric points, people were wandering around trying to find an electric point.
The toilet block by us was abysmal. Unisex toilets and showers. There were queues to use toilets and showers as the toilet and shower were in the same cubicle.
There were no separate toilets and when you went to the toilet, the floors were soaked from the shower, as there was no curtain. Apparently there were some further down the field, so I am only commenting on the ones by where we were.
It is the worst site I have ever stayed at. It was extremely busy but then it was August bank holiday. Certainly will give this one a miss in future.
Very good easy access to site from the ring road and on arrival were warmly welcomed. Very smart reception and shop which was well stocked. We were given our pitch number and directions to it.
I've some positive and negative observations about this site but will start with the fact that I liked every positive enough to return in the future. A very popular busy site with all pitch types available for your needs or budget.
We were amongst a mass of varied outfits from motorhomes, campervans, caravans and tents of all shapes and sizes but there was lots of space, it felt roomy, light and airey. There was a good ambience about the site.
There is an on site bar which serves food but booking is essential during busy periods. We had a lovely meal there which with drinks was reasonably priced. There are play areas for the children.
Public transport is really close by the entrance to the site for services into the city centre. Now for my negatives.
The facilities blocks were at best useable if desperate. I found them dirty, neglected almost and badly in need of a refurb. This is a must for the top block which was unisex. There was shower curtains missing and all the loo seats were loose. I used my own facilities which is fine.
The motorhome service point if you can call it that was not at all conveniently placed and the taps leaked. A chemical waste point is situated here also but was not accessible if someone was getting water and it was in an open and prominent position. Emptying the loo is a job that needs doing but discreetly if you will, not in full view of everyone.
The only other elsan point was in the bottom of the site undercover somewhat at the side of the slightly better facilities block. However, the floor was covered in folk's waste sadly. I don't hold the wardens or maintenance teams responsible for this as patrons should respect each other enough to clean up after themselves. We were pitched at the top of the site next to the roadway through the site.
There is work going on and some statics are situated uppermost. The speed cars and contractors vehicles far exceeded the 10 mph limit passing our van so our stay wasn't as peaceful as it could have been with engines revving up and down not to mention also about children playing safely.
Overall, we will return here. We loved the site. I hope the owners invest in the facilities, provide more chemical disposal points, improve the cleanliness of the facilities (which were regularly visited by staff but I'm not convinced their standards were very high) and fix the leaking taps/broken toilet seats so that what they do provide is fit for purpose. I did report issues to the staff at reception but nothing was done whilst we were there.

Please don’t be put off by the review that says “This site allows travellers” - a manager on another site told us a big group drove onto his pitches, stayed several days & left without paying. Like Mortonhall, there was no security barrier. We’ve come here for many years, and never had any issues.
Warm welcome; the manager readily (& sympathetically) refunded the Dog element of our booking because she’d been put to sleep the day before.
We favour the autumn run up to Christmas when the site is quiet (it’s rammed full during the Edinburgh Festival); there are plenty of things to see & do in town; a very convenient no. 11 bus goes along Princes Street & down to Water of Leith; plenty of great walks from the site & the autumn colour is lovely; the rugby is on at Murrayfield!; and there’s an excellent farm food shop at the entrance. This time we heard owls nearby, which was a bonus. Some of the facilities were closed for refurbishment so there was a slightly longer walk to the other toilets & showers.
Pitches are allocated largely by MH length & unless your unit is very long, you will probably get a sloping pitch. Chocks are essential. via mobile
We hired one of their static caravans for a week's holiday. The caravans are very modern, warm and comfortable with a good kitchen, and TV/dvd player. They are sited at the top end of the site, which is green and spacious. They also offer camping pods and shepherds huts, as well as many spaces for tourers and tents.
The site is very popular, moreso with motorhomes and caravans for the time we were there- late Autumn. I had a quick look at the toilets/showers (although our static had their own, so we didn't use) and there are about 4-5 blocks spread out throughout the site. One block was mixed sex and wet room style, but smelt rather dour (pipes?), the other blocks were single sex and some of these were also wet room style. The nicest block was by the Stables, which felt warmer and had piped music. There are plans to update a block of loos and it looked like work had already started on this. As a tent camper, I think these facilities could be quite stretched in busier times.
We used the launderette but there is a strict 10kg weight limit on machines and it didn't look near enough full for a commercial machine. It didn't start, stating an error code, but then when I took some items out it worked fine. The site also has a useful campers kitchen (extra payable) and TV room which I know is very handy if you are travelling in a hiker style tent or using one of their pods.
The on site shop is useful, and the Stables bar was nice for a drink although we didn't eat here. Inside is quite small so booking would be advisable in winter/bad weather. There are also a few play areas on site. At the edge of the site within walking distance, there is a garden centre and farm shop for more choice.
It's set about 3-4 miles on the south of Edinburgh and really easy to find. There is notable road noise for the majority of the time and it was also quite windy, so I think it's fairly exposed.
We got the bus from the end of the lane into Edinburgh. I downloaded an app and bought both family and adult single tickets via this, which are activated as you get on the bus. I'm not the best 'app person' but managed this well. The bus takes a while, but it was nice to not have to drive all the time.
From the site, we visited The Rosslyn chapel, HMY Britannica, Portobello beach, various sites in Edinburgh such as the National museum, the surgeon's museum and the Scottish parliament, The Falkirk wheel, Kelpies and Stirling, as well as a hike up to Arthur's seat.
Booked for a weekend on a fully serviced pitch. Very attractive site with mature trees and wide open spaces.
We didn't use the facilities as we use our own, but the chemical waste points were easy enough and fairly clean (one was locked off however which forced a bit of a walk). Signs on the block said it was being closed for renovation from 17/10.
Reception was friendly, mini-mart had ready meals in the freezers plus all the basics including wine and beers.
Travel into Edinburgh is straightforward - reception will sell you an all-day pass for £4. 50 which you scrape off the day/month/year and show to the driver. Bus stops are just outside the site and buses are frequent.
We'll definitely return as it's perfect for Edinburgh.
This site allows travellers and the site was full of travellers on our stay. Surrounded by 12 traveller vans, caravans. I would not have booked this site if aware of this. We would prefer a quieter site.
Toilets could be better and cleaner, showers cold and no heating on for an all year site.
The staff are lovely and did move us once away from the main traveller group.
Instructions for bus to Edinburgh could have been clearer.
Location is great but the site is not safe enough for us to leave a van and go into Edinburgh for the day which is disappointing.
We were a party of 2, one disabled adult, with one teenage child. We had no tent but were using the pitch for just our car.
Most aspects of cleanliness, noise, setting and facilities were very good, but understanding of disabled needs was very shaky. Limited understanding of how tricky access to shower/WC blocks can be for disabled people.
I explained my needs when I booked but was allocated a pitch with an uphill path, 2 flights of steps, or blocks not yet in service. When I asked for a change at reception the second person I spoke to was very helpful and gave me a pitch on the flat and near the disabled toilet. Then the disabled toilet was locked at night.
Otherwise, our stay was pleasant and peaceful. A few tweaks to the booking process in the case of disabled customers, and leaving the disabled toilet open 24/7 would have made it perfect. via mobile
