Just back from a 3 night stay. Very busy due the edinburgh festival but still a quiet site. The playpark was ideal for the kids and a small amusement arcade kept them amused.
There is a TV room which was a nice wee extra. Two shower blocks very clean and well maintained one of the blocks has underfloor heating and massive cubicles.
Lovely walks in the Mortonhall estate and its only 10 mins from the city centre.
Small shop on site with basics but tesco is a 5 min drive away. The only thing I would fault is there is no evening entertainment which the kids look forward to.
What a lovely site set in the grounds of the hall, great walks round the grounds a garden centre with cafe good cup of tea, and a pub on site
The Stables that did good food along with other halfs favourite beer and had a cobbled courtyard to sit out in when the sun came out.
The toilet block was immaculate would have liked a couple of privacy cubicles but water was hot and showers good.
There was a shop on site that sold gifts and every thing else you would need and of course the lovely morning rolls (do miss them now home) along with papers.
There was a bus stop a couple of minutes from entrance straight into Princess Street which was as usual very busy will definitely be back.
Visited twice already, pitches are generous in size and facilities are brilliant. In windy days, the kitchen is really useful and convenient.
In June, we pitched at higher area (pitch #400+), which is the best location in the park from my opinion. It is a pity that the higher part pitches are only opened in summer, so we could not pitch there this time in Sep.
The toilet blocks in the upper part are excellent, all private bathrooms.
There are Toby Carvery nearby.
This site is a good base to visit Lothian area, as the Edinburgh city bypass is nearby, you do not have to get in and our the city all the time.
Stayed 2 nights and friends stayed in a wigwam. The pitch we found a bit on the small side, our van is tiny and had planned on putting the awning up, just as well it poured the entire weekend and it never made it up as we would have struggled with the space.
Having said that the facilities on site were great. The tv room and pool table kept us entertained and out of the rain and the pub on site ensured we were fed and watered.
The toilets and showers were spacious and clean, but we were there when the site was quiet.
There is a large garden surrounding the Hall that can be accessed from the road at the back of the court yard. Overall a good site and the wigwams are spacious too, although they are bit more expensive than other places.
We booked a 3-bedroom holiday home for a three-generation family visit, first grandson just 9 weeks old, his first camping trip! The caravan was lovely.
Very spacious lounge / dining / kitchen with cooker, microwave, fridge and kettle. No toaster. The bedrooms were, as usual, skimpy, the two twin rooms were extra skimpy for adult use. But only the double room had space for the Moses basket, and then at the foot of the bed. So we managed okay.
To our surprise there was a cloakroom (toilet and basin) as well as a shower room (toilet basin and shower). The shower cubicle was unusually large for a caravan one, oblong, and the water supply to it was great. Hence we never needed to use the shower blocks.
The on-site Stable bar was used, with friends who were also staying, and they put us all together. Fair value for money, excellent food, good variety, vegetarians not forgotten. So good we ate there two of our three nights.
Staff very friendly, welcoming and helpful.
The site didn't seem unduly busy, though must have been about half full.
Very conveniently placed for access to Edinburgh or other touristy places. We had an excellent visit to the Scottish Mining Museum, to South Queensferry with a boat trip on the Forth, as well as a tourist bus round the city.
Spent 2 nights with my wife in one of the wigwams and have to say they were brilliant. 4 beds (3 together), heater, kettle, fridge and microwave.
We were 20 mins away and realised we had left our sleeping bags at home but when my wife told the receptionist this, the lady couldn't have been any nicer and she just popped some in the wigwam for us without charge.
The toilet facilities were immaculate and seemed to be getting cleaned every time I went in. Showers were great as well.
Bus into the city was just outside the campsite and a lot easier than taking the car in. I cant comment on the stable bar as we never went in due to us being out sightseeing.
This was our second visit to Mortonhall - we stayed there in the tent last October and although generally it would not usually be 'our sort of site' being quite large and commercial, we were so impressed with the beautiful grounds and superb facilities that we decided to return. This time we booked one of their wigwams for the 2 night stay.
As already mentioned the facilities are excellent - the wash-block nearest our wigwam was by far the most luxurious we've ever seen on a campsite, with underfloor heating! The wigwams themselves are far larger than they look from the outside, and we were surprised to find a kettle, fridge and microwave inside too. There is heating and lighting, and in spite of the distinctly wintry conditions (it snowed on our last morning!) we didn't need the heating on overnight at all as the unit was so well insulated.
Transport links to and from the city centre are perfectly good - the No. 11 bus runs right past the site, and until just before midnight, although we found that the on-site Good Beer Guide listed pub - The Stable Bar - served very well for evening meals and beers!
We'll certainly be going back - and would definitely stay in the wigwams again too.
This is a great site, we have been to this site many times over the years, not a lot has changed the staff are all first class as before, we had a meal and a few pints at the lovely pub/restaurant this was excellent and again staff were first class. We stayed on a fully serviced pitch which was good although on a steep hill.
The toilet blocks were clean and tidy with plenty of hot water and good showers.
The only down side with the site is when awnings are erected there's not a lot of room between caravans which shouldnt be the case because the site is huge.
There is an excellant bus service into Edinburgh we chose to use our car this time and spent most of our day in the Museum of Scotland this is a worth while visit and I will be back.
The site is very well located for Edinburgh. Easy to find, and has an excellent bus service from outside the gates in to Edinburgh and Leith.
The Stable restaurant (on site) provides simple pub food, at reasonable prices. The main shower block is heated and very clean.
There are lovely walks directly from the site, and the younger children in our group enjoyed the play area. However, I think it was a little to commercial for us and had a lack of management and focus in some area’s, which is a great shame.
We booked 3 pitches together for 8 nights, but when we arrived there were problems with 2 of the pitches: one of the pitches didn't have enough space for an awning at all, one of the other pitches was next to European van so their door and awning were on the same side as our awning so again there wasn't enough room to pitch up. We went straight to reception and the friendly staff moved us all to different hardstanding pitches.
We arrived the weekend before Easter so the site was lovely and quiet, very spacious with lovely views. At this point only the main toilet block was open, but it remained very clean, very warm (even with the snow) and were empty most of the time. I did complain that the mop bucket water (used to clean out the showers) should have been changed more regularly.
As Easter Friday approached, there was a noticeable change to the feel of the site as it became busier. Once all the hardstanding pitches were taken, only the grass pitches were available. We found there was a lack of guidance on how these grass pitches should be used and the caravans, tents and camper vans that used them were crammed in, facing all directions which made it all seem and look chaotic.
There is no barrier on the entrance to the site so caravans etc could arrive and pitch up at any time – even though they do have a large late night arrivals area by the entrance. One evening a caravan arrived at 10pm and started to negotiate a very tight grass pitch in the dark. Due to all the other vans and tents around them they couldn’t get into position, so they left their engine running, with full beam on for almost 30 mins whilst they discussed what to do! As you can imagine the tent directly in front of their headlights had something to say about this. To make matters worse, once they pitched their van, their vehicle was stuck due to all the other vans and tents around them and their car had to to stay put until someone moved off a few days later!
Once the other toilet and shower blocks gradually opened for the season, we realised there was a big difference between them. There is no comparison to the main shower block, I think most people that had used the site before realised this, so the main shower block become very busy in the mornings with 4 or more ladies queuing to use the showers. I believe the gents was the same.
The speed limit on site was abused quite a lot. We were pitched opposite the mini roundabout directly beside the road up to the static vans and were surprised how thoughtless some drivers were especially as there were children playing.
If you are not keen on children with skooters this is not the site for you. The gentle slope of the site makes it great fun for the kids to race around all day and evening. (Note to self, be careful where you pitch up in future).
For all I have mentioned above, I would use/recommend this site again, but not over a busy holiday period.
Well booked in for one night on Sunday, stayed in one of the wigwams, all I can say is. FANTASTIC. What a great site and the young lady was so helpful and friendly. Got bus into Edinburgh to meet friends. Buses very regular from right outside site. Very late return to a very cosy warm wigwam, yes there is an electric heater, fridge and kettle, the heating had been put on before we arrived so was lovely and warm, another little extra thought from owners. Kitchen you can use just around corner we however didn't use, the toilet block was immaculate. A lovely site with easy bus route into city so no expensive parking. We will definitely be returning.
We have stayed at this site on several occasions and never been disappointed. It is a beautiful site close to many amenities, on the bus route for Edinburgh City centre and close to the garden centre with a lovely cafe within. The staff are very friendly and helpful, the site is very clean and well maintained. There is a little play are for the children and plenty of space to play also. The shower blocks are clean and warm. There is a lovely pub on site serving hot and cold meals and very reasonable prices. I can't praise this place enough!
We were very happy with the campsite. It was clean and vey good located as the bus to Edinburgh goes every 10 minutes.
Little downside was that we were allocated a pitch which was very slopey, ok if you want to stay one or two nights, but for a entire week its bad to cook lopsided.
The shower/ toilet blocks were in very good condition at all times. The hairdryer broke and it was replaced within hours. Very nice. Unusual to have unisex showers but no problem as the cubicles were little bathrooms.
The shop on site and the other facilities were also very good. Believe what you read on their website, its all true.
We loved every minute of our holiday and would like to say thanks to Mortonhall for looking after us.
We stayed here for 2 nights in August to vist the Comedy/Fringe festival in Edinburgh. Cost was £24 per night without electric.
Well maintained and well run site. Only complaint was pitch sizes far too small. The hardstanding pitches lookes OK, but we were on a field as these were the only spaces left and we felt crammed in.
Bus to Edinburgh is £1. 30 every 10 mins. Taxi back was £14.
Pub on site was good. I was expecting a Haven/ Billy bear type setup but this was not the case. Considering the size of the site it was very quiet
Overall a good site and pitch size should not be a problem if you book a hard standing.
It is the best campsite we have stayed up till now! It is big and spacious, with good facilities. The place was very busy that time we visited.
We have stayed there for 3 nights. Only downside was, that after getting the pitch number and the map, we discovered that our pitch is already taken by someone else. And because the night before was heavy rain, it was quite wet, with puddles.
Eventually we got the pitch which wasn't bad. But we kept thinking that original allocated spot was better.
Toilet block was so spacious, warm, clean and nice music was playing all the time! You have 3 shower block choices and they were great too. Hot water as much as you want!
There is kitchen, where you can use microwave, cooking stoves, kettle, toaster for tokens (1 pound for 15 min), big table in the midle. Very good for families with children.
There were wooden tables outside as well if you wanted to dine not in your tent. There even was a TV room! After camping for 2 weeks, it was so nice to be able to sit down for an hour and watch something
Buses are running every 10 min form the campsite to the town centre and its worth travelling that way as we spent ages and then a fortune on parking a car in the town.
Next day we went by bus, they even allow dogs in, which was great as we were travelling with a dog :) The last bus from town goes 11. 40pm, so you can spent as much time as you want in the town.
We will definitely be visiting this place again, as we love Edinburgh.
This is a huge site. There is a good shop and also quite a good camping accessory shop. We were on a fully serviced pitch which was nice but we didn't like the fact that there was a double layer of pitches (zig zagged) so we were overlooked on all sides. Considering that we paid 31 pounds a night we didn't expect that.
We have been on almost 40 sites since we commenced our round UK tour in April and this is the most expensive site we have been on. Also the pitch was very sloping. We needed extra blocks as well as levelling blocks.
We could not get satellite TV because of the trees behind us. We did see other units with their dishes up so it was just unfortunate that we couldn't get reception. We could get normal TV and phone and internet reception was OK. H
aving said that the site is quite nice. The toilet/shower block is unisex which is a bit unusual. However, each cubicle is like a mini bathroom with shower, toilet and wasbasin. It was a bit grubby but lots of hot water.
There is a pub and restaurant on site. This is really nice with good food at reasonable prices. There is a bus that runs every 10 minutes into Edinburgh which is quite handy.
The stop is just across the road from the site. We did the walk from the site up to Blackford Hill. It was a bit of a climb up but was worth it.
The view from the top was spectacular overlooking Edinburgh. If you don't want to walk you can drive up to the Royal Obseratory and just a short walk from there up to the top.
If you do walk from the site be wary of the walk instructions given by the park. A 2 hour round walk turned into a 3 1/2 hour walk and we came across another couple that had made the same mistake as us. A short way into the walk the path splits.
The path to the left is signposted Briars Hill. The path to the right is not signposted so we took the signposted one.
We should have gone to the right and a bit further down the track is a signpost to Blackford Hill.
All in all this is a well positioned site for visiting Edingburgh and would return here again.
