This is the second time we have camped at Mortonhall. Really easy to find, on the main bus route into Edinburgh city centre.
On-site: Shop, games & television room, disabled toilet at Reception. Garden Centre & Arboretum. Family restaurant & bar. Laundry, food preparation and dish-washing facilities. Drinking water available close to wherever you are pitched. Electrical hook-up and cable available for hire if needed.
The ablutions are great, the only camping park I know of that provides hair dryers! Loads of toilets and showers. Never had to queue for a shower, however, we have only stayed out of season.
Static caravans and Wigams for hire.
Open all year round (new).
Staff are great and helpful. We can highly recommend this site, whether you pitch a tent or prefer the wigwams, you will not be disappointed.
In 5 weeks touring around the UK Mortonhall was one of our favourite sites. The staff were brilliant, and the park is very well laid out.
Easy to find with excellent signage, and close to a bus stop which made for easy travel in and out of Edinburgh - no need to take the car and find parking !
The shower block was fantastic, hot showers (most important to me) and plenty of space with hairdryers provided.(A mirror where the dryer is located would be good).
A great kitchen area with microwaves, kettles, toasters, and a large well appointed laundry room. There is a restaurant next to the site which is convenient (we didn't use it so can't comment)
Very good value for money. We stayed several nights and came back again for another later in the trip. Highly recommended.
This is another site I've visited a couple of times and another of my favourites. This site is in a really good location for Edinburgh especially during the Fringe Festival.
The site is located about 20 minutes south of the Town but there is a bus stop outside that takes you into to the centre and saves you having to fight for a parking spot or pay extortionate parking fees.
This site is really large but well kept and well equipped. There is a well stocked shop, pub and take away on the site as well as a butty van selling breakfasts and hot drinks in the mornings.
There are lots of toilet facilities but in peak periods there are often queues. Personally, I've never waited more than 10 minutes for a shower.
Each time we've visited we've been allocated a decent plot and never had any problems booking beforehand or getting a hook-up. All in all, large busy site but well kept and in a great location for visiting Edinburgh.
There is a good shop on site and the staff are really friendly. The site is well signposted and easy to find.
The cooking facilities are good. Toilets were pretty clean and it was a very tidy site.
There is a pub nearby, which does really good meals and has a great log fire.
If there was one change I would recommend it would be to try and create a bit more wind breaks on the site, especially the area used for tents. It is a great site, but a bit exposed.
I have a really good tent that stands up well to strong winds, but other tents, especially big ones that catch the wind a lot more, might have problems if there are really strong winds. I would come back again, and I plan on going back. Even if you don't have a car, the nearby bus stop makes it easy to get into the city.
The only down side I found was that you have to lift your ground sheet each day, or move your tent.
I had a lovely Christmas break here. Despite the severe snow and frost the staff were welcoming.
Initially there was no running water in the caravan due to the very cold temperatures having frozen the pipes, but the caravan was toasty warm with everything I needed. The staff gave us water in containers as they fought to get the pipes de-frosted, and I was able to use the lovely underfloor heated shower block prior to having the running water.
I loved it, as it was an adventure.
Very easy access into Edinburgh, and also to they bypass when going further afield.
The staff kept the roads/paths for use clear in and were very lovely.
Easy to find, friendly welcome, well staffed reception - which was needed as busy site. You can catch a bus in to Edinburgh from the stop opposite the site, quite a long trip as lots of stops on the way, but convenient and reasonably priced.
Toilets fine, although on our first morning there was a problem with hot water so cold showers! I expected the site to be noisier than it was as so busy, but very quiet at night and probably during the day, although we were out all day, as probably were most people. I would just say that the shop was quite expensive though, so we bought any groceries we needed when we were out.
We didn't use restaurant facilities, and I'm not sure if there was a play area. We visited Edinburgh Zoo - really good day out. It's much bigger than it looks, and we heard some interesting talks. The chimpanzee section is brilliant. I'm generally not a big fan of zoos, but this was a good one and I didn't come away feeling concerned about animal welfare!
Visited this site purely to go into Edinburgh, the bus stops just outside the site entrance which was great. We opted for a grass pitch with electric as I cant stand gravel pitches maybe its me but its like pitching on a car park.
The site has everything you need and its all clean and in good order.
Stayed 6 nights here end of Aug and was in the main quite impressed with the site, found the price excellent. It is within very picturesque surroundings with a regular bus service to Edinburgh just outside the main driveway.
Some toilet blocks seemed more modern and in better state then others but they were all perfectly clean and usable.
Only minor complaint was they seemed to put tents next door to each other although they were not on top of one another. Staff were friendly and helpful. All in all a site I would visit again
On arrival we could not be found on the bookings list, but were allocated 2 pitches by the children's play park any way, (our friends had not arrived by this point), these were confusing and hard to find, on a camp site of this size.
The pitches were on a steep slope and were very small (we have a trailer tent, and could only erect the trailer part, which on this occasion was ok, as we were only staying 4 nights before moving further north).
When our friends arrived, they were allocated another 2 pitches on hard standing, so we headed off to sort out the problem in reception, and we were not the only people there who were confused and a bit miffed. Enough said !
The facilities are great, and the takeaway van (7.30-11am) is a bonus. The stables bar/restaurant is reasonably priced and the food excellent, as is the service.
Great access into Edinburgh on the bus, and for £3 day saver, a bargain.
If you are going to the Tattoo and to do some sight seeing, then this is the site for you, but at £26 per night standard pitch, it is very pricey, for a cramped few days.
We visited this site for a long weekend over the august bank holiday, we were a group of 9 girls and 6 parents with 3 pitches. Check in was ok but took a little time, after finding our pitch which was on a bit of a slope we found that there was lots on site,
A shop that sold a good range of food and drinks, camping and caravanning equipment just in case you forgot anything or like us and couldn't fit it in the car
Plenty of toilet/showers, washing up facilities, games room with tv, table tennis, a pool table and also a computer that cost £1.00 per hour a very good idea for teenagers there is also a play area for younger children.
There is a local number 11 bus that stops right outside the campsite going in to Edinburgh £1.20 for adults and 70p for children which ever stop you get off at but you do need to have the right fare as they don't give change but is well worth it as it is a bit expensive to park in the city centre.
Decided to visit this site due to reviews praising it so highly. Had a two night stay and left with mixed feelings. Upon arrival, was directed by helpful and friendly staff to a pitch adjacent to the site entrance, with a lovely scenic view of a massive electricity pylon.
Whilst reading the issued site rules & regs and personally observing the no noise rule after 11pm, couldn't help but notice the amount of noise / shouting etc till the early hours.
There is a bar/restaurant on site, but it is tiny, if you're not there when it opens you may not get a seat or table and may have to stand at the very crowded bar all night. I personally did not find the bar prices reasonable, however I accept I chose to visit there.
On the plus side, the toilet/shower blocks were clean, the showers especially nice. Be aware though the much advertised snack van which is supposed to visit this site daily from 7.30-12.00 was hit & miss Dont rely on this for your breakfast, as it didn't always turn up.
We went to this site for the festival. Expected it to be packed and it was. However, I didn't feel for a second like the pitch we had was crowded. Odd arrangement with the pitches- hard to understand map and fact there is little in the way of roads to follow once on the main park. Sloping pitch but not a problem.
As others have said the unisex toilet/showers did get very wet but to be expected in a shower room. There were however a pick of shower blocks and if the wet floors are a problem to you you can easily use others.
The tent area without electricity was just behind us and we had a few nights where we could hear parties and acoustic guitars past midnight.
Overall a good site but I think next time we go we will look for a smaller and closer to city park perhaps. The 11 bus route runs every 20 mins (if they turn up) N37 runs til 4.30am so good for seeing the city. Good park but overall I would give 5/10
This was the first time I had camped so was really pleased with what we found. After realising that people were not deaf and were not ignoring me when I spoke, they simply did not speak English. I quickly discovered the diversity of camping and that camping is actually an interest of people outside of England. Doh!
The site staff were helpful and friendly. The site was well planned and catered for every type of camping style. Everything looked clean; the rubbish was collected regularly, the loos were clean and well stocked and the showers had copious amounts of hot water and was well maintained.
Cleanliness of showers is really important to me. I did not feel the need to use thongs (flip flops) or to use surgical antiseptic on my feet after using the shower. There were quite a few washing areas which suited the bill. These were clean and suited me with my little bowl of washing up. Equally it suited other people who were washing up for about 10 people.
After torrential rain and gale force winds (and very little sleep as I was sure the wind would carry us away to the next suburb and I would wake up seeing tartan stars) we survived and despite the rain the pitch was not soaked at all.
There was ample room to park the car and space for our table chairs and so on. The on-site shop had the basics plus a bit more. The back of the shop had camping essentials and lots of holiday tat such as dominoes, plastic balls, action men etc. Love holiday tat as everyone can always find something handy to buy. That was good as I was able to pick up some games for the evening which I did not think to pack. They had loads of tourist bumf which was handy for planning what to do in Edinburgh but also what was available as we drove around Scotland.
Given the size of the site I was surprised how quiet it was – minus the wind and lashing rain. I discovered the wonderful free camp site map for the whole of Scotland. It lists just about every campsite in Scotland which is really helpful if you are camping on the hoof. This was available in amongst the tourist bumf within the shop/reception area.
There was no need to use the car to get into Edinburgh as the bus stop was outside the site. It was great that the bus had the campsite name in the front window. Coming back, I got on the bus confident in the knowledge I was heading for the campsite and not whoop whoop (middle of no where). It was also handy that there was a clippy (bus ticket person) who was selling bus tickets outside the campsite. Be aware – have the correct change for the bus if you are buying a ticket on board or be prepared to walk.
For a quick and easy dinner, we picked up a chinese from a shop which was only a few minutes from the site.
All in all, I would definitely come back to this site if I was visiting Edinburgh again. I felt comfortable with my 12 yr old son walking to the showers alone in the dark and felt safe at night with it being just myself and my son.
We have used this site several times over the last 5 years and have always had a good experience.
The site is very well positioned for bus access to the city centre, and the Stables bar is handy for evening meals, or for an end-of-evening drink if you've eaten in town.
In main season we've always been close to a toilet block; only when we visited in October did we have to use the more distant block, but whichever we've used has been very clean and tidy.
However, our most recent visit was noticeable for the noise made by other campers late into the night. Both evenings we were there, there were three or four groups who didn't seem to know the basic camping etiquette that after 10.30 or 11pm it is a given that there is no noise unless it's absolutely unavoidable.
We had a family group with two tents near us - on the first night, the kids were playing music beyond midnight; on the second night, the problem was with the parents calling to the kids from one tent to another. These weren't the only noisy groups, there were others by the 'teepees' and another further up the field too. No doubt, each thought the other noisy groups meant it 'must be OK'.
There is a security guard who patrols the site, it just seems a shame that he doesn't try to have a quiet word with groups who are spoiling it for others.
At £26 a night, without electrical hook up, this is the most expensive campsite we have stayed in.
The most off-putting aspect was the detailed list of stringent rules, and the threat that a security guard might escort you from the premises if you did not 'adhere' to them. Yes - we should be reminded to respect quietness after late hours, clean up after ourselves and not annoy other campers too much, but the wording of the rule sheet made me feel afraid to even speak out loud during daylight hours.
We returned quite late from a long day out in Edinburgh to find a mysterious red card attached to our awning, which we later discovered had the message that we must report to reception before 7pm. The writing was washed away by the rain, so we couldn't read it in the dark, but the 'red card' was enough to worry us. What had we done wrong?
We still don't know, but would you accept an order to report to reception without any explanation as to why?
The good point was that it was a bus ride away from the city centre, and all the information we needed was on the Map/Rule Sheet.
