This is our second stay here and as others have said it is a nice site this time again we found the ladies showers un kept we had to take our own paper to the loo as they were not stocked it also looked grubby.
Over all this is a good site and enjoyed the walk through the woods.
Even though I had a moan about the showers I can only say it is a good site but maybe not a 5*
A lovely site only 30 minutes from Edinburgh city centre, number 11 bus just outside the gates, you can buy a ticket at the reception, or on the bus. (£1. 60 each way)
Facilities were immaculate, super showers, and a great dishwashing area too.
A nice play park for the kids, a well stocked shop and a small bar and restaurant.
We don’t usually do big sites but this one was brilliant, we’ll definitely be back.
Was able to secure a tent pitch at the last minute at this site. They were very accommodating and even left the directions at the reception door after hours since we got in late. The non-electric tent pitches are in the middle of a field and it proved to be very challenging camping during that night due to bad weather. The best part though was the shower/toilet block. Very clean and warm with music pumped in, very nice for a lady with kids. The baby changing loo was less nice but still clean and useful. The kids loved the highland cow on the way out and the gent that checked us out was very friendly and accommodating. Easy car ride into the city made this site very worth the £16.
We chose this campsite as a base for the last couple of days of the Edinburgh Festival. This is the perfect location for this, the friendly reception gave us the directions but you simply hop to the bus right outside the campsite and it takes you right into the centre.
The facilities all looked clean and plentiful. We had everything we needed (including the kitchen sink) in our Bumble Camper but enjoyed the hot showers on site.
Stayed here for 2nd time this time for 1 night on 9th August 15. Big site, very helpful staff and 1st class facilities. Great on site pub, kitchen and TV room. Nice level good sized pitches with or without power. Car parking at pitch added bonus. Great shop and good bus link into Edinburgh. 2minutes Off city bypass makes it a great place to see the shows around Festival time. Plenty of toilet and shower block all around the site always with hot water and kept very clean. Will def use again.
We had 2 nights in July the park wasn't busy, so didn't have to wait for showers/ toilets. On arrival they couldn't find our booking, then said oh you're already booked in??? We found our site which wasn't that easy, however plenty of room, pricing was comparable to other parks we stayed at in England. The park itself is beautiful, only wish we had more time there to walk around the park more ( we spent our valuable short time in Edinburgh) bus is very close and easy to use. In Australia we have camp kitchens for anyone to use with bbq's, seats and wash up facilities, bbq area don't seem exist in Scotland / England, they can be a good meeting place with other travellers, here there is a wash up area only. There is a pub close by, you would need to book for a meal, but a very nice little meeting place.
We stayed at this site recently and have to say how impressed we were with not only the facilities and location but with how helpful the staff were too. The site is very reminiscent of ones we've stayed at both in Europe and in Australia too. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this site if you're visiting Edinburgh, or just stopping over as we were, whilst heading north to the Highlands. Remember you get what you pay for in life but here you get more! Loved it and will be back.
One of only a few campsites available in Edinburgh, this is definitely what you would call a 'glamping' site.
Everything is super organised, but the campsite will take every opportunity to charge for things, such as use of the kitchen area.
The recycling facilities were excellent and the campsite has a highland cow on the way in which was cool.
Although not a fault of the campsite, the ground is very rocky - most of our pegs bent and we had to buy some more from the campsite (which were reasonably priced).
The shower facilities look nice, but the showers are not very good in my opinion. The temperature is sporadic, changing from blazing hot to icy cold instantly, but mostly staying to hot to step into. I can't remember the specific details as it was about a month ago, but I was not at all happy with my showers whilst there, and I'm not particularly fussy.
Quite expensive too at around £12 per person per night, but still cheaper than any hostel or hotel you will find in Edinburgh.
Easy to get to from Edinburgh town centre by bus, but make sure you have the exact change for the bus.
Overall a lovely place to stay. The site is well kept and the on site shop is well stocked. It had fresh bread everyday. If you a larger shop there is a Tesco Express a short car drive away. There were 3 toilet/shower blocks on site. The toilet block nearest to where we stayed was well kept, but with few showers for the size of site.
I would say that the only real draw back about this site was that the pitches were extremely small. We have a large tent, which the campsite knew when we booked. The pitch was that small that the couple next to us were completely hidden by our tent, which we apologized for, but there was no other way to pitch. There was a games room, laundry and a kitchen on site, but as we did not use I cannot comment, they did look clean though. There was a lovely bar/pub on site. It was in an old court yard type thing. Full of character and absolutely beautiful food. I would strongly advise that you BOOK in advanced as there were really busy every evening that we went up there for a drink.
The location of the site is great, close enough to Edinburgh to have a really good explore but far enough away to be peaceful. The bus link that they advertise is really great. It is a cheap way of exploring Edinburgh. The castle is lovely and as are the gardens. There is an old part of Edinburgh and a newer part, both equally lovely.
In the reception/shop they do have the facility to re-freeze your ice blocks, but it is not 100% guaranteed that you will get your own ice blocks back again, as it seemed like a very hap-hazard way of identifying whose blocks are whose.
The site was very large and with no gates etc they do supply 2 security guards at night, more for peace of mind I think.
All the members of staff that worked there were all very helpful.
This site was great but larger pitches woulod have saved on a little embarrassment, and made it a little more comfortable for campers.
Stayed at Mortonhall for 3 days whilst visiting Fringe. Very easy to find from the south by road. Good site, loaned electric hook up for £30 deposit. Good facilities, helpful staff, clean facilities, although showers just warm. Regular bus to and from Edinburgh but make sure you ask for Day & Night ticket as although Day ticket same price - £3. 50, this is invalid after twelve midnight and you will need to buy return ticket at £3. (We got caught out) Great value full breakfast till 11. 30 am at Klondyke Garden Centre on way into site for £1. 99. Dear but Ibis Hotel in Edinburgh £229 per night. Say no more Hope to return next year
We have just stayed here for 4 nights at the very start of the Fringe. Yes, the site is very expensive but very convenient for buses into the City which run very frequently from the site road end.
Caravanners and motorhomers beware. If you pay extra for a premium pitch (hardstanding) most of these are very sloping and it can be difficult to 'chock up' and get a level. My advise just stick to the grass pitches?
Site was very busy and shower facilities were stretched, morning and evenings there was a queue. Cleaning could have been more regular as it was peak season.
Handy chuck wagon on the site doing breakfast items for campers from 7. 30am to 11. 30am. Also on site restaurant and bar. Smallish shop not terribly well stocked, mainly essential items.
Morrisons supermarket was within 2 miles and also a Toby carvery within a similar distance the other way.
Lots of children as it was school holidays. Perhaps as it is a large 250 pitch site, an adult only section would be a good idea?
Having just returned from a trip to the Fringe Festival I must agree that this is a great site for visiting the city. Running at max capacity it still felt peaceful and pitches not too crowded. As with the previous reviewer the site does let itself down with it's penny pinching policies. Despite occupying less space than a caravan and car I was charged more for having a motorhome and a car, a quick thinking staff member when I queried this put this additional taxing down to 'extra insurance involved'???? More embarrassing was the reaction of foreign campers when they had to feed a pound in to a slot meter for 15mins of electricity to boil their kettle or heat their meal. Obviously all the local plumbers must be at the Festival as two of the showers are still out of action must to the annoyance of the female campers!
Maybe I've been spoilt after having just returned from touring Eastern Europe at 15euro a night some of which included free wifi and buffet breakfast!, but the Fringe was worth the extra costs.
In spite of the alarming number of high spec German motor-mansions parked all around our humble, rental vehicle, all manner of camper seemed to fit in nicely at this superbly situated site. It really does have it all, proximity to Edinburgh (a short, regular bus ride away; the helpful staff advised us to get a mega-cheap all day family ticket which also permitted us to use trams- very exciting for the children!) and a surprisingly rural location. The latter is really worth exploring, again, staff gave me some maps of the surrounding countryside where one can walk or cycle for miles with some wonderful views. The site is expensive but the facilities are good and clean. The shower block closest to our pitch had half the showers out of use, which was a little disappointing but others were available a short walk away. My children tell me the playpark was 'awesome' and the site felt safe enough for us to allow them to go and explore and play away from the pitch. We would definitely visit again. The only negative point; given that it was pricey, charging £5 extra for wifi access seemed a bit of a cheek!
Any site who has its basics right and does nothing obviously wrong is worth its eight stars, so at five this one must have done something wrong. Well, where do we start.
The site is centrally located near Edinburgh, well-connected by bus, and as such it seems to attract its visitors. Where another site would say 'we're full', Mortonhall decided to open up a 'festival lawn' - others would call it an overflow area - and point us there. Let's just say it is a football field sized lawn divided in marked pitches so small we couldn't even fit our tent in it, with Portaloo cabins as its own facilities, and conclude by mentioning our allocated pitch was some four metres from the Portaloo door. Yes, women really do go to the toilet in groups to hold a chat, even after midnight! It may finally be unfair to judge a site by its pricing, but again we cannot let it go unmentioned that it cost a whopping 166% of the next most expensive site we encountered during our three weeks holiday.
The actual facilities of the campsite we cannot even judge as it is so huge you need a map and compass to navigate it and we chose to just sleep there and head off right afterwards.
OK, so Edinburgh in high season may attract its visitors, and perhaps our expectations were off, but we have also been to Glasgow amidst the Commonwealth Games, and the campsite owner there had both come to better grips with the increased demand and charged significantly less for the pleasure of staying at his site. Score Glasgow 1, Edinburgh 0.
First visit to this site but we like its sister site at Bamburgh so gave it a try.
Excellent. Bank holiday weekend so busy but enough facility blocks to cope. Pitches at angles so although quite close we didn't directly overlook anyone. Rural setting despite being within the city bypass and with residential areas to the east and west. Bus into the city every 20 mins, or 30 mins on Sunday. £3. 50 for day ticket. Buy on the bus, correct money only but takes notes.
Would suspect facilities could be a bit stretched when the festival field is opened to campers.
Shop looks sizeable but could carry more stock
