We arrived and were greeted and efficiently booked in the lady also took the trouble of pointing out the facilities whilst also trying to serve what looked to be a good breakfast.
We found our pitch and being the bank holiday weekend the site was filling up quite rapidly.
Then the fun started trying to get the tent up and bang the pegs in was a near on an impossibility, we asked our neighbour if he had a sledgehammer as his tent was already up but they had had the same problem. I really do not know how you can address this problem but there are too many comments on this site for the owners not to address these problems and perhaps provide special pegs or make people aware of this so they can come armed with the right tools for the job.
Another mistake we made was to pitch up by the fence nearest the pebbled road, the site do not seem to have any time when vehicles were allowed back into the site or how early they left in the morning (the earliest was 5am and latest about 2am). You also get people crunching on the way to the shower blocks and reception and yes how little boys like to skid around on their bikes.
My strong advice would be to go even if you are squashed in would be the other side of the field.
The showers were ok but you had to put the 20p in before you got undressed so that wasted a little time also I really did not want to put my things anywhere, the chrome tidies really need to be replaced as they were all rusted. The actual cleanliness was ok. I choose to shower in the evening because of the queues.
The washing up area had no hot water and only one person could use the water out of the taps at one time so this also builds up queues.
The cafe looked great and lots of people were eating- I have a husband who cooks my breakfast so cannot comment on the quality.
Location was great though a great Chinese restaurant opposite we got just a late snack of noodles but it was obviously good as it was packed and The Old House at Home public house all worth visiting.
I would certainly pay another £5 at night if the facilities were updated as the location and general site was ok
We chose this site for its value for money and proximity to the coast. A large tent and 4 adults (children are only children to age 10!) cost us £13 pounds a night. The site’s web page show good accurate pictures of the site and gives a fair description. When ringing up to book I didn't have to leave a deposit and was told that there was no booking in time limit or pressure to leave by a certain time on our final day.
On closer inspection of the map however I realised that the site was right next to a railway line!
When we arrived we were given a friendly welcome and allowed to choose our own pitch. We chose the field furthest away from the railway line and the trains didn't disturb our sleep. We were however in a field that had groups camping and they were a bit loud the first night.
As the sites name suggests it obviously is targeted more at caravans than tents - although there were a good number of tents on the site. Its facilities seem to reflect that. The toilet block was in good condition but only had 3 toilets and three showers for each sex. The showers were also 20p for 6 mins which wasn't mentioned on the website.
There were queues for the showers and the toilets in the mornings and evenings.
The washing up facilities were also not adequate as there were only two sinks and there was not enough hot water - again this meant there were queues.
The site also had a laundry room, a very small shop and a cafe. It did sell gas though which for a long stay would be useful.
For a first camping experience we found the site great and the lack of facilities would not put us off returning as the price was so good.
The fantastic West Wittering beach was only a 20 - 25 min drive and from the site you could walk 10 mins to the estuary/ marina - which the website does refer to as the local beach - a bit of a misnomer I thought, but a lovely walk nevertheless.
For those who want a cheap break within striking distance of the coast I recommend this site for a good no frills break.
Had 3 days on this site with ehu, and have to say were not overly impressed.
Easy enough to find and book in (if heading towards Chichester, go through Emsworth then as you get to Nutbourne, turn left at the TDI car dealer).
Facilities were ok, though could have done with more. Three showers and two toilets for the guys and three and three for the girls. The site is quite big and would benefit from an axtra couple of cubicles. There is a disabled toilet in the mens side.
We found it very noisy, with the tent right behind us having a tv on nightly, and I had to ask them to turn it down at 00-30 one morning. Also the kids on site didn't appear to come out until around 9-30pm, not particularly conducive to getting young ones off to sleep. You also have the trains going back and forth, but you get used to them and they didn't really bother us.
Our major bug bear was the ground though. Hard work getting the pegs into the ground and even harder getting them out afterwards. Do take extra pegs and ensure you have a big mallet.
Nicely positioned for hayling island, Chichester, Bognor Regis and the witterings, (West witterings estate was a real find for us, less than 10 miles, £5 all day parking, a shop, cafe and toilets, and to top it off, a great sandy beach with a high lifeguard presence and wristbands free for the kids) and there are pubs, a Chinese and Indian restaurant and a Chinese take-away quite close to the site. You can also nip into Emsworth where there is a small tesco and a nice little town centre.
We personally wont be going back to this site, but it's not too bad for a cheap short break for the west sussex coast.
We stayed here for the second time, as it is not too far from Goodwood for the festival of speed. The park was busy for this weekend due to the festival, but everyone was friendly, no one was overly noisy and the shower blocks were clean and tidy at all times. Despite there only being three showers on a 6 min timer for 20p in both the mens and ladies, neither myself or my boyfriend had to queue at all each morning. The floors were mopped clean daily and there was always soap available. We were in a tent and had our own electric hook up, which is recommended, but if not there are two plug sockets in the shower block.
The only criticism is the pub next door. Not friendly, and very expensive £8.90 for a large glass of wine and a flat pint of fosters. If you are prepared to walk there is a pub a mile away,as you turn left out of the site, which was quiet and expensive, but nicer surroundings. However, we would recommend turning right out the campsite and walking to the next town. Sweet little harbour, a few shops and many pubs each with a lot more atmosphere and more reasonable, we had a balti in the town which was good and not expensive with good service. A taxi back cost £5.00, just before midnight. If you are hungry and don't want to walk then the chinese restaurant across the road is amazing. Tesco Extra is located about 5 mins drive away, and a little co op is within walking distance. We booked for 4 nights, and were quoted £52.00, and on arrival were charged £40.00. Cannot be faulted!
We stayed on this site the goodwood festival weekend. We were meant to stay for 2 nights but only ended up staying the one.
As others have said, the site is made up of 3 fields, one with hookups which was dominated by caravans, and the other 2 were free for all fields.
The ground was very firm and we literally had to soak it with water to get the tent pegs in, looking around there were tents with their pegs still half sticking out of the ground.
All the facilities are at the start of the first field with hookups, so if you're in a tent in one of the other 2 fields you have a minimum of about 100 meters to walk.
The facilities were clean, and there was a small onsite shop too were you can refreeze ice blocks however you are tied to the cafe opening times, which was no good for us being out very early for the festival.
We only stayed one night and were pleased enough with the site itself, to return in the future.
I left it late last week to book a pitch and had some difficulty as it was the speed weekend at Goodwood. The site we originally tried to book was out of the question and fully booked. I hadn't heard of this site before and knew nothing about it. I was a little dubious as to what we would find as we were told that a Motorhome for one night would be ok, would cost twelve pounds and another three for an electrical hookup. We also had a freestanding awning. There were five adults and two small children in our party. It sounded too cheap, and the other site would only accept weekend bookings or whole weeks. We've paid twice the amount asked per night on other sites with comparable facilities.
We were very pleased with the appearance of the site when we arrived, but a little surprised at being given two locations with available pitches, and told we could park more or less wherever we fancied. We took them at their word, expecting problems from people already on site, but had some very nice neighbours.
We found the facilities offered adequate and well cared for. The 20p 6min showers were clean and had plenty of hot water from instant water heaters. We never used the cafe, but that would have been a bonus as we've never seen one on site before. Access was good, vehicles entering late that night were driven considerately and we had an excellent nights sleep, even though we were parked next to the entrance.
Two comments I would make, although not necessarily criticisms. If you take children with you, make sure they have something to play with as we weren't aware of a children's play area, and make sure you take heavy duty tent pegs with you, as there are a lot of flints in the soil. Could be Roman remains though.
We will be going back there again. They have seventy pitches, seem happy for one night bookings and are very helpful. The Chichester area has very much to offer in terms of history and beauty. If you don't like it there.Blame me!
We only stayed one night (20.6.09) but thought it was a lovely site.
I read the other reviews before booking and had a few reservations but it was a smashing site. The trains do run on a Sunday as well though!
We had trouble finding reception so rang the lady who came and found us and drove us over to our pitch. No marked out pitches that we could make out (top, left hand field). Electric hookup was fine and not on a token as it was previously apparently.
The toilet and shower block was always clean and had toilet roll every time we used it (forgot the portaloo.) The shop may be basic but they had the heinz ketchup last night when we needed it!
The kids played on the pool table and enjoyed the space to ride their bikes and even cricket and football too with some older teenagers. No noise problems and even got used to the regular trains quickly.
Would love to go again as not too far from home and only took about 30 minutes.
My family (myself, husband and 3 young boys) stayed in a tent for the weekend with my mum and dad in their campervan. The reception is very hard to find and is not signposted, you need to come in on the 2nd entrance to the site and its much easier to find. No one showed us where to pitch just told to find a spot which was fine as you could choose where to go but there was large groups who pitched up on the Saturday and the noise went on till 3am. The owner did drive round the site at about 1am but nothing was done about keeping noise levels down (all for having fun but after 12pm could be kept to a min.) Showers and toilets were clean with shower being operated by 20p for about 6mins. There is a cafe and laundry room but did not use but looked ok. Was an ok site would stay again if they could control noise levels.
We stayed here with a couple of friends at the end of May. The campsite was clean and well looked after.
It looked like the site was made up of 3 fields. One mainly for statics and caravans and another two for tents and caravans.
The reception is in the cafe (go up the long drive, take 2nd right, you'll see a car park and cafe and other facilities are to your right). The the lady we spoke to was friendly enough and told us which field to use. We were pretty much left to our own devices and didn't really see any staff after this. It wasn't particularly busy and we could choose where we wanted to pitch. We camped in the 2nd field at the bottom near the railway line. The trains were no bother. As per previous reviews, the ground was hard after a few inches down, making it a little hard to peg but no real difficulties otherwise. BBQ's were allowed.
It cost £8 per tent and £1 per person, per night (so £10 per night for 2 adults and a tent).
The campsite was relaxed and enjoyable. It's not the prettiest one I've been to but it was pleasant. It is basically a large field with no shade apart from trees along the rail track. There appeared no time curfew in the evening but there was no noise that we could hear. There is nothing for children to do at this site, so wouldn't have thought it over child friendly, although there were children there.
The toilet/shower blocks had 3 toilets and 3 showers (well the womens did). Showers were 20p for 6 minuets. Basic but fine. Could maybe do with having a few more hooks or shelves to put clothes/stuff on. However they were clean and had a plug facility so you could dry your hair if wanted. There was also a small laundry area, area to wash up and chemical waste area.
My friends ate in the cafe and said it was basic but cheap.
There was no camp shop that I could see.
There was a small Tesco and Co-op a few minutes walk down the road and a large Tesco about 4 miles away heading to Chichester.
There was also a farm shop a few minutes walk.
The local pub was a couple of minutes walk from the site and was not particularly friendly or nice. The drinks were more expensive than they are in London(and Chichester). Maybe they saw us coming!
There looked to be some lovely little pubs heading towards Emsworth (about 2-3 miles away maybe) and it looked a pretty town too, although we never made it that far.
There is a train station about 5 minutes walk from the campsite that takes you to Chichester or Portsmouth. We were going to Goodwood, so this was very handy. Once we got to Chichester there was a bus we could get straight to the races and back for a couple of pounds.
I would return again for sure but next time will definitely check out the pubs towards Emsworth!
We only stayed for one night at this site, on what must have been the wettest, windiest evening of the year! (Fri 5th) But we have just bought our first tent and wanted to try it out, and this site is only 45 minutes from home.
The site itself was easy to find, to locate the reception take the first right, then keep going right and it will be in front of you. Reception was closed when we arrived (5.30 pm), but we saw someone at the bungalow, who directed us to 'pitch wherever we liked'.
Chose to pitch on an empty field. The grass was lovely and green, short and not waterlogged, (very stony though, when putting the pegs in we broke 2 Deltas! and bent half a dozen wire pegs.)
Both the male/female toilets were very clean, lots of loo roll, handwash and paper towels. We didn't use the showers but they were also very clean. The washbasins had mirrors and shelves above. There was also electric sockets available. The washing up room looked clean too, as did the laundry.
We went to reception in the morning to pay our pitch fee of £10. We didn't have the breakfast but it smelt lovely.
Can't really add anymore with regard to the site or surrounding area as we did not stay long enough.
I would stay again, though only in better weather and not the 20mph winds we had to contend with!
