We left a review last year too around the same time, once again a great holiday at ladram bay.
The entertainment team is fantastic at the three rocks but I am not a lover of stopping for bingo I would rather see the kids further entertained. Beer can be cheap if you go for the 4 pint pitcher for £11 which is cheaper than my local.
The on site shop stocks everything at a reasonable price.
The chip shop is good but can be slow service due to everything being cooked to order, (this isn't a bad thing as you are not eating yesterdays sausage)
We stayed on pitch 128 on the ridges which we loved. Fully serviced and no changing water and waste which is great. We have booked to come back next year too.
Crazy golf is very good to keep kids happy, costing 1. 50 each.
The play area for all ages is the best I have seen, having a pirate ship to play on, zip line, swings and a dedicated under 7 play area.
The indoor soft play area is good and has an under 5 section but bigger kids don't seem to be able to read and jump around in there when the smaller kids are playing.
We ate at the pebbles restaurant and again the food was fantastic. We had the carvery one day and steak and lobster the other.
This is our first visit to this site and will definitely not be our last. We arrived, and after a very quick and pleasant check in, we were shown directly to our pitch. We had a lovely sea view, the pitch was hard standing and quite level with plenty of room for our awning.
The weather was a mixture of sun and cloud with the odd shower.
We didn't as a family find the walk back up to our pitch, steep, as previously mentioned in some reviews.
The shower block on The Ridges could do with a bit of updating, but the showers were powerful and hot. There are two hooks on the back of the doors to put your clothes. Due to reading previous reviews, we made sure we took a bag to put our clothes in. Our clothes never got wet.
If you decide to walk to Sidmouth, it is a pleasant coastal walk, though a bit steep in places. Well worth it though. The walk to Budleigh Salterton is a lot less daunting though a little longer.
The site shop is very well stocked and reasonably priced.
We found the entertainment on site extremely good, we could always find somewhere to sit, no matter what time we went out.
We ate out at Pebbles Restaurant a couple of times and the meals were definitely good value for money.
We didn't use the pool, so unable to comment on that. Our two children aged 13yrs and 9yrs and myself swam in the sea instead. The sea was very calm and no strong currents, it was aslo crystal clear, which made swimming very pleasant and the further out we swam the warmer the water got.
I can't praise this site highly enough, if you like a bit of everything, then this is the site for you.
We arrived late at the site on a Thursday evening (20:20) and were told we would have to spend the first night in the car park. Some negotiation time later and we agreed we could pitch.
We had the highest pitch on the highest tier. The 'touring caravan' field is a series of tiers - all over looking the sea.
People have complained the site is hilly. The walk back to the caravan is a slight hill or a steep slope - but it is only a 4 minute walk. Sat outside the caravan with a coffee Saturday morning taking in the beautiful view of the sea makes this 'hill' a small burden.
The site has it's own private beach. The beach is pebble and so a £6 purchase of 'aqua shoes' in the site shop is a sound investment.
The weather Saturday was very sunny, but a little windy - the beach had about 10 families on it. 1/4 mile of spare beach if you walked for a few minutes.
The club house was typical of a very large commercial site. We saw the 'kids entertainment' which was fairly good. £3. 30 a pint for premium lager / cider is acceptable.
If you like or don't mind large commercial sites - Ladram Bay is for you. If you like a quite site - don't book here.
I have only 2 gripes. The toilet and shower blocks are few and far between. On the first morning the shower block nearest us had a note stating the boiler was broken. Which meant a short drive / long walk to the next block.
My other gripe is there is only 1 bin on the whole site - in the main car park.
We didn't get to use the pool (which I am told is great).
We have friends with a 'static' on site and so will visit again.
Difficult site to approach with tourer but well worth the effort. The service was very good, they even put the unit on pitch to save your clutch (uphill levels)
Facilities were excellent and cleaned at least twice a day, the only down side were the showers (lack of space to put clothes) nothing wrong with the actual showers. Restaurant and shop very good and not overpriced.
Entertainment, best I've seen on a campsite. If you enjoy walking there are coastal walks to nearby villages which take you along the cliffs to Sidmouth or Budleigh Salterton both worth the visit.
We very much enjoyed our stay despite near monsoon conditions at times. I highly recommend this site as they cater for everybody.
Difficult to get to the site as the roads are very narrow, but having got there. What a surprise. From booking in the staff were friendly and very helpful, they even take your caravan to the pitch for you and assist in setting it in place. From then on it just got better. From the shop to the restaurant and even more so the entertainment staff were all exceptional. Bearing in mind the weather that year (we had two storm warnings from the site staff) we still had a holiday that will stay in our minds for a long time, for all the right reasons. The Area is also packed with places to go. Word of warning if you walk over the cliffs to the town - remember there is no bus or taxis back and it's all uphill. LOL
We`ve been to Ladram bay before on a couple of occasions, but stayed in a static caravan.
Love the site, as the location is really nice, with the beach belonging to the site.
Lots of facilities and very well kept site.
So we booked our camping trip to go with the Jubilee holidays. Five days was the duration.
This was our first camping trip here, and went wrong when we were directed to Smugglers pitch 157.
We booked a large pitch with hookup and got probably the smallest spot on a slope with a small tree planted on the edge of the pitch.
We have a Montana 6 and front awning, but didn't have room to pitch the awning.
Every pitch that we could see was substantially larger than this, and the staff at the site actually agreed with us. They had a full site and couldn't move us, so offered us a partial refund and apology. Very frustrated as we`d spent nearly 6 hours getting there.
Anyway, tent up and all set up inside, we made for the upstairs bar for food and drinks. Food is really good in there and the carvery is recommended.
During the stay, we used the pool and our kids 3 and 4 loved it. The cafe and chippy are also great if you don't want to cook.
Showers are criticised for being too powerful, but they are clean all the time, but really need a fold away seat or some way to avoid having wet feet when getting dressed.
Weather turned out to be awful, with just one day nice ( a trip to Lyme Regis is a great idea) the rest raining and blowing a gale.
We decided to end our camp trip a day early and pack up, as the BBC had issued a severe weather warning.
We had a nice end to our trip as when we were putting the tent away, the BBC from Radio Devon came on site and did an interview with us!
Its on their website if you want to see the how horrible the weather was!
Anyway, we had a nice break, if a bit annoyed that the park didn't give us a large pitch, and we had to cut our stay short due to the unusually poor weather, but it says more when we would return, providing we called first to ensure our pitch was a suitable size!
It's nit picking to try and criticise the facilities as they are very good and very well looked after.
On arrival looked a nice site, helped to pitch, friendly staff. Facilities looked good. Seasonal pitches look quite messy, but fairly to one side of site.
Fantastic views, but electric and waste and water on wrong side of caravan so don't reach. We had come with two dogs to walk the walks described on website and brochure, but we had a great tragedy on the walk to budleigh salterton one of our dogs fell and died.
There are no warning notices, and you feel quite safe as not that near to the edge. Staff at a lose as what to do, didn't know who should be notify etc. Never received any condolences from management, or even a email after we left the site early.
We only went to Ladram because their sister camp, Castle Brake, was unfortunately too wet for us to get on to with our small camper van. The price for the van and two adults was reasonable enough for a site with undoubtedly top quality entertainment, cafe's and location, but as we always travel with our two, very well behaved dogs, we often have to pay extra. Fair enough, but the £5 per night, per dog was the most expensive we have ever had to pay (double, in fact).
There were no bins on the site for you to put your dogs waste in, and there were only the bins in a compound beside the main buildings to put your normal rubbish and recycling in, a 600 yard round trip from the top of the site where we were staying. The result of this is that people only make one trip a day to the bins and the seagulls, mice and slugs could break into the bags and spread the contents all over the site (not so much of the spreading was done by the slugs).
Our pitch was a fully serviced hard standing which was nice and level and large enough for our van and 4metre awning to fit snuggly on. The grass around our pitch could've done with cutting
The facilities were adequate, although there were no plugs in the sinks (you can buy one of course for a further £1.99p). The showers were very clean, but there was no where to put your clothes whilst you shower, so my advice would be, take as little with you into the cubicle as you can.
The food we had in the bar was OK, but not top notch and quite expensive.
The overall impression that I have been left with is that, as the site is being developed for luxury caravans, they are not really interested in touring vans (especially if you have dogs), and don't really want the bother. Don't worry, we won't be bothering them again!
Indeed it was very cramped, great fun though watching the other campers trying to manoeuvre their cars around the narrow roads on Smugglers. We knew it was going to be cramped though as the site phoned up the morning before saying they might not be able to accommodate us, charming as we had actually booked in January!
Our pitch though was fine but felt sorry for the other campers as one person wanted to get their car out and 4 other cars had to be moved to do it.
Packed up early due to the weather, but all in all a decent holiday and campsite
Just back from the bank holiday, stayed on the smugglers pitches, fantastic views, pitch I thought on the small side, I had a maritsa 700.
Agree with previous review, water pressure was more like a water cannon!, this must be addressed by the site, as the spray back soaked clothes, tip is to use the family room, perfect pressure plus toilet and sink!, apart from that can't fault site.
Excellent play area next to bar, good arcade and kids facilities, takeaway was very nice, on site shop sells everything.
large Tesco took ten minutes to drive to, you pass a lidi first and McDonalds, Sidmouth has banks, Tesco ect and the best seafood going.
just a short drive away with a lovely view point on route, would definitely return, one major gripe is the charge for the pool thou, I refused to pay as all other sites I have stayed at include this in price, that said a good family site, and thou steep it isn't as bad as made out, recommended
Just returned home from 4 days break over bank holiday weekend. We visited this site with our daughter, son in law and two grandchildren who had their own touring van.
Having read the reviews we did wonder how steep it was going to be especially as we were right at the top of the site, but it isn't half as bad as everybody is making out. Yes it's a reasonable distance but with views like that it was worth it. It's a steady climb but it's not what I would call steep. Everybody has different views, but don't let it put you off, it's not a problem at all.
The grandchildren enjoyed the entertainment, park, indoor play-centre and the swimming.
We had breakfast in the cafe one morning and also used the take away one night, both were very good and reasonably priced. Service was good, with staff cheerful as they were everywhere in the park.
Toilets and showers were spotless, and if we had one gripe it would be the water pressure in the showers. It was very strong and sprayed everywhere, but water was hot and constant so it wasn't all bad.
The shop was large, well stocked and again reasonably priced, it was lovely to have fresh rolls, croissants etc. There isn't much you wouldn't be able to buy in it.
It is a busy site with lots going on (not one we would visit without the grandchildren) but it was good value for money given the amount to do there.
We booked a little camping holiday to Ladram Bay using the Daily Mirror 95p per night camping tokens, paying £10 extra per night for electric hook up.
We thought it was great value as the site is beautiful, over looking the sea and rocks. I liked how the site is tiered so there's a great view from almost everywhere.
We didn't manage to visit the bar or restaurant, but I'm sure they're brilliant, in keeping with the rest of the park.
The well stocked on site shop was very useful, selling all sorts from gifts to camping gear and other essentials.
The shower facilities were good and the site in general was very clean and presentable, always someone pottering about mowing or tending to the area.
We will definitely be going back, although unfortunately they are not included in the Daily Mirror camping offer this year.
the campsite itself was nice but a few things spoilt it. it's a very steep walk from facilities to site were you camp.
Toilet blocks: the girls worked hard cleaning them. Sinks had no plugs we had a word 3 times but nothing was done about it.
The shop sold plugs but why should you have to pay £2 for one. Showers sprayed every were so every thing got wet. We got a family room key and it was just as bad in there had to stand mopping for 15 min before you could get dressed. Ended up having a bath instead.
The shop was very expensive. Electric during the day kept cutting out so as we found the supply wasn't strong enough
Well my family won't be going again.
I don't ask for a lot but to be able to put water in a sink and keep my stuff dry after a shower is not a lot.
We had a fantastic weeks stay here. The views from the ridges is breath taking, we stayed on pitch 140 at the very top of the ridges also we had our own running water and drainage, bring a long drainage pipe we had to buy 10 meters to reach the drain. The walk is very steep but its well worth it for the views.
The showers and toilets were clean.
It has everything to keep kids happy, like crazy golf for £1. 50, ice skating, swimming, play grounds galore and a sports field.
The beach is a pebble beach with boat / kayak hire. The sea is crystal clear and safe and we saw people rock jumping into the sea from around 40 foot.
The entertainment was good, The kids seem to enjoy it.
We eat a couple of nights at the pebble beach restaurant and the food was excellent.
The shop has everything you need and is reasonably priced.
Its that good here we have booked for next year and so did others we spoke to.
On arrival the staff where very friendly and helpful.
As the tourer pitches are terraced on the steep hill, they will take your unit to your pitch for you. (the chap on the tractor is a master at caravan moves).
The site has great views from the pitches which are a good size and have ehu and water.
The beach is pebbly so you need crocs etc to walk on it, when the tides out there are some great rock pools to investigate.
The on site shop is well stocked and reasonably priced, the fish & chip shop also done pizzas & kebabs and was also good value for money.
Only popped in the club briefly, seemed ok and very family orientated (wife enjoyed the bingo)
Other reviews mention the seagulls, as long as you don't leave rubbish outside then they are not a problem.
Kids play areas are good, and also a big field for football or kite flying.
My only negative is the showers on the 'pitches' side, they need a curtain to stop the water soaking the whole floor, as there is no dry area to get dressed.
Other than that a good site and I would return.
Also bicton park is worth a visit (3 miles away) and if you have children 'crealy' is a good day out (12 miles)
